BrainNNExplainer: An Interpretable Graph Neural Network Framework for Brain Network based Disease Analysis

Interpretable brain network models for disease prediction are of great value for the advancement of neuroscience. GNNs are promising to model complicated network data, but they are prone to overfitting and suffer from poor interpretability, which prevents their usage in decision-critical scenarios like healthcare. To bridge this gap, we propose BrainNNExplainer, an interpretable GNN framework for brain network analysis. It is mainly composed of two jointly learned modules: a backbone prediction model that is specifically designed for brain networks and an explanation generator that highlights disease-specific prominent brain network connections. Extensive experimental results with visualizations on two challenging disease prediction datasets demonstrate the unique interpretability and outstanding performance of BrainNNExplainer.

Third Party Risk Modelling and Assessment for Safe UAV Path Planning in Metropolitan Environments

Various applications of advanced air mobility (AAM) in urban environments facilitate our daily life and public services. As one of the key issues of realizing these applications autonomously, path planning problem has been studied with main objectives on minimizing travel distance, flight time and energy cost. However, AAM operations in metropolitan areas bring safety and society issues. Because most of AAM aircraft are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and they may fail to operate resulting in fatality risk, property damage risk and societal impacts (noise and privacy) to the public. To quantitatively assess these risks and mitigate them in planning phase, this paper proposes an integrated risk assessment model and develops a hybrid algorithm to solve the risk-based 3D path planning problem. The integrated risk assessment method considers probability and severity models of UAV impact ground people and vehicle. By introducing gravity model, the population density and traffic density are estimated in a finer scale, which enables more accurate risk assessment. The 3D risk-based path planning problem is first formulated as a special minimum cost flow problem. Then, a hybrid estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA) and risk-based A* (named as EDA-RA*) algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. To improve computational efficiency, k-means clustering method is incorporated into EDA-RA* to provide both global and local search heuristic information, which formed the EDA and fast risk-based A* algorithm we call EDA-FRA*. Case study results show that the risk assessment model can capture high risk areas and the generated risk map enables safe UAV path planning in urban complex environments.

Price change prediction of ultra high frequency financial data based on temporal convolutional network

Through in-depth analysis of ultra high frequency (UHF) stock price change data, more reasonable discrete dynamic distribution models are constructed in this paper. Firstly, we classify the price changes into several categories. Then, temporal convolutional network (TCN) is utilized to predict the conditional probability for each category. Furthermore, attention mechanism is added into the TCN architecture to model the time-varying distribution for stock price change data. Empirical research on constituent stocks of Chinese Shenzhen Stock Exchange 100 Index (SZSE 100) found that the TCN framework model and the TCN (attention) framework have a better overall performance than GARCH family models and the long short-term memory (LSTM) framework model for the description of the dynamic process of the UHF stock price change sequence. In addition, the scale of the dataset reached nearly 10 million, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no previous attempt to apply TCN to such a large-scale UHF transaction price dataset in Chinese stock market.

Radial profile of bottom quarks in jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

Angular correlations between heavy quark (HQ) and its tagged jet are potentially new tools to gain insight into the in-medium partonic interactions in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In this work, we present the first theoretical study on the radial profiles of B mesons in jets in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. The initial production of bottom quark tagged jet in p+p is computed by SHERPA which matches the next-to-leading order matrix elements with contributions of parton shower, whereas the massive quark traversing the QGP described by a Monte Carlo model SHELL which can simultaneously simulate light and heavy flavor in-medium energy loss within the framework of Langevin evolution. In p+p collisions, we find that at lower $p_T^Q$ the radial profiles of heavy flavors in jets are sensitive to the heavy quark mass. In $0-10\%$ Pb+Pb collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, we observe an inverse modification pattern of the B mesons radial profiles in jets at $\rm 4 20$ GeV region naturally has a narrower initial distribution and consequently leads to a narrower modification pattern of radial profile; however the diffusion nature of the heavy flavor in-medium interactions will give rise to a broader modification pattern of radial profile. These two effects consequently compete and offset with each other, and the b quarks in jets benefit more from the former and suffers less diffusion effect compared to that of c quarks in jets. These findings can be tested in the future experimental measurements at the LHC to gain better understanding of the mass effect of jet quenching.

Deep Kernel Gaussian Process Based Financial Market Predictions

The Gaussian Process with a deep kernel is an extension of the classic GP regression model and this extended model usually constructs a new kernel function by deploying deep learning techniques like long short-term memory networks. A Gaussian Process with the kernel learned by LSTM, abbreviated as GP-LSTM, has the advantage of capturing the complex dependency of financial sequential data, while retaining the ability of probabilistic inference. However, the deep kernel Gaussian Process has not been applied to forecast the conditional returns and volatility in financial market to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, grid search algorithm, used for performing hyper-parameter optimization, is integrated with GP-LSTM to predict both the conditional mean and volatility of stock returns, which are then combined together to calculate the conditional Sharpe Ratio for constructing a long-short portfolio. The experiments are performed on a dataset covering all constituents of Shenzhen Stock Exchange Component Index. Based on empirical results, we find that the GP-LSTM model can provide more accurate forecasts in stock returns and volatility, which are jointly evaluated by the performance of constructed portfolios. Further sub-period analysis of the experiment results indicates that the superiority of GP-LSTM model over the benchmark models stems from better performance in highly volatile periods.

Mathematical Theory of Atomic Norm Denoising In Blind Two-Dimensional Super-Resolution (Extended Version)

This paper develops a new mathematical framework for denoising in blind two-dimensional (2D) super-resolution upon using the atomic norm. The framework denoises a signal that consists of a weighted sum of an unknown number of time-delayed and frequency-shifted unknown waveforms from its noisy measurements. Moreover, the framework also provides an approach for estimating the unknown parameters in the signal. We prove that when the number of the observed samples satisfies certain lower bound that is a function of the system parameters, we can estimate the noise-free signal, with very high accuracy, upon solving a regularized least-squares atomic norm minimization problem. We derive the theoretical mean-squared error of the estimator, and we show that it depends on the noise variance, the number of unknown waveforms, the number of samples, and the dimension of the low-dimensional space where the unknown waveforms lie. Finally, we verify the theoretical findings of the paper by using extensive simulation experiments.

Medium modifications of girth distributions for inclusive jets and $Z^0+{\rm jet}$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

In this paper we investigate the medium modifications of girth distributions for inclusive jets and $Z^0$ tagged jets with small radius ($R=0.2$) in Pb+Pb collisions with $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV at the LHC. The partonic spectrum in the initial hard scattering of elementary collisions are obtained by a event generator POWHEG+PYTHIA, which matches the next-to-leading (NLO) matrix elements with parton showering, and energy loss of faster parton traversing in hot/dense QCD medium is calculated by Monte Carlo simulation within Higher-Twist formalism of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions. We present the model calculations of event normalized girth distributions for inclusive jets in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV, which give nice descriptions of ALICE measurements. It is shown that the girth distributions of inclusive jets in Pb+Pb are shifted to lower girth region relative to that in p+p. Thus the nuclear modification factor of girth distributions for inclusive jets is larger than unity at small girth region, while smaller than one at large girth region. This behavior results from more soft fragments inside a jet as well as the fraction alteration of gluon/quark initiated jets in heavy-ion collisions. We further predict the girth distributions for $Z^0$ boson tagged jets in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV, and demonstrate that the medium modification on girth distributions for $Z^0$ tagged jets is less pronounced as compared to that for inclusive jets because the dominant components of $Z^0$ tagged jets are quark-initiated jets.

Improved ACD-based financial trade durations prediction leveraging LSTM networks and Attention Mechanism

The liquidity risk factor of security market plays an important role in the formulation of trading strategies. A more liquid stock market means that the securities can be bought or sold more easily. As a sound indicator of market liquidity, the transaction duration is the focus of this study. We concentrate on estimating the probability density function p(Δt_(i+1) |G_i) where Δt_(i+1) represents the duration of the (i+1)-th transaction, G_i represents the historical information at the time when the (i+1)-th transaction occurs. In this paper, we propose a new ultra-high-frequency (UHF) duration modelling framework by utilizing long short-term memory (LSTM) networks to extend the conditional mean equation of classic autoregressive conditional duration (ACD) model while retaining the probabilistic inference ability. And then the attention mechanism is leveraged to unveil the internal mechanism of the constructed model. In order to minimize the impact of manual parameter tuning, we adopt fixed hyperparameters during the training process. The experiments applied to a large-scale dataset prove the superiority of the proposed hybrid models. In the input sequence, the temporal positions which are more important for predicting the next duration can be efficiently highlighted via the added attention mechanism layer.

Classification of nonnegative solutions to static Schrödinger-Hartree and Schrödinger-Maxwell equations with combined nonlinearities

In this paper, we are concerned with static Schrödinger-Hartree and Schrödinger-Maxwell equations with combined nonlinearities. We derive the explicit forms for positive solution $u$ in the critical case and non-existence of nontrivial nonnegative solutions in the subcritical cases (see Theorem \ref{Thm0} and \ref{Thm1}). The arguments used in our proof is a variant (for nonlocal nonlinearity) of the direct moving spheres method for fractional Laplacians in \cite{CLZ}. The main ingredients are the variants (for nonlocal nonlinearity) of the maximum principles, i.e., \emph{Narrow region principle} (Theorem \ref{Thm2} and \ref{Thm3}).

A reduction approach to silting objects for derived categories of hereditary categories

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hereditary abelian category over a field $k$ with finite dimensional $\operatorname{Hom}$ and $\operatorname{Ext}$ spaces. It is proved that the bounded derived category $\mathcal{D}^b(\mathcal{H})$ has a silting object iff $\mathcal{H}$ has a tilting object iff $\mathcal{D}^b(\mathcal{H})$ has a simple-minded collection with acyclic $\operatorname{Ext}$-quiver. Along the way, we obtain a new proof for the fact that every presilting object of $\mathcal{D}^b(\mathcal{H})$ is a partial silting object. We also consider the question of complements for pre-simple-minded collections. In contrast to presilting objects, a pre-simple-minded collection $\mathcal{R}$ of $\mathcal{D}^b(\mathcal{H})$ can be completed into a simple-minded collection iff the $\operatorname{Ext}$-quiver of $\mathcal{R}$ is acyclic.

Blow-up for Strauss type wave equation with damping and potential

We study a kind of nonlinear wave equations with damping and potential, whose coefficients are both critical in the sense of the scaling and depend only on the spatial variables. Based on the earlier works, one may think there are two kinds of blow-up phenomenons when the exponent of the nonlinear term is small. It also means there are two kinds of law to determine the critical exponent. In this paper, we obtain a blow-up result and get the estimate of the upper bound of the lifespan in critical and sub-critical cases. All of the results support such a conjecture, although for now, the existence part is still open.

Lifespan of solutions to the Strauss type wave system on asymptotically flat space-times

By assuming certain local energy estimates on $(1+3)$-dimensional asymptotically flat space-time, we study the existence portion of the \emph{Strauss} type wave system. Firstly we give a kind of space-time estimates which are related to the local energy norm that appeared in \cite{MR2944027}. These estimates can be used to prove a series of weighted \emph{Strichartz} and \emph{KSS} type estimates, for wave equations on asymptotically flat space-time. Then we apply the space-time estimates to obtain the lower bound of the lifespan when the nonlinear exponents $p$ and $q\ge 2$. In particular, our bound for the subcritical case is sharp in general and we extend the known region of $(p,q)$ to admit global solutions. In addition, the initial data are not required to be compactly supported, when $p, q>2$.

Where is the Model Looking At?--Concentrate and Explain the Network Attention

Image classification models have achieved satisfactory performance on many datasets, sometimes even better than human. However, The model attention is unclear since the lack of interpretability. This paper investigates the fidelity and interpretability of model attention. We propose an Explainable Attribute-based Multi-task (EAT) framework to concentrate the model attention on the discriminative image area and make the attention interpretable. We introduce attributes prediction to the multi-task learning network, helping the network to concentrate attention on the foreground objects. We generate attribute-based textual explanations for the network and ground the attributes on the image to show visual explanations. The multi-model explanation can not only improve user trust but also help to find the weakness of network and dataset. Our framework can be generalized to any basic model. We perform experiments on three datasets and five basic models. Results indicate that the EAT framework can give multi-modal explanations that interpret the network decision. The performance of several recognition approaches is improved by guiding network attention.

Radial profile of heavy quarks in jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

In high energy nuclear collisions, heavy flavor tagged jets are useful hard probes to study the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In this talk, we present the first theoretical prediction of the $D^0$ meson radial distributions in jets relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV, it shows a nice agreement with the available experimental data. The in-medium jet evolution in the study is described by a Monte Carlo transport model which has been incorporated with the initial events as input provided by the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA. In such evolution process, both elastic and inelastic parton energy loss in the hot and dense medium are taken into account. Within this same simulation framework, we predict different modification patterns of the radial profile of charm and bottom quarks in jets in Pb+Pb collisions: jet quenching effect will lead the charm quarks diffuse to lager radius while lead the bottom quarks distributed closer to jet axis.

The global geometrical property of jet events in high-energy nuclear collisions

We present the first theoretical study of medium modifications of the global geometrical pattern, i.e., transverse sphericity ($S_{\perp}$) distribution of jet events with parton energy loss in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In our investigation, POWHEG+PYTHIA is employed to make an accurate description of transverse sphericity in the p+p baseline, which combines the next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD calculations with the matched parton shower (PS). The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model of the parton energy loss is implemented to simulate the in-medium evolution of jets. We calculate the event normalized transverse sphericity distribution in central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC, and give its medium modifications. An enhancement of transverse sphericity distribution at small $S_{\perp}$ region but a suppression at large $S_{\perp}$ region are observed in A+A collisions as compared to their p+p references, which indicates that in overall the geometry of jet events in Pb+Pb becomes more pencil-like. We demonstrate that for events with 2 jets in the final-state of heavy-ion collisions, the jet quenching makes the geometry more sphere-like with medium-induced gluon radiation. However, for events with $\ge 3$~jets, parton energy loss in the QCD medium leads to the events more pencil-like due to jet number reduction, where less energetic jets may lose their energies and then fall off the jet selection kinematic cut. These two effects offset each other and in the end result in more jetty events in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in p+p.

Existence and symmetry of solutions to 2-D Schrödinger-Newton equations

In this paper, we consider the following 2-D Schrödinger-Newton equations \begin{eqnarray*} -Δu+a(x)u+\fracγ{2π}\left(\log(|\cdot|)*|u|^p\right){|u|}^{p-2}u=b{|u|}^{q-2}u \qquad \text{in} \,\,\, \mathbb{R}^{2}, \end{eqnarray*} where $a\in C(\mathbb{R}^{2})$ is a $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$-periodic function with $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^{2}}a>0$, $γ>0$, $b\geq0$, $p\geq2$ and $q\geq 2$. By using ideas from \cite{CW,DW,Stubbe}, under mild assumptions, we obtain existence of ground state solutions and mountain pass solutions to the above equations for $p\geq2$ and $q\geq2p-2$ via variational methods. The auxiliary functional $J_{1}$ plays a key role in the cases $p\geq3$. We also prove the radial symmetry of positive solutions (up to translations) for $p\geq2$ and $q\geq 2$. The corresponding results for planar Schrödinger-Poisson systems will also be obtained. Our theorems extend the results in \cite{CW,DW} from $p=2$ and $b=1$ to general $p\geq2$ and $b\geq0$.

Liouville type theorems for elliptic equations with Dirichlet conditions in exterior domains

In this paper, we are mainly concerned with the Dirichlet problems in exterior domains for the following elliptic equations: \begin{equation}\label{GPDE0} (-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}u(x)=f(x,u) \,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\, \text{in} \,\,\,\, Ω_{r}:=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}\,|\,|x|>r\} \end{equation} with arbitrary $r>0$, where $n\geq2$, $0<α\leq 2$ and $f(x,u)$ satisfies some assumptions. A typical case is the Hardy-Hénon type equations in exterior domains. We first derive the equivalence between \eqref{GPDE0} and the corresponding integral equations \begin{equation}\label{GIE0} u(x)=\int_{Ω_{r}}G_α(x,y)f(y,u(y))dy, \end{equation} where $G_α(x,y)$ denotes the Green's function for $(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ in $Ω_{r}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Then, we establish Liouville theorems for \eqref{GIE0} via the method of scaling spheres developed in \cite{DQ0} by Dai and Qin, and hence obtain the Liouville theorems for \eqref{GPDE0}. Liouville theorems for integral equations related to higher order Navier problems in $Ω_{r}$ are also derived.

Learning Optimal Tree Models Under Beam Search

Retrieving relevant targets from an extremely large target set under computational limits is a common challenge for information retrieval and recommendation systems. Tree models, which formulate targets as leaves of a tree with trainable node-wise scorers, have attracted a lot of interests in tackling this challenge due to their logarithmic computational complexity in both training and testing. Tree-based deep models (TDMs) and probabilistic label trees (PLTs) are two representative kinds of them. Though achieving many practical successes, existing tree models suffer from the training-testing discrepancy, where the retrieval performance deterioration caused by beam search in testing is not considered in training. This leads to an intrinsic gap between the most relevant targets and those retrieved by beam search with even the optimally trained node-wise scorers. We take a first step towards understanding and analyzing this problem theoretically, and develop the concept of Bayes optimality under beam search and calibration under beam search as general analyzing tools for this purpose. Moreover, to eliminate the discrepancy, we propose a novel algorithm for learning optimal tree models under beam search. Experiments on both synthetic and real data verify the rationality of our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm compared to state-of-the-art methods.
