Tri-Info: Generalizable, Interpretable Failure Prediction for VLA Models via Information Theory

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models are increasingly deployed across diverse tasks, yet they remain black boxes whose physical interactions can cause irreversible harm, making generalizable and interpretable failure detection essential. We observe that successful and failed rollouts carry systematically different information-theoretic signatures. Building on this, we formalize VLA control as a closed-loop information pipeline and derive the Triple Information-theoretic (Tri-Info) signals that capture whether actions remain diverse, temporally consistent, and coupled to state transitions. Across six VLA models and three benchmark environments, Tri-Info matches the strongest baselines in-domain. Moreover, Tri-Info transfers across architectures, environments, and the sim-to-real gap without retraining, reaching 83\% accuracy on real-world tasks where prior detectors collapse to chance. This establishes Tri-Info as a simple yet powerful method that not only detects failures with strong cross-domain generalization, but also delivers interpretable diagnostics of the underlying failure modes.

History-Aware and Dynamic Client Contribution in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) is a collaborative machine learning (ML) approach, where multiple clients participate in training an ML model without exposing their private data. Fair and accurate assessment of client contributions facilitates incentive allocation in FL and encourages diverse clients to participate in a unified model training. Existing methods for contribution assessment adopts a co-operative game-theoretic concept, called Shapley value, but under restricted assumptions, e.g., all clients' participating in all epochs or at least in one epoch of FL. We propose a history-aware client contribution assessment framework, called FLContrib, where client-participation is dynamic, i.e., a subset of clients participates in each epoch. The theoretical underpinning of FLContrib is based on the Markovian training process of FL. Under this setting, we directly apply the linearity property of Shapley value and compute a historical timeline of client contributions. Considering the possibility of a limited computational budget, we propose a two-sided fairness criteria to schedule Shapley value computation in a subset of epochs. Empirically, FLContrib is efficient and consistently accurate in estimating contribution across multiple utility functions. As a practical application, we apply FLContrib to detect dishonest clients in FL based on historical Shaplee values.

Spoof Face Detection Via Semi-Supervised Adversarial Training

Face spoofing causes severe security threats in face recognition systems. Previous anti-spoofing works focused on supervised techniques, typically with either binary or auxiliary supervision. Most of them suffer from limited robustness and generalization, especially in the cross-dataset setting. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised adversarial learning framework for spoof face detection, which largely relaxes the supervision condition. To capture the underlying structure of live faces data in latent representation space, we propose to train the live face data only, with a convolutional Encoder-Decoder network acting as a Generator. Meanwhile, we add a second convolutional network serving as a Discriminator. The generator and discriminator are trained by competing with each other while collaborating to understand the underlying concept in the normal class(live faces). Since the spoof face detection is video based (i.e., temporal information), we intuitively take the optical flow maps converted from consecutive video frames as input. Our approach is free of the spoof faces, thus being robust and general to different types of spoof, even unknown spoof. Extensive experiments on intra- and cross-dataset tests show that our semi-supervised method achieves better or comparable results to state-of-the-art supervised techniques.

Novelty Detection via Non-Adversarial Generative Network

One-class novelty detection is the process of determining if a query example differs from the training examples (the target class). Most of previous strategies attempt to learn the real characteristics of target sample by using generative adversarial networks (GANs) methods. However, the training process of GANs remains challenging, suffering from instability issues such as mode collapse and vanishing gradients. In this paper, by adopting non-adversarial generative networks, a novel decoder-encoder framework is proposed for novelty detection task, insteading of classical encoder-decoder style. Under the non-adversarial framework, both latent space and image reconstruction space are jointly optimized, leading to a more stable training process with super fast convergence and lower training losses. During inference, inspired by cycleGAN, we design a new testing scheme to conduct image reconstruction, which is the reverse way of training sequence. Experiments show that our model has the clear superiority over cutting-edge novelty detectors and achieves the state-of-the-art results on the datasets.

Time-resolved measure technique for electron beam envelope basing on synchronous framing and streaking principle

The time-resolved electron beam envelope parameters including sectional distribution and position are important and necessary for the study of beam transmission characteristics in the magnetic field and verifying the magnetic field setup rationality. One kind of high time-resolved beam envelope measurement system has developed recently. It is mainly constituted of high framing camera and streak camera. It can obtain 3 panoramic images of the beam and the time continuous information of the given beam cross section at one time. The recently obtained data has proved that several fast vibration of beam envelope along the diameter direction occur during the rising edge and the falling edge of the electron beam. The vibration period is about several nanoseconds. The effect of magnetic field on the electron beam is also observed and verified. The beam debug experiments have proved that the existing beam transmission design is reasonable and viable. The beam envelope measurement system will establish a good foundation for beam physics research.
