Room-temperature ferroelectric p-wave magnet

P -wave magnets exhibit odd-parity spin polarization in momentum space while retaining zero net magnetization, offering a promising route toward nonrelativistic spintronics. Previously reported p-wave magnets based on combined time-reversal and lattice-translation symmetry, Tt, have thus far exhibited ordering temperatures below the liquid-nitrogen range. Here, we demonstrate a distinct route to a pristine p-wave magnetism that does not require T t symmetry, and instead is based on incommensurate spin-spiral order. Specifically, the cycloidal magnetic structure of the multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) intrinsically realizes p-wave magnetism coexisting with ferroelectric polarization at room temperature. Combining symmetry analysis, density-functional-theory calculations, and circular photogalvanic-effect (CPGE) measurements, we find a large nonrelativistic spin splitting of approximately 100 meV associated with the cycloidal order. The resulting p-wave spin polarization gives rise to a characteristic CPGE response whose sign can be reversibly switched by electrically controlling the cycloid chirality. Our results establish ferroelectric BiFeO3 as a room-temperature platform for electrically switchable p-wave magnetism and provide a route toward voltage-controlled spintronic devices based on parity-breaking magnetic order.

Persistent altermagnetism

Persistent spin textures with collinear spin polarization are promising platforms for spintronics applications. However, their typically relativistic spin-orbit origin leads to weak spin splittings and fragile spin coherence. Here, we demonstrate a previously overlooked class of robust collinear spin polarization protected by mirror symmetry in combination with a strong exchange-driven altermagnetic order, which persists even in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. By combining first-principles calculations with a systematic classification of spin and magnetic layer groups, we identify this phenomenon-termed persistent altermagnetic spin polarization (PASP)-to occur in 158 spin layer groups and in representative materials including metallic V$_2$Te$_2$O, insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$, and semiconducting VSI$_2$. Furthermore, we theoretically demonstrate that PASP is ferroelectrically switchable in VSI$_2$. Finally, we show that this PASP switching can lead to large changes in spin-filtering conductance in a model all-altermagnetic junction. Our results open the possibility of employing PASP in all-altermagnetic magnetic memory and spin-transistor devices and establish universal principles of altermagnetism in spin-orbit-coupled monolayers.

Spin and pair density waves in 2D altermagnetic metals

Altermagnetism, a recently proposed and experimentally confirmed class of magnetic order, features collinear compensated magnetism with unconventional d-, g-, or i-wave spin order. Here, we show that in a metallic 2D d-wave altermagnet with combined two-fold spin and four-fold lattice rotational symmetry $[C_2||C_4]$, secondary instabilities can arise. Using an unbiased functional renormalization group approach, we analyze the weak-coupling instabilities of a 2D Hubbard model with a preexisting altermagnetic order inspired by our ab initio electronic structure calculations of realistic material candidates from V$_2$X$_2$O (X = Te, Se) family. We identify two distinct spin density wave (SDW) states that break the underlying altermagnetic $[C_2||C_4]$ symmetry. Additionally, we find spin-fluctuation-induced instabilities leading to a singlet d-wave superconducting state and an unconventional commensurate pair density wave (PDW) state with extended s-wave and spin-triplet symmetry. We establish a general criterion for the unusual exchange statistics for these pair density waves and characterize their excitation spectrum, which exhibits Bogoliubov Fermi surfaces or nodal points depending on the gap size.

Dual topological insulator with mirror symmetry protected helical edge states

Dual topological insulators (DTIs) are simultaneously protected by time-reversal and crystal symmetries, representing advantageous alternatives to conventional topological insulators. By combining ab initio calculations and the $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ approach, here, we investigate the electronic band structure of a Na$_2$CdSn triatomic layer and derive a low-energy $4\times 4$ effective model consistent with all the symmetries of this material class. We obtain the effective Hamiltonian using the Löwdin perturbation theory, the folding-down technique, and the theory of invariants and determine its parameters by fitting our analytical dispersion relations to those of ab initio calculations. We then calculate the bulk topological invariants of the system and show that the Na$_2$CdSn triatomic layer is a giant-gap (hundreds of millielectronvolts) quasi-two-dimensional DTI characterized by both spin and mirror Chern numbers $-2$. In agreement with the bulk-boundary correspondence theorem, we find that a finite-width strip of Na$_2$CdSn possesses two pairs of counterpropagating helical edge states per interface. We obtain analytical expressions for the edge state energy dispersions and wave functions, which are shown to agree with our numerical calculations. Our work opens an avenue for further studies of Na$_2$CdSn as a potential DTI candidate with room-temperature applications in areas of technological interest, such as nanoelectronics and spintronics.

Anomalous Nernst effect in the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn$_5$Si$_3$

Investigating the off-diagonal components of the conductivity and thermoelectric tensor of materials hosting complex antiferromagnetic structures has become a viable method to reveal the effects of topology and chirality on the electronic transport in these systems. In this respect, Mn$_5$Si$_3$ is an interesting metallic compound that exhibits several antiferromagnetic phases below 100 K with different collinear and noncollinear arrangements of Mn magnetic moments. Previous investigations have shown that the transitions between the various phases give rise to large changes of the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we report measurements of the anomalous Nernst effect of Mn$_5$Si$_3$ single crystals. Below 25 K we observe a sign change of the zero-field Nernst signal with a concomitant decrease of the Hall signal and a gradual reduction of the remanent magnetization which we attribute to a subtle rearrangement of the magnetic moment configuration at low temperatures.

Observation of the anomalous Nernst effect in altermagnetic candidate Mn5Si3

The anomalous Nernst effect generates transverse voltage to the applied thermal gradient in magnetically ordered systems. The effect was previously considered excluded in compensated magnetic materials with collinear ordering. However, in the recently identified class of compensated magnetic materials, dubbed altermagnets, time-reversal symmetry breaking in the electronic band structure makes the presence of the anomalous Nernst effect possible despite the collinear spin arrangement. In this work, we investigate epitaxial Mn5Si3 thin films known to be an altermagnetic candidate. We show that the material manifests a sizable anomalous Nernst coefficient despite the small net magnetization of the films. The measured magnitudes of the anomalous Nernst coefficient reach a scale of microVolts per Kelvin. We support our magneto-thermoelectric measurements by density-functional theory calculations of the material's spin-split electronic structure, which allows for the finite Berry curvature in the reciprocal space. Furthermore, we present our calculations of the intrinsic Berry-curvature Nernst conductivity, which agree with our experimental observations.

Direct observation of altermagnetic band splitting in CrSb thin films

Altermagnetism represents an emergent collinear magnetic phase with compensated order and an unconventional alternating even-parity wave spin order in the non-relativistic band structure. We investigate directly this unconventional band splitting near the Fermi energy through spinintegrated soft X-ray angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimentally obtained angle-dependent photoemission intensity, acquired from epitaxial thin films of the predicted altermagnet CrSb, demonstrates robust agreement with the corresponding band structure calculations. In particular, we observe the distinctive splitting of an electronic band on a low-symmetry path in the Brilliouin zone that connects two points featuring symmetry-induced degeneracy. The measured large magnitude of the spin splitting of approximately 0.6 eV and the position of the band just below the Fermi energy underscores the signifcance of altermagnets for spintronics based on robust broken time reversal symmetry responses arising from exchange energy scales, akin to ferromagnets, while remaining insensitive to external magnetic fields and possessing THz dynamics, akin to antiferromagnets.

Geometrically induced reversion of Hall current in a topological insulator cavity

An electric charge near the surface of a topological insulator induces an image magnetic monopole. Here, we show that if the topological insulator surface has a negative curvature, namely in the case of a semispherical cavity, the induced Hall current reverses its rotation as the electric charge crosses the semisphere geometric focus. Such a reversion is shown to be equivalent of inverting the charge of the image magnetic monopole. We also discuss upon the case of a semicylindrical cavity, where Hall current reversion appears to be feasible of probing in realistic experiments.
