Polaronic slowing of fermionic impurities in lattice Bose-Fermi mixtures

We generalize the application of small polaron theory to ultracold gases of Ref. [\onlinecite{jaksch_njp1}] to the case of Bose-Fermi mixtures, where both components are loaded into an optical lattice. In a suitable range of parameters, the mixture can be described within a Bogoliubov approach in the presence of fermionic (dynamic) impurities and an effective description in terms of polarons applies. In the dilute limit of the slow impurity regime, the hopping of fermionic particles is exponentially renormalized due to polaron formation, regardless of the sign of the Bose-Fermi interaction. This should lead to clear experimental signatures of polaronic effects, once the regime of interest is reached. The validity of our approach is analyzed in the light of currently available experiments. We provide results for the hopping renormalization factor for different values of temperature, density and Bose-Fermi interaction for three-dimensional $^{87}\rm{Rb}-^{40}\rm{K}$ mixtures in optical lattice.

Stochastic Mean-Field Theory: Method and Application to the Disordered Bose-Hubbard Model at Finite Temperature and Speckle Disorder

We discuss the stochastic mean-field theory (SMFT) method which is a new approach for describing disordered Bose systems in the thermodynamic limit including localization and dimensional effects. We explicate the method in detail and apply it to the disordered Bose-Hubbard model at finite temperature, with on-site box disorder, as well as experimentally relevant unbounded speckle disorder. We find that disorder-induced condensation and reentrant behavior at constant filling are only possible at low temperatures, beyond the reach of current experiments [Pasienski et al., arXiv:0908.1182]. Including off-diagonal hopping disorder as well, we investigate its effect on the phase diagram in addition to pure on-site disorder. To make contact to present experiments on a quantitative level, we also combine SMFT with an LDA approach and obtain the condensate fraction in the presence of an external trapping potential.

Spectral function of the Anderson impurity model at finite temperatures

Using the functional renormalization group (FRG) and the numerical renormalization group (NRG), we calculate the spectral function of the Anderson impurity model at zero and finite temperatures. In our FRG scheme spin fluctuations are treated non-perturbatively via a suitable Hubbard-Stratonovich field, but vertex corrections are neglected. A comparison with our highly accurate NRG results shows that this FRG scheme gives a quantitatively good description of the spectral line-shape at zero and finite temperatures both in the weak and strong coupling regimes, although at zero temperature the FRG is not able to reproduce the known exponential narrowing of the Kondo resonance at strong coupling.

Lattice-Ramp Induced Dynamics in an Interacting Bose-Bose Mixture

We investigate a bosonic quantum gas consisting of two interacting species in an optical lattice at zero and finite temperature. The equilibrium properties and dynamics of this system are obtained by means of the Gutzwiller mean-field method. In particular we model recent experiments where the ramp-up of the optical lattice occurs on a time scale comparable to the tunneling time of the bosons. We demonstrate the violation of adiabaticity of this process with respect to the many-body quantum states, and reproduce and explain the oscillations of the visibility as a function of ramp-up time, as seen in experiments.

Nonequilibrium Spin Dynamics in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Model

Motivated by recent experiments on molecular quantum dots we investigate the relaxation of pure spin states when coupled to metallic leads. Under suitable conditions these systems are well described by a ferromagnetic Kondo model. Using two recently developed theoretical approaches, the time-dependent numerical renormalization group and an extended ow equation method, we calculate the real-time evolution of a Kondo spin into its partially screened steady state. We obtain exact analytical results which agree well with numerical implementations of both methods. Analytical expressions for the steady state magnetization and the dependence of the long-time relaxation on microscopic parameters are established. We find the long-time relaxation process to be much faster in the regime of anisotropic Kondo couplings. The steady state magnetization is found to deviate significantly from its thermal equilibrium value.

Insulating behavior with spin and charge order in the ionic Hubbard model

Paramagnetic solutions of the ionic Hubbard model at half-filling in dimensions $D>2$ indicate that the band and the Mott insulator phases are separated by a metallic phase. We present zero-temperature dynamical mean-field theory solutions, which include antiferromagnetic long-range order, and show that the one-particle spectral functions always possess an energy gap and therefore the system is insulating for all interaction strengths. The staggered charge density modulation coexists with antiferromagnetic long-range order of Néel type.

Hall Effect in spinor condensates

We consider a neutral spinor condensate moving in a periodic magnetic field. The spatially dependent magnetic field induces an effective spin dependent Lorentz force which in turn gives rise to a spin dependent Hall effect. Simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation quantify the Hall effect. We discuss possible experimental realizations.

Competition between Anderson localization and antiferromagnetism in correlated lattice fermion systems with disorder

The magnetic ground state phase diagram of the disordered Hubbard model at half-filling is computed in dynamical mean-field theory supplemented with the spin resolved, typical local density of states. The competition between many-body correlations and disorder is found to stabilize paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic metallic phases at weak interactions. Strong disorder leads to Anderson localization of the electrons and suppresses the antiferromagnetic long-range order. Slater and Heisenberg antiferromagnets respond characteristically different to disorder. The results can be tested with cold fermionic atoms loaded into optical lattices.

Trionic phase of ultracold fermions in an optical lattice: A variational study

To investigate ultracold fermionic atoms of three internal states (colors) in an optical lattice, subject to strong attractive interaction, we study the attractive three-color Hubbard model in infinite dimensions by using a variational approach. We find a quantum phase transition between a weak-coupling superconducting phase and a strong-coupling trionic phase where groups of three atoms are bound to a composite fermion. We show how the Gutzwiller variational theory can be reformulated in terms of an effective field theory with three-body interactions and how this effective field theory can be solved exactly in infinite dimensions by using the methods of dynamical mean field theory.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics of Anisotropic Large Spins in the Kondo Regime: Time-Dependent Numerical Renormalization Group Analysis

We investigate the time-dependent Kondo effect in a single-molecule magnet (SMM) strongly coupled to metallic electrodes. Describing the SMM by a Kondo model with large spin S > 1/2, we analyze the underscreening of the local moment and the effect of anisotropy terms on the relaxation dynamics of the magnetization. Underscreening by single-channel Kondo processes leads to a logarithmically slow relaxation, while finite uniaxial anisotropy causes a saturation of the SMM's magnetization. Additional transverse anisotropy terms induce quantum spin tunneling and a pseudospin-1/2 Kondo effect sensitive to the spin parity.

Entanglement and Criticality in Quantum Impurity Systems

We investigate the entanglement between a spin and its environment in impurity systems which exhibit a second-order quantum phase transition. As an application, we employ the spin-boson model, describing a two-level system (spin) coupled to a subohmic bosonic bath with power-law spectral density, ${\cal J}(ω)\propto ω^s$ and $0<s<1$. Combining Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group method and hyperscaling relations, we demonstrate that the entanglement between the spin and its environment is always enhanced at the quantum phase transition resulting in a visible cusp (maximum) in the entropy of entanglement. We formulate a correspondence between criticality and impurity entanglement entropy, and the relevance of these ideas to Nano-systems is outlined.

Two-Dimensional Dynamics of Ultracold Atoms in Optical Lattices

We analyze the dynamics of ultracold atoms in optical lattices induced by a sudden shift of the underlying harmonic trapping potential. In order to study the effect of strong interactions, dimensionality and lattice topology on transport properties, we consider bosonic atoms with arbitrarily strong repulsive interactions, on a two-dimensional square lattice and a hexagonal lattice. On the square lattice we find insulating behavior for weakly interacting atoms and slow relaxation for strong interactions, even when a Mott plateau is present, which in one dimension blocks the dynamics. On the hexagonal lattice the center of mass relaxes to the new equilibrium for any interaction strength.

Color Superfluidity and "Baryon" Formation in Ultracold Fermions

We study fermionic atoms of three different internal quantum states (colors) in an optical lattice, which are interacting through attractive on site interactions, U<0. Using a variational calculation for equal color densities and small couplings, |U| < |U_C|, a color superfluid state emerges with a tendency to domain formation. For |U| > |U_C|, triplets of atoms with different colors form singlet fermions (trions). These phases are the analogies of the color superconducting and baryonic phases in QCD. In ultracold fermions, this transition is found to be of second order. Our results demonstrate that quantum simulations with ultracold gases may shed light on outstanding problems in quantum field theory.

Kondo effect in coupled quantum dots with RKKY interaction: Finite temperature and magnetic field effects

We study transport through two quantum dots coupled by an RKKY interaction as a function of temperature and magnetic field. By applying the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method we obtain the transmission and the linear conductance. At zero temperature and magnetic field, we observe a quantum phase transition between the Kondo screened state and a local spin singlet as the RKKY interaction is tuned. Above the critical RKKY coupling the Kondo peak is split. However, we find that both finite temperature and magnetic field restore the Kondo resonance. Our results agree well with recent transport experiments on gold grain quantum dots in the presence of magnetic impurities.

Transverse Meissner Physics of Planar Superconductors with Columnar Pins

The statistical mechanics of thermally excited vortex lines with columnar defects can be mapped onto the physics of interacting quantum particles with quenched random disorder in one less dimension. The destruction of the Bose glass phase in Type II superconductors, when the external magnetic field is tilted sufficiently far from the column direction, is described by a poorly understood non-Hermitian quantum phase transition. We present here exact results for this transition in (1+1)-dimensions, obtained by mapping the problem in the hard core limit onto one-dimensional fermions described by a non-Hermitian tight binding model. Both site randomness and the relatively unexplored case of bond randomness are considered. Analysis near the mobility edge and near the band center in the latter case is facilitated by a real space renormalization group procedure used previously for Hermitian quantum problems with quenched randomness in one dimension.

Hidden Caldeira-Leggett dissipation in a Bose-Fermi Kondo model

We show that the Bose-Fermi Kondo model (BFKM), which may find applicability both to certain dissipative mesoscopic qubit devices and to heavy fermion systems described by the Kondo lattice model, can be mapped exactly onto the Caldeira-Leggett model. This mapping requires an ohmic bosonic bath and an Ising-type coupling between the latter and the impurity spin. This allows us to conclude unambiguously that there is an emergent Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transition in the BFKM with an ohmic bosonic bath. By applying a bosonic numerical renormalization group approach, we thoroughly probe physical quantities close to the quantum phase transition.

Flavor Degeneracy and Effects of Disorder in Ultracold Atom Systems

Cold atoms in optical lattices offer an exciting new laboratory where quantum many-body phenomena can be realized in a highly controlled way. They can even serve as quantum simulators for notoriously difficult problems like high-temperature superconductivity. This review is focussed on recent developments and new results in multi-component systems. Fermionic atoms with SU(N) symmetry have exotic superfluid and flavor-ordered ground states. We discuss symmetry breaking, collective modes and detection issues. Bosonic multi-flavor ensembles allow for engineering of spin Hamiltonians which are interesting from a quantum computation point of view. Finally, we will address the competition of disorder and interaction in optical lattices. We present a complete phase diagram obtained within dynamical mean-field theory and discuss experimental observability of the Mott and Anderson phases.

Mott--Hubbard and Anderson Transitions in Dynamical Mean--Field Theory

The Anderson--Hubbard Hamiltonian at half--filling is investigated within dynamical mean--field theory at zero temperature. The local density of states is calculated by taking the geometric and arithmetic mean, respectively. The non--magnetic ground state phase diagrams obtained within the different averaging schemes are compared.
