Keep the bursts and ditch the interleavers

To facilitate applications in IoT, 5G, and beyond, there is an engineering need to enable high-rate, low-latency communications. Errors in physical channels typically arrive in clumps, but most decoders are designed assuming that channels are memoryless. As a result, communication networks rely on interleaving over tens of thousands of bits so that channel conditions match decoder assumptions. Even for short high rate codes, awaiting sufficient data to interleave at the sender and de-interleave at the receiver is a significant source of unwanted latency. Using existing decoders with non-interleaved channels causes a degradation in block error rate performance owing to mismatch between the decoder's channel model and true channel behaviour. Through further development of the recently proposed Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) algorithm, which we call GRAND-MO for GRAND Markov Order, here we establish that by abandoning interleaving and embracing bursty noise, low-latency, short-code, high-rate communication is possible with block error rates that outperform their interleaved counterparts by a substantial margin. Moreover, while most decoders are twinned to a specific code-book structure, GRAND-MO can decode any code. Using this property, we establish that certain well-known structured codes are ill-suited for use in bursty channels, but Random Linear Codes (RLCs) are robust to correlated noise. This work suggests that the use of RLCs with GRAND-MO is a good candidate for applications requiring high throughput with low latency.

Deformable 3D Convolution for Video Super-Resolution

The spatio-temporal information among video sequences is significant for video super-resolution (SR). However, the spatio-temporal information cannot be fully used by existing video SR methods since spatial feature extraction and temporal motion compensation are usually performed sequentially. In this paper, we propose a deformable 3D convolution network (D3Dnet) to incorporate spatio-temporal information from both spatial and temporal dimensions for video SR. Specifically, we introduce deformable 3D convolution (D3D) to integrate deformable convolution with 3D convolution, obtaining both superior spatio-temporal modeling capability and motion-aware modeling flexibility. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of D3D in exploiting spatio-temporal information. Comparative results show that our network achieves state-of-the-art SR performance. Spatial-Angular Interaction for Light Field Image Super-Resolution

Light field (LF) cameras record both intensity and directions of light rays, and capture scenes from a number of viewpoints. Both information within each perspective (i.e., spatial information) and among different perspectives (i.e., angular information) is beneficial to image super-resolution (SR). In this paper, we propose a spatial-angular interactive network (namely, LF-InterNet) for LF image SR. Specifically, spatial and angular features are first separately extracted from input LFs, and then repetitively interacted to progressively incorporate spatial and angular information. Finally, the interacted features are fused to superresolve each sub-aperture image. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of LF-InterNet over the state-of-the-art methods, i.e., our method can achieve high PSNR and SSIM scores with low computational cost, and recover faithful details in the reconstructed images.

Deep Video Super-Resolution using HR Optical Flow Estimation

Video super-resolution (SR) aims at generating a sequence of high-resolution (HR) frames with plausible and temporally consistent details from their low-resolution (LR) counterparts. The key challenge for video SR lies in the effective exploitation of temporal dependency between consecutive frames. Existing deep learning based methods commonly estimate optical flows between LR frames to provide temporal dependency. However, the resolution conflict between LR optical flows and HR outputs hinders the recovery of fine details. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end video SR network to super-resolve both optical flows and images. Optical flow SR from LR frames provides accurate temporal dependency and ultimately improves video SR performance. Specifically, we first propose an optical flow reconstruction network (OFRnet) to infer HR optical flows in a coarse-to-fine manner. Then, motion compensation is performed using HR optical flows to encode temporal dependency. Finally, compensated LR inputs are fed to a super-resolution network (SRnet) to generate SR results. Extensive experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of HR optical flows for SR performance improvement. Comparative results on the Vid4 and DAVIS-10 datasets show that our network achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

DeOccNet: Learning to See Through Foreground Occlusions in Light Fields

Background objects occluded in some views of a light field (LF) camera can be seen by other views. Consequently, occluded surfaces are possible to be reconstructed from LF images. In this paper, we handle the LF de-occlusion (LF-DeOcc) problem using a deep encoder-decoder network (namely, DeOccNet). In our method, sub-aperture images (SAIs) are first given to the encoder to incorporate both spatial and angular information. The encoded representations are then used by the decoder to render an occlusionfree center-view SAI. To the best of our knowledge, DeOccNet is the first deep learning-based LF-DeOcc method. To handle the insufficiency of training data, we propose an LF synthesis approach to embed selected occlusion masks into existing LF images. Besides, several synthetic and realworld LFs are developed for performance evaluation. Experimental results show that, after training on the generated data, our DeOccNet can effectively remove foreground occlusions and achieves superior performance as compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Flickr1024: A Large-Scale Dataset for Stereo Image Super-Resolution

With the popularity of dual cameras in recently released smart phones, a growing number of super-resolution (SR) methods have been proposed to enhance the resolution of stereo image pairs. However, the lack of high-quality stereo datasets has limited the research in this area. To facilitate the training and evaluation of novel stereo SR algorithms, in this paper, we present a large-scale stereo dataset named Flickr1024, which contains 1024 pairs of high-quality images and covers diverse scenarios. We first introduce the data acquisition and processing pipeline, and then compare several popular stereo datasets. Finally, we conduct crossdataset experiments to investigate the potential benefits introduced by our dataset. Experimental results show that, as compared to the KITTI and Middlebury datasets, our Flickr1024 dataset can help to handle the over-fitting problem and significantly improves the performance of stereo SR methods. The Flickr1024 dataset is available online at: https://yingqianwang.github.io/Flickr1024.

Learning Parallax Attention for Stereo Image Super-Resolution

Stereo image pairs can be used to improve the performance of super-resolution (SR) since additional information is provided from a second viewpoint. However, it is challenging to incorporate this information for SR since disparities between stereo images vary significantly. In this paper, we propose a parallax-attention stereo superresolution network (PASSRnet) to integrate the information from a stereo image pair for SR. Specifically, we introduce a parallax-attention mechanism with a global receptive field along the epipolar line to handle different stereo images with large disparity variations. We also propose a new and the largest dataset for stereo image SR (namely, Flickr1024). Extensive experiments demonstrate that the parallax-attention mechanism can capture correspondence between stereo images to improve SR performance with a small computational and memory cost. Comparative results show that our PASSRnet achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the Middlebury, KITTI 2012 and KITTI 2015 datasets.

Learning for Video Super-Resolution through HR Optical Flow Estimation

Video super-resolution (SR) aims to generate a sequence of high-resolution (HR) frames with plausible and temporally consistent details from their low-resolution (LR) counterparts. The generation of accurate correspondence plays a significant role in video SR. It is demonstrated by traditional video SR methods that simultaneous SR of both images and optical flows can provide accurate correspondences and better SR results. However, LR optical flows are used in existing deep learning based methods for correspondence generation. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end trainable video SR framework to super-resolve both images and optical flows. Specifically, we first propose an optical flow reconstruction network (OFRnet) to infer HR optical flows in a coarse-to-fine manner. Then, motion compensation is performed according to the HR optical flows. Finally, compensated LR inputs are fed to a super-resolution network (SRnet) to generate the SR results. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HR optical flows provide more accurate correspondences than their LR counterparts and improve both accuracy and consistency performance. Comparative results on the Vid4 and DAVIS-10 datasets show that our framework achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Fast single image super-resolution based on sigmoid transformation

Single image super-resolution aims to generate a high-resolution image from a single low-resolution image, which is of great significance in extensive applications. As an ill-posed problem, numerous methods have been proposed to reconstruct the missing image details based on exemplars or priors. In this paper, we propose a fast and simple single image super-resolution strategy utilizing patch-wise sigmoid transformation as an imposed sharpening regularization term in the reconstruction, which realizes amazing reconstruction performance. Extensive experiments compared with other state-of-the-art approaches demonstrate the superior effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Multi-frame image super-resolution with fast upscaling technique

Multi-frame image super-resolution (MISR) aims to fuse information in low-resolution (LR) image sequence to compose a high-resolution (HR) one, which is applied extensively in many areas recently. Different with single image super-resolution (SISR), sub-pixel transitions between multiple frames introduce additional information, attaching more significance to fusion operator to alleviate the ill-posedness of MISR. For reconstruction-based approaches, the inevitable projection of reconstruction errors from LR space to HR space is commonly tackled by an interpolation operator, however crude interpolation may not fit the natural image and generate annoying blurring artifacts, especially after fusion operator. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end fast upscaling technique to replace the interpolation operator, design upscaling filters in LR space for periodic sub-locations respectively and shuffle the filter results to derive the final reconstruction errors in HR space. The proposed fast upscaling technique not only reduce the computational complexity of the upscaling operation by utilizing shuffling operation to avoid complex operation in HR space, but also realize superior performance with fewer blurring artifacts. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed technique, whilst, combining the proposed technique with bilateral total variation (BTV) regu-larization, the MISR approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Anisotropic Magnetotransport and Exotic Longitudinal Linear Magnetoresistance in WTe2 Crystals

WTe2 semimetal, as a typical layered transition-metal dichalcogenide, has recently attracted much attention due to the extremely large, non-saturating parabolic magnetoresistance in perpendicular field. Here, we report a systematic study of the angular dependence of the magnetoresistance in WTe2 single crystal. The violation of the Kohler rule and a significant anisotropic magnetotransport behavior in different magnetic field directions are observed. Surprisingly, when the applied field is parallel to the tungsten chains of WTe2, an exotic large longitudinal linear magnetoresistance as high as 1200% at 15 T and 2 K is identified. Violation of the Kohler rule in transverse magnetoresistance can be understood based on a dual effect of the excitons formation and thermal activation, while large longitudinal linear magnetoresistance reflects perfectly the scattering and nesting of quasi-1D nature of this balanced hole-electron system. Our work will stimulate studies of such double-carrier correlated material and corresponding quantum physics.
