A tropical formula for non-Archimedean local heights

We introduce delta-forms on tropical toric varieties generalizing the construction of Mihatsch for $R^n$. These delta-forms will be used to define the star-product with Green functions of piecewise smooth type on a tropical toric variety. As an application, we show that non-archimedean local heights of projective varieties can be computed using the star-product on a suitable complete tropical toric variety. On the way, we show that open subsets of a simplicial tropical toric variety have a locally finite simplicial decomposition which is constant towards the boundary.

Classically psh and pluriharmonic functions on Berkovich spaces

First we extend the theory of subharmonic functions on smooth strictly $k$-analytic curves from Thuillier's thesis to the case of possibly singular analytic curves over a non-archimedean field. Classically psh functions are then defined as in complex geometry by using pullbacks to analytic curves (and requiring compatibility with base change). We give various properties of classically psh functions including a local and a global maximum principle. As a consequence, we show that the space of pluriharmonic functions on a quasi-compact Berkovich space is finite dimensional. As a technical tool, we use that a connected Berkovich space is connected by analytic curves.

On semipositive piecewise linear functions in non-archimedean analytic geometry

In this paper, we generalize results on Zhang's semipositive model metrics from the algebraic setting to strictly analytic spaces over a non-trivially valued non-Archimedean field. We prove stability under pointwise limits and under forming the maximum. We also prove the maximum principle. As tools, we use a local lifting theorem from the special fiber to the generic fiber of a model and an affinoid Bieri--Groves theorem.

Abstract divisorial spaces and arithmetic intersection numbers

Yuan and Zhang introduced arithmetic intersection numbers for adelic line bundles on quasi-projective varieties over a number field. Burgos and Kramer generalized this approach allowing more singular metrics at archimedean places. We introduce abstract divisorial spaces as a tool to generalize these arithmetic intersection numbers to the setting of a proper adelic base curve in the sense of Chen and Moriwaki. We also allow more singular metrics at non-archimedean places using relative mixed energy there as well.

Monge-Ampère measures for toric metrics on abelian varieties

Toric metrics on a line bundle of an abelian variety $A$ are the invariant metrics under the natural torus action coming from Raynaud's uniformization theory. We compute here the associated Monge-Ampère measures for the restriction to any closed subvariety of $A$. This generalizes the computation of canonical measures done by the first author from canonical metrics to toric metrics and from discrete valuations to arbitrary non-archimedean fields.

On the non-archimedean Monge-Amp\`ere equation in mixed characteristic

Let X be a smooth projective variety over a complete discretely valued field of mixed characteristic. We solve non-archimedean Monge-Amp\`ere equations on X assuming resolution and embedded resolution of singularities. We follow the variational approach of Boucksom, Favre, and Jonsson proving the continuity of the plurisubharmonic envelope of a continuous metric on an ample line bundle on X. We replace the use of multiplier ideals in equicharacteristic zero by the use of perturbation friendly test ideals introduced by Bhatt, Ma, Patakfalvi, Schwede, Tucker, Waldron, and Witaszek building upon previous constructions by Hacon, Lamarche, and Schwede.

Forms on Berkovich spaces based on harmonic tropicalizations

We introduce tropical skeletons for Berkovich spaces based on results of Ducros. Then we study harmonic functions on good strictly analytic spaces over a non-trivially valued non-Archimedean field. Chambert-Loir and Ducros introduced bigraded sheaves of smooth real-valued differential forms on Berkovich spaces by pulling back Lagerberg forms with respect to tropicalization maps. We give a new approach in which we allow pullback by more general harmonic tropicalizations to get a larger sheaf of differential forms with essentially the same properties, but with a better cohomological behavior. A crucial ingredient is that tropical varieties arising from harmonic tropicalization maps are balanced.

Dolbeault Cohomology of Graphs and Berkovich Curves

We introduce real-valued $(p,q)$-forms on weighted metric graphs with boundary similar to Lagerberg forms on polyhedral spaces. We compute the Dolbeault cohomology and prove Poincaré duality. Using Thuillier's thesis, the skeleton of a strictly semistable formal curve is canonically a weighted metric graph with boundary. We use that and our companion paper on weakly smooth forms to compute the Dolbeault cohomology for weakly smooth forms on any non-Archimedean compact rig-smooth analytic curve $X$, and prove Poincaré duality when $X$ is proper.

Pluripotential theory for tropical toric varieties and non-archimedean Monge-Ampére equations

Tropical toric varieties are partial compactifications of finite dimensional real vector spaces associated with rational polyhedral fans. We introduce plurisubharmonic functions and a Bedford--Taylor product for Lagerberg currents on open subsets of a tropical toric variety. The resulting tropical toric pluripotential theory provides the link to give a canonical correspondence between complex and non-archimedean pluripotential theories of invariant plurisubharmonic functions on toric varieties. We will apply this correspondence to solve invariant non-archimedean Monge--Ampère equations on toric and abelian varieties over arbitrary non-archimedean fields.

Non-Archimedean volumes of metrized nef line bundles

Let $L$ be a line bundle on a proper, geometrically reduced scheme $X$ over a non-trivially valued non-Archimedean field $K$. Roughly speaking, the non-Archimedean volume of a continuous metric on the Berkovich analytification of $L$ measures the asymptotic growth of the space of small sections of tensor powers of $L$. For a continuous semipositive metric on $L$ in the sense of Zhang, we show first that the non-Archimedean volume agrees with the energy. The existence of such a semipositive metric yields that $L$ is nef. A second result is that the non-Archimedean volume is differentiable at any semipositive continuous metric. These results are known when $L$ is ample, and the purpose of this paper is to generalize them to the nef case. The method is based on a detailed study of the content and the volume of a finitely presented torsion module over the (possibly non-noetherian) valuation ring of $K$.

Differentiability of relative volumes over an arbitrary non-Archimedean field

Given an ample line bundle $L$ on a geometrically reduced projective scheme defined over an arbitrary non-Archimedean field, we establish a differentiability property for the relative volume of two continuous metrics on the Berkovich analytification of $L$, extending previously known results in the discretely valued case. As applications, we provide fundamental solutions to certain non-Archimedean Monge--Ampère equations, and generalize an equidistribution result for Fekete points. Our main technical input comes from determinant of cohomology and Deligne pairings.

On Zhang's semipositive metrics

Zhang introduced semipositive metrics on a line bundle of a proper variety. In this paper, we generalize such metrics for a line bundle $L$ of a paracompact strictly $K$-analytic space $X$ over any non-archimedean field $K$. We prove various properties in this setting such as density of piecewise $\mathbb{Q}$-linear metrics in the space of continuous metrics on $L$. If $X$ is proper scheme, then we show that algebraic, formal and piecewise linear metrics are the same. Our main result is that on a proper scheme $X$ over an arbitrary non-archimedean field $K$, the set of semipositive model metrics is closed with respect to pointwise convergence generalizing a result from Boucksom, Favre and Jonsson where $K$ was assumed to be discretely valued with residue characteristic $0$.

Differentiability of non-archimedean volumes and non-archimedean Monge-Ampère equations (with an appendix by Robert Lazarsfeld)

Let $X$ be a normal projective variety over a complete discretely valued field and $L$ a line bundle on $X$. We denote by $X^\textrm{an}$ the analytification of $X$ in the sense of Berkovich and equip the analytification $L^\textrm{an}$ of $L$ with a continuous metric $\| \ \|$. We study non-archimedean volumes, a tool which allows us to control the asymptotic growth of small sections of big powers of $L$. We prove that the non-archimedean volume is differentiable at a continuous semipositive metric and that the derivative is given by integration with respect to a Monge-Ampère measure. Such a differentiability formula had been proposed by M. Kontsevich and Y. Tschinkel. In residue characteristic zero, it implies an orthogonality property for non-archimedean plurisubharmonic functions which allows us to drop an algebraicity assumption in a theorem of S. Boucksom, C. Favre and M. Jonsson about the solution to the non-archimedean Monge-Ampère equation. The appendix by R. Lazarsfeld establishes the holomorphic Morse inequalities in arbitrary characteristic.

Continuity of Plurisubharmonic Envelopes in Non-Archimedean Geometry and Test Ideals (with an Appendix by José Ignacio Burgos Gil and Martín Sombra)

Let L be an ample line bundle on a smooth projective variety X over a non-archimedean field K. For a continuous metric on L, we show in the following two cases that the semipositive envelope is a continuous semipositive metric on L and that the non-archimedean Monge-Ampère equation has a solution. First, we prove it for curves using results of Thuillier. Second, we show it under the assumption that X is a surface defined geometrically over the function field of a curve over a perfect field k of positive characteristic. The second case holds in higher dimensions if we assume resolution of singularities over k. The proof follows a strategy from Boucksom, Favre and Jonsson, replacing multiplier ideals by test ideals. Finally, the appendix by Burgos and Sombra provides an example of a semipositive metric whose retraction is not semipositive. The example is based on the construction of a toric variety which has two SNC-models which induce the same skeleton but different retraction maps.

Local heights of toric varieties over non-archimedean fields

We generalize results about local heights previously proved in the case of discrete absolute values to arbitrary non-archimedean absolute values of rank 1. First, this is done for the induction formula of Chambert-Loir and Thuillier. Then we prove the formula of Burgos--Philippon--Sombra for the toric local height of a proper normal toric variety in this more general setting. We apply the corresponding formula for Moriwaki's global heights over a finitely generated field to a fibration which is generically toric. We illustrate the last result in a natural example where non-discrete non-archimedean absolute values really matter.

Tropical Skeletons

In this paper, we study the interplay between tropical and analytic geometry for closed subschemes of toric varieties. Let $K$ be a complete non-Archimedean field, and let $X$ be a closed subscheme of a toric variety over $K$. We define the tropical skeleton of $X$ as the subset of the associated Berkovich space $X^{\rm an}$ which collects all Shilov boundary points in the fibers of the Kajiwara--Payne tropicalization map. We develop polyhedral criteria for limit points to belong to the tropical skeleton, and for the tropical skeleton to be closed. We apply the limit point criteria to the question of continuity of the canonical section of the tropicalization map on the multiplicity-one locus. This map is known to be continuous on all torus orbits; we prove criteria for continuity when crossing torus orbits. When $X$ is schön and defined over a discretely valued field, we show that the tropical skeleton coincides with a skeleton of a strictly semistable pair, and is naturally isomorphic to the parameterizing complex of Helm--Katz.

Positivity properties of metrics and delta-forms

In previous work, we have introduced delta-forms on the Berkovich analytification of an algebraic variety in order to study smooth or formal metrics via their associated Chern delta-forms. In this paper, we investigate positivity properties of delta-forms and delta-currents. This leads to various plurisubharmonicity notions for continuous metrics on line bundles. In the case of a formal metric, we show that many of these positivity notions are equivalent to Zhang's semipositivity. For piecewise smooth metrics, we prove that plurisubharmonicity can be tested on tropical charts in terms of convex geometry. We apply this to smooth metrics, to canonical metrics on abelian varieties and to toric metrics on toric varieties.
