Progress in the mathematical theory of quantum disordered systems

We review recent progress in the mathematical theory of quantum disordered systems: the Anderson transition, including some joint work with Domingos Marchetti, the (quantum and classical) Edwards-Anderson (EA) spin-glass model and return to equilibrium for a class of spin-glass models, which includes the EA model initially in a very large transverse field.

Anderson-like Transition for a Class of Random Sparse Models in d >= 2 Dimensions

We show that the Kronecker sum of d >= 2 copies of a random one-dimensional sparse model displays a spectral transition of the type predicted by Anderson, from absolutely continuous around the center of the band to pure point around the boundaries. Possible applications to physics and open problems are discussed briefly.

Dark Energy: Casimir Effect, Generalized Homogeneity and Axions

This paper has been withdrawn because a much better version, G. Gazzola, M. C. Nemes and W. F. Wreszinski - On the Casimir Energy for a massive quantum scalar field and the cosmological constant- Annals of Physics (N.Y.) vol. 324, 2095-2107 (2009) has appeared, which corrects several conceptual errors in the present one.

A Goldstone Theorem in Thermal Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

We prove a Goldstone Theorem in thermal relativistic quantum field theory, which relates spontaneous symmetry breaking to the rate of space-like decay of the two-point function. The critical rate of fall-off coincides with that of the massless free scalar field theory. Related results and open problems are briefly discussed.

On the mixing property for a class of states of relativistic quantum fields

Let $ω$ be a factor state on the quasi-local algebra $\cal{A}$ of observables generated by a relativistic quantum field, which in addition satisfies certain regularity conditions (satisfied by ground states and the recently constructed thermal states of the $P(ϕ)_2$ theory). We prove that there exist space and time translation invariant states, some of which are arbitrarily close to $ω$ in the weak* topology, for which the time evolution is weakly asymptotically abelian.

Approach to equilibrium for a class of random quantum models of infinite range

We consider random generalizations of a quantum model of infinite range introduced by Emch and Radin. The generalization allows a neat extension from the class $l_1$ of absolutely summable lattice potentials to the optimal class $l_2$ of square summable potentials first considered by Khanin and Sinai and generalised by van Enter and van Hemmen. The approach to equilibrium in the case of a Gaussian distribution is proved to be faster than for a Bernoulli distribution for both short-range and long-range lattice potentials. While exponential decay to equilibrium is excluded in the nonrandom $l_1$ case, it is proved to occur for both short and long range potentials for Gaussian distributions, and for potentials of class $l_2$ in the Bernoulli case. Open problems are discussed.

On the Mathematical Theory of Superfluidity

We provide a general operator algebraic formulation of superfluidity in Bose systems, with the aim of investigating the relationships of this phenomenon both to off-diagonal long range order (ODLRO) and to a mathematically precise version of Landau's picture of elementary excitations. Our principal results are that ODLRO leads both to rotational superfluidity and to Goldstone excitations, while the neo-Landau picture accounts for the translational superfluidity of flow along a pipe. The latter picture is realised by the Lieb-Liniger-Girardeau model. Open problems are briefly discussed.

A precise formulation of the third law of thermodynamics

The third law of thermodynamics is formulated precisely: all points of the state space of zero temperature $Γ_0$ are physically adiabatically inaccessible from the state space of a simple system. In addition to implying the unattainability of absolute zero in finite time (or "by a finite number of operations"), it admits as corollary, under a continuity assumption, that all points of $Γ_0$ are adiabatically equivalent. We argue that the third law is universally valid for all macroscopic systems which obey the laws of quantum mechanics and/or quantum field theory. We also briefly discuss why a precise formulation of the third law for black holes remains an open problem.

On Translational Superfluidity and the Landau Criterion for Trapped Bose gases in the Gross-Pitaevski Limit

The two-fluid and Landau criteria for superfluidity are compared for trapped Bose gases. While the two-fluid criterion predicts translational superfluidity, it is suggested, on the basis of the homogeneous Gross-Pitaevski limit, that a necessary part of Landau's criterion, adequate for non-translationally invariant systems, d oes not hold for trapped Bose gases in the GP limit. As a consequence, if the compressibility is detected to be very large (infinite by experimental standards) the two-fluid criterion is seen to be the relevant one in case the system is a tranlational superfluid, while the Landau criterion is the relevant one if translational superfluidity is absent.

Two-level quantum dynamics, integrability and unitary NOT gates

We study the dynamics of a two-level quantum system interacting with an external electromagnetic field periodic and quasiperiodic in time. The quantum evolution is described exactly by the classical equations of motion of a gyromagnet in a time-dependent magnetic field. We prove that this classical system is integrable as a consequence of the underlying unitary quantum dynamics. As a consequence, for the periodic case: i) rigorous assessment of the validity of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) becomes possible even beyond the assumptions of resonance and weak coupling (the latter conditions are also shown to follow from the method of averaging); ii) we determine conditions for the realization of the quantum NOT operation beyond the RWA, by means of classical stroboscopic maps. The results bear upon areas as diverse as quantum optics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and quantum computation.

Quantum NOT Operation and Integrability in Two-Level Systems

We demonstrate the surprising integrability of the classical Hamiltonian associated to a spin 1/2 system under periodic external fields. The one-qubit rotations generated by the dynamical evolution is, on the one hand, close to that of the rotating wave approximation (RWA), on the other hand to two different ``average'' systems, according to whether a certain parameter is small or large. Of particular independent interest is the fact that both the RWA and the averaging theorem are seen to hold well beyond their expected region of validity. Finally we determine conditions for the realization of the quantum NOT operation by means of classical stroboscopic maps.

A Theory of the Casimir Effect for Compact Regions

We develop a mathematically precise framework for the Casimir effect. Our working hypothesis, verified in the case of parallel plates, is that only the regularization-independent Ramanujan sum of a given asymptotic series contributes to the Casimir pressure. As an illustration, we treat two cases: parallel plates, identifying a previous cutoff free version (by G. Scharf and W. W.) as a special case, and the sphere. We finally discuss the open problem of the Casimir force for the cube. We propose an Ansatz for the exterior force and argue why it may provide the exact solution, as well as an explanation of the repulsive sign of the force.
