Thermodynamic Instabilities of Generalized Exotic BTZ Black Holes

We examine the conjecture that black holes violating the reverse isoperimetric inequality have negative specific heat at constant volume $C_V$. We test this conjecture on the family of generalized exotic Bañados, Teitelbiom and Zanelli (BTZ) black holes and find that $C_V$ can be positive even when the reverse isoperimetric inequality is violated, providing a counter example to the conjecture. However in all cases where $C_V$ is positive, the specific heat at constant pressure $C_P$ is negative, indicating that generalized exotic black holes are thermodynamically unstable, suggesting that a broader version of the conjecture might hold.

Entanglement Harvesting with Moving Mirrors

We study the phenomenon of entanglement extraction from the vacuum of a massless scalar field in $(1+1)$ dimensional spacetime in presence of a moving Dirichlet boundary condition, i.e. mirror spacetime, using two inertial Unruh-DeWitt detectors. We consider a variety of non-trivial trajectories for these accelerating mirrors and find (1) an entanglement inhibition phenomenon similar to that recently seen for black holes, as well as (2) trajectory-independent entanglement enhancement in some regimes. We show that the qualitative result obtained is the same for both linear and derivative couplings of the detector with the field.

Finely Split Phase Transitions of Rotating and Accelerating Black Holes

We investigate the thermodynamic phase behaviour of rotating and slowly accelerating AdS black holes. While we find some similarities with the non-rotating charged counterparts, such as the peculiar phenomena of "snapping swallow tails" we also find subtle but significant distinctions that can be attributed to a qualitatively modified parameter space of the solution. Consequently the zeroth order phase transition now occurs over a range of pressures, mini-entropic black holes no longer exist in the regime of slow acceleration, and the "no black hole region" emerges continuously---from a zero temperature extremal black hole. The formerly equal transition pressure now experiences a fine splitting, as the emergence of a no black hole region and the zeroth-order phase transition appear at different pressures, different also from the termination pressure of the first order phase transition. This has the further effect of admitting reentrant phase transitions that can be achieved in two ways, either by varying the temperature at fixed pressure or varying the pressure at fixed temperature.

Snapping swallowtails in accelerating black hole thermodynamics

The thermodynamic behaviour of a charged and accelerating AdS black hole is studied in the context of extended phase space with variable cosmological constant. When compared to the charged AdS black hole without acceleration, a remarkable new feature of `snapping swallowtails' appears. Namely, for any black hole with charge $Q$ and any string tension $μ$ causing the acceleration of the black hole, there exists a transition pressure $P_t=3μ^2/(8πQ^2)$ at which the standard swallowtail `snaps', causing the branch of low temperature black holes to completely disappear, leading to a pressure induced zeroth order phase transition between small and large black holes. For intermediate values of the string tension, we also observe a reentrant phase transition, as the small black hole changes to a large one and then back to small, as the pressure decreases, crossing the coexistence line of the two phases several times. We also find a new class of `mini-entropic' black holes, whose isoperimetric ratio becomes unbounded in a certain region of parameter space.

An Optomechanical Quantum Cavendish Experiment

An open question in experimental physics is the characterization of gravitational effects in quantum regimes. We propose an experimental set-up that uses well-tested techniques in cavity optomechanics to observe the effects of the gravitational interaction between two micro-mechanical oscillators on the interference of the cavity photons through the shifts in the visibility of interfering photons. The gravitational coupling leads to a shift in the period and magnitude of the visibility whose observability is within reach of current technology. We discuss the feasibility of the set-up as well as the effects on entanglement due to gravitational interaction.

Witnessing irreducible dimension

The Hilbert space dimension of a quantum system is the most basic quantifier of its information content. Lower bounds on the dimension can be certified in a device-independent way, based only on observed statistics. We highlight that some such "dimension witnesses" capture only the presence of systems of some dimension, which in a sense is trivial, not the capacity of performing information processing on them, which is the point of experimental efforts to control high-dimensional systems. In order to capture this aspect, we introduce the notion of irreducible dimension of a quantum behaviour. This dimension can be certified, and we provide a witness for irreducible dimension four.
