On Tomonaga's Theory of Split-Anode Magnetrons

This article is meant to formulate the equations of motion of an electron in a cavity magnetron using action-angle variables. This means following the electron's path on its way from a cylindrical cathode moving toward a co-axial cylindrical anode in presence of a uniform magnetic field parallel to the common axis. After analyzing the situation without coupling to an external oscillatory electric field, we employ methods of canonical perturbation theory to find the resonance condition between the frequencies of the free theory w_r, w_phi and the applied perturbing oscillatory frequency w. A long-time averaging process will then eliminate the periodic terms in the equation for the now time-dependent action-angle variables. The terms that are no longer periodic will cause secular changes so that the canonical action-angle variables (J, delta) change in a way that the path of the electron will deform gradually so that it can reach the anode. How the ensemble of the initially randomly distributed electrons forms spokes and how their energy is conveyed to the cavity-field oscillation is the main focus of this article. Some remarks concerning the importance of results in QED and the invention of radar theory and application conclude the article.

Some remarks on the use of effective Lagrangians in QED and QCD

We discuss in this article the usefulness of the effective Lagrangians (L_eff) of QED and QCD within the one-loop approximation. Instead of calculating L_eff via complicated computations with Schwinger's proper-time technique or Feynman graphs, we prefer to employ the energy-momentum tensor and the leading-log model. The advantage is that we do not have to demand the external electromagnetic or color field to be constant. There are also some critical remarks added which cast doubt on the use of LQCD with covariant constant fields in explaining the nature of the QCD vacuum.

The Cofounder of Quantum Field Theory: Pascual Jordan

A comparative study is undertaken that brings to light the two different methods of how to treat the many-body problem in quantum field theory. The two main researchers who published the first versions of how to quantize a many-body assembly were P. Jordan and P.A.M. Dirac. What they understood by the so-called "second quantization" will be the subject of the paper. We will argue that it is Jordan's field operator approach that until now constitutes the basis of any work in quantum field theory.

On The Pauli-Weisskopf Anti-Dirac Paper

We review in this article the role which the work of Pauli and Weisskopf played in formulating a quantum field theory of spinless particles. To make our computations as transparent as possible, we offer a physicist's derivation of the Klein-Gordon-Fock equation. Since invariant functions play a significant part in our paper, we will discuss them in great detail. We emphasize Pauli's and Weisskopf's view that Dirac's hole theory is totally obsolete in formulating a consistent quantum field theory, be it for scalar or spinor particles. As an important example we present the calculation for producing charged scalar particles in an external electric field.

On Schwinger's formula for pair production

We present some comments on Schwinger's calculation of electron-positron production in a prescribed constant electric field. The range of validity of 2 Im \mathcal{L}^(1)(E) is discussed thoroughly and limiting cases are provided.

Bloch-Nordsieck Approximation in Linearized Quantum Gravity

The aim of this article is to review Fradkin's contribution in the realm of eikonal physics. In particular, the so-called Fradkin representation is employed to investigate a certain subclass of Feynman diagrams resulting in an expression for the scattering amplitude at Planckian energies. The 't Hooft poles are reproduced.

Second-Order Radiative Corrections to the Axial Vector Anomaly

We re-examine the historically important decay of the neutral pion into two photons. Schwinger's Equivalence Theorem is confirmed. We then consider radiative corrections to the famous Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly. The result depends crucially on a physically motivated regularization scheme. Our approach is largely based on Schwinger's source (dispersion) method.

Vacuum Polarization Using Quantum Mechanical Path Integrals

We compute the quantum vacuum polarization for a pure neutral scalar field theory within the context of single-particle quantum mechanics. The loop diagram is computed without ever encountering loop-momentum integrals. Our approach is based on standard Feynman path integrals. Contact is made to scalar QED.

Applications of the Light Cone Condition for various perturbed Vacua

We examine the propagation of light in the presence of various modifications of the QED vacuum in the limit of low frequency. A polarization summed and direction averaged-light cone condition is derived from the equation of motion which arises from the effective QED action. Several applications are given concerning vacuum modifications caused by, e.g., strong fields, Casimir systems and finite temperature.

The Coulomb Green's Function in Two Dimensions

We consider the two-dimensional non-relativistic Coulomb problem with the aid of the momentum space construction of the associated Green's function. Our presentation has precursors in three dimensions. It is mainly Schwinger's approach which we advocate and project onto two dimensions.

Light propagation in non-trivial QED vacua

Within the framework of effective action QED, we derive the light cone condition for homogeneous non-trivial QED vacua in the geometric optics approximation. Our result generalizes the ``unified formula'' suggested by Latorre, Pascual and Tarrach and allows for the calculation of velocity shifts and refractive indices for soft photons travelling through these vacua. Furthermore, we clarify the connection between the light velocity shift and the scale anomaly. This study motivates the introduction of a so-called effective action charge that characterizes the velocity modifying properties of the vacuum. Several applications are given concerning vacuum modifications caused by, e.g., strong fields, Casimir systems and high temperature.

Light Propagation in Non-Trivial QED Vacua

Within the geometric optics approximation, we derive the light cone condition for a class of homogeneous non-trivial QED vacua using the effective action approach. Our result generalizes the ``unified formula'' suggested by Latorre, Pascual and Tarrach which turns out to be a low-energy limit. We calculate the velocity shifts induced by electromagnetic fields and finite temperature and especially analyze the high-energy limit consistent with the loop approximation.

Flavor Condensate and Vacuum (In-)Stability in QED_(2+1)

In this letter we study (2+1)-dimensional QED. The first part contains the computation of the flavor symmetry-breaking condensate and its relation to the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, while the second part is concerned with the computation of the effective action allowing for non-constant static external magnetic fields. We do not find that space derivatives in the magnetic field lower the energy of the ground state as compared to a constant field configuration.

Analytical results for the confinement mechanism in QCD_3

We present analytical methods for investigating the interaction of two heavy quarks in QCD_3 using the effective action approach. Our findings result in explicit expressions for the static potentials in QCD_3 for long and short distances. With regard to confinement, our conclusion reflects many features found in the more realistic world of QCD_4.
