Machine learning of phase transitions in the percolation and XY models

In this paper, we apply machine learning methods to study phase transitions in certain statistical mechanical models on the two dimensional lattices, whose transitions involve non-local or topological properties, including site and bond percolations, the XY model and the generalized XY model. We find that using just one hidden layer in a fully-connected neural network, the percolation transition can be learned and the data collapse by using the average output layer gives correct estimate of the critical exponent $ν$. We also study the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, which involves binding and unbinding of topological defects---vortices and anti-vortices, in the classical XY model. The generalized XY model contains richer phases, such as the nematic phase, the paramagnetic and the quasi-long-range ferromagnetic phases, and we also apply machine learning method to it. We obtain a consistent phase diagram from the network trained with only data along the temperature axis at two particular parameter $Δ$ values, where $Δ$ is the relative weight of pure XY coupling. Besides using the spin configurations (either angles or spin components) as the input information in a convolutional neural network, we devise a feature engineering approach using the histograms of the spin orientations in order to train the network to learn the three phases in the generalized XY model and demonstrate that it indeed works. The trained network by using system size $L\times L$ can be used to the phase diagram for other sizes ($L'\times L'$, where $L'\ne L$) without any further training.

Ground State Properties of the One-Dimensional Unconstrained Pseudo-Anyon Hubbard Model

We study the (pseudo-) anyon Hubbard model on a one-dimensional lattice without the presence of a three-body hardcore constraint. In particular, for the pseudo-fermion limit of a large statistical angle $θ\approxπ$, we observe a wealth of exotic properties including {a first order transition} between different superfluid phases and a {two-component} partially paired phase for large fillings without need of an additional three-body hardcore constraint. In this limit, we analyze the effect of an induced hardcore constraint, which leads to the stabilization of superfluid {ground states} for vanishing or even small attractive on-site interactions. For finite statistical angles, we study the unconventional broken-symmetry superfluid peaked at a finite momentum, resulting in an interesting beat phenomenon of single particle correlation functions. We show how some features of various ground state phases, including an analog of the partially paired phase in the pseudo-fermion limit, may be reproduced in a naive mean field frame.

Beats, broken-symmetry superfluid on a one dimensional anyon Hubbard model

By using the density matrix renormalization group and mean field methods, the anyon Hubbard model is studied systematically on a one dimensional lattice. The model can be expressed as a Bose-Hubbard model with a density-dependent-phase term. When the phase angle is $θ=0$ or $θ=π$, the model will be equivalent to boson and pseudo fermion models, respectively. In the mean field frame, we find a broken-symmetry superfluid (BSF), in which the $b^{\dagger}(b)$ operators on the nearest neighborhood sites have exactly opposite directions and behave like a directed oscillation pattern. By the density matrix reorganization group method, in the broken-symmetry superfluid, both the real and imaginary parts of the correlation $b^{\dagger}_ib_{i+r}$ behave according to a {\it beat phenomenon} with $0<θ<π$ in the form $C_0e^{i k r}(-1)^{r}$ or behave like waves with different wavelengths in the form $C_0e^{i k r}$. The distributions of the broken-symmetry superfluid phase and other phases are shown in the phase diagrams with different values of $θ$ and the direct phase transition between the two types of superfluid is observed. The beats phenomenon is explained by double peaks of momentum distribution with two wave numbers ${k}_1$ and ${k}_2$ satisfying the condition $\frac{{k}_1-{k}_2}{{k}_1+{k}_2}<\frac{1}{3}$, which are expected to be observed in the optical experiments.

Percolation of the Site Random-Cluster Model by Monte Carlo Method

Herein, we propose a site random cluster model by introducing an additional cluster weight in the partition function of the traditional site percolation. To simulate the model on a square lattice, we combine the color-assignation and the Swendsen-Wang methods together to design a highly efficient cluster algorithm with a small critical slowing-down phenomenon. To verify whether or not it is consistent with the bond random cluster model, we measure several quantities such as the wrapping probability $R_e$, the percolation strength $P_\infty$, and the magnetic susceptibility per site $χ_p$ as well as two exponents such as the thermal exponent $y_t$ and the fractal dimension $y_h$ of the largest cluster. We find that for different exponents of cluster weight q=1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4, the numerical estimation of the exponents $y_t$ and $y_h$ are consistent with the theoretical values. The universalities of the site random cluster model and the bond random cluster model are completely identical. For larger values of $q$, we find obvious signatures of the first-order percolation transition by the histograms and the hysteresis loops of the percolation strength and the energy per site. Our results are helpful for the understanding of the percolation of traditional statistical models.

Trimer superfluid and supersolid on two-dimensional optical lattices

By the photoassociation method, the trimer superfluid phase disappears in the one dimensional state-dependent optical lattice if the ratio of the three-body interaction $W$ to the trimer tunneling $J$is kept at $W/J=12$ [Phys Rev A. {\bf 90}, 033622(2014)]. To search for a trimer superfluid and trimer supersolid, we load the cold atom into two-dimensional lattices, whose coordinate number $z$ and kinetic energy $-zJ$ are respectively larger and lower than those of a one dimensional lattice. Herein, we study the Bose-Hubbard model, which has an additional trimer tunneling term, a three-body interaction and a next-nearest repulsion. The on-site trimer and trimer superfluid exist if the on-site two-body repulsion and three-body repulsion are smaller than some thresholds. With atom-tunneling terms, the phase transitions from trimer superfluid phase to both atom superfluid and atom supersolid phases are first order. With $W/J=12$, in a one dimensional lattice, the trimer superfluid phase does not exist at all. In contrast, the trimer superfluid phase, exists in the lower density regions $0 \textless ρ\textless2$ on the square lattice if $J$ is not very large. The trimer superfluid phase emerges in a wider range $0 \textless ρ\textless3$ in the triangular lattice, or in the cubic lattice ($z=6$). When the three-body interaction is turned on, a trimer supersolid phase emerges due to the classical degeneracy between the quasi trimer solid and the trimer solid being broken by the quantum fluctuation. The phase transitions from the trimer supersolid phase to quasi trimer solid are first order and the phase transition from the trimer supersolid phase to trimer solid is continuous. Our results, obtained by mean-field and quantum Monte Carlo methods, will be helpful in realizing the trimer superfluid and supersolid by cold atom experiments.

Trimer superfluid induced by photoassocation on the state-dependent optical lattice

We use the mean-field method, the Quantum Monte-carlo method and the Density matrix renormalization group method to study the trimer superfluid phase and the quantum phase diagram of the Bose-Hubbard model in an optical lattice, with explicit trimer tunneling term. Theoretically, we derive the explicit trimer hopping terms, such as $a_i^{3\dagger}a_j^3$, by the Schrieffer-Wolf transformation. In practice, the trimer super\-fluid described by these terms is driven by photoassociation. The phase transition between the trimer super\-fluid phase and other phases are also studied. Without the on-site interaction, the phase transition between the trimer superfluid phase and the Mott Insulator phase is continuous. Turning on the on-site interaction, the phase transitions are first order with Mott insulators of atom filling $1$ and $2$. With nonzero atom tunneling, the phase transition is first order from the atom superfluid to the trimer superfluid. In the trimer superfluid phase, the win\-ding numbers can be divided by three without any remainders. In the atom superfluid and pair superfluid, the vorticities are $1$ and $1/2$, respectively. However, the vorticity is $1/3$ for the trimer superfluid. The power law decay exponents is $1/2$ for the non diagonal correlation $a_i^{\dagger 3} a_j^{3}$, i.e. the same as the exponent of the correlation $a_i^{\dagger}a_j$ in hardcore bosons. The density dependent atom-tunneling term $n_i^2a_i^{\dagger}a_j$ and pair tunneling term $n_ia_i^{\dagger2}a_j^2$ are also studied. With these terms, the phase transition from the empty phase to atom superfluid is first order and different from the cases without the density dependent terms. The ef\-fects of temperature are studied. Our results will be helpful in realizing the trimer superfluid by a cold atom experiment.

Critical properties of the Hintermann-Merlini model

Many critical properties of the Hintermann-Merlini model are known exactly through the mapping to the eight-vertex model. Wu [J. Phys. C {\bf 8}, 2262 (1975)] calculated the spontaneous magnetizations of the model on two sublattices by relating them to the conjectured spontaneous magnetization and polarization of the eight-vertex model, respectively. The latter conjecture remains unproved. In this paper, we numerically study the critical properties of the model by means of a finite-size scaling analysis based on transfer matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. All analytic predictions for the model are confirmed by our numerical results. The central charge $c=1$ is found for the critical manifold investigated. In addition, some unpredicted geometry properties of the model are studied. Fractal dimensions of the largest Ising clusters on two sublattices are determined. The fractal dimension of the largest Ising cluster on the sublattice A takes fixed value $D_{\rm a}=1.888(2)$, while that for sublattice B varies continuously with the parameters of the model.

Extended Bose-Hubbard model with pair hopping on the triangular lattice

We study systematically an extended Bose-Hubbard model on the triangular lattice by means of a meanfield method based on the Gutzwiller ansatz. Pair hopping terms are explicitly included and a three-body constraint is applied. The ground-state phase diagram and a variety of quantum phase transitions are investigated in great detail. In particular, we show the existence and stability of the pair supersolid phase.

Pair supersolid of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with atom-pair hopping on the triangular Lattice

We systematically study an extended Bose-Hubbard model with atom hopping and atom-pair hopping in the presence of a three-body constraint on the triangular lattice. By means of large-scale Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, the ground-state phase diagram are studied. We find a continuous transition between the atomic superfluid phase and the pair superfluid when the ratio of the atomic hopping and the atom-pair hopping is adapted. We then focus on the interplay among the atom-pair hopping, the on-site repulsion and the nearest-neighbor repulsion. With on-site repulsion present, we observe first order transitions between the Mott Insulators and pair superfluid driven by the pair hopping. With the nearest-neighbor repulsion turning on, three typical solid phases with 2/3, 1 and 4/3-filling emerge at small atom-pair hopping region. A stable pair supersolid phase is found at small on-site repulsion. This is due to the three-body constraint and the pair hopping, which essentially make the model a quasi hardcore boson system. Thus the pair supersolid state emerges basing on the order-by-disorder mechanism, by which hardcore bosons avoid classical frustration on the triangular lattice. The transition between the pair supersolid and the pair superfluid is first order, except for the particle-hole symmetric point. We compare the results with those obtained by means of mean-field analysis.

Hardcore bosons on the dual of the bowtie lattice

We study the zero temperature phase diagram of hardcore bosons on the dual of the bowtie lattice. Two types of striped diagonal long-range order (striped order I and striped order II) are discussed. A state with type-II striped order and superfluidity is found, even without nearest-neighbor repulsion. The emergence of such a state is due to the inhomogeneity and the anisotropy of the lattice structure. However, neither the translational symmetry nor the symmetry between sublattices of the original lattice is broken. In this paper, we restrict a 'solid state' of lattice bosons as a diagonal long-range ordered state breaking either the translational symmetry of the original lattice or the symmetry of different sublattices. We thus name such a phase a striped superfluid phase (SSF). In the presence of a nearest-neighbor repulsion, we find two striped charge density wave phases(SCDW I and II) with boson density $ρ=1/2$ (with striped order I) and $ρ=2/3$ (with striped order II) respectively, when the hopping amplitude is small compared with the repulsion. The SCDW I state is a solid, in which the translational symmetry of the original lattice is broken. We observe a rather special first-order phase transition showing an interesting multi-loop hysteresis phenomenon between the two SCDW phases when the hopping term is small enough. This can be accounted for by the special degeneracy of the ground states near the classical limit. The SSF re-appears outside the two SCDW phases. The transition between the SCDW I and SSF phases is first order, while the transition between SCDW II and SSF phases is continuous. We find that the superfluid stiffness is anisotropic in the SSF states with and without repulsion. In the SSF with repulsion, the superfluid stiffness is subject to different types of anisotropy in the region near half filling and above 2/3-filling.

Effects of edge disorder in nano-scale antiferromagnetic clusters

We study the distribution of local magnetic susceptibilities in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg model on various random clusters, in order to determine whether effects of edge disorder could be detected in NMR experiments (through the line shape, as given by the distribution of local Knight shifts). Although the effects depend strongly on the nature of the edge and the cluster size, our results indicate that line widths broader than the average shift should be expected even in clusters as large as $\approx 1000$ lattice spacing in diameter. Experimental investigations of the NMR line width should give insights into the magnetic structure of the edges.
