Goldberg's constants

We study two extremal problems of geometric function theory introduced by A. A. Goldberg in 1973. For one problem we find the exact solution, and for the second one we obtain partial results. In the process we study the lengths of hyperbolic geodesics in the twice punctured plane, prove several results about them and make a conjecture. Goldberg's problems have important applications to control theory.

Some examples of Baker domains

We construct entire functions with hyperbolic and simply parabolic Baker domains on which the functions are not univalent. The Riemann maps from the unit disk to these Baker domains extend continuously to certain arcs on the unit circle. The results answer questions posed by Fagella and Henriksen, Baker and Dominguez, and others.

Multiply connected wandering domains of entire functions

The dynamical behaviour of a transcendental entire function in any periodic component of the Fatou set is well understood. Here we study the dynamical behaviour of a transcendental entire function $f$ in any multiply connected wandering domain $U$ of $f$. By introducing a certain positive harmonic function $h$ in $U$, related to harmonic measure, we are able to give the first detailed description of this dynamical behaviour. Using this new technique, we show that, for sufficiently large $n$, the image domains $U_n=f^n(U)$ contain large annuli, $C_n$, and that the union of these annuli acts as an absorbing set for the iterates of $f$ in $U$. Moreover, $f$ behaves like a monomial within each of these annuli and the orbits of points in $U$ settle in the long term at particular `levels' within the annuli, determined by the function $h$. We also discuss the proximity of $\partial U_n$ and $\partial C_n$ for large $n$, and the connectivity properties of the components of $U_n \setminus \bar{C_n}$. These properties are deduced from new results about the behaviour of an entire function which omits certain values in an annulus.

Fatou-Julia theory for non-uniformly quasiregular maps

Many results of the Fatou-Julia iteration theory of rational functions extend to uniformly quasiregular maps in higher dimensions. We obtain results of this type for certain classes of quasiregular maps which are not uniformly quasiregular.

On the packing dimension of the Julia set and the escaping set of an entire function

We show that for large classes of entire functions the Julia set and the escaping set have packing dimension two. For example, this is the case for entire functions which are bounded on a curve tending to infinity. More generally, we show that the result holds under suitable growth conditions involving the minimum and maximum modulus.

On the uniform perfectness of the boundary of multiply connected wandering domains

We investigate in which cases the boundary of a multiply connected wandering domain of an entire function is uniformly perfect. We give a general criterion implying that it is not uniformly perfect. This criterion applies in particular to examples of multiply connected wandering domains given by Baker. We also provide examples of infinitely connected wandering domains whose boundary is uniformly perfect.

Dynamics of a higher dimensional analog of the trigonometric functions

We introduce a higher dimensional quasiregular map analogous to the trigonometric functions and we use the dynamics of this map to define, for d>1, a partition of d-dimensional Euclidean space into curves tending to infinity such that two curves may intersect only in their endpoints and such that the union of the curves without their endpoints has Hausdorff dimension one.

Normal families and fixed points of iterates

Let F be a family of holomorphic functions and let K be a constant less than 4. Suppose that for all f in F the second iterate of f does not have fixed points for which the modulus of the multiplier is greater than K. We show that then F is normal. This is deduced from a result about the multipliers of iterated polynomials.

Entire functions with Julia sets of positive measure

Let f be a transcendental entire function for which the set of critical and asymptotic values is bounded. The Denjoy-Carleman-Ahlfors theorem implies that if the set of all z for which |f(z)|>R has N components for some R>0, then the order of f is at least N/2. More precisely, we have log log M(r,f) > (N/2) log r - O(1), where M(r,f) denotes the maximum modulus of f. We show that if f does not grow much faster than this, then the escaping set and the Julia set of f have positive Lebesgue measure. However, as soon as the order of f exceeds N/2, this need not be true. The proof requires a sharpened form of an estimate of Tsuji related to the Denjoy-Carleman-Ahlfors theorem.

Karpińska's paradox in dimension three

For 0 < c < 1/e the Julia set of f(z) = c exp(z) is an uncountable union of pairwise disjoint simple curves tending to infinity [Devaney and Krych 1984], the Hausdorff dimension of this set is two [McMullen 1987], but the set of curves without endpoints has Hausdorff dimension one [Karpinska 1999]. We show that these results have three-dimensional analogues when the exponential function is replaced by a quasiregular self-map of three-space introduced by Zorich.

On the Hausdorff dimension of the escaping set of certain meromorphic functions

The escaping set I(f) of a transcendental meromorphic function f consists of all points which tend to infinity under iteration. The Eremenko-Lyubich class B consists of all transcendental meromorphic functions for which the set of finite critical and asymptotic values of f is bounded. It is shown that if f is in B and of finite order of growth, if infinity is not an asymptotic value of f and if the multiplicities of the poles of f are uniformly bounded, then the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) is strictly smaller than 2. In fact, we give a sharp bound for the Hausdorff dimension of I(f) in terms of the order of f and the bound for the multiplicities of the poles. If f satisfies the above hypotheses but is of infinite order, then the area of I(f) is zero. This result does not hold without a restriction on the multiplicities of the poles.

The size of Wiman-Valiron disks

Wiman-Valiron theory and results of Macintyre about "flat regions" describe the asymptotic behavior of entire functions in certain disks around points of maximum modulus. We estimate the size of these disks for Macintyre's theory from above and below.

The growth rate of an entire function and the Hausdorff dimension of its Julia set

Let f be a transcendental entire function in the Eremenko-Lyubich class B. We give a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set of f that depends on the growth of f. This estimate is best possible and is obtained by proving a more general result concerning the size of the escaping set of a function with a logarithmic tract.
