Angle-Domain Doppler Pre-Compensation for High-Mobility OFDM Uplink with a Massive ULA

In this paper, we propose a Doppler pre-compensation scheme for high-mobility orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) uplink, where a high-speed terminal transmits signals to the base station (BS). Considering that the time-varying multipath channel consists of multiple Doppler frequency offsets (DFOs) with different angle of departures (AoDs), we propose to perform DFO pre-compensation at the transmitter with a large-scale uniform linear array (ULA). The transmitted signal passes through a beamforming network with high-spatial resolution to produce multiple parallel branches. Each branch transmits signal towards one direction thus it is affected by one dominant DFO when passing over the time-varying channel. Therefore, we can compensate the DFO for each branch at the transmitter previously. Theoretical analysis for the Doppler spread of the equivalent uplink channel is also conducted. It is found that when the number of transmit antennas is sufficiently large, the time-variation of channel can be efficiently suppressed. Therefore, the performance will not degrade significantly if applying the conventional time-invariant channel estimation and equalization methods at the receiver. Simulation results are provided to verify the proposed scheme.

Diffusive versus displacive contact plasticity of nanoscale asperities: Temperature- and velocity-dependent strongest size

We predict a strongest size for the contact strength when asperity radii of curvature decrease below ten nanometers. The reason for such strongest size is found to be correlated with the competition between the dislocation plasticity and surface diffusional plasticity. The essential role of temperature is calculated and illustrated in a comprehensive asperity size-strengthtemperature map taking into account the effect of contact velocity. Such a map should be essential for various phenomena related to nanoscale contacts such as nanowire cold welding, self-assembly of nanoparticles and adhesive nano-pillar arrays, as well as the electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of macroscopic interfaces.

R-Linear Convergence of Limited Memory Steepest Descent

The limited memory steepest descent method (LMSD) proposed by Fletcher is an extension of the Barzilai-Borwein "two-point step size" strategy for steepest descent methods for solving unconstrained optimization problems. It is known that the Barzilai-Borwein strategy yields a method with an R-linear rate of convergence when it is employed to minimize a strongly convex quadratic. This paper extends this analysis for LMSD, also for strongly convex quadratics. In particular, it is shown that the method is R-linearly convergent for any choice of the history length parameter. The results of numerical experiments are provided to illustrate behaviors of the method that are revealed through the theoretical analysis.

A new kind of 2D topological insulators BiCN with a giant gap and its substrate effects

Based on DFT calculation, we predict that BiCN, i.e., bilayer Bi films passivated with -CN group, is a novel 2D Bi-based material with highly thermodynamic stability, and demonstrate that it is also a new kind of 2D TI with a giant SOC gap (? 1 eV) by direct calculation of the topological invariant Z2 and obvious exhibition of the helical edge states. Monolayer h-BN and MoS2 are identified as good candidate substrates for supporting the nontrivial topological insulating phase of the 2D TI films, since the two substrates can stabilize and weakly interact with BiCN via van derWaals interaction and thus hardly affect the electronic properties, especially the band topology. The topological properties are robust against the strain and electric field. This may provide a promising platform for realization of novel topological phases.

An Adaptive Multiresoluton Discontinuous Galerkin Method for Time-Dependent Transport Equations in Multi-dimensions

In this paper, we develop an adaptive multiresolution discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for time-dependent transport equations in multi-dimensions. The method is constructed using multiwavlelets on tensorized nested grids. Adaptivity is realized by error thresholding based on the hierarchical surplus, and the Runge-Kutta DG (RKDG) scheme is employed as the reference time evolution algorithm. We show that the scheme performs similarly to a sparse grid DG method when the solution is smooth, reducing computational cost in multi-dimensions. When the solution is no longer smooth, the adaptive algorithm can automatically capture fine local structures. The method is therefore very suitable for deterministic kinetic simulations. Numerical results including several benchmark tests, the Vlasov-Poisson (VP) and oscillatory VP systems are provided.

A WENO-based Method of Line Transpose Approach for Vlasov Simulations

In this paper, a high order implicit Method of Line Transpose (MOL$^T$ ) method based on a weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) methodology is developed for one-dimensional linear transport equations and further applied to the Vlasov-Poisson (VP) simulations via dimensional splitting. In the MOL$^T$ framework, the time variable is first discretized by a diagonally implicit strong-stability-preserving Runge-Kutta method, resulting in a boundary value problem (BVP) at the discrete time levels. Then an integral formulation coupled with a high order WENO methodology is employed to solve the BVP. As a result, the proposed scheme is high order accurate in both space and time and free of oscillations even though the solution is discontinuous or has sharp gradients. Moreover, the scheme is able to take larger time step evolution compared with an explicit MOL WENO scheme with the same order of accuracy. The desired positivity-preserving (PP) property of the scheme is further attained by incorporating a newly proposed high order PP limiter. We perform numerical experiments on several benchmarks including linear advection, solid body rotation problem; and on the Landau damping, two-stream instabilities, bump-on-tail, and plasma sheath by solving the VP system. The efficacy and efficiency of the proposed scheme is numerically verified.

An Asymptotic Preserving Maxwell Solver Resulting in the Darwin Limit of Electrodynamics

In plasma simulations, where the speed of light divided by a characteristic length is at a much higher frequency than other relevant parameters in the underlying system, such as the plasma frequency, implicit methods begin to play an important role in generating efficient solutions in these multi-scale problems. Under conditions of scale separation, one can rescale Maxwell's equations in such a way as to give a magneto static limit known as the Darwin approximation of electromagnetics. In this work, we present a new approach to solve Maxwell's equations based on a Method of Lines Transpose (MOL$^T$) formulation, combined with a fast summation method with computational complexity $O(N\log{N})$, where $N$ is the number of grid points (particles). Under appropriate scaling, we show that the proposed schemes result in asymptotic preserving methods that can recover the Darwin limit of electrodynamics.

A sparse grid discontinuous Galerkin method for high-dimensional transport equations and its application to kinetic simulations

In this paper, we develop a sparse grid discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for transport equations and applied it to kinetic simulations. The method uses the weak formulations of traditional Runge-Kutta DG (RKDG) schemes for hyperbolic problems and is proven to be $L^2$ stable and convergent. A major advantage of the scheme lies in its low computational and storage cost due to the employed sparse finite element approximation space. This attractive feature is explored in simulating Vlasov and Boltzmann transport equations. Good performance in accuracy and conservation is verified by numerical tests in up to four dimensions.

Short range ordering of heavy element columns in nickel based superalloys

To obtain comprehensive performance, heavy elements were added into superalloys for solid solution hardening. In this article, it is found by scanning transmission electron microscope observation that rather than distribute randomly heavy-atom columns prefer to align along <100> and <110> direction and form a short-range ordering with the heavy-element stripes 1-2 nm in length. Due to the strong bonding strength between the refractory elements and Ni atoms, this short-range ordering will be beneficial to the mechanical performances.

Adiabatic Mach-Zehnder interferometer in dipolar spin-1 condensate

Mach-Zehnder interferometer, a powerful tool for a wide variety of measurements, has been realized with Bose-Einstein condensates in recent experiments. In this report, we propose and analyze a realizable scheme for performing a Heisenberg-limited Mach-Zehnder interferometry with dipolar spin-1 condensate. Based upon adiabatic processes of sweeping the transverse magnetic field, we demonstrate a perfect phase transition, which accomplishes the beam splitter, phase shifter and recombiner as for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The attractive dipolar interaction ensures the existence of a path-entangled state which enhances the phase measurement precision to the Heisenberg limit. We also discuss the spin-$1$ squeezing induced in the adiabatic passage and show that the squeezing parameter attains its minimal value near the point of saturation field.

Sparse Grid Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for High-Dimensional Elliptic Equations

This paper constitutes our initial effort in developing sparse grid discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for high-dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs). Over the past few decades, DG methods have gained popularity in many applications due to their distinctive features. However, they are often deemed too costly because of the large number of degrees of freedom of the approximation space, which are the main bottleneck for simulations in high dimensions. In this paper, we develop sparse grid DG methods for elliptic equations with the aim of breaking the \emph{curse of dimensionality}. Using a hierarchical basis representation, we construct a sparse finite element approximation space, reducing the degrees of freedom from the standard {$O(h^{-d})$ to $O(h^{-1}|\log_2 h|^{d-1})$} for $d$-dimensional problems, where $h$ is the uniform mesh size in each dimension. Our method, based on the interior penalty (IP) DG framework, can achieve accuracy of $O(h^{k}|\log_2 h|^{d-1})$ in the energy norm, where $k$ is the degree of polynomials used. Error estimates are provided and confirmed by numerical tests in multi-dimensions.

Spin-transfer torque induced spin waves in antiferromagnetic insulators

We explore the possibility of exciting spin waves in insulating antiferromagnetic films by injecting spin current at the surface. We analyze both magnetically compensated and uncompensated interfaces. We find that the spin current induced spin-transfer torque can excite spin waves in insulating antiferromagnetic materials and that the chirality of the excited spin wave is determined by the polarization of the injected spin current. Furthermore, the presence of magnetic surface anisotropy can greatly increase the accessibility of these excitations.

Non-Markovian dynamics of mixed-state geometric phase of dissipative qubits

We investigate the geometric phase of a two-level atom (qubit) coupled to a bosonic reservoir with Lorentzian spectral density, and find that for the non-Markovian dynamics in which rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is performed, geometric phase has a $π$-phase jump at the nodal point. However, the exact result without RWA given by hierarchy equation of motion method shows that there is no such a phase jump or nodal structure in geometric phase. Thus our results demonstrate that the counter-rotating terms significantly contribute to the geometric phase in multi-mode Hamiltonian under certain circumstances.

Visualization of the normal-fluid turbulence in counterflowing superfluid 4He

We describe a new technique, using thin lines of triplet-state He2 molecular tracers created by femtosecond-laser field-ionization of helium atoms, for visualizing the flow of the normal fluid in superfluid 4He, together with its application to thermal counterflow in a channel. We show that, at relatively small velocities, where the superfluid is already turbulent, the flow of the normal fluid remains laminar, but with a distorted velocity profile, while at a higher velocity there is a transition to turbulence. The form of the structure function in this turbulent state differs significantly from that found in types of conventional turbulence. This visualization technique also promises to be applicable to other fluid dynamical problems involving cryogenic helium.

Intrinsic magnetoresistance in metal films on ferromagnetic insulators

We predict a magnetoresistance induced by the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling in normal metal|ferromagnetic insulator bilayer. It depends on the angle between current and magnetization directions identically to the "spin Hall magnetoresistance" mechanism caused by a combined action of spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects. Due to the identical phenomenology it is not obvious whether the magnetoresistance reported by Nakayama et al. is a bulk metal or interface effect. The interfacial Rashba induced magnetoresistance may be distinguished from the bulk metal spin Hall magnetoresistance by its dependence on the metal film thickness.

Superlinear density dependence of singlet fission rate in tetracene films

We experimentally show that the rate of singlet fission in tetracene films has a superlinear dependence on the density of photo-excited singlet excitons with ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. The spectrotemporal features of singlet and triplet dynamics can be disentangled from experimental data with the algorithm of singular value decomposition. The correlation between their temporal dynamics indicates a nonlinear density dependence of fission rate, which leads to a conjecture of coherent singlet fission process arising from superradiant excitons in crystalline tetracene. This hypothesis might be able to resolve some long-standing controversies.

A High Order Time Splitting Method Based on Integral Deferred Correction for Semi-Lagrangian Vlasov Simulations

Semi-Lagrangian schemes with various splitting methods, and with different reconstruction/interpolation strategies have been applied to kinetic simulations. For example, the order of spatial accuracy of the algorithms proposed in {[Qiu and Christlieb, J. Comp. Phys., 2010]} is very high (as high as ninth order). However, the temporal error is dominated by the operator splitting error, which is second order for Strang splitting. It is therefore important to overcome such low order splitting error, in order to have numerical algorithms that achieve higher orders of accuracy in both space and time. In this paper, we propose to use the integral deferred correction (IDC) method to reduce the splitting error. Specifically, the temporal order accuracy is increased by $r$ with each correction loop in the IDC framework, where $r=1,\,2$ for coupling the first order splitting and the Strang splitting, respectively. The proposed algorithm is applied to the Vlasov-Poisson system, the guiding center model, and two dimensional incompressible flow simulations in the vorticity stream-function formulation. We show numerically that the IDC procedure can automatically increase the order of accuracy in time. We also investigate numerical stability of the proposed algorithm via performing Fourier analysis to a linear model problem.

Stability and Delay Analysis of EPON Registration Protocol

The Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) has recently emerged as the mainstream of broadband access networks. The registration process of EPON, defined by the IEEE 802.3av standard, is a multi-point control protocol (MPCP) within the media access control (MAC) layer. As with other contention-based channel access methods, such as ALOHA and CSMA, stability and delay are critical issues concerning the performances of implementing the protocol on systems with finite channel capacity. In this paper, the registration process of an EPON subscriber, called optical network units (ONUs), is modeled as a discrete-time Markov chain, from which we derive the fundamental throughput equation of EPON that characterizes the registration processes. The solutions of this characteristic equation depend on the maximum waiting time. The aim of our stability analysis is to pinpoint the region of the maximum waiting time that can guarantee a stable registration throughput and a bounded registration delay. For a maximum waiting time selected from the stable region, we obtain the expression of registration delay experienced by an ONU attempting to register. All analytic results presented in this paper were verified by simulations.
