Multi-Range Attentive Bicomponent Graph Convolutional Network for Traffic Forecasting

Traffic forecasting is of great importance to transportation management and public safety, and very challenging due to the complicated spatial-temporal dependency and essential uncertainty brought about by the road network and traffic conditions. Latest studies mainly focus on modeling the spatial dependency by utilizing graph convolutional networks (GCNs) throughout a fixed weighted graph. However, edges, i.e., the correlations between pair-wise nodes, are much more complicated and interact with each other. In this paper, we propose the Multi-Range Attentive Bicomponent GCN (MRA-BGCN), a novel deep learning model for traffic forecasting. We first build the node-wise graph according to the road network distance and the edge-wise graph according to various edge interaction patterns. Then, we implement the interactions of both nodes and edges using bicomponent graph convolution. The multi-range attention mechanism is introduced to aggregate information in different neighborhood ranges and automatically learn the importance of different ranges. Extensive experiments on two real-world road network traffic datasets, METR-LA and PEMS-BAY, show that our MRA-BGCN achieves the state-of-the-art results.

Coulomb focusing in retrapped ionization with near-circularly polarized laser field

The full three-dimensional photoelectron momentum distributions of argon are measured in intense near-circularly polarized laser fields. We observed that the transverse momentum distribution of ejected electrons by 410-nm near-circularly polarized field is unexpectedly narrowed with increasing laser intensity, which is contrary to the conventional rules predicted by adiabatic theory. By analyzing the momentum-resolved angular momentum distribution measured experimentally and the corresponding trajectories of ejected electrons semiclassically, the narrowing can be attributed to a temporary trapping and thereby focusing of a photoelectron by the atomic potential in a quasibound state. With the near-circularly polarized laser field, the strong Coulomb interaction with the rescattering electrons is avoided, thus the Coulomb focusing in the retrapped process is highlighted. We believe that these findings will facilitate understanding and steering electron dynamics in the Coulomb coupled system.

All-optical frequency resolved optical gating for isolated attosecond pulse reconstruction

We demonstrate an all-optical approach for precise characterization of attosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses. Isolated attosecond pulse is produced from high order harmonics using intense driving pulse with proper gating technique. When a weak field is synchronized with the driver, it perturbs the harmonics generation process via altering the accumulated phase of the electron trajectories. The perturbed harmonic spectrum can be formulated as a convolution of the unperturbed dipole and a phase gate, implying the validity of complete reconstruction of isolated attosecond pulses using conventional frequency resolved optical gating method. This in situ measurement avoids the central momentum approximation assumed in the widely used attosecond streaking measurement, providing a simple and reliable metrology for isolated attosecond pulse.

Wave-front controlled attosecond time domain interferometry

Interferometry, as the key technique in modern precision measurements, has been used for length diagnosis in the fields of engineering metrology and astronomy. Analogous interferometric technique for time domain precision measurement is a significant complement to the spatial domain applications and requires the manipulation of the interference on the extreme time and energy scale. Here we present an all-optical interferometry for high precision measurement with attosecond temporal and hundreds of meV energy resolution. The interferometer is based on laser driven high order harmonics which provide a robust sequence of attosecond temporal slits. As applications, we reconstruct the waveform of an arbitrarily polarized optical pulse using the time resolving capability, and capture the abnormal character of the transition dipole near a Cooper minimum in argon using the energy resolution provided. This novel attosecond interferometry opens the possibility for high precision measurement in time energy domain using an all-optical approach.

Doc2EDAG: An End-to-End Document-level Framework for Chinese Financial Event Extraction

Most existing event extraction (EE) methods merely extract event arguments within the sentence scope. However, such sentence-level EE methods struggle to handle soaring amounts of documents from emerging applications, such as finance, legislation, health, etc., where event arguments always scatter across different sentences, and even multiple such event mentions frequently co-exist in the same document. To address these challenges, we propose a novel end-to-end model, Doc2EDAG, which can generate an entity-based directed acyclic graph to fulfill the document-level EE (DEE) effectively. Moreover, we reformalize a DEE task with the no-trigger-words design to ease the document-level event labeling. To demonstrate the effectiveness of Doc2EDAG, we build a large-scale real-world dataset consisting of Chinese financial announcements with the challenges mentioned above. Extensive experiments with comprehensive analyses illustrate the superiority of Doc2EDAG over state-of-the-art methods. Data and codes can be found at https://github.com/dolphin-zs/Doc2EDAG.

Determination of Electron Band Structure using Temporal Interferometry

We propose an all-optical method to directly reconstruct the band structure of semiconductors. Our scheme is based on the temporal Young's interferometer realized by high harmonic generation (HHG) with a few-cycle laser pulse. As a time-energy domain interferometric device, temporal interferometer encodes the band structure into the fringe in the energy domain. The relation between the band structure and the emitted harmonic frequencies is established. This enables us to retrieve the band structure from the HHG spectrum with a single-shot measurement. Our scheme paves the way to study matters under ambient conditions and to track the ultrafast modification of band structures.

LMVP: Video Predictor with Leaked Motion Information

We propose a Leaked Motion Video Predictor (LMVP) to predict future frames by capturing the spatial and temporal dependencies from given inputs. The motion is modeled by a newly proposed component, motion guider, which plays the role of both learner and teacher. Specifically, it {\em learns} the temporal features from real data and {\em guides} the generator to predict future frames. The spatial consistency in video is modeled by an adaptive filtering network. To further ensure the spatio-temporal consistency of the prediction, a discriminator is also adopted to distinguish the real and generated frames. Further, the discriminator leaks information to the motion guider and the generator to help the learning of motion. The proposed LMVP can effectively learn the static and temporal features in videos without the need for human labeling. Experiments on synthetic and real data demonstrate that LMVP can yield state-of-the-art results.

Photoelectron holographic interferometry to probe the longitudinal momentum offset at the tunnel exit

Laser-induced electron tunneling underlies numerous emerging spectroscopic techniques to probe attosecond electron dynamics in atoms and molecules. The improvement of those techniques requires an accurate knowledge of the exit momentum for the tunneling wave packet. Here we demonstrate a photoelectron interferometric scheme to probe the electron momentum longitudinal to the tunnel direction at the tunnel exit by measuring the photoelectron holographic pattern in an orthogonally polarized two-color laser pulse. In this scheme, we use a perturbative 400-nm laser field to modulate the photoelectron holographic fringes generated by a strong 800-nm pulse. The fringe shift offers a direct experimental access to the intermediate canonical momentum of the rescattering electron, allowing us to reconstruct the momentum offset at the tunnel exit with high accuracy. Our result unambiguously proves the existence of nonzero initial longitudinal momentum at the tunnel exit and provides fundamental insights into the non-quasi-static nature of the strong-field tunneling.

Molecular rotation movie filmed with high-harmonic generation

Direct imaging of molecular dynamics is a long-standing goal in physics and chemistry. As an emerging tool, high-harmonic spectroscopy (HHS) enables accessing molecular dynamics on femtosecond to attosecond time scales. However, decoding information from the harmonic signals is usually painstaking due to the coherent nature of high-harmonic generation (HHG). Here we show that this obstacle can be effectively overcome by exploiting machine learning in HHS. Combining the machine learning with an angle-resolved HHS method, we demonstrate that the rich dynamics of molecular rotational wave packet is fully reconstructed from the angular distributions of HHG measured at various time delays of the probe pulse. The experimental retrievals are in good agreement with the numerical simulations. These findings provide a comprehensive picture of molecular rotation in space and time which will facilitate the development of related researches on molecular dynamics imaging.

Getting to the Bottom of Negative Capacitance FETs

In this paper, we take a fresh look at the physics and operation of Negative Capacitance FETs, and provide unambiguous feedback to the device designers by examining NC-FETs' design space for sub-60 mV/dec Subthreshold Swing (SS). Straightforward design rule is derived, for the first time, based on the capacitor network in NC-FETs. Contrary to many ongoing efforts, it is found that: 1) state-of-the-art MOSFET platforms, such as SOI, FinFET, 2D-FET etc., are not suitable for constructing small-SS NC-FETs, unless internal metal gate is introduced; 2) quantum capacitance prevents NC-FETs from achieving hysteresis-free small-SS, and low densityof-states (DOS) material can alleviate this issue, to some extent; 3) NC non-linearity can be engineered to reach a tradeoff between sub-60 SS and hysteresis; 4) it is more encouraging and practical to use NC to recycle subthreshold voltage loss in short-channel MOSFETs, and overdrive voltage (essentially a type of loss).

Notes On a Borwein and Choi's conjecture of cyclotomic polynomials with coefficients $\pm1$

Borwein and Choi conjectured that a polynomial $P(x)$ with coefficients $\pm1$ of degree $N-1$ is cyclotomic iff $$P(x)=\pm Φ_{p_1}(\pm x)Φ_{p_2}(\pm x^{p_1})\cdots Φ_{p_r}(\pm x^{p_1p_2\cdots p_{r-1}})$$ where $N=p_1p_2\cdots p_{r}$ and the $p_i$ are primes, not necessarily distinct. Here $Φ_p(x):=(x^p-1)/(x-1)$ is the $p-$th cyclotomic polynomial. In \cite{1}, they also proved the conjecture for $N$ odd or a power of 2. In this paper we introduce a so-called $E-$transformation, by which we prove the conjecture for a wider variety of cases and present the key as well as a new approach to investigate the conjecture.

Normal bases and irreducible polynomials

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field of $q$ elements and $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ the degree $n$ extension of $\mathbb{F}_q$. A normal basis of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ over $\mathbb{F} _q$ is a basis of the form $\{α,α^q,\dots,α^{q^{n-1}}\}$. An irreducible polynomial in $\mathbb{F} _q[x]$ is called an $N$-polynomial if its roots are linearly independent over $\mathbb{F} _q$. Let $p$ be the characteristic of $\mathbb{F} _q$. Pelis et al. showed that every monic irreducible polynomial with degree $n$ and nonzero trace is an $N$-polynomial provided that $n$ is either a power of $p$ or a prime different from $p$ and $q$ is a primitive root modulo $n$. Chang et al. proved that the converse is also true. By comparing the number of $N$-polynomials with that of irreducible polynomials with nonzero traces, we present an alternative treatment to this problem and show that all the results mentioned above can be easily deduced from our main theorem.

BRITS: Bidirectional Recurrent Imputation for Time Series

Time series are widely used as signals in many classification/regression tasks. It is ubiquitous that time series contains many missing values. Given multiple correlated time series data, how to fill in missing values and to predict their class labels? Existing imputation methods often impose strong assumptions of the underlying data generating process, such as linear dynamics in the state space. In this paper, we propose BRITS, a novel method based on recurrent neural networks for missing value imputation in time series data. Our proposed method directly learns the missing values in a bidirectional recurrent dynamical system, without any specific assumption. The imputed values are treated as variables of RNN graph and can be effectively updated during the backpropagation.BRITS has three advantages: (a) it can handle multiple correlated missing values in time series; (b) it generalizes to time series with nonlinear dynamics underlying; (c) it provides a data-driven imputation procedure and applies to general settings with missing data.We evaluate our model on three real-world datasets, including an air quality dataset, a health-care data, and a localization data for human activity. Experiments show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both imputation and classification/regression accuracies.

Could Interaction with Social Robots Facilitate Joint Attention of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder?

This research addressed whether interactions with social robots could facilitate joint attention of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Two conditions of initiators, namely 'Human' vs. 'Robot' were measured with 15 children with ASD and 15 age-matched typically developing (TD) children. Apart from fixation and gaze transition, a new longest common subsequence (LCS) approach was proposed to analyze eye-movement traces. Results revealed that children with ASD showed deficits of joint attention. Compared to the human agent, robot facilitate less fixations towards the targets, but it attracted more attention and allowed the children to show gaze transition and to follow joint attention logic. This results highlight both potential application of LCS analysis on eye-tracking studies and of social robot to intervention.

Characterization of spin relaxation anisotropy in Co using spin pumping

Ferromagnets are believed to exhibit strongly anisotropic spin relaxation, with relaxation lengths for spin longitudinal to magnetization significantly longer than those for spin transverse to magnetization. Here we characterize the anisotropy of spin relaxation in Co using the spin pumping contribution to Gilbert damping in noncollinearly magnetized Py$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$/Cu/Co trilayer structures. The static magnetization angle between Py$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$ and Co, adjusted under field bias perpendicular to film planes, controls the projections of longitudinal and transverse spin current pumped from Py$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$ into Co. We find nearly isotropic absorption of pure spin current in Co using this technique; fits to a diffusive transport model yield the longitudinal spin relaxation length $< 2$ nm in Co. The longitudinal spin relaxation lengths found are an order of magnitude smaller than those determined by current-perpendicular-to-planes giant magnetoresistance measurements, but comparable with transverse spin relaxation lengths in Co determined by spin pumping.

Junction-Less Monolayer MoS2 FETs

This paper introduces monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) based junction-less (JL) field-effect transistor (FET) and evaluates its performance at the smallest foreseeable (5.9 nm) transistor channel length as per the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS), by employing rigorous quantum transport simulations. By comparing with MoS2 based conventional FETs, it is found that the JL structure naturally lends MoS2 FETs with superior device electrostatics, and higher ON-current for both high-performance and low-standby-power applications, especially at high impurity doping densities. Along with the advantages of the MoS2 JL-FETs, the effects of impurity scattering induced carrier mobility degradation of JL-FETs is also highlighted as a key technological issue to be addressed for exploiting their unique features.

Ultrasensitive THz sensing with high-Q Fano resonances in metasurfaces

High quality factor resonances are extremely promising for designing ultra-sensitive refractive index label-free sensors since it allows intense interaction between electromagnetic waves and the analyte material. Metamaterial and plasmonic sensing has recently attracted a lot of attention due to subwavelength confinement of electromagnetic fields in the resonant structures. However, the excitation of high quality factor resonances in these systems has been a challenge. We excite an order of magnitude higher quality factor resonances in planar terahertz metamaterials that we exploit for ultrasensitive sensing. The low-loss quadrupole and Fano resonances with extremely narrow linewidths enable us to measure the minute spectral shift caused due to the smallest change in the refractive index of the surrounding media. We achieve sensitivity levels of 7.75 x 10^3 nm/ RIU with quadrupole and 5.7 x 10^4 nm/ RIU with the Fano resonances which could be further enhanced by using thinner substrates. These findings would facilitate the design of ultrasensitive real time chemical and biomolecular sensors in the fingerprint region of the terahertz regime.

Characterizing A Database of Sequential Behaviors with Latent Dirichlet Hidden Markov Models

This paper proposes a generative model, the latent Dirichlet hidden Markov models (LDHMM), for characterizing a database of sequential behaviors (sequences). LDHMMs posit that each sequence is generated by an underlying Markov chain process, which are controlled by the corresponding parameters (i.e., the initial state vector, transition matrix and the emission matrix). These sequence-level latent parameters for each sequence are modeled as latent Dirichlet random variables and parameterized by a set of deterministic database-level hyper-parameters. Through this way, we expect to model the sequence in two levels: the database level by deterministic hyper-parameters and the sequence-level by latent parameters. To learn the deterministic hyper-parameters and approximate posteriors of parameters in LDHMMs, we propose an iterative algorithm under the variational EM framework, which consists of E and M steps. We examine two different schemes, the fully-factorized and partially-factorized forms, for the framework, based on different assumptions. We present empirical results of behavior modeling and sequence classification on three real-world data sets, and compare them to other related models. The experimental results prove that the proposed LDHMMs produce better generalization performance in terms of log-likelihood and deliver competitive results on the sequence classification problem.
