The energy balancing parameter

A parameter method is introduced in order to estimate the relationship among the various variables of a system in equilibrium, where the potential energy functions are incompletely known or the quantum mechanical calculations very difficult. No formal proof of the method is given; instead, a sufficient number of valuable examples are shown to make the case for the method's usefulness in classical and quantum systems. The mathematical methods required are quite elementary: basic algebra and minimization of power functions. This method blends advantageously with a simple but powerful approximate method for quantum mechanics, sidestepping entirely formal operators and differential equations. It is applied to the derivation of various well-known results involving centrally symmetric potentials for a quantum particle such as the hydrogen-like atom, the elastic potential and other cases of interest. The same formulas provide estimates for previously unsolved cases. PACS: 03.65.-w 30.00.00

The Optimal Form of Distribution Networks Applied to the Kidney and Lung

A model is proposed to minimize the total volume of the main distribution networks of fluids in relation to the organ form. The minimization analysis shows that the overall exterior form of distribution networks is a modified ellipsoid, a geometric form that is a good approximation to the external anatomy of the kidney and lung. The variational procedure implementing this minimization is similar to the traditional isoperimetric theorems of geometry. A revised version of this preprint that expands Section 4 will be published in the Journal of Biological Systems, World Scientific Publishing.

Distribution networks and the optimal form of the kidney and lung

A model is proposed to minimize the total volume of the main distribution networks of fluids in organs such as the kidney and the lung. A consequence of the minimization analysis is that the optimal overall form of the organs is a modified ellipsoid. The variational procedure implementing this minimization is similar to the traditional isoperimetric theorems of geometry.

Site Model of Allometric Scaling and Fractal Distribution Networks of Organs

At the basic geometric level, the distribution networks carrying vital materials in living organisms, and the units such as the nephrons and alveoli, form a scaling structure named here the site model. This unified view of the allometry of the kidney and lung of mammals is in agreement with the existing data, and in some cases, improves the predictions of the previous fractal model of the lung. Allometric scaling of surfaces and volumes of relevant organ parts are derived from a few simple propositions about the collective characteristics of the sites. New hypotheses and predictions are formulated, some verified by the data, while others remain to be tested, such as the scaling of the number of capillaries and the site model description of other organs.
