Perturbative expansion of N<8 Supergravity

We characterise the one-loop amplitudes for N=6 and N=4 supergravity in four dimensions. For N=6 we find that the one-loop n-point amplitudes can be expanded in terms of scalar box and triangle functions only. This simplification is consistent with a loop momentum power count of n-3, which we would interpret as being n+4 for gravity with a further -7 from the N=6 superalgebra. For N=4 we find that the amplitude is consistent with a loop momentum power count of n, which we would interpret as being n+4 for gravity with a further -4 from the N=4 superalgebra. Specifically the N=4 amplitudes contain non-cut-constructible rational terms.

Augmented Recursion For One-loop Amplitudes

We present a semi-recursive method for calculating the rational parts of one-loop amplitudes when recursion produces double poles. We illustrate this with the graviton scattering amplitude M^{1-loop}(1-, 2+, 3+, 4+, 5+).

Augmented Recursion For One-loop Gravity Amplitudes

We present a semi-recursive method for calculating the rational parts of one-loop gravity amplitudes which utilises axial gauge diagrams to determine the non-factorising pieces of the amplitude. This method is used to compute the one-loop amplitudes M(1-,2+,3+,4+,5+) and M(1-,2+,3+,4+,5+,6+).

The Unitarity Method using a Canonical Basis Approach

Various implementations of the Unitarity method have been developed to compute one-loop amplitudes in gauge theories. In this paper we present an implementation which uses canonical forms to generate the rational coefficients of the basis integral functions. As an example, we present the results for the N=1 contribution to seven gluon scattering in closed, rational, analytic form.

Approximate Universality of N=4 Super-Yang--Mills One-Loop Amplitudes

A study of the colour-ordered one-loop amplitudes in N=4 SYM reveals a surprising property: numerically, the amplitudes have an Approximately Universal form A^{1-loop}_n ~ A^{tree}_n \times U_n, where U_n is helicity independent. This form is exact if the amplitude is a MHV amplitude, but has an "error" which is typically less than 1% for the six, seven and eight gluon NMHV one-loop amplitudes.

Analytic Structure of Three-Mass Triangle Coefficients

``Three-mass triangles'' are a class of integral functions appearing in one-loop gauge theory amplitudes. We discuss how the complex analytic properties and singularity structures of these amplitudes can be combined with generalised unitarity techniques to produce compact expressions for three-mass triangle coefficients. We present formulae for the N=1 contributions to the n-point NMHV amplitude.

The No-Triangle Hypothesis for N=8 Supergravity

We study the perturbative expansion of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions from the viewpoint of the ``no-triangle'' hypothesis, which states that one-loop graviton amplitudes in N=8 supergravity only contain scalar box integral functions. Our computations constitute a direct proof at six-points and support the no-triangle conjecture for seven-point amplitudes and beyond.

Twistor Space Structure of the Box Coefficients of N=1 One-loop Amplitudes

We examine the coefficients of the box functions in N=1 supersymmetric one-loop amplitudes. We present the box coefficients for all six point N=1 amplitudes and certain all $n$ example coefficients. We find for ``next-to MHV'' amplitudes that these box coefficients have coplanar support in twistor space.

One-Loop Gluon Scattering Amplitudes in Theories with $N < 4$ Supersymmetries

Generalised unitarity techniques are used to calculate the coefficients of box and triangle integral functions of one-loop gluon scattering amplitudes in gauge theories with $N < 4$ supersymmetries. We show that the box coefficients in N=1 and N=0 theories inherit the same coplanar and collinear constraints as the corresponding N=4 coefficients. We use triple cuts to determine the coefficients of the triangle integral functions and present, as an example, the full expression for the one-loop amplitude $A^{N=1}(1^-,2^-,3^-,4^+,..,n^+)$.

MHV-Vertices for Gravity Amplitudes

We obtain a CSW-style formalism for calculating graviton scattering amplitudes and prove its validity through the use of a special type of BCFW-like parameter shift. The procedure is illustrated with explicit examples.

One-Loop NMHV Amplitudes involving Gluinos and Scalars in N=4 Gauge Theory

We use Supersymmetric Ward Identities and quadruple cuts to generate n-pt NMHV amplitudes involving gluinos and adjoint scalars from purely gluonic amplitudes. We present a set of factors that can be used to generate one-loop NMHV amplitudes involving gluinos or adjoint scalars in N=4 Super Yang-Mills from the corresponding purely gluonic amplitude.

Supersymmetric Ward Identities and NMHV Amplitudes involving Gluinos

We show how Supersymmetric Ward identities can be used to obtain amplitudes involving gluinos or adjoint scalars from purely gluonic amplitudes. We obtain results for all one-loop six-point NMHV amplitudes in $\NeqFour$ Super Yang-Mills theory which involve two gluinos or two scalar particles. More general cases are also discussed.

Cosmological Phase Transitions in a Brane World

In brane world scenarios the Friedmann equation is modified, resulting in an increased expansion at early times. This has important effects on cosmological phase transitions which we investigate, elucidating significant differences to the standard case. First order phase transitions require a higher nucleation rate to complete; baryogenesis and particle abundances could be suppressed. Topological defect evolution is also affected, though the current defect densities are largely unchanged. In particular, the increased expansion does not solve the usual monopole and domain wall problems.

Brane World Cosmology Without the Z_2 Symmetry

The Friedmann equation for a positive tension brane situated between two bulk spacetimes that posses the same 5D cosmological constant, but which does not posses a Z_2 symmetry of the metric itself is derived, and the possible effects of dropping the Z_2 symmetry on the expansion of our Universe are examined; cosmological constraints are discussed. The global solutions for the metric in the infinite extra dimension case are found and comparison with the symmetric case is made. We show that any brane world senario of this type must revert to a Z_2 symmetric form at late times, and hence rule out certain proposed scenarios.

Colliding Bubble Worlds

We consider a cosmological model in which our Universe is a spherically symmetric bubble wall in 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. We argue that the bubble on which we live will undergo collisions with other similar bubbles and estimate the spectrum of such collisions. The collision rate is found to be independent of the age of our Universe. Collisions with small bubbles provide an experimental signature of this scenario, while collisions with larger bubbles would be catastrophic.

The Fate of Cosmic String Zero Modes

Cosmic strings in realistic particle physics models have fermion zero modes in the string core. Such zero modes change the underlying cosmology; for example, the string can carry a current. We consider the stability of fermion zero modes to interactions with particles in the surrounding plasma. We also consider cosmological constraints on such theories, particulary those with a chiral fermion zero mode, such as arises in a class of supersymmetric models.

Cosmic String Current Stability

The stability of fermionic charge carriers on cosmic strings is considered. We show that neutral fermion currents in cosmic strings are always chiral or time-like, in contrast to the case of bosonic currents. The spectrum of bound states on an abelian SO(10) string is determined both before and after the electroweak phase transition. We determine the mass acquired by the zero mode at this transition. A range of charge carrier scattering processes are considered and corresponding decay rates calculated. Couplings between the carriers and the electroweak sector generate scattering from the plasma which can thermalise some currents. If the zero mode is isolated from the electroweak sector, then it survives. Current-current scattering is considered, but found to be unimportant in realistic settings where the string density is low.

The Dirac Sea Contribution To The Energy Of An Electroweak String

We present a systematic determination of the order hbar fermionic energy shift when an electroweak string is perturbed. We show that the combined effect of zero modes, bound states and continuum states is to lower the total fermionic ground state energy of the string when the Higgs instability of the string is excited. The effect of the Dirac sea is thus to destabilise the string. However, this effect can be offset by populating positive energy states. Fermions enhance the stability of an electroweak string with sufficiently populated fermionic bound states.
