ZipFlow: a Compiler-based Framework to Unleash Compressed Data Movement for Modern GPUs

In GPU-accelerated data analytics, the overhead of data transfer from CPU to GPU becomes a performance bottleneck when the data scales beyond GPU memory capacity due to the limited PCIe bandwidth. Data compression has come to rescue for reducing the amount of data transfer while taking advantage of the powerful GPU computation for decompression. To optimize the end-to-end query performance, however, the workflow of data compression, transfer, and decompression must be holistically designed based on the compression strategies and hardware characteristics to balance the I/O latency and computational overhead. In this work, we present ZipFlow, a compiler-based framework for optimizing compressed data transfer in GPU-accelerated data analytics. ZipFlow classifies compression algorithms into three distinct patterns based on their inherent parallelism. For each pattern, ZipFlow employs generalized scheduling strategies to effectively exploit the computational power of GPUs across diverse architectures. Building on these patterns, ZipFlow delivers flexible, high-performance, and holistic optimization, which substantially advances end-to-end data transfer capabilities. We evaluate the effectiveness of ZipFlow on industry-standard benchmark, TPC-H. Overall, ZipFlow achieves an average improvement of 2.08 times over the state-of-the-art GPU compression library (nvCOMP) and 3.14 times speedup against CPU-based query processing engines (e.g., DuckDB).

On Game based Distributed Approach for General Multi-agent Optimal Coverage with Application to UAV Networks

This paper focuses on the optimal coverage problem (OCP) for multi-agent systems with a decentralized optimization mechanism. A game based distributed decision-making method for the multi-agent OCP is proposed to address the high computational costs arising from the large scale of the multi-agent system and to ensure that the game's equilibrium achieves the global performance objective's maximum value. In particular, a distributed algorithm that needs only local information is developed and proved to converge to near-optimal global coverage. Finally, the proposed method is applied to maximize the coverage area of the UAV network for a target region. The simulation results show that our method can require much less computational time than other typical distributed algorithms in related work, while achieving a faster convergence rate. Comparison with centralized optimization also demonstrates that the proposed method has approximate optimization results and high computation efficiency.

Universal Quantum Interconnects via Phase-Coherent Four-Wave Mixing

Quantum transduction, which enables the coherent conversion of quantum information between disparate physical platforms, is a cornerstone for realizing scalable and interoperable quantum networks. Among various approaches, parametric frequency mixing processes such as four-wave mixing (FWM) offer a promising pathway toward efficient and low-noise transduction. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of coherent quantum state transfer by indirectly verifying high-fidelity wavefunction's phase mapping (>99%) from the input field to the generated output field wave. Using a gas-filled hollow-core capillary fiber, we systematically investigate spectral phase evolution across a broad range, including infrared (IR) to ultraviolet (UV) transitions, as well as conversions from telecom-band (1550 nm) to visible (516 nm) and deep-UV (308 nm) wavelengths. Our results reveal that strong phase coherence can be maintained throughout these diverse conversion regimes. Because quantum properties such as coherence and entanglement are intrinsically encoded in both the amplitude and phase of a photonic wavefunction, preserving spectral phase is essential for faithful quantum information transfer. We further show that efficient and phase-preserving transduction can be achieved by tuning system parameters, offering valuable insights into nonlinear coupling dynamics. These findings establish a promising foundation for advancing FWM-based quantum transduction schemes and open new avenues for integrating heterogeneous quantum systems across wide spectral domains within future quantum communication networks.

An XMM-Newton View of the ANdromeda Galaxy as Explored in a Legacy Survey (New-ANGELS) II: Luminosity Function of X-ray Sources

As part of the New-ANGELS program, we systematically investigate the X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of 4506 X-ray sources projected within a radius of 2.5 deg centering on M31. We construct XLFs for different regions in the disk and halo of M31, accounting for the incompleteness with an effective sensitivity map. Assuming that the halo regions contain (mostly) foreground stars and background active galactic nuclei, they are taken as "background" for deriving the XLFs of the sources in the disk. Through modeling XLFs, we decompose the X-ray sources into distinct populations for each region. We find that low-mass X-ray binaries are the dominant X-ray population throughout the disk of M31. The XLFs of M31 reveal a consistently lower integrated LMXB luminosity per stellar mass ($α_\mathrm{LMXB}$) compared to other galaxies, likely due to M31's prolonged period of quiescent star formation. Variations in the XLF shape and $α_\mathrm{LMXB}$ across different regions of M31 suggest that the relationship between integrated luminosity and stellar mass may vary within the galaxy. Additionally, the relatively low integrated luminosity observed in the inner-arm region provides crucial evidence for a rapid fading of M31's LMXBs around 1 Gyr, a finding consistent with recent observations of other nearby galaxies.

Soft X-ray line emission from hot gas in intervening galaxy halos and diffuse gas in the cosmic web

Cosmic hot-gas emission is closely related to halo gas acquisition and galactic feedback processes. Their X-ray observations reveal important physical properties and movements of the baryonic cycle of galactic ecosystems. However, the measured emissions toward a target at a cosmological distance would always include contributions from hot gases along the entire line of sight to the target. Observationally, such contaminations are routinely subtracted via different strategies. With this work, we aim to answer an interesting theoretical question regarding the amount of soft X-ray line emissions from intervening hot gases of different origins. We tackled this problem with the aid of the TNG100 simulation. We generated typical wide-field light cones and estimated their impacts on spectral and flux measurements toward X-ray-emitting galaxy-, group- and cluster-halo targets at lower redshifts. We split the intervening hot gases into three categories; that is, the hot gas that is gravitationally bound to either star-forming or quenched galaxy halos, and the diffuse gas, which is more tenuously distributed permeating the cosmic web structures. We find that along a given line of sight, the diffuse gas that permeates the cosmic web structures produces strong oxygen and iron line emissions at different redshifts. The diffuse gas emission in the soft X-ray band can be equal to the emission from hot gases that are gravitationally bound to intervening galaxy halos. The hot-gas emission from the quiescent galaxy halos can be significantly less than that from star-forming halos along the line of sight. The fluxes from all of the line-of-sight emitters as measured in the energy band of 0.4--0.85 keV can reach ~20--200 % of the emission from the target galaxy, group, and cluster halos.

SimCast: Enhancing Precipitation Nowcasting with Short-to-Long Term Knowledge Distillation

Precipitation nowcasting predicts future radar sequences based on current observations, which is a highly challenging task driven by the inherent complexity of the Earth system. Accurate nowcasting is of utmost importance for addressing various societal needs, including disaster management, agriculture, transportation, and energy optimization. As a complementary to existing non-autoregressive nowcasting approaches, we investigate the impact of prediction horizons on nowcasting models and propose SimCast, a novel training pipeline featuring a short-to-long term knowledge distillation technique coupled with a weighted MSE loss to prioritize heavy rainfall regions. Improved nowcasting predictions can be obtained without introducing additional overhead during inference. As SimCast generates deterministic predictions, we further integrate it into a diffusion-based framework named CasCast, leveraging the strengths from probabilistic models to overcome limitations such as blurriness and distribution shift in deterministic outputs. Extensive experimental results on three benchmark datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, achieving mean CSI scores of 0.452 on SEVIR, 0.474 on HKO-7, and 0.361 on MeteoNet, which outperforms existing approaches by a significant margin.

GPU Acceleration of SQL Analytics on Compressed Data

GPUs are uniquely suited to accelerate (SQL) analytics workloads thanks to their massive compute parallelism and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) -- when datasets fit in the GPU HBM, performance is unparalleled. Unfortunately, GPU HBMs remain typically small when compared with lower-bandwidth CPU main memory. Besides brute-force scaling across many GPUs, current solutions to accelerate queries on large datasets include leveraging data partitioning and loading smaller data batches in GPU HBM, and hybrid execution with a connected device (e.g., CPUs). Unfortunately, these approaches are exposed to the limitations of lower main memory and host-to-device interconnect bandwidths, introduce additional I/O overheads, or incur higher costs. This is a substantial problem when trying to scale adoption of GPUs on larger datasets. Data compression can alleviate this bottleneck, but to avoid paying for costly decompression/decoding, an ideal solution must include computation primitives to operate directly on data in compressed form. This is the focus of our paper: a set of new methods for running queries directly on light-weight compressed data using schemes such as Run-Length Encoding (RLE), index encoding, bit-width reductions, and dictionary encoding. Our novelty includes operating on multiple RLE columns without decompression, handling heterogeneous column encodings, and leveraging PyTorch tensor operations for portability across devices. Experimental evaluations show speedups of an order of magnitude compared to state-of-the-art commercial CPU-only analytics systems, for real-world queries on a production dataset that would not fit into GPU memory uncompressed. This work paves the road for GPU adoption in a much broader set of use cases, and it is complementary to most other scale-out or fallback mechanisms.

Machine Learning Free Quotients of CICYs

Free quotients of Calabi-Yau manifolds play an important role in string compactification. In this paper, we explore machine learning techniques, such as fully connected neural networks and multi-head attention (MHA) models, as a potential approach to detect $\mathbb{Z}_2$, $\mathbb{Z}_3$, $\mathbb{Z}_4$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ free quotients of CICYs. When tested on unseen examples, both models successfully identified almost all free quotients for $\mathbb{Z}_2$, $\mathbb{Z}_3$, $\mathbb{Z}_4$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. These results demonstrate that well-trained machine learning models can effectively generalize to new Calabi-Yau manifolds and may aid in the broader classification of free quotients in the future.

Terabyte-Scale Analytics in the Blink of an Eye

For the past two decades, the DB community has devoted substantial research to take advantage of cheap clusters of machines for distributed data analytics -- we believe that we are at the beginning of a paradigm shift. The scaling laws and popularity of AI models lead to the deployment of incredibly powerful GPU clusters in commercial data centers. Compared to CPU-only solutions, these clusters deliver impressive improvements in per-node compute, memory bandwidth, and inter-node interconnect performance. In this paper, we study the problem of scaling analytical SQL queries on distributed clusters of GPUs, with the stated goal of establishing an upper bound on the likely performance gains. To do so, we build a prototype designed to maximize performance by leveraging ML/HPC best practices, such as group communication primitives for cross-device data movements. This allows us to conduct thorough performance experimentation to point our community towards a massive performance opportunity of at least 60$\times$. To make these gains more relatable, before you can blink twice, our system can run all 22 queries of TPC-H at a 1TB scale factor!

Humanoid Occupancy: Enabling A Generalized Multimodal Occupancy Perception System on Humanoid Robots

Humanoid robot technology is advancing rapidly, with manufacturers introducing diverse heterogeneous visual perception modules tailored to specific scenarios. Among various perception paradigms, occupancy-based representation has become widely recognized as particularly suitable for humanoid robots, as it provides both rich semantic and 3D geometric information essential for comprehensive environmental understanding. In this work, we present Humanoid Occupancy, a generalized multimodal occupancy perception system that integrates hardware and software components, data acquisition devices, and a dedicated annotation pipeline. Our framework employs advanced multi-modal fusion techniques to generate grid-based occupancy outputs encoding both occupancy status and semantic labels, thereby enabling holistic environmental understanding for downstream tasks such as task planning and navigation. To address the unique challenges of humanoid robots, we overcome issues such as kinematic interference and occlusion, and establish an effective sensor layout strategy. Furthermore, we have developed the first panoramic occupancy dataset specifically for humanoid robots, offering a valuable benchmark and resource for future research and development in this domain. The network architecture incorporates multi-modal feature fusion and temporal information integration to ensure robust perception. Overall, Humanoid Occupancy delivers effective environmental perception for humanoid robots and establishes a technical foundation for standardizing universal visual modules, paving the way for the widespread deployment of humanoid robots in complex real-world scenarios.

Fast and Provable Hankel Tensor Completion for Multi-measurement Spectral Compressed Sensing

In this paper, we introduce a novel low-rank Hankel tensor completion approach to address the problem of multi-measurement spectral compressed sensing. By lifting the multiple signals to a Hankel tensor, we reformulate this problem into a low-rank Hankel tensor completion task, exploiting the spectral sparsity via the low multilinear rankness of the tensor. Furthermore, we design a scaled gradient descent algorithm for Hankel tensor completion (ScalHT), which integrates the low-rank Tucker decomposition with the Hankel structure. Crucially, we derive novel fast computational formulations that leverage the interaction between these two structures, achieving up to an $O(\min\{s,n\})$-fold improvement in storage and computational efficiency compared to the existing algorithms, where $n$ is the length of signal, $s$ is the number of measurement vectors. Beyond its practical efficiency, ScalHT is backed by rigorous theoretical guarantees: we establish both recovery and linear convergence guarantees, which, to the best of our knowledge, are the first of their kind for low-rank Hankel tensor completion. Numerical simulations show that our method exhibits significantly lower computational and storage costs while delivering superior recovery performance compared to prior arts.

Suzaku Observation of Merging Clusters Abell 222 and Abell 223

Previous X-ray and optical studies of the galaxy cluster pair Abell 222/223 suggested the possible presence of a filamentary structure connecting the two clusters, a result that appears to be supported by subsequent weak-lensing analyses. This filament has been reported to host a primordial warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), which existed prior to being heated by the interactions of the clusters. In this study, we made an attempt to examine the reported emission feature with data from an archival Suzaku observation, taking advantage of its low detector background. Because the emission is expected to be very weak, we first carefully examined all potential sources of "contamination", and then modelled the residual emission. Due to large uncertainties, unfortunately, our results can neither confirm the presence of the reported emission feature nor rule it out. We discuss the sources of uncertainties.

A new shock in the pre-merging cluster pair 1E2215-2216

The galaxy cluster pair 1E2216.0-0401 and 1E2215.7-0404 represents a major cluster merger in its early stages, a phase that has been scarcely explored in previous studies. Within this system, both axial and equatorial merger shocks have been identified. Recent XMM-Newton observations of the southern region of the cluster pair have increased the total exposure time to approximately 300 ks, enhancing the sensitivity to detect faint shock features in the cluster outskirts. Through a combined analysis of XMM-Newton and Chandra data, including both imaging and spectral techniques, a new shock front has been identified at approximately 2'.3 south of the X-ray brightness peak of 1E2215. This shock front exhibits a surface brightness ratio of $1.33 \pm 0.07$ and a temperature ratio of $1.22^{+0.13}_{-0.14}$ in XMM-Newton, consistent with Chandra results. The Mach number, independently calculated from both the temperature and surface brightness discontinuities, yields consistent values of $\mathcal{M} \approx 1.2$ . The age, velocity, and spatial distribution of this shock suggest that it shares a common physical origin with the previously identified equatorial shock.

Occupancy World Model for Robots

Understanding and forecasting the scene evolutions deeply affect the exploration and decision of embodied agents. While traditional methods simulate scene evolutions through trajectory prediction of potential instances, current works use the occupancy world model as a generative framework for describing fine-grained overall scene dynamics. However, existing methods cluster on the outdoor structured road scenes, while ignoring the exploration of forecasting 3D occupancy scene evolutions for robots in indoor scenes. In this work, we explore a new framework for learning the scene evolutions of observed fine-grained occupancy and propose an occupancy world model based on the combined spatio-temporal receptive field and guided autoregressive transformer to forecast the scene evolutions, called RoboOccWorld. We propose the Conditional Causal State Attention (CCSA), which utilizes camera poses of next state as conditions to guide the autoregressive transformer to adapt and understand the indoor robotics scenarios. In order to effectively exploit the spatio-temporal cues from historical observations, Hybrid Spatio-Temporal Aggregation (HSTA) is proposed to obtain the combined spatio-temporal receptive field based on multi-scale spatio-temporal windows. In addition, we restructure the OccWorld-ScanNet benchmark based on local annotations to facilitate the evaluation of the indoor 3D occupancy scene evolution prediction task. Experimental results demonstrate that our RoboOccWorld outperforms state-of-the-art methods in indoor 3D occupancy scene evolution prediction task. The code will be released soon.

RoboOcc: Enhancing the Geometric and Semantic Scene Understanding for Robots

3D occupancy prediction enables the robots to obtain spatial fine-grained geometry and semantics of the surrounding scene, and has become an essential task for embodied perception. Existing methods based on 3D Gaussians instead of dense voxels do not effectively exploit the geometry and opacity properties of Gaussians, which limits the network's estimation of complex environments and also limits the description of the scene by 3D Gaussians. In this paper, we propose a 3D occupancy prediction method which enhances the geometric and semantic scene understanding for robots, dubbed RoboOcc. It utilizes the Opacity-guided Self-Encoder (OSE) to alleviate the semantic ambiguity of overlapping Gaussians and the Geometry-aware Cross-Encoder (GCE) to accomplish the fine-grained geometric modeling of the surrounding scene. We conduct extensive experiments on Occ-ScanNet and EmbodiedOcc-ScanNet datasets, and our RoboOcc achieves state-of the-art performance in both local and global camera settings. Further, in ablation studies of Gaussian parameters, the proposed RoboOcc outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by a large margin of (8.47, 6.27) in IoU and mIoU metric, respectively. The codes will be released soon.

HumanoidPano: Hybrid Spherical Panoramic-LiDAR Cross-Modal Perception for Humanoid Robots

The perceptual system design for humanoid robots poses unique challenges due to inherent structural constraints that cause severe self-occlusion and limited field-of-view (FOV). We present HumanoidPano, a novel hybrid cross-modal perception framework that synergistically integrates panoramic vision and LiDAR sensing to overcome these limitations. Unlike conventional robot perception systems that rely on monocular cameras or standard multi-sensor configurations, our method establishes geometrically-aware modality alignment through a spherical vision transformer, enabling seamless fusion of 360 visual context with LiDAR's precise depth measurements. First, Spherical Geometry-aware Constraints (SGC) leverage panoramic camera ray properties to guide distortion-regularized sampling offsets for geometric alignment. Second, Spatial Deformable Attention (SDA) aggregates hierarchical 3D features via spherical offsets, enabling efficient 360°-to-BEV fusion with geometrically complete object representations. Third, Panoramic Augmentation (AUG) combines cross-view transformations and semantic alignment to enhance BEV-panoramic feature consistency during data augmentation. Extensive evaluations demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on the 360BEV-Matterport benchmark. Real-world deployment on humanoid platforms validates the system's capability to generate accurate BEV segmentation maps through panoramic-LiDAR co-perception, directly enabling downstream navigation tasks in complex environments. Our work establishes a new paradigm for embodied perception in humanoid robotics.
