Emergence of a Bandgap in Nano-Scale Graphite: A Computational and Experimental Study

Bandgaps in layered materials are critical for enabling functionalities such as tunable photodetection, efficient energy conversion, and nonlinear optical responses, which are essential for next-generation photonic and quantum devices. Gap engineering could form heterostructures with complementary materials like transition metal dichalcogenides or perovskites for multi-functional devices. Graphite, conventionally regarded as a gapless material, exhibits a bandgap of ~100 meV in nano-scale patterned highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), as revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and Raman measurements. Our state-of-the-art calculations, incorporating photoemission matrix element effects, predict this bandgap with remarkable accuracy and attribute it to mechanical distortions introduced during patterning. This work bridges theory and experiment, providing the direct evidence of a tunable bandgap in HOPG. Beyond its fundamental significance, this finding opens new possibilities for designing materials with tailored electronic properties, enabling advancements in terahertz devices and optoelectronics.

Solid/Liquid Phase Transition and Heat Engine in Asymptotically Flat Schwarzschild Black Hole via the Rényi Extended Phase Space Approach

Recently, it has been found that, with the Rényi statistics, the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black hole can be in thermal equilibrium with infinite heat reservior at a fixed temperature when its event horizon radius is larger than the characteristic length scale $L_λ=1/\sqrt{πλ}$, where $λ$ is the nonextensivity parameter. In the Rényi extended phase space with the $PdV$ work term, an off-shell free energy in the canonical ensemble with the thermodynamic volume as an order parameter is considered to identify a first-order Hawking-Page (HP) phase transition as a solid/liquid phase transition. It has the latent heat of fusion from solid (corresponding to thermal radiation) to liquid (corresponding to black hole) in the form of $\sim 1/\sqrtλ$; this is evident of the absence of the HP phase transition in the case of asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black hole from the GB statistics ($λ=0$). Moreover, we investigate the generalized second law of black hole thermodynamics (GSL) in Rényi statistics by considering the black hole as a working substance in heat engine. Interestingly, an efficiency $η$ of the black hole in a Carnot cycle takes the form $η_c=1-T_\text{C}/T_\text{H}$. This confirms the validity of the GSL in the Rényi extended phase space.

Thermodynamics and Van der Waals Phase Transition of Charged Black Holes in Flat Space via Rényi Statistics

The phase structure and critical phenomena of the 3+1 dimensional charged black holes in asymptotically flat spacetime are investigated in terms of thermodynamic properties within the Rényi statistics. With this approach as the non-extensive parameter above zero, we find that the charged black hole can be in thermodynamic equilibrium with surrounding thermal radiation, and have a Hawking-Page phase transition in the same way in the case of AdS charged black hole. This gives more evidence supporting the proposal that there exists an equivalence between the black hole thermodynamics in asymptotically flat spacetime via Rényi statistics and that in asymptotically AdS spacetime via Gibbs-Boltzmann statistics, proposed by Czinner et al. However, the present work also provides another aspect of supporting evidence through exploring the extended phase space within the Rényi statistics. Working on a modified version of Smarr formula, the thermodynamic pressure $P$ and volume $v$ of a charged black hole are found to be related to the non-extensive parameter. The resulting $P-v$ diagram indicates that the thermodynamics of charged black holes in asymptotically flat spacetime via Rényi statistics has the Van der Waals phase structure, equivalent to that in asymptotically AdS spacetime via Gibbs-Boltzmann statistics.

Ground state entanglement entropy for discrete-time two coupled harmonic oscillators

The ground state entanglement of the system, both in discrete-time and continuous-time cases, is quantified through the linear entropy. The result shows that the entanglement increases as the interaction between the particles increases in both time scales. It is also found that the strength of the harmonic potential affects the formation rate of the entanglement of the system. The different feature of the entanglement between continuous-time and discrete-time scales is that, for discrete-time entanglement, there is a cut-off condition. This condition implies that the system can never be in a maximally entangled state.

Double path-integral method for obtaining the mobility of the one-dimensional charge transport in molecular chain

We report on a theoretical investigation concerning the polaronic effect on the transport properties of a charge carrier in the one-dimensional molecular chain. Our technique is based on the Feynman's path integral approach. Analytical expressions for the frequency-dependent mobility and effective mass of the carrier are obtained as functions of electron-phonon coupling. The result exhibits the crossover from a nearly free particle to a heavily trapped particle. We find that the mobility depends on temperature and decreases exponentially with increasing temperature at low temperature. It exhibits large-polaronic-like behaviour in the case of weak electron-phonon coupling. These results agree with the phase transition \cite{Mish} of transport phenomena related to polaron motion in the molecular chain.

Entanglement entropy for a particle coupled with its surrounding

We investigate the entanglement for a model of a particle moving in the lattice (many-body system). The interaction between the particle and the lattice is modelled using Hooke's law. The Feynman path integral approach is applied to compute the density matrix of the system. The complexity of the problem is reduced by considering two-body system (bipartite system). The spatial entanglement of ground state is studied using the linear entropy. We find that increasing the confining potential implies a large spatial separation between the two particles. Thus the interaction between the particles increases according to Hooke's law. This results in the increase in the spatial entanglement.
