OpenRIS: Democratizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces for real-world wireless enhancements

Wireless enhancement is critical for next-generation mobile communication systems to realize seamless connectivity, yet traditional network expansion strategies are becoming economically unsustainable. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) provide a promising alternative by improving signal utilization. However, high hardware and deployment costs of advanced RISs limit their large-scale application. Here, we democratize this technology with OpenRIS, an open-source and low-cost platform composed of Lego-like meta-bricks. With digital-twin assistance, these meta-bricks can be flexibly assembled into arbitrary shapes to achieve customized, mass-deployable wireless enhancement without extra power. Experiments and full-wave simulations verify that the discretized OpenRIS achieves consistent performance with the continuous RIS. We further develop a dual-user wireless transmission system and a three-dimensional coverage measurement system to showcase the versatile applicability of OpenRIS in wireless enhancements. As a plug-and-play solution, OpenRIS accelerates the translation of RIS theory into practice and is poised to integrate into infrastructure, reshaping the future wireless world as steel and concrete shape modern cities.

Propagation-Consistent Wireless Environment Digital Twin Construction Under Sparse Measurements

Digital twins (DTs) are promising for wireless deployment, optimization, and data generation, but building a propagation-faithful twin from sparse real measurements remains difficult. This paper proposes a wireless environment digital twin (WEDT) construction paradigm that evolves a reconstructed geometric DT into a propagation-consistent wireless environment representation through calibration of a scene-level electromagnetic (EM) property field. Instead of directly fitting link-specific channel responses, the proposed paradigm first constructs a geometry-prior Bayesian channel map (BCM) to convert sparse position-labeled channel state information (CSI) into dense probabilistic supervision with uncertainty estimates. It then embeds the learnable EM property field into differentiable ray tracing (RT) based channel computation, thereby enabling calibration through an explicit propagation chain. Experiments in both public and real-world scenes show that WEDT achieves accurate channel prediction, generalizes to unseen transceiver topologies, and remains effective across different sampling conditions. WEDT also offers utility for material-related environment sensing, more reliable physical-layer planning, and higher-quality synthetic data generation for wireless AI. These results demonstrate the value of the proposed paradigm for propagation-consistent WEDT construction and related wireless applications.

Planar Diffractive Neural Networks Empowered Communications: A Spatial Modulation Scheme

Diffractive neural networks, where signal processing is embedded into wave propagation, promise light-speed and energy-efficient computation. However, existing three-dimensional structures, such as stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs), face critical challenges in implementation and integration. In contrast, this work pioneers planar diffractive neural networks (PDNNs) empowered communications, a novel architecture that performs signal processing as signals propagate through artificially designed planar circuits. To demonstrate the capability of PDNN, we propose a PDNN-based space-shift-keying (PDNN-SSK) communication system with a single radio-frequency (RF) chain and a maximum power detector. In this system, PDNNs are deployed at both the transmitter and receiver to jointly execute modulation, beamforming, and detection. We conduct theoretical analyses to provide the maximization condition of correct detection probability and derive the closed-form expression of the symbol error rate (SER) for the proposed system. To approach these theoretical benchmarks, the phase shift parameters of PDNNs are optimized using a surrogate model-based training approach, which effectively navigates the high-dimensional, non-convex optimization landscape. Extensive simulations verify the theoretical analysis framework and uncover fundamental design principles for the PDNN architecture, highlighting its potential to revolutionize RF front-ends by replacing conventional digital baseband modules with this integrable RF computing platform.

Pioneering Scalable Prototyping for Mid-Band XL-MIMO Systems: Design and Implementation

The mid-band frequency range, combined with extra large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO), is emerging as a key enabler for future communication systems. Thanks to the advent of new spectrum resources and degrees of freedom brought by the near-field propagation, the mid-band XL-MIMO system is expected to significantly enhance throughput and inherently support advanced functionalities such as integrated sensing and communication. Although theoretical studies have highlighted the benefits of mid-band XL-MIMO systems, the promised performance gains have yet to be validated in practical systems, posing a major challenge to the standardization. In this paper, preliminaries are first discussed, followed by an analysis of key challenges in constructing a real-time prototype system. Subsequently, the design and implementation of a real-time mid-band XL-MIMO prototype system are presented. Benefiting from the novel architecture, the proposed prototype system supports metrics aligned with standardization, including a bandwidth of 200 MHz, up to 1024 antenna elements, and up to 256 transceiver chains. Operating in time-division duplexing (TDD) mode, the prototype enables multiuser communication with support for up to 12 users, while retaining standard communication procedures. Built on software-defined radio (SDR) platforms, the system is programmable and allows for flexible deployment of advanced algorithms. Moreover, the modular architecture ensures high scalability, making the system adaptable to various configurations, including distributed deployments and decentralized signal processing. Experimental results with the proposed prototype system demonstrate real-time digital sample processing at 1167.85 Gbps, a peak data throughput of 15.81 Gbps for 12 users, and a maximal spectral efficiency approaching 80 bit/s/Hz.

Cylindrical RIS-Assisted Low-Complexity Transmission with Differentiated Visible Regions Exploiting Statistical CSI

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), recognized as a critical enabler for 6G networks, exhibit unprecedented capabilities in electromagnetic wave manipulation and wireless channel reconfiguration. By leveraging existing network infrastructure, RIS can cost-effectively create signal hotspots in low-altitude environments, ensuring robust connectivity to support the sustainable development of the low-altitude economy. However, achieving optimal phase shift design in multi-user scenarios faces two major challenges: the high-dimensional optimization introduced by massive RIS elements, and the persistent coupling of multi-user signals caused by shared RIS reflections. This paper utilize the visible region of an RIS arranged as the uniform cylindrical array (UCA) to reduce the complexity of phase shift design. Under the UCA architecture, RIS elements are categorized into two types: user-specific units and multi-user shared units. We then determine the optimal phase shifts by iteratively optimizing the phase shifts of multi-user shared units while directly configuring those of user-specific units based on a derived closed-form solution. The proposed approach significantly reduces optimization complexity, which is further corroborated by numerical simulation results demonstrating its substantial impact on both system performance and computational efficiency compared to the conventional RIS with uniform planar array.

Joint Spatial Division and Multiplexing with Customized Orthogonal Group Channels in Multi-RIS-Assisted Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) offer the unique capability to reshape the radio environment, thereby simplifying transmission schemes traditionally contingent on channel conditions. Joint spatial division and multiplexing (JSDM) emerges as a low-overhead transmission scheme for multi-user equipment (UE) scenarios, typically requiring complex matrix decomposition to achieve block-diagonalization of the effective channel matrix. In this study, we introduce an innovative JSDM design that leverages RISs to customize channels, thereby streamlining the overall procedures. By strategically positioning RISs at the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) directions of the base station (BS), we establish orthogonal line-of-sight links within the BS-RIS channel, enabling a straightforward pre-beamforming design. Based on UE grouping, we devise reflected beams of the RIS with optimized directions to mitigate inter-group interference in the RISs-UEs channel. An approximation of the channel cross-correlation coefficient is derived and serves as a foundation for the RISs-UEs association, further diminishing inter-group interference. Numerical results substantiate the efficacy of our RIS-customized JSDM in not only achieving effective channel block-diagonalization but also in significantly enhancing the sum spectral efficiency for multi-UE transmissions.

Baseband-Free End-to-End Communication System Based on Diffractive Deep Neural Network

Diffractive deep neural network (D2NN), also referred to as reconfigurable intelligent metasurface based deep neural networks (Rb-DNNs) or stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs) in the field of wireless communications, has emerged as a promising signal processing paradigm that enables computing-by-propagation. However, existing architectures are limited to implementing specific functions such as precoding and combining, while still relying on digital baseband modules for other essential tasks like modulation and detection. In this work, we propose a baseband-free end-to-end (BBF-E2E) wireless communication system where modulation, beamforming, and detection are jointly realized through the propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves. The BBF-E2E system employs D2NNs at both the transmitter and the receiver, forming an autoencoder architecture optimized as a complex-valued neural network. The transmission coefficients of each metasurface layer are trained using the mini-batch stochastic gradient descent method to minimize the cross-entropy loss. To reduce computational complexity during diffraction calculation, the angular spectrum method (ASM) is adopted in place of the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld formula. Extensive simulations demonstrate that BBF-E2E achieves robust symbol transmission under challenging channel conditions with significantly reduced hardware requirements. In particular, the proposed system matches the performance of a conventional multi-antenna system with 81 RF chains while requiring only a single RF chain and 1024 passive elements of metasurfaces. These results highlight the potential of wave-domain neural computing to replace digital baseband modules in future wireless transceivers.

RIS-Empowered Integrated Location Sensing and Communication with Superimposed Pilots

In addition to enhancing wireless communication coverage quality, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technique can also assist in positioning. In this work, we consider RIS-assisted superimposed pilot and data transmission without the assumption availability of prior channel state information and position information of mobile user equipments (UEs). To tackle this challenge, we design a frame structure of transmission protocol composed of several location coherence intervals, each with pure-pilot and data-pilot transmission durations. The former is used to estimate UE locations, while the latter is time-slotted, duration of which does not exceed the channel coherence time, where the data and pilot signals are transmitted simultaneously. We conduct the Fisher Information matrix (FIM) analysis and derive \text {Cram\'er-Rao bound} (CRB) for the position estimation error. The inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) is adopted to obtain the estimation results of UE positions, which are then exploited for channel estimation. Furthermore, we derive the closed-form lower bound of the ergodic achievable rate of superimposed pilot (SP) transmission, which is used to optimize the phase profile of the RIS to maximize the achievable sum rate using the genetic algorithm. Finally, numerical results validate the accuracy of the UE position estimation using the IFFT algorithm and the superiority of the proposed SP scheme by comparison with the regular pilot scheme.

Intelligent Adaptive Metasurface in Complex Wireless Environments

The programmable metasurface is regarded as one of the most promising transformative technologies for next-generation wireless system applications. Due to the lack of effective perception ability of the external electromagnetic environment, there are numerous challenges in the intelligent regulation of wireless channels, and it still relies on external sensors to reshape electromagnetic environment as desired. To address that problem, we propose an adaptive metasurface (AMS) which integrates the capabilities of acquiring wireless environment information and manipulating reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves in a programmable manner. The proposed design endows the metasurfaces with excellent capabilities to sense the complex electromagnetic field distributions around them and then dynamically manipulate the waves and signals in real time under the guidance of the sensed information, eliminating the need for prior knowledge or external inputs about the wireless environment. For verification, a prototype of the proposed AMS is constructed, and its dual capabilities of sensing and manipulation are experimentally validated. Additionally, different integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) scenarios with and without the aid of the AMS are established. The effectiveness of the AMS in enhancing communication quality is well demonstrated in complex electromagnetic environments, highlighting its beneficial application potential in future wireless systems.

Multi-modal Iterative and Deep Fusion Frameworks for Enhanced Passive DOA Sensing via a Green Massive H2AD MIMO Receiver

Most existing DOA estimation methods assume ideal source incident angles with minimal noise. Moreover, directly using pre-estimated angles to calculate weighted coefficients can lead to performance loss. Thus, a green multi-modal (MM) fusion DOA framework is proposed to realize a more practical, low-cost and high time-efficiency DOA estimation for a H$^2$AD array. Firstly, two more efficient clustering methods, global maximum cos\_similarity clustering (GMaxCS) and global minimum distance clustering (GMinD), are presented to infer more precise true solutions from the candidate solution sets. Based on this, an iteration weighted fusion (IWF)-based method is introduced to iteratively update weighted fusion coefficients and the clustering center of the true solution classes by using the estimated values. Particularly, the coarse DOA calculated by fully digital (FD) subarray, serves as the initial cluster center. The above process yields two methods called MM-IWF-GMaxCS and MM-IWF-GMinD. To further provide a higher-accuracy DOA estimation, a fusion network (fusionNet) is proposed to aggregate the inferred two-part true angles and thus generates two effective approaches called MM-fusionNet-GMaxCS and MM-fusionNet-GMinD. The simulation outcomes show the proposed four approaches can achieve the ideal DOA performance and the CRLB. Meanwhile, proposed MM-fusionNet-GMaxCS and MM-fusionNet-GMinD exhibit superior DOA performance compared to MM-IWF-GMaxCS and MM-IWF-GMinD, especially in extremely-low SNR range.

Rotatable Block-Controlled RIS: Bridging the Performance Gap to Element-Controlled Systems

The passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) requires numerous elements to achieve adequate array gain, which linearly increases power consumption (PC) with the number of reflection phases. To address this, this letter introduces a rotatable block-controlled RIS (BC-RIS) that preserves spectral efficiency (SE) while reducing power costs. Unlike the element-controlled RIS (EC-RIS), which necessitates independent phase control for each element, the BC-RIS uses a single phase control circuit for each block, substantially lowering power requirements. In the maximum ratio transmission, by customizing specular reflection channels through the rotation of blocks and coherently superimposing signals with optimized reflection phase of blocks, the BC-RIS achieves the same averaged SE as the EC-RIS. To counteract the added power demands from rotation, influenced by block size, we have developed a segmentation scheme to minimize overall PC. Furthermore, constraints for rotation power-related parameters have been established to enhance the energy efficiency of the BC-RIS compared to the EC-RIS. Numerical results confirm that this approach significantly improves energy efficiency while maintaining performance.

Fourier Transform-based Wavenumber Domain 3D Imaging in RIS-aided Communication Systems

Radio imaging is rapidly gaining prominence in the design of future communication systems, with the potential to utilize reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) as imaging apertures. Although the sparsity of targets in three-dimensional (3D) space has led most research to adopt compressed sensing (CS)-based imaging algorithms, these often require substantial computational and memory burdens. Drawing inspiration from conventional Fourier transform (FT)-based imaging methods, our research seeks to accelerate radio imaging in RIS-aided communication systems. To begin, we introduce a two-stage wavenumber domain 3D imaging technique: first, we modify RIS phase shifts to recover the equivalent channel response from the user equipment to the RIS array, subsequently employing traditional FT-based wavenumber domain methods to produce target images. We also determine the diffraction resolution limits of the system through k-space analysis, taking into account factors including system bandwidth, transmission direction, operating frequency, and the angle subtended by the RIS. Addressing the challenge of limited pilots in communication systems, we unveil an innovative algorithm that merges the strengths of both FT- and CS-based techniques by substituting the expansive sensing matrix with FT-based operators. Our simulation outcomes confirm that our proposed FT-based methods achieve high-quality images while demanding few time, memory, and communication resources.

Measurement-Based Small-Scale Channel Model for Sub-6 GHz RIS-Assisted Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have attracted increasing interest from both academia and industry, thanks to their unique features on controlling electromagnetic (EM) waves. Although theoretical models for RIS-empowered communications have covered a variety of applications, yet, very few papers have investigated the modeling of real propagation characteristics. In this paper, we fill this gap by providing an empirical statistical channel model to describe the small-scale channel variations for an RIS-assisted broadband system at 2.6 GHz. Based on real channel measurements in outdoor, indoor and outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) environments, we compare and analyze the global, inter-cluster and intra-cluster parameters. Measurement results indicate that the deployment of an RIS with proper phase configurations can significantly improve the channel quality by enhancing the $K$-factor and reducing the time dispersion. The small-scale fading is well characterized by the proposed statistical model and the empirical channel parameters. These results are essential for the design of emerging RIS-assisted wireless systems for future applications.

Time-Domain Channel Measurements and Small-Scale Fading Characterization for RIS-Assisted Wireless Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have attracted extensive attention from industry and academia. In RIS-assisted wireless communication systems, practical channel measurements and modeling serve as the foundation for system design, network optimization, and performance evaluation. In this paper, a RIS time-domain channel measurement system, based on a software defined radio platform, is developed for the first time to investigate the small-scale fading characteristics of RIS-assisted channels. We present RIS channel measurements in corridor and laboratory scenarios and compare the power delay profile of the channel without RIS, with RIS specular reflection, and with RIS intelligent reflection. The multipath component parameters and cluster parameters based on the Saleh-Valenzuela model are extracted. We find that the power delay profiles (PDPs) of the RIS-assisted channel fit the power-law decay model better than the common exponential decay model and approximate the law of square decay. Through intelligent reflection, the RIS can decrease the delay and concentrate the energy of the virtual line-of-sight (VLoS) path, thereby reducing the delay spread and mitigating multipath fading. Furthermore, the cluster characteristics of RIS-assisted channels are highly dependent on the measurement environment. In the laboratory scenario, a single cluster dominated by the VLoS path with smooth envelope is observed. On the other hand, in the corridor scenario, some additional clusters introduced by the RIS reflection are created.

RIS-Assisted Wireless Link Signatures for Specific Emitter Identification

The physical layer authentication (PLA) is a promising technology which can enhance the access security of a massive number of devices in the near future. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted PLA system, in which the legitimate transmitter can customize the channel fingerprints during PLA by controlling the ON-OFF state of the RIS. Without loss of generality, we use the received signal strength (RSS) based spoofing detection approach to analyze the feasibility of the proposed architecture. Specifically, based on the RSS, we derive the statistical properties of PLA and give some interesting insights, which showcase that the RIS-assisted PLA is theoretically feasible. Then, we derive the optimal detection threshold to maximize the performance in the context of the presented performance metrics. Next, the actual feasibility of the proposed system is verified via proof-of-concept experiments on a RIS-assisted PLA prototype platform. The experiment results show that there are 3.5% and 76% performance improvements when the transmission sources are at different locations and at the same location, respectively.

Joint Localization and Environment Sensing by Harnessing NLOS Components in RIS-aided mmWave Communication Systems

This study explores the use of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) components in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems for joint localization and environment sensing. The radar cross section (RCS) of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is calculated to develop a general path gain model for RISs and traditional scatterers. The results show that RISs have a greater potential to assist in localization due to their ability to maintain high RCSs and create strong NLOS links. A one-stage linear weighted least squares estimator is proposed to simultaneously determine user equipment (UE) locations, velocities, and scatterer (or RIS) locations using line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS paths. The estimator supports environment sensing and UE localization even using only NLOS paths. A second-stage estimator is also introduced to improve environment sensing accuracy by considering the nonlinear relationship between UE and scatterer locations. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimators in rich scattering environments and the benefits of using NLOS paths for improving UE location accuracy and assisting in environment sensing. The effects of RIS number, size, and deployment on localization performance are also analyzed.

Multi-Scenario Broadband Channel Measurement and Modeling for Sub-6 GHz RIS-Assisted Wireless Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-empowered communication, has been considered widely as one of the revolutionary technologies for next generation networks. However, due to the novel propagation characteristics of RISs, underlying RIS channel modeling and measurement research is still in its infancy and not fully investigated. In this paper, we conduct multi-scenario broadband channel measurements and modeling for RIS-assisted communications at the sub-6 GHz band. The measurements are carried out in three scenarios covering outdoor, indoor, and outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) environments, which suffer from non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation inherently. Three propagation modes including intelligent reflection with RIS, specular reflection with RIS and the mode without RIS, are taken into account in each scenario. In addition, considering the cascaded characteristics of RIS-assisted channel by nature, two modified empirical models including floating-intercept (FI) and close-in (CI) are proposed, which cover distance and angle domains. The measurement results rooted in 2096 channel acquisitions verify the prediction accuracy of these proposed models. Moreover, the propagation characteristics for RIS-assisted channels, including path loss (PL) gain, PL exponent, spatial consistency, time dispersion, frequency stationarity, etc., are compared and analyzed comprehensively. These channel measurement and modeling results may lay the groundwork for future applications of RIS-assisted communication systems in practice.
