M-estimation of linear models with dependent errors

We study asymptotic properties of $M$-estimates of regression parameters in linear models in which errors are dependent. Weak and strong Bahadur representations of the $M$-estimates are derived and a central limit theorem is established. The results are applied to linear models with errors being short-range dependent linear processes, heavy-tailed linear processes and some widely used nonlinear time series.

Oscillations of empirical distribution functions under dependence

We obtain an almost sure bound for oscillation rates of empirical distribution functions for stationary causal processes. For short-range dependent processes, the oscillation rate is shown to be optimal in the sense that it is as sharp as the one obtained under independence. The dependence conditions are expressed in terms of physical dependence measures which are directly related to the data-generating mechanism of the underlying processes and thus are easy to work with.

Invariance principles for fractionally integrated nonlinear processes

We obtain invariance principles for a wide class of fractionally integrated nonlinear processes. The limiting distributions are shown to be fractional Brownian motions. Under very mild conditions, we extend earlier ones on long memory linear processes to a more general setting. The invariance principles are applied to the popular R/S and KPSS tests.

On the Bahadur representation of sample quantiles for dependent sequences

We establish the Bahadur representation of sample quantiles for linear and some widely used nonlinear processes. Local fluctuations of empirical processes are discussed. Applications to the trimmed and Winsorized means are given. Our results extend previous ones by establishing sharper bounds under milder conditions and thus provide new insight into the theory of empirical processes for dependent random variables.

Empirical processes of dependent random variables

Empirical processes for stationary, causal sequences are considered. We establish empirical central limit theorems for classes of indicators of left half lines, absolutely continuous functions and piecewise differentiable functions. Sample path properties of empirical distribution functions are also discussed. The results are applied to linear processes and Markov chains.

On weighted U-statistics for stationary processes

A weighted U-statistic based on a random sample X_1,...,X_n has the form U_n=\sum_{1\le i,j\le n}w_{i-j}K(X_i,X_j), where K is a fixed symmetric measurable function and the w_i are symmetric weights. A large class of statistics can be expressed as weighted U-statistics or variations thereof. This paper establishes the asymptotic normality of U_n when the sample observations come from a nonlinear time series and linear processes.

Martingale approximations for sums of stationary processes

Approximations to sums of stationary and ergodic sequences by martingales are investigated. Necessary and sufficient conditions for such sums to be asymptotically normal conditionally given the past up to time 0 are obtained. It is first shown that a martingale approximation is necessary for such normality and then that the sums are asymptotically normal if and only if the approximating martingales satisfy a Lindeberg-Feller condition. Using the explicit construction of the approximating martingales, a central limit theorem is derived for the sample means of linear processes. The conditions are not sufficient for the functional version of the central limit theorem. This is shown by an example, and a slightly stronger sufficient condition is given.
