Large differential attosecond delays in solid state photoemission

Time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy provides access to the electronic structure and non-equilibrium electron dynamics in matter. At solid surfaces photoemission dynamics can be investigated on its natural time scale by measuring attosecond time delays of emitted electrons. Photoelectrons with final state energies of several tens of eV need tens to hundreds of attoseconds to be released into the vacuum. Competing effects determine the emission dynamics and, hence, the full picture of the process is still under debate. The rather large energy differences between the final states probed in commonly reported relative photoemission delays obscure their complex fine structure and hinders the interpretation of the measurements. Here we report differential attosecond delays $τ_{\mathrm{DAD}}$, i.e., relative photoemission delays for energetically close-lying spin-orbit split states. Differential attosecond delays on the order of 30 to 100 as for Bi 5d, Te 4d, and Se 3d core level photoemission from Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ can neither be attributed to intra-atomic delays, nor to ballistic transport and subsequent emission. Instead, calculations based on the one-step photoemission theory reveal that photoemission delays vary strongly on the energy scale of the spin-orbit splitting and quantitatively match experimental observations. This strong variation arises from multiple scattering at the surface leading to final states that involve both evanescent and propagating Bloch waves. Their relative amplitudes vary strongly affecting thereby the timing of the photoemission event since evanescent and propagating components exhibit inherently different dynamics.

Pure dephasing induced single-photon parametric down-conversion in an ultrastrong coupled plasmon-exciton system

In coupled quantum systems pure dephasing mechanisms acting on one constituent of the hybrid system break symmetry and enable optical transitions which are forbidden in the non-coupled system, i.e., the pure dephasing bath opens a cascaded dissipation pathway. Here we show that this mechanism enables single-photon induced parametric down-conversion in an ultrastrongly coupled plasmon-exciton system. Fast pure dephasing of the exciton is shown to support photon pair generation as the dominant energy relaxation pathway.

Weak localisation enhanced ultrathin scattering media

The brilliant white appearance of ultrathin scattering media with low refractive index contrast and the underlying radiative transport phenomena fascinate scientists for more than a decade. Examples of such systems are the scales of beetles of the genus Cyphochilus, photonic network structures or disordered Bragg stacks (DBS). While previous studies relate the highly efficient scattering in the scales to the anisotropy of the intra-scale network and diffusive light transport, the coherent radiation propagation dynamics remained unaccounted for. Here, we identify different coherent light transport regimes using time and spatially resolved coherent light scattering spectroscopy. At least 20% of the collected scattered light originates from weakly localised random photonic modes, in contrast to solely diffusive light transport assumed to date. The identification of this significant role of weak localisation in ultrathin brilliant scattering media establishes a new design paradigm for efficient scattering optical materials.

Tunable Surface Phonon Polariton based THz Cavity

Designing and realizing switchable cavities at the infrared and THz frequencies is crucial for achieving novel integrated photonic circuits. Semiconductors like SiC support the propagation of surface phonon polaritons with the ability to tune carrier concentrations via doping. In this manuscript, we investigate the tunability of coupled surface-phonon-plasmon polariton waves inside an elliptical cavity build from a metal-semiconductor heterostructure. We theoretically study the impact of the extra n- and p-carrier doping on the resonant modes of the cavity and we show that for certain cavity modes a Purcell factor of 180 and an on/off switching behavior can be achieved via charge injection. The cavity mode tuning range spans approximately 13 times the resonance width.

Coherent photon coincidence spectroscopy of single quantum systems

Non-equilibrium photon correlations of coherently excited single quantum systems can reveal their internal quantum dynamics and provide spectroscopic access. Here we propose and discuss the fundamentals of a coherent photon coincidence spectroscopy based on the application of laser pulses with variable delay and the detection of an time-averaged two-photon coincidence rate. For demonstration, two simple but important cases, i.e., an exciton - biexciton in a quantum dot and two coupled quantum emitters, are investigated based on quantum dynamics simulations demonstrating that this nonlinear spectroscopy reveals information specific to the particular single quantum system.
