SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating stripe order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We present an SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating stripe order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The theory is based on a fractionalization of the electron operators in fermionic chargons with a pseudospin degree of freedom, and charge neutral spinons capturing fluctuations of the spin orientation. The chargons are treated in a renormalized mean-field theory. We focus on regions of the phase diagram where they undergo stripe order. The spinons are described by a non-linear sigma model with pseudospin stiffnesses determined by the chargons. They prevent breaking of the physical SU(2) spin symmetry at any finite temperature, resulting in a charge ordered pseudogap phase with a reconstructed Fermi surface and a spin gap. The spectral function for single-particle excitations exhibits a collection of Fermi arcs and other structures. The arcs appear in various regions of the Brillouin zone, but never exclusively around the Brillouin zone diagonals.

Coexisting magnetic, charge, and superconducting orders in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We perform a renormalized mean-field study of the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model, focusing on the intricate interplay and possible coexistence of magnetic, charge, and superconducting orders. We improve on conventional mean-field theory by utilizing a renormalization group framework that captures high-energy fluctuations. This method generates effective magnetic and $d$-wave pairing interactions, and allows for an unbiased exploration of coexisting phases at weak and moderate interaction strengths. Unrestricted mean-field calculations of the effective Hamiltonian on large finite lattices are combined with analyses in the thermodynamic limit, revealing a rich phase diagram with extensive regions of coexisting orders. We find that $d$-wave superconductivity coexists with N\'eel order on the electron-doped side. On the hole-doped side, superconductivity is found to coexist with spiral or stripe magnetic orders. Within the stripe ordered region, the superconducting order parameter is spatially modulated, with a period that follows the charge modulation of the stripes. Below van Hove filling, pairing provides the primary energy gain, while the stripe order yields only a small, and hence fragile, additional energy lowering.

Spin susceptibility in a pseudogap state with fluctuating spiral magnetic order

We compute the electron spin susceptibility in the pseudogap regime of the two-dimensional Hubbard model in the framework of a SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating magnetic order. The electrons are fractionalized in fermionic chargons with a pseudospin degree of freedom and bosonic spinons. The chargons are treated in a renormalized mean-field theory and order in a N\'eel or spiral magnetic state in a broad range around half-filling below a transition temperature $T^*$. Fluctuations of the spin orientation are captured by the spinons. Their dynamics is governed by a non-linear sigma model, with spin stiffnesses computed microscopically from the pseudospin susceptibility of the chargons. The SU(2) gauge group is higgsed in the chargon sector, and the spinon fluctuations prevent breaking of the physical spin symmetry at any finite temperature. The electron spin susceptibility obtained from the gauge theory shares many features with experimental observations in the pseudogap regime of cuprate superconductors: the dynamical spin susceptibility $S(\mathbf{q},\omega)$ has a spin gap, the static uniform spin susceptibility $\kappa_s$ decreases strongly with temperature below $T^*$, and the NMR relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ vanishes exponentially in the low temperature limit if the ground state is quantum disordered. At low hole doping, $S(\mathbf{q},\omega)$ exhibits nematicity below a transition temperature $T_{\rm nem} < T^*$, and at larger hole doping in the entire pseudogap regime below $T^*$.

Spin stiffnesses and stability of magnetic order in the lightly doped two-dimensional Hubbard model

We analyze the density dependence of the spin stiffnesses and the stability of magnetic order with respect to quantum fluctuations in the two-dimensional Hubbard model close to half-filling. The stiffnesses are computed from the spin susceptibility obtained from a random phase approximation in a magnetically ordered state. For a sizable next-to-nearest neighbor hopping amplitude and a moderate Hubbard interaction, the mean-field ground state is a N\'eel antiferromagnet in the electron doped regime at and above half-filling, and a planar circular spiral state in the hole doped regime below half-filling. Upon electron doping, the N\'eel stiffness decreases smoothly and not very steeply. By contrast, the in-plane and out-of-plane stiffnesses in the spiral state drop abruptly at half-filling. The out-of-plane stiffness even drops to zero, and then increases again very slowly upon increasing hole doping. At finite temperatures, the N\'eel-to-spiral transition is shifted into the hole doped regime, the stiffnesses are continuous functions of the density, and they vanish at the transition. For small hole doping, the spin stiffnesses describe the quantum fluctuations only in a small momentum range, which shrinks to zero upon approaching half-filling. Using the above results, we show that the quantum ground state of the lightly electron doped Hubbard model remains N\'eel ordered, while quantum fluctuations probably destroy the spiral long-range order in the hole doped regime, giving rise to a quantum disordered state with a spin gap.

Collective mode spectroscopy in time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors

Time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) superconductors show a rich collective mode spectrum. In general, collective excitations in superconductors can provide crucial information on the symmetry of the broken phase, in particular, serving as a fingerprint for determining the groundstate gap symmetry. In this work, we consider several even parity two-dimensional TRSB superconductors characterized by an order parameter of the form $\Delta = \Delta_1 + i\Delta_2$. We provide a classification scheme of the collective excitations in the above systems as a function of the ratio between the components $\Delta_1/\Delta_2$. In order to excite the modes in the systems we have adopted two different probes: a quench of the condensate symmetry and a finite momentum transfer induced by an external electric field. Both methods allow us to excite and characterize the different modes in the spectra. To further interpret the results of the numerical calculations we provide a Ginzburg-Landau analysis and we construct a dynamical theory, deriving the linearized equations of motion in the pseudospin formalism. Our results could help distinguish between different order parameters symmetries of a TRSB superconducting condensate and estimate the magnitude of its different components.

Spiral to stripe transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We obtain an almost complete understanding of the mean-field phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice with a sizable next-nearest neighbor hopping and a moderate interaction strength. In particular, we clarify the nature of the transition region between the spiral and the stripe phase. Complementing previous [Phys. Rev. B 108, 035139 (2023)] real-space Hartree-Fock calculations on large finite lattices, we solve the mean-field equations for coplanar unidirectional magnetic order directly in the thermodynamic limit, and we determine the nature of the magnetic states right below the mean-field critical temperature $T^*$ by a Landau free energy analysis. While the magnetic order for filling factors $n \geq 1$ is always of N\'eel type, for $n \leq 1$ the following sequence of magnetic states is found as a function of increasing hole-doping: N\'eel, planar circular spiral, multi-spiral, and collinear spin-charge stripe states. Multi-spiral states are superpositions of several spirals with distinct wave vectors, and lead to concomitant charge order. We finally point out that nematic and charge orders inherited from the magnetic order can survive even in the presence of fluctuations, and we present a corresponding qualitative phase diagram.

Marginal Fermi liquid behavior at the onset of $\boldsymbol{2k_F}$ density wave order in two-dimensional metals with flat hot spots

We analyze quantum fluctuation effects at the onset of incommensurate $2k_F$ charge- or spin-density wave order in two-dimensional metals, for a model where the ordering wave vector $\boldsymbol{Q}$ connects a single pair of hot spots on the Fermi surface with a vanishing Fermi surface curvature. The tangential momentum dependence of the bare dispersion near the hot spots is proportional to $|k_t|^\alpha$ with $\alpha > 2$. We first compute the order parameter susceptibility and the fermion self-energy in random phase approximation (RPA). Logarithmic divergences are subsequently treated by a renormalization group analysis. The coupling between the order parameter fluctuations and the fermions vanishes logarithmically in the low-energy limit. As a consequence, the logarithmic divergences found in RPA do not sum up to anomalous power laws. Instead, only logarithmic corrections to Fermi liquid behavior are obtained. In particular, the quasiparticle weight and the Fermi velocity vanish logarithmically at the hot spots.

Comprehensive mean-field analysis of magnetic and charge orders in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We present an unbiased mean-field analysis of magnetic and charge orders in the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice, both at zero and finite temperatures. Unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations on large finite lattices are complemented by solutions restricted to Néel and circular spiral order in the thermodynamic limit. The magnetic states are classified by a systematic scheme based on the dominant Fourier components of the spin texture. On finite lattices a whole zoo of ordering patterns appears. We show that many of these states are finite size artifacts related to the limited choice of ordering wave vectors on a finite lattice. In the thermodynamic limit only three classes of states with a relatively simple structure survive: Néel, circular spiral, and stripe states. Stripes involve also charge order and can be unidirectional or bidirectional, with horizontal and/or vertical orientation. We present complete phase diagrams in the plane spanned by electron density and temperature, for a moderate Hubbard interaction and various choices of the next-nearest neighbor hopping amplitude.

Non Fermi liquid behavior at flat hot spots from quantum critical fluctuations at the onset of charge- or spin-density wave order

We analyze quantum fluctuation effects at the onset of charge or spin density wave order with a $2k_F$ wave vector $\mathbf{Q}$ in two-dimensional metals -- for the special case where $\mathbf{Q}$ connects a pair of hot spots situated at high symmetry points of the Fermi surface with a vanishing Fermi surface curvature. We compute the order parameter susceptibility and the fermion self-energy in one-loop approximation. The susceptibility has a pronounced peak at $\mathbf{Q}$, and the self-energy displays non-Fermi liquid behavior at the hot spots, with a linear frequency dependence of its imaginary part. The real part of the one-loop self-energy exhibits logarithmic divergences with universal prefactors as a function of both frequency and momentum, which may be interpreted as perturbative signatures of power laws with universal anomalous dimensions. As a result, one obtains a non-Fermi liquid metal with a vanishing quasiparticle weight at the hot spots, and a renormalized dispersion relation with anomalous algebraic momentum dependencies near the hot spots.

SU(2) gauge theory of the pseudogap phase in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We present a SU(2) gauge theory of fluctuating magnetic order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The theory is based on a fractionalization of electrons in fermionic chargons and bosonic spinons. The chargons undergo Néel or spiral magnetic order below a density dependent transition temperature $T^*$. Fluctuations of the spin orientation are described by a non-linear sigma model obtained from a gradient expansion of the spinon action. The spin stiffnesses are computed from a renormalization group improved random phase approximation. Our approximations are applicable for a weak or moderate Hubbard interaction. The spinon fluctuations prevent magnetic long-range order of the electrons at any finite temperature. The phase with magnetic chargon order exhibits many features characterizing the pseudogap regime in high-$T_c$ cuprates: a strong reduction of charge carrier density, a spin gap, Fermi arcs, and electronic nematicity.

Spin stiffness, spectral weight, and Landau damping of magnons in metallic spiral magnets

We analyze the properties of magnons in metallic electron systems with spiral magnetic order. Our analysis is based on the random phase approximation for the susceptibilities of tight binding electrons with a local Hubbard interaction in two or three dimensions. We identify three magnon branches from poles in the susceptibilities, one associated with in-plane, the other two associated with out-of-plane fluctuations of the spiral order parameter. We derive general expressions for the spin stiffnesses and the spectral weights of the magnon modes, from which also the magnon velocities can be obtained. Moreover, we determine the size of the decay rates of the magnons due to Landau damping. While the decay rate of the in-plane mode is of the order of its excitation energy, the decay rate of the out-of-plane mode is smaller so that these modes are asymptotically stable excitations even in the presence of Landau damping.

Non-Hermitian band topology from momentum-dependent relaxation in two-dimensional metals with spiral magnetism

We study the emergence of non-Hermitian band topology in a two-dimensional metal with planar spiral magnetism due to a momentum-dependent relaxation rate. A sufficiently strong momentum dependence of the relaxation rate leads to exceptional points in the Brillouin zone, where the Hamiltonian is nondiagonalizable. The exceptional points appear in pairs with opposite topological charges and are connected by arc-shaped branch cuts. We show that exceptional points inside hole and electron pockets, which are generally present in a spiral magnetic state with a small magnetic gap, can cause a drastic change of the Fermi surface topology by merging those pockets at isolated points in the Brillouin zone. We derive simple rules for the evolution of the eigenstates under semiclassical motion through these crossing points, which yield geometric phases depending only on the Fermi surface topology. The spectral function observed in photoemission exhibits Fermi arcs. Its momentum dependence is smooth -- despite of the nonanalyticities in the complex quasiparticle band structure.

Fluctuation effects at the onset of $\bf 2k_F$ density wave order with two pairs of hot spots in two-dimensional metals

We analyze quantum fluctuation effects at the onset of charge or spin density wave order in two-dimensional metals with an incommensurate nesting ($2k_F$) wave vector connecting two pairs of hot spots on the Fermi surface. We first compute the momentum and frequency dependence of the fermion self-energy near the hot spots to leading order in a perturbation expansion (one loop). Non-Fermi liquid behavior with a linear (in energy) quasi-particle decay rate and a logarithmically vanishing quasi-particle weight is obtained. The momentum dependence of the self-energy entails only finite renormalizations of the Fermi velocity and the Fermi surface curvature at the hot spots. The perturbative one-loop result is not self-consistent and casts doubt on the stability of the $2k_F$ quantum critical point. We construct a self-consistent solution of the one-loop equations with self-energy feedback, where the quantum critical point is stabilized rather than being destroyed by fluctuations, while the non-Fermi liquid behavior as found in the perturbative one-loop calculation is confirmed.

Dynamical functional renormalization group computation of order parameters and critical temperatures in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We analyze the interplay of antiferromagnetism and pairing in the two dimensional Hubbard model with a moderate repulsive interaction. Coupled charge, magnetic and pairing fluctuations above the energy scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking are treated by a functional renormalization group flow, while the formation of gaps and order below that scale is treated in mean-field theory. The full frequency dependences of interaction vertices and gap functions is taken into account. We compute the magnetic and pairing gap functions as a function of doping $p$ and compare with results from a static approximation. In spite of strong frequency dependences of the effective interactions and of the pairing gap, important physical results from previous static functional renormalization group calculations are confirmed. In particular, there is a sizable doping regime with robust pairing coexisting with Néel or incommensurate antiferromagnetism. The critical temperature for magnetic order is interpreted as pseudogap crossover temperature. Computing the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature from the superfluid phase stiffness, we obtain a superconducting dome in the $(p,T)$ phase diagram centered around 15 percent hole doping.

Charge carrier drop at the onset of pseudogap behavior in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

We show that antiferromagnetic spin-density wave order in the two-dimensional Hubbard model yields a drop of the charge carrier density as observed in recent transport measurements for cuprate superconductors in high magnetic fields upon entering the pseudogap regime. The amplitude and the (generally incommensurate) wave vector of the spin-density wave is obtained from dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). An extrapolation of the finite temperature results to zero temperature yields an approximately linear doping dependence of the magnetic gap $Δ(p) \propto p^*-p$ in a broad doping range below the critical doping $p^*$. The magnetic order leads to a Fermi surface reconstruction with electron and hole pockets, where electron pockets exist only in a restricted doping range below $p^*$. DC charge transport properties are computed by combining the renormalized band structure as obtained from the DMFT with a doping-independent phenomenological scattering rate. A pronounced drop of the longitudinal conductivity and the Hall number in a narrow doping range below $p^*$ is obtained.

Phase stiffness in an antiferromagnetic superconductor

We analyze the suppression of the phase stiffness in a superconductor by antiferromagnetic order. The analysis is based on a general expression for the phase stiffness in a mean-field state with coexisting spin-singlet superconductivity and spiral magnetism. Neel order is included as a special case. Close to half-filling, where the pairing gap is much smaller than the magnetic gap, a simple formula for the phase stiffness in terms of magnetic quasi-particle bands is derived. The phase stiffness is determined by charge carriers in small electron or hole pockets in this regime. The general analysis is complemented by a numerical calculation for the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest and next-to-nearest neighbor hopping amplitudes at a moderate interaction strength. The resulting phase stiffness exhibits a striking electron-hole asymmetry. In the ground state, it is larger than the pairing gap on the hole-doped side, and smaller for electron doping. Hence, in the hole-doped regime near half-filling the ground state pairing gap sets the scale for the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature T_c^{KT}, while in the slightly electron-doped regime T_c^{KT} is determined essentially by the ground state phase stiffness.

Longitudinal conductivity and Hall coefficient in two-dimensional metals with spiral magnetic order

We compute the longitudinal dc conductivity and the Hall conductivity in a two-dimensional metal with spiral magnetic order. Scattering processes are modeled by a momentum-independent relaxation rate $Γ$. We derive expressions for the conductivities, which are valid for arbitrary values of $Γ$. Both intraband and interband contributions are fully taken into account. For small $Γ$, the ratio of interband and intraband contributions is of order $Γ^2$. In the limit $Γ\to 0$, the conductivity formulas assume a simple quasiparticle form, as derived by Voruganti et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 45, 13945 (1992)]. Using the complete expressions, we can show that relaxation rates in the regime of recent transport experiments for cuprate superconductors in high magnetic fields are sufficiently small to justify the application of these simplified formulas. The longitudinal conductivity exhibits a pronounced nematicity in the spiral state. The drop of the Hall number as a function of doping observed recently in several cuprate compounds can be described with a suitable phenomenological ansatz for the magnetic order parameter.

Fluctuation effects at the onset of $\bf 2k_F$ density wave order with one pair of hot spots in two-dimensional metals

We analyze quantum fluctuation effects at the onset of charge or spin density wave order in two-dimensional metals with an incommensurate $2k_F$ wave vector connecting a single pair of hot spots on the Fermi surface. We compute the momentum and frequency dependence of the fermion self-energy near the hot spots to leading order in a fluctuation expansion (one loop). Non-Fermi liquid behavior with anomalous frequency scaling and a vanishing quasi particle weight is obtained. The momentum dependence yields a divergent renormalization of the Fermi velocity and a flattening of the Fermi surface near the hot spots. Going beyond the leading order calculation we find that the one-loop result is not self-consistent. We show that any momentum-independent self-energy with a non-Fermi liquid frequency exponent wipes out the peak of the polarization function at the $2k_F$ wave vector, and thus destroys the mechanism favoring $2k_F$ density waves over those with generic wave vectors. However, a $2k_F$ density wave quantum critical point might survive in presence of a sufficiently flat renormalized Fermi surface.
