Stationary Markov Perfect Equilibria in Discounted Stochastic Games

The existence of stationary Markov perfect equilibria in stochastic games is shown under a general condition called "(decomposable) coarser transition kernels". This result covers various earlier existence results on correlated equilibria, noisy stochastic games, stochastic games with finite actions and state-independent transitions, and stochastic games with mixtures of constant transition kernels as special cases. A remarkably simple proof is provided via establishing a new connection between stochastic games and conditional expectations of correspondences. New applications of stochastic games are presented as illustrative examples, including stochastic games with endogenous shocks and a stochastic dynamic oligopoly model.

Semi-Supervised Learning for Neural Machine Translation

While end-to-end neural machine translation (NMT) has made remarkable progress recently, NMT systems only rely on parallel corpora for parameter estimation. Since parallel corpora are usually limited in quantity, quality, and coverage, especially for low-resource languages, it is appealing to exploit monolingual corpora to improve NMT. We propose a semi-supervised approach for training NMT models on the concatenation of labeled (parallel corpora) and unlabeled (monolingual corpora) data. The central idea is to reconstruct the monolingual corpora using an autoencoder, in which the source-to-target and target-to-source translation models serve as the encoder and decoder, respectively. Our approach can not only exploit the monolingual corpora of the target language, but also of the source language. Experiments on the Chinese-English dataset show that our approach achieves significant improvements over state-of-the-art SMT and NMT systems.

Chinese Poetry Generation with Planning based Neural Network

Chinese poetry generation is a very challenging task in natural language processing. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage poetry generating method which first plans the sub-topics of the poem according to the user's writing intent, and then generates each line of the poem sequentially, using a modified recurrent neural network encoder-decoder framework. The proposed planning-based method can ensure that the generated poem is coherent and semantically consistent with the user's intent. A comprehensive evaluation with human judgments demonstrates that our proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art poetry generating methods and the poem quality is somehow comparable to human poets.

Minimum Risk Training for Neural Machine Translation

We propose minimum risk training for end-to-end neural machine translation. Unlike conventional maximum likelihood estimation, minimum risk training is capable of optimizing model parameters directly with respect to arbitrary evaluation metrics, which are not necessarily differentiable. Experiments show that our approach achieves significant improvements over maximum likelihood estimation on a state-of-the-art neural machine translation system across various languages pairs. Transparent to architectures, our approach can be applied to more neural networks and potentially benefit more NLP tasks.

Agreement-based Joint Training for Bidirectional Attention-based Neural Machine Translation

The attentional mechanism has proven to be effective in improving end-to-end neural machine translation. However, due to the intricate structural divergence between natural languages, unidirectional attention-based models might only capture partial aspects of attentional regularities. We propose agreement-based joint training for bidirectional attention-based end-to-end neural machine translation. Instead of training source-to-target and target-to-source translation models independently, our approach encourages the two complementary models to agree on word alignment matrices on the same training data. Experiments on Chinese-English and English-French translation tasks show that agreement-based joint training significantly improves both alignment and translation quality over independent training.

Role-based Label Propagation Algorithm for Community Detection

Community structure of networks provides comprehensive insight into their organizational structure and functional behavior. LPA is one of the most commonly adopted community detection algorithms with nearly linear time complexity. But it suffers from poor stability and occurrence of monster community due to the introduced randomize. We note that different community-oriented node roles impact the label propagation in different ways. In this paper, we propose a role-based label propagation algorithm (roLPA), in which the heuristics with regard to community-oriented node role were used. We have evaluated the proposed algorithm on both real and artificial networks. The result shows that roLPA is comparable to the state-of-the-art community detection algorithms.

A Pair of Giant Planets around the Evolved Intermediate-Mass Star HD 47366: Multiple Circular Orbits or a Mutually Retrograde Configuration

We report the detection of a double planetary system around the evolved intermediate-mass star HD 47366 from precise radial-velocity measurements at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, Xinglong Station, and Australian Astronomical Observatory. The star is a K1 giant with a mass of 1.81+-0.13M_sun, a radius of 7.30+-0.33R_sun, and solar metallicity. The planetary system is composed of two giant planets with minimum mass of 1.75^{+0.20}_{-0.17}Mjup and 1.86^{+0.16}_{-0.15}Mjup, orbital period of 363.3^{+2.5}_{-2.4} d and 684.7^{+5.0}_{-4.9} d, and eccentricity of 0.089^{+0.079}_{-0.060} and 0.278^{+0.067}_{-0.094}, respectively, which are derived by a double Keplerian orbital fit to the radial-velocity data. The system adds to the population of multi-giant-planet systems with relatively small orbital separations, which are preferentially found around evolved intermediate-mass stars. Dynamical stability analysis for the system revealed, however, that the best-fit orbits are unstable in the case of a prograde configuration. The system could be stable if the planets were in 2:1 mean-motion resonance, but this is less likely considering the observed period ratio and eccentricity. A present possible scenario for the system is that both of the planets have nearly circular orbits, namely the eccentricity of the outer planet is less than ~0.15, which is just within 1.4sigma of the best-fit value, or the planets are in a mutually retrograde configuration with a mutual orbital inclination larger than 160 degree.

Categorically proper homomorphisms of topological groups

We extend the Dikranjan-Uspenskij notions of c-compact and h-complete topological group to the morphism level, study the stability properties of the newly defined types of maps, such as closure under direct products, and compare them with their counterparts in topology. We assume Hausdorffness only when our proofs require us to do so, which leads to new results and the affirmation of some facts that were known in a Hausdorff context.

Combinatorial approach to Mathieu and Lamé equations

Based on some recent progress on a relation between four dimensional super Yang-Mills gauge theory and quantum integrable system, we study the asymptotic spectrum of the quantum mechanical problems described by the Mathieu equation and the Lamé equation. The large momentum asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue is related to the instanton partition function of supersymmetric gauge theories which can be evaluated by a combinatorial method. The electro-magnetic duality of gauge theory indicates that in the parameter space there are three asymptotic expansions for the eigenvalue, we confirm this fact by performing the WKB analysis in each asymptotic expansion region. The results presented here give some new perspective on the Floquet theory about periodic differential equation.

Partially Ordered Sheaves on a Locale. I (II)

In this paper, we investigate the order algebraic structure in the category of sheaves on a given locale $X$. Since every localic topos has a generating set formed by its subterminal objects, we define a "point" of a partially ordered sheaf to be a morphism from a subterminal sheaf to the partially ordered sheaf. Using the concept of "points," we investigate the completeness of posheaves systemically. Some internal characterizations of complete partially ordered sheaves and frame sheaves are given. We also give an explicit description of the construction of associated sheaf locales and show directly that the category $Sh(X)$ of sheaves on a locale $X$ is equivalent to the slice category $LH/X$ of locales and local homeomorphisms over $X$. Applying this equivalence, we give characterizations of partially ordered sheaves and complete partially ordered sheaves in terms of sheaf locale respectively. This paper is a continuation of our paper [1]. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of directed complete partially ordered sheaves (shortly dcposheaves) on a given locale. some internal characterizations of dcposheaves and meet continuous dcposheaves are given respectively. We also give characterizations of continuous posheaves and completely distributive posheaves, and show that an algebraic completely distributive posheaf is spatial.

A New Logic For Uncertainty

Fuzziness and randomicity widespread exist in natural science, engineering, technology and social science. The purpose of this paper is to present a new logic - uncertain propositional logic which can deal with both fuzziness by taking truth value semantics and randomicity by taking probabilistic semantics or possibility semantics. As the first step for purpose of establishing a logic system which completely reflect the uncertainty of the objective world, this logic will lead to a set of logical foundations for uncertainty theory as what classical logic done in certain or definite situations or circumstances.

Dynamic Games with Almost Perfect Information

This paper aims to solve two fundamental problems on finite or infinite horizon dynamic games with perfect or almost perfect information. Under some mild conditions, we prove (1) the existence of subgame-perfect equilibria in general dynamic games with almost perfect information, and (2) the existence of pure-strategy subgame-perfect equilibria in perfect-information dynamic games with uncertainty. Our results go beyond previous works on continuous dynamic games in the sense that public randomization and the continuity requirement on the state variables are not needed. As an illustrative application, a dynamic stochastic oligopoly market with intertemporally dependent payoffs is considered.

Quasimodular instanton partition function and the elliptic solution of Korteweg-de Vries equations

The Gauge/Bethe correspondence relates Omega-deformed N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories to some quantum integrable models, in simple cases the integrable models can be treated as solvable quantum mechanics models. For SU(2) gauge theory with an adjoint matter, or with 4 fundamental matters, the potential of corresponding quantum model is the elliptic function. If the mass of matter takes special value then the potential is an elliptic solution of KdV hierarchy. We show that the deformed prepotential of gauge theory can be obtained from the average densities of conserved charges of the classical KdV solution, the UV gauge coupling dependence is assembled into the Eisenstein series. The gauge theory with adjoint mass is taken as the example.

N=2 supersymmetric QCD and elliptic potentials

We investigate the relation between the four dimensional N=2 SU(2) super Yang-Mills theory with four fundamental flavors and the quantum mechanics model with Treibich-Verdier potential described by the Heun equation in the elliptic form. We study the precise correspondence of quantities in the gauge theory and the quantum mechanics model. An iterative method is used to obtain the asymptotic expansion of the spectrum for the Schrödinger operator, we are able to fix the precise relation between the energy spectrum and the instanton partition function of the gauge theory. We also study asymptotic expansions for the spectrum which correspond to the strong coupling regions of the Seiberg-Witten theory.

High resolution deep imaging of a bright radio quiet QSO at z~3

We have obtained deep J & Ks-band images centered on a bright radio quiet QSO UM402 (z_{em}=2.856) using IRCS camera and AO systems on Subaru Telescope, as well as retrieved WFC3/F140W archive images. A faint galaxy (m_{k}=23.32 +/- 0.05 in the Vega system) that lies ~ 2.4" north of the QSO sightline has been clearly resolved in all three deep high resolution datasets, and appears as an irregular galaxy with two close components in the Ks-band images (separation ~ 0.3"). Given the small impact parameter (b=19.6 kpc, at z_{lls}=2.531), as well as the red color of (J-Ks)_{vega} ~ 1.6, it might be a candidate galaxy giving rise to the Lyman Limit system absorption at z_{abs}=2.531 seen in the QSO spectrum. After carefully subtracting the PSF from the QSO images, the host galaxy of this bright radio quiet QSO at z ~ 3 was marginally revealled. We placed a low limit of the host component of m_{k} ~ 23.3 according to our analyses.

A Long-period Eccentric Substellar Companion to the Evovled Intermediate-Mass Star HD 14067

We report the detection of a substellar companion orbiting an evolved intermediate-mass ($M_\star=2.4\,M_\odot$) star HD 14067 (G9 III) using precise Doppler technique. Radial velocities of this star can be well fitted either by a periodic Keplerian variation with a decreasing linear velocity trend (P=1455 days, $K_1=92.2$ m s$^{-1}$, $e=0.533$, and $\dotγ=-22.4$ m s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$) or a single Keplerian orbit without linear trend (P=2850 days, $K_1=100.1$ m s$^{-1}$, and $e=0.697$). The minimum mass ($m_2\sin{i}=7.8\,M_{\rm J}$ for the model with a linear trend, or $m_2\sin{i}=9.0\,M_{\rm J}$ for the model without a linear trend) suggests a long-period giant planet around an evolved intermediate-mass star. The eccentricity of the orbit is among the highest known for planets ever detected around evolved stars.

Manual Calibration System for Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment

The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured the last unknown neutrino mixing angle, θ13, to be non-zero at the 7.7σ level. This is the most precise measurement to θ13 to date. To further enhance the understanding of the response of the antineutrino detectors (ADs), a detailed calibration of an AD with the Manual Calibration System (MCS) was undertaken during the summer 2012 shutdown. The MCS is capable of placing a radioactive source with a positional accuracy of 25 mm in R direction, 20 mm in Z axis and 0.5° in Φ direction. A detailed description of the MCS is presented followed by a summary of its performance in the AD calibration run.
