On Projective Hoops: Loops in Hyperspace

We (re)derive the propagators and Feynman rules for the massless scalar and vector multiplets in N=2 Projective Superspace ('Projective Hyperspace'). With these, we are able to calculate both the divergent and finite parts of 2, 3 & 4-point functions at 1-loop for N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory (SYM) explicitly in Projective Hyperspace itself. We find that effectively only the coupling constant needs to be renormalized unlike in the N=1 case where an independent wavefunction renormalization is also required. This feature is similar to that of the background field gauge, even though we are using ordinary Fermi-Feynman gauge. The computation of 1-hoop beta-function is then straightforward and matches with the known result. We also show that it receives no 2-hoops contributions. All these calculations provide an alternative proof of the finiteness of N=4 SYM.

Supertwistor space for 6D maximal super Yang-Mills

6D maximal super Yang-Mills on-shell amplitudes are formulated in superspace using 6 dimensional twistors. The 3,4,5-point tree amplitudes are obtained by supersymmetrizing their bosonic counterparts and confirmed through the BCFW construction. In contrast to 4D this superspace is non-chiral, reflecting the fact that one cannot differentiate MHV from $\bar{\rm MHV}$ in 6D. Combined with unitarity methods, this superspace should be useful for the study of multi-loop D dimensional maximal super Yang-Mills and gravity amplitudes. Furthermore, the non-chiral nature gives a natural framework for an off-shell construction. We show this by matching our result with off-shell D=4 N=4 super Yang-Mills amplitudes, expressed in projective superspace.

Covariant propagator in AdS5 x S5 superspace

We give an explicit superspace propagator for the chiral scalar field strength of 10D IIB supergravity on an AdS5 x S5 background. Because this space is conformally flat, the propagator is very simple, almost identical to that of flat space. We also give an explicit expansion over the Kaluza-Klein modes of S5. The fact that the full propagator is so much simpler suggests that, as in 2D conformal field theory, AdS/CFT calculations would be simpler without a mode expansion.

Regularizing Cubic Open Neveu-Schwarz String Field Theory

After introducing non-minimal variables, the midpoint insertion of Y\bar Y in cubic open Neveu-Schwarz string field theory can be replaced with an operator N_ρdepending on a constant parameter ρ. As in cubic open superstring field theory using the pure spinor formalism, the operator N_ρis invertible and is equal to 1 up to a BRST-trivial quantity. So unlike the linearized equation of motion Y\bar Y QV=0 which requires truncation of the Hilbert space in order to imply QV=0, the linearized equation N_ρQV=0 directly implies QV=0.

Deriving Projective Hyperspace from Harmonic

We derive actions for projective N=2 superspace ("hyperspace") from those for harmonic hyperspace, including that for nonabelian Yang-Mills (a new result). The method uses Wick rotation of the sphere from complex conjugate coordinates to real, null ones, which can be treated as independent. The result can be considered "holographic" in that the dimension of the internal (R-symmetry) space is reduced from 2 to 1, by solving equations of motion or gauge conditions for dependence on the other coordinate. The auxiliary nature of the redundant dimension makes the hypergraph rules and evaluation almost identical.

First-quantized N=4 Yang-Mills

We present simple first-class-constraint actions and BRST operators for the 4D N=4 superparticle. Each generation of ghosts has 2 super-indices, like the coordinates. The constraints that define projective superspace close in a super Yang-Mills background due to the presence of a (non-central) U(1) generator in the algebra.

Worldgraph Approach to Yang-Mills Amplitudes from N=2 Spinning Particle

By coupling the N=2 spinning particle to background vector fields, we construct Yang-Mills amplitudes for trees and one loop. The vertex operators are derived through coupling the BRST charge; therefore background gauge invariance is manifest, and the Yang-Mills ghosts are automatically included in loop calculations by worldline ghosts. Inspired by string calculations, we extend the usual worldline approach to incorporate more "generalized" 1D manifolds. This new approach should be useful for constructing higher-point and higher-loop amplitudes.

Superconformal spaces and implications for superstrings

We clarify some properties of projective superspace by using a manifestly superconformal notation. In particular, we analyze the N=2 scalar multiplet in detail, including its action, and the propagator and its super-Schwinger parameters. The internal symmetry is taken to be noncompact (after Wick rotation), allowing boundary conditions that preserve it off shell. Generalization to N=4 suggests the coset superspace PSU(2,2|4)/OSp(4|4) for the AdS/CFT superstring.

Running anti-de Sitter radius from QCD-like strings

We consider renormalization effects for a bosonic QCD-like string, whose partons have $1/p^{2}$ propagators instead of Gaussian. Classically this model resembles (the bosonic part of) the projective light-cone (zero-radius) limit of a string on an AdS${}_5$ background, where Schwinger parameters give rise to the fifth dimension. Quantum effects generate dynamics for this dimension, producing an AdS${}_5$ background with a running radius. The projective light-cone is the high-energy limit: Holography is enforced dynamically.

On Semiclassical Limits of String States

We explore the relation between classical and quantum states in both open and closed (super)strings discussing the relevance of coherent states as a semiclassical approximation. For the closed string sector a gauge-fixing of the residual world-sheet rigid translation symmetry of the light-cone gauge is needed for the construction to be possible. The circular target-space loop example is worked out explicitly.

Worldline Green Functions for Arbitrary Feynman Diagrams

We propose a general method to obtain the scalar worldline Green function on an arbitrary 1D topological space, with which the first-quantized method of evaluating 1-loop Feynman diagrams can be generalized to calculate arbitrary ones. The electric analog of the worldline Green function problem is found and a compact expression for the worldline Green function is given, which has similar structure to the 2D bosonic Green function of the closed bosonic string.

Yang-Mills Gauge Conditions from Witten's Open String Field Theory

We construct the Zinn-Justin-Batalin-Vilkovisky action for tachyons and gauge bosons from Witten's 3-string vertex of the bosonic open string without gauge fixing. Through canonical transformations, we find the off-shell, local, gauge-covariant action up to 3-point terms, satisfying the usual field theory gauge transformations. Perturbatively, it can be extended to higher-point terms. It also gives a new gauge condition in field theory which corresponds to the Feynman-Siegel gauge on the world-sheet.

String interactions on the random lattice

We combine two partons on a random lattice as a vector state. In the ladder approximation, we find that such states have 1/p^2 propagators (after tuning the mass to vanish). We also construct some diagrams which are very similar to 3-string vertices in string field theory for the first oscillator mode. Attaching 3 such lattice states to these vertices, we get Yang-Mills and F^3 interactions up to 3-point as from bosonic string (field) theory. This gives another view of a gauge field as a bound state in a theory whose only fundamental fields are scalars.

Non-perturbative Gravity, Hagedorn Bounce & CMB

In hep-th/0508194 it was shown how non-perturbative corrections to gravity can resolve the big bang singularity, leading to a bouncing universe. Depending on the scale of the non-perturbative corrections, the temperature at the bounce may be close to or higher than the Hagedorn temperature. If matter is made up of strings, then massive string states will be excited near the bounce, and the bounce will occur inside (or at the onset of) the Hagedorn phase for string matter. As we discuss in this paper, in this case cosmological fluctuations can be generated via the string gas mechanism recently proposed in hep-th/0511140. In fact, the model discussed here demonstrates explicitly that it is possible to realize the assumptions made in hep-th/0511140 in the context of a concrete set of dynamical background equations. We also calculate the spectral tilt of thermodynamic stringy fluctuations generated in the Hagedorn regime in this bouncing universe scenario. Generally we find a scale-invariant spectrum with a red tilt which is very small but does not vanish.

Random lattice superstrings

We propose some new simplifying ingredients for Feynman diagrams that seem necessary for random lattice formulations of superstrings. In particular, half the fermionic variables appear only in particle loops (similarly to loop momenta), reducing the supersymmetry of the constituents of the Type IIB superstring to N=1, as expected from their interpretation in the 1/N expansion as super Yang-Mills.

Simpler Superstring Scattering

We give a new, manifestly spacetime-supersymmetric method for calculating superstring scattering amplitudes, using the ghost pyramid, that is simpler than all other known methods. No pictures nor non-vertex insertions are required other than the usual b and c ghosts of the bosonic string. We evaluate some tree and loop amplitudes as examples.

Bouncing Universes in String-inspired Gravity

We consider the effects on cosmology of higher-derivative modifications of (effective) gravity that make it asymptotically free without introducing ghosts. The weakening of gravity at short distances allows pressure to prevent the singularity, producing a solution with contraction preceding expansion.

Conquest of the ghost pyramid of the superstring

We give a new Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin operator for the superstring. It implies a quadratic gauge-fixed action, and a new gauge-invariant action with first-class constraints. The infinite pyramid of spinor ghosts appears in a simple way through ghost gamma matrices.
