One-loop corrections to the spectral action

We analyze the perturbative quantization of the spectral action in noncommutative geometry and establish its one-loop renormalizability in a generalized sense, while staying within the spectral framework of noncommutative geometry. Our result is based on the perturbative expansion of the spectral action in terms of higher Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons forms. In the spirit of random noncommutative geometries, we consider the path integral over matrix fluctuations around a fixed noncommutative gauge background and show that the corresponding one-loop counterterms are of the same form so that they can be safely subtracted from the spectral action. A crucial role will be played by the appropriate Ward identities, allowing for a fully spectral formulation of the quantum theory at one loop.

Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of state spaces for spectral truncations

We study the convergence aspects of the metric on spectral truncations of geometry. We find general conditions on sequences of operator system spectral triples that allows one to prove a result on Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of the corresponding state spaces when equipped with Connes' distance formula. We exemplify this result for spectral truncations of the circle, Fourier series on the circle with a finite number of Fourier modes, and matrix algebras that converge to the sphere.

Second Quantization and the Spectral Action

We consider both the bosonic and fermionic second quantization of spectral triples in the presence of a chemical potential. We show that the von Neumann entropy and the average energy of the Gibbs state defined by the bosonic and fermionic grand partition function can be expressed as spectral actions. It turns out that all spectral action coefficients can be given in terms of the modified Bessel functions. In the fermionic case, we show that the spectral coefficients for the von Neumann entropy, in the limit when the chemical potential $μ$ approaches $0,$ can be expressed in terms of the Riemann zeta function. This recovers a result of Chamseddine-Connes-van Suijlekom.

Schatten classes for Hilbert modules over commutative C*-algebras

We define Schatten classes of adjointable operators on Hilbert modules over abelian $C^*$-algebras. Many key features carry over from the Hilbert space case. In particular, the Schatten classes form two-sided ideals of compact operators and are equipped with a Banach norm and a $C^*$-valued trace with the expected properties. For trivial Hilbert bundles, we show that our Schatten-class operators can be identified bijectively with Schatten-norm-continuous maps from the base space into the Schatten classes on the Hilbert space fiber, with the fiberwise trace. As applications, we introduce the $C^*$-valued Fredholm determinant and operator zeta functions, and propose a notion of $p$-summable unbounded Kasparov cycles in the commutative setting.

Spectral action in matrix form

Quantization of the noncommutative geometric spectral action has so far been performed on the final component form of the action where all traces over the Dirac matrices and symmetry algebra are carried out. In this work, in order to preserve the noncommutative geometric structure of the formalism, we derive the quantization rules for propagators and vertices in matrix form. We show that the results in the case of a product of a four-dimensional Euclidean manifold by a finite space, could be cast in the form of that of a Yang-Mills theory. We illustrate the procedure for the toy electroweak model.

Spectral truncations in noncommutative geometry and operator systems

In this paper we extend the traditional framework of noncommutative geometry in order to deal with spectral truncations of geometric spaces (i.e. imposing an ultraviolet cutoff in momentum space) and with tolerance relations which provide a coarse grain approximation of geometric spaces at a finite resolution. In our new approach the traditional role played by $C^*$-algebras is taken over by operator systems. As part of the techniques we treat $C^*$-envelopes, dual operator systems and stable equivalence. We define a propagation number for operator systems, which we show to be an invariant under stable equivalence and use to compare approximations of the same space. We illustrate our methods for concrete examples obtained by spectral truncations of the circle. These are operator systems of finite-dimensional Toeplitz matrices and their dual operator systems which are given by functions in the group algebra on the integers with support in a fixed interval. It turns out that the cones of positive elements and the pure state spaces for these operator systems possess a very rich structure which we analyze including for the algebraic geometry of the boundary of the positive cone and the metric aspect i.e. the distance on the state space associated to the Dirac operator. The main property of the spectral truncation is that it keeps the isometry group intact. In contrast, if one considers the other finite approximation provided by circulant matrices the isometry group becomes discrete, even though in this case the operator system is a $C^*$-algebra. We analyze this in the context of the finite Fourier transform. The extension of noncommutative geometry to operator systems allows one to deal with metric spaces up to finite resolution by considering the relation $d(x,y)<ε$ between two points, or more generally a tolerance relation which naturally gives rise to an operator system.

Immersions and the unbounded Kasparov product: embedding spheres into Euclidean space

We construct an unbounded representative for the shriek class associated to the embeddings of spheres into Euclidean space. We equip this unbounded Kasparov cycle with a connection and compute the unbounded Kasparov product with the Dirac operator on $\mathbb R^{n+1}$. We find that the resulting spectral triple for the algebra $C(\mathbb S^n)$ differs from the Dirac operator on the round sphere by a so-called index cycle, whose class in $KK_0(\mathbb C, \mathbb C)$ represents the multiplicative unit. At all points we check that our construction involving the unbounded Kasparov product is compatible with the bounded Kasparov product using Kucerovsky's criterion and we thus capture the composition law for the shriek map for these immersions at the unbounded KK-theoretical level.

Curvature of differentiable Hilbert modules and Kasparov modules

In this paper we introduce the curvature of densely defined universal connections on Hilbert $C^{*}$-modules relative to a spectral triple (or unbounded Kasparov module), obtaining a well-defined curvature operator. Fixing the spectral triple, we find that modulo junk forms, the curvature only depends on the represented form of the universal connection. We refine our definition of curvature to factorisations of unbounded Kasparov modules. Our refined definition recovers all the curvature data of a Riemannian submersion of compact manifolds, viewed as a $KK$-factorisation.

The fundamental group of a noncommutative space

We introduce and analyse a general notion of fundamental group for noncommutative spaces, described by differential graded algebras. For this we consider connections on finitely generated projective bimodules over differential graded algebras and show that the category of flat connections on such modules forms a Tannakian category. As such this category can be realised as the category of representations of an affine group scheme $G$, which in the classical case is (the pro-algebraic completion of) the usual fundamental group. This motivates us to define $G$ to be the fundamental group of the noncommutative space under consideration. The needed assumptions on the differential graded algebra are rather mild and completely natural in the context of noncommutative differential geometry. We establish the appropriate functorial properties, homotopy and Morita invariance of this fundamental group. As an example we find that the fundamental group of the noncommutative torus can be described as the algebraic hull of the topological group $(\mathbb Z+θ\mathbb Z)^2$.

A survey of spectral models of gravity coupled to matter

This is a survey of the historical development of the Spectral Standard Model and beyond, starting with the ground breaking paper of Alain Connes in 1988 where he observed that there is a link between Higgs fields and finite noncommutative spaces. We present the important contributions that helped in the search and identification of the noncommutative space that characterizes the fine structure of space-time. The nature and properties of the noncommutative space are arrived at by independent routes and show the uniqueness of the Spectral Standard Model at low energies and the Pati-Salam unification model at high energies.

Entropy and the spectral action

We compute the information theoretic von Neumann entropy of the state associated to the fermionic second quantization of a spectral triple. We show that this entropy is given by the spectral action of the spectral triple for a specific universal function. The main result of our paper is the surprising relation between this function and the Riemann zeta function. It manifests itself in particular by the values of the coefficients $c(d)$ by which it multiplies the $d$ dimensional terms in the heat expansion of the spectral triple. We find that $c(d)$ is the product of the Riemann xi function evaluated at $-d$ by an elementary expression. In particular $c(4)$ is a rational multiple of $ζ(5)$ and $c(2)$ a rational multiple of $ζ(3)$. The functional equation gives a duality between the coefficients in positive dimension, which govern the high energy expansion, and the coefficients in negative dimension, exchanging even dimension with odd dimension.

Factorization of Dirac operators on toric noncommutative manifolds

We factorize the Dirac operator on the Connes-Landi 4-sphere in unbounded KK-theory. We show that a family of Dirac operators along the orbits of the torus action defines an unbounded Kasparov module, while the Dirac operator on the principal orbit space -an open quadrant in the 2-sphere- defines a half-closed chain. We show that the tensor sum of these two operators coincides up to unitary equivalence with the Dirac operator on the Connes-Landi sphere and prove that this tensor sum is an unbounded representative of the interior Kasparov product in bivariant K-theory. We also generalize our results to Dirac operators on all toric noncommutative manifolds subject to a condition on the principal stratum. We find that there is a curvature term that arises as an obstruction for having a tensor sum decomposition in unbounded KK-theory. This curvature term can however not be detected at the level of bounded KK-theory.

Reflection positivity in higher derivative scalar theories

Reflection positivity constitutes an integral prerequisite in the Osterwalder-Schrader reconstruction theorem which relates quantum field theories defined on Euclidean space to their Lorentzian signature counterparts. In this work we rigorously prove the violation of reflection positivity in a large class of free scalar fields with a rational propagator. This covers in particular higher-derivative theories where the propagator admits a partial fraction decomposition as well as degenerate cases including e.g. p^4 -type propagators.

Factorization of Dirac operators on almost-regular fibrations of spin$^c$ manifolds

We establish the factorization of the Dirac operator on an almost-regular fibration of spin$^c$ manifolds in unbounded KK-theory. As a first intermediate result we establish that any vertically elliptic and symmetric first-order differential operator on a proper submersion defines an unbounded Kasparov module, and thus represents a class in KK-theory. Then, we generalize our previous results on factorizations of Dirac operators to proper Riemannian submersions of spin$^c$ manifolds. This allows us to show that the Dirac operator on the total space of an almost-regular fibration can be written as the tensor sum of a vertically elliptic family of Dirac operators with the horizontal Dirac operator, up to an explicit `obstructing' curvature term. We conclude by showing that the tensor sum factorization represents the interior Kasparov product in bivariant K-theory.

On a theorem of Kucerovsky for half-closed chains

Kucerovsky's theorem provides a method for recognizing the interior Kasparov product of selfadjoint unbounded cycles. In this paper we extend Kucerovsky's theorem to the non-selfadjoint setting by replacing unbounded Kasparov modules with Hilsum's half-closed chains. On our way we show that any half-closed chain gives rise to a multitude of twisted selfadjoint unbounded cycles via a localization procedure. These unbounded modular cycles allow us to provide verifiable criteria avoiding any reference to domains of adjoints of symmetric unbounded operators.

Reduction of quantum systems and the local Gauss law

We give an operator-algebraic interpretation of the notion of an ideal generated by the unbounded operators associated to the elements of the Lie algebra of a Lie group that implements the symmetries of a quantum system. We use this interpretation to establish a link between Rieffel induction and the implementation of a local Gauss law in lattice gauge theories similar to the method discussed by Kijowski and Rudolph in [5, 6].

Quantum lattice gauge fields and groupoid C*-algebras

We present an operator-algebraic approach to the quantization and reduction of lattice field theories. Our approach uses groupoid C*-algebras to describe the observables and exploits Rieffel induction to implement the quantum gauge symmetries. We introduce direct systems of Hilbert spaces and direct systems of (observable) C*-algebras, and, dually, corresponding inverse systems of configuration spaces and (pair) groupoids. The continuum and thermodynamic limit of the theory can then be described by taking the corresponding limits, thereby keeping the duality between the Hilbert space and observable C*-algebra on the one hand, and the configuration space and the pair groupoid on the other. Since all constructions are equivariant with respect to the gauge group, the reduction procedure applies in the limit as well.

Riemannian submersions and factorization of Dirac operators

We establish the factorization of Dirac operators on Riemannian submersions of compact spin$^c$ manifolds in unbounded KK-theory. More precisely, we show that the Dirac operator on the total space of such a submersion is unitarily equivalent to the tensor sum of a family of Dirac operators with the Dirac operator on the base space, up to an explicit bounded curvature term. Thus, the latter is an obstruction to having a factorization in unbounded KK-theory. We show that our tensor sum represents the bounded KK-product of the corresponding KK-cycles and connect to the early work of Connes and Skandalis.
