Multicolour wavelength-tunable lasing from a single bandgap-graded alloy nanoribbon

Tunable lasing from 578 nm to 640 nm is observed from a single CdSSe bandgap-graded alloy nanoribbon, by selecting the excited spot at room temperature. Though reabsorption is a serious problem to achieve lasing at short wavelength, multiple scatters on the nanoribbon form localized cavities, and thus realize lasing at different wavelengths. By increasing the excitation area, we also observe multicolour lasing from the same nanoribbon simultaneously.

On-chip three-dimensional high-Q microcavities fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing

We report on the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-Q whispering gallery microcavities on a fused silica chip by femtosecond laser microfabriction, enabled by the 3D nature of femtosecond laser direct writing. The processing mainly consists of formation of freestanding microdisks by femtosecond laser direct writing and subsequent wet chemical etching. CO2 laser annealing is followed to smooth the microcavity surface. Microcavities with arbitrary tilting angle, lateral and vertical positioning are demonstrated, and the quality (Q)-factor of a typical microcavity is measured to be up to 1.07x10^6, which is currently limited by the low spatial resolution of motion stage used during the laser patterning and can be improved with motion stages of higher resolutions.

Dynamics of Tachyon and Phantom Field beyond the Inverse Square Potentials

We investigate the cosmological evolution of the tachyon and phantom-tachyon scalar field by considering the potential parameter $Γ$($=\frac{V V"}{V'^2}$) as a function of another potential parameter $λ$($=\frac{V'}{κV^{3/2}}$), which correspondingly extends the analysis of the evolution of our universe from two-dimensional autonomous dynamical system to the three-dimension. It allows us to investigate the more general situation where the potential is not restricted to inverse square potential and .One result is that, apart from the inverse square potential, there are a large number of potentials which can give the scaling and dominant solution when the function $Γ(λ)$ equals $3/2$ for one or some values of $λ_{*}$ as well as the parameter $λ_{*}$ satisfies condition Eq.(18) or Eq.(19). We also find that for a class of different potentials the dynamics evolution of the universe are actually the same and therefore undistinguishable.

Subwavelength focusing of light by a tapered microtube

We propose a mechanism for subwavelength focusing at optical frequencies based on the use of a tapered microtube fabricated from a glass capillary tube. Using coherent illumination at 671nm and a near-field scanning optical microscope probe which was mounted on a 3-axis piezo nanopositioning stage, a sequence of 2-D intensity profiles were obtained. Our experimental results reveal the smallest focal spot with a near diffraction-limited full width at half-maximum of ~435nm(0.65λ)at a distance of ~1.47μm (2.2λ) from the output endface of microtube. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with our numerical simulation.

Comment on "Comment on 'Observation of a Push Force on the End Face of a Nanometer Silica Filament Exerted by Outgoing Light'"

In a recent comment [1], Masud Mansuripur presented some concerns with theoretical and experimental interpretations of She's paper [2], and concluded that She's conclusion is incorrect. We agree that, some of the She's work required further interpretation in detail. However, after careful investigation, we found that points raised in Mansuripur's comment are incomplete or incorrect,as explained below.

Exact Analysis of Scaling and Dominant Attractors Beyond the Exponential Potential

By considering the potential parameter $Γ$ as a function of another potential parameter $λ$[47], We successfully extend the analysis of two-dimensional autonomous dynamical system of quintessence scalar field model to the analysis of three-dimension, which makes us be able to research the critical points of a large number of potentials beyond the exponential potential exactly. We find that there are ten critical points in all, three points $P_{3, 5, 6}$} are general points which are possessed by all quintessence models regardless of the form of potentials and the rest points are closely connected to the concrete potentials. It is quite surprising that, apart from the exponential potential, there are a large number of potentials which can give the scaling solution when the function $f(λ)(=Γ(λ)-1)$ equals zero for one or some values of $λ_{*}$ and if the parameter $λ_{*}$ also satisfies the condition Eq.(16) or Eq.(17) at the same time. We give the differential equations to derive these potentials $V(ϕ)$ from $f(λ)$. We also find that, if some conditions are satisfied, the de-Sitter-like dominant point $P_4$ and the scaling solution point $P_9$(or $P_{10}$) can be stable simultaneously but $P_9$ and $P_{10}$ can not be stable simultaneity. Although we survey scaling solutions beyond the exponential potential for ordinary quintessence models in standard general relativity, this method can be applied to other extensively scaling solution models studied in literature[46] including coupled quintessence, (coupled-)phantom scalar field, k-essence and even beyond the general relativity case $H^2 \proptoρ_T^n$. we also discuss the disadvantage of our approach.

Emission spectrum of a dressed exciton-biexciton complex in a semiconductor quantum dot

The photoluminescence spectrum of a single quantum dot was recorded as a secondary resonant laser optically dressed either the vacuum-to-exciton or the exciton-to-biexciton transitions. High-resolution polarization-resolved measurements using a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer reveal splittings of the linearly-polarized fine-structure states that are non-degenerate in an asymmetric quantum dot. These splittings manifest as either triplets or doublets and depend sensitively on laser intensity and detuning. Our approach realizes complete resonant control of a multi-excitonic system in emission, which can be either pulsed or continuous-wave, and offers direct access to the emitted photons.

Exponential Potentials and Attractor Solution of Dilatonic Cosmology

We present the scalar-tensor gravitational theory with an exponential potential in which pauli metric is regarded as the physical space-time metric. We show that it is essentially equivalent to coupled quintessence(CQ) model. However for baryotropic fluid being radiation there are in fact no coupling between dilatonic scalar field and radiation. We present the critical points for baryotropic fluid and investigate the properties of critical points when the baryotropic matter is specified to ordinary matter. It is possible for all the critical points to be attractors as long as the parameters $λ$ and $β$ satisfy certain conditions. To demonstrate the attractor behaviors of these critical points, We numerically plot the phase plane for each critical point. Finally with the bound on $β$ from the observation and the fact that our universe is undergoing an accelerating expansion, we conclude that present accelerating expansion is not the eventual stage of universe. Moreover, we numerically describe the evolution of the density parameters $Ω$ and the decelerating factor $q$, and computer the present values of some cosmological parameters, which are consistent with current observational data.

Cosmology in Nonlinear Born-Infeld Scalar Field Theory With Negative Potentials

The cosmological evolution in Nonlinear Born-Infeld(hereafter NLBI) scalar field theory with negative potentials was investigated. The cosmological solutions in some important evolutive epoches were obtained. The different evolutional behaviors between NLBI and linear(canonical) scalar field theory have been presented. A notable characteristic is that NLBI scalar field behaves as ordinary matter nearly the singularity while the linear scalar field behaves as "stiff" matter. We find that in order to accommodate current observational accelerating expanding universe the value of potential parameters $|m|$ and $|V_0|$ must have an {\it upper bound}. We compare different cosmological evolutions for different potential parameters $m, V_0$.

Cosmologies with General Non-Canonical Scalar Field

We generally investigate the scalar field model with the lagrangian $L=F(X)-V(ϕ)$, which we call it {\it General Non-Canonical Scalar Field Model}. We find that it is a special square potential(with a negative minimum) that drives the linear field solution($ϕ=ϕ_0t$) while in K-essence model(with the lagrangian $L=-V(ϕ)F(X)$) the potential should be taken as an inverse square form. Hence their cosmological evolution are totally different. We further find that this linear field solutions are highly degenerate, and their cosmological evolutions are actually equivalent to the divergent model where its sound speed diverges. We also study the stability of the linear field solution. With a simple form of $F(X)=1-\sqrt{1-2X}$ we indicate that our model may be considered as a unified model of dark matter and dark energy. Finally we study the case when the baryotropic index $γ$ is constant. It shows that, unlike the K-essence, the detailed form of F(X) depends on the potential $V(ϕ)$. We analyze the stability of this constant $γ_0$ solution and find that they are stable for $γ_0\leq1$. Finally we simply consider the constant c_s^2 case and get an exact solution for F(X)

A Comparison of Quintessence and Nonlinear Born-Infeld Scalar Field Using Gold Supernova data

We study the Non-Linear Born-Infeld(NLBI) scalar field model and quintessence model with two different potentials($V(ϕ)=-sϕ$ and ${1/2}m^2ϕ^2$). We investigate the differences between those two models. We explore the equation of state parameter w and the evolution of scale factor $a(t)$ in both NLBI scalar field and quintessence model. The present age of universe and the transition redshift are also obtained. We use the Gold dataset of 157 SN-Ia to constrain the parameters of the two models. All the results show that NLBI model is slightly superior to quintessence model.

The Evolution of Universe with th B-I Type Phantom Scalar Field

We considered the phantom cosmology with a lagrangian $\displaystyle L=\frac{1}η[1-\sqrt{1+ηg^{μν}ϕ_{, μ}ϕ_{, ν}}]-u(ϕ)$, which is original from the nonlinear Born-Infeld type scalar field with the lagrangian $\displaystyle L=\frac{1}η[1-\sqrt{1-ηg^{μν}ϕ_{, μ}ϕ_{, ν}}]-u(ϕ)$. This cosmological model can explain the accelerated expansion of the universe with the equation of state parameter $w\leq-1$. We get a sufficient condition for a arbitrary potential to admit a late time attractor solution: the value of potential $u(X_c)$ at the critical point $(X_c,0)$ should be maximum and large than zero. We study a specific potential with the form of $u(ϕ)=V_0(1+\fracϕ{ϕ_0})e^{(-\fracϕ{ϕ_0})}$ via phase plane analysis and compute the cosmological evolution by numerical analysis in detail. The result shows that the phantom field survive till today (to account for the observed late time accelerated expansion) without interfering with the nucleosynthesis of the standard model(the density parameter $Ω_ϕ\simeq10^{-12}$ at the equipartition epoch), and also avoid the future collapse of the universe.
