A Travelling Salesman Paths within nxn (n = 3, 4, 5) Magic Squares

Intriguing symmetries are uncovered regarding all magic squares of orders 3, 4, and 5, with 1, 880, and 275,305,224 distinct configurations, respectively. In analogy with the travelling salesman problem, the distributions of the total topological distances of the paths travelled by passing through all the vertices (matrix elements) only once and spanning all elements of the matrix are analyzed. Symmetries are found to characterise the distributions of the total topological distances in these instances. These results raise open questions about the symmetries found in higher-order magic squares and the formulation of their minimum and maximum total path lengths.

Entropy and chirality in sphinx tilings

As a toy model of chiral interactions in crowded spaces, we consider sphinx tilings in finite regions of the triangular lattice. The sphinx tiles, hexiamonds composed of six equilateral triangles in the shape of a stylized sphinx, come in left and right enantiomorphs. Regions scaled up from the unit sphinx by an integer factor ("Sphinx frames") require tiles of both chiral forms to produce tilings, including crystalline, quasicrystalline, and fully disordered tilings. For frames up to order 13, we describe methods that permit exact enumeration and computation of partition functions using "accelerated backtracking," "seam," and "dangler" algorithms. For larger frames, we introduce a Monte Carlo (MC) method to sample typical tilings. Key to the latter is the identification of fundamental shapes (polyads) that admit multiple tilings and which allow a rejection-free MC simulation.

The Binary Two-Up Sequence

The Binary Two-Up Sequence is the lexicographically earliest sequence of distinct nonnegative integers with the property that the binary expansion of the n-th term has no 1-bits in common with any of the previous floor(n/2) terms. We show that the sequence can be decomposed into ``atoms'', which are sequences of 4, 6, or 8 numbers whose binary expansions match certain patterns, and that the sequence is the limiting form of a certain ``word'' involving the atoms. This leads to a fairly explicit formula for the terms, and in particular establishes the conjecture that every nonzero term is the sum of at most two powers of 2.

Retention capacity of random surfaces

We introduce a "water retention" model for liquids captured on a random surface with open boundaries, and investigate it for both continuous and discrete surface heights 0, 1, ... n-1, on a square lattice with a square boundary. The model is found to have several intriguing features, including a non-monotonic dependence of the retention on the number of levels in the discrete case: for many n, the retention is counterintuitively greater than that of an n+1-level system. The behavior is explained using percolation theory, by mapping it to a 2-level system with variable probability. Results in 1-dimension are also found.
