Initial Beamforming for Millimeter-Wave and Terahertz Communications in 6G Mobile Systems

To meet the demand of supreme data rates in terabits-per-second, the next-generation mobile system needs to exploit the abundant spectrum in the millimeter-wave and terahertz bands. However, high-frequency transmission heavily relies on large-scale antenna arrays to reap high beamforming gain, used to compensate for severe propagation loss. It raises a problem of omni-directional beamforming during the phase of initial access, where a base station is required to broadcast synchronization signals and system information to all users within its coverage. This paper proposes a novel initial beamforming scheme, which provides instantaneous gain equally in all directions by forming a pair of complementary beams. Numerical results verify that it can achieve omni-directional coverage with the optimal performance that remarkably outperforms the previous scheme called random beamforming. It is applicable for any form of large-scale arrays, and all three architecture, i.e., digital, analog, and hybrid beamforming.

Smoothed Online Convex Optimization Based on Discounted-Normal-Predictor

In this paper, we investigate an online prediction strategy named as Discounted-Normal-Predictor (Kapralov and Panigrahy, 2010) for smoothed online convex optimization (SOCO), in which the learner needs to minimize not only the hitting cost but also the switching cost. In the setting of learning with expert advice, Daniely and Mansour (2019) demonstrate that Discounted-Normal-Predictor can be utilized to yield nearly optimal regret bounds over any interval, even in the presence of switching costs. Inspired by their results, we develop a simple algorithm for SOCO: Combining online gradient descent (OGD) with different step sizes sequentially by Discounted-Normal-Predictor. Despite its simplicity, we prove that it is able to minimize the adaptive regret with switching cost, i.e., attaining nearly optimal regret with switching cost on every interval. By exploiting the theoretical guarantee of OGD for dynamic regret, we further show that the proposed algorithm can minimize the dynamic regret with switching cost in every interval.

Initial Access for Millimeter-Wave and Terahertz Communications with Hybrid Beamforming

In order to achieve terabits-per-second (Tbps) data rates in the sixth-generation (6G) mobile system, wireless communications are required to exploit the abundant spectrum in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) bands. However, high-frequency transmission heavily relies on high beamforming gain to compensate for severe propagation loss. A beam-based system faces a barrier in the process of initial access, where a base station must broadcast synchronization signals and system information to all users within its coverage. Hence, this paper proposes a novel omnidirectional broadcasting scheme for mmWave and THz systems with hybrid beamforming. It provides an instantaneously equal gain over all directions by forming complementary beams over sub-arrays. Numerical results verify that it can achieve omnidirectional coverage with a performance that remarkably outperforms the previous scheme.

Dual-Beam Intelligent Reflecting Surface for Millimeter and THz Communications

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a cost-efficient technique to improve power efficiency and spectral efficiency. However, IRS-aided multi-antenna transmission needs to jointly optimize the passive and active beamforming, imposing a high computational burden and high latency due to its iterative optimization process. Making use of hybrid analog-digital beamforming in high-frequency transmission systems, a novel technique, coined dual-beam IRS, is proposed in this paper. The key idea is to form a pair of beams towards the IRS and user, respectively. Then, the optimization of passive and active beamforming can be decoupled, resulting in a simplified system design. Simulation results corroborate that it achieves a good balance between the cell-edge and cell-center performance. Compared with the performance bound, the gap is moderate, but it remarkably outperforms other sub-optimal schemes.

Opportunistic AP Selection in Cell-Free Massive MIMO-OFDM Systems

Exploiting the degree of freedom in the frequency domain and the near-far effect among different access points (APs), this paper proposes an opportunistic transmission scheme in cell-free massive MIMO-OFDM systems. The key idea is to orthogonally assign subcarriers among different users, so that there is only one user on each subcarrier. Then, a user is only served by its near APs through opportunistic selection, while the far APs are deactivated to avoid wasting power over their channels with severe propagation losses. Moreover, the number of active APs per subcarrier becomes small due to the opportunistic selection, making the use of downlink pilots and coherent detection feasible. As corroborated by numerical results, the proposed scheme can bring a significant performance boost in terms of both power efficiency and spectral efficiency.

Towards Homogeneous Modality Learning and Multi-Granularity Information Exploration for Visible-Infrared Person Re-Identification

Visible-infrared person re-identification (VI-ReID) is a challenging and essential task, which aims to retrieve a set of person images over visible and infrared camera views. In order to mitigate the impact of large modality discrepancy existing in heterogeneous images, previous methods attempt to apply generative adversarial network (GAN) to generate the modality-consisitent data. However, due to severe color variations between the visible domain and infrared domain, the generated fake cross-modality samples often fail to possess good qualities to fill the modality gap between synthesized scenarios and target real ones, which leads to sub-optimal feature representations. In this work, we address cross-modality matching problem with Aligned Grayscale Modality (AGM), an unified dark-line spectrum that reformulates visible-infrared dual-mode learning as a gray-gray single-mode learning problem. Specifically, we generate the grasycale modality from the homogeneous visible images. Then, we train a style tranfer model to transfer infrared images into homogeneous grayscale images. In this way, the modality discrepancy is significantly reduced in the image space. In order to reduce the remaining appearance discrepancy, we further introduce a multi-granularity feature extraction network to conduct feature-level alignment. Rather than relying on the global information, we propose to exploit local (head-shoulder) features to assist person Re-ID, which complements each other to form a stronger feature descriptor. Comprehensive experiments implemented on the mainstream evaluation datasets include SYSU-MM01 and RegDB indicate that our method can significantly boost cross-modality retrieval performance against the state of the art methods.

Inventory of high-quality flat-band van der Waals materials

More is left to do in the field of flat bands besides proposing theoretical models. One unexplored area is the flat bands featured in the van der Waals (vdW) materials. Exploring more flat-band material candidates and moving the promising materials toward applications have been well recognized as the cornerstones for the next-generation high-efficiency devices. Here, we utilize a powerful high-throughput tool to screen desired vdW materials based on the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database. Through layers of filtration, we obtained 861 potential monolayers from 4997 vdW materials. Significantly, it is the first example to introduce flat-band electronic properties in the vdW materials and propose three families of representative flat-band materials by mapping two-dimensional (2D) flat-band lattice models. Unlike existing screening schemes, a simple, universal rule, i.e., 2D flat-band score criterion, is first proposed to efficiently identify 229 high-quality flat-band candidates, and guidance is provided to diagnose the quality of 2D flat bands. All these efforts to screen experimental available flat-band candidates will certainly motivate continuing exploration towards the realization of this class of special materials and their applications in material science.

Training Time Minimization for Federated Edge Learning with Optimized Gradient Quantization and Bandwidth Allocation

Training a machine learning model with federated edge learning (FEEL) is typically time-consuming due to the constrained computation power of edge devices and limited wireless resources in edge networks. In this paper, the training time minimization problem is investigated in a quantized FEEL system, where the heterogeneous edge devices send quantized gradients to the edge server via orthogonal channels. In particular, a stochastic quantization scheme is adopted for compression of uploaded gradients, which can reduce the burden of per-round communication but may come at the cost of increasing number of communication rounds. The training time is modeled by taking into account the communication time, computation time and the number of communication rounds. Based on the proposed training time model, the intrinsic trade-off between the number of communication rounds and per-round latency is characterized. Specifically, we analyze the convergence behavior of the quantized FEEL in terms of the optimality gap. Further, a joint data-and-model-driven fitting method is proposed to obtain the exact optimality gap, based on which the closed-form expressions for the number of communication rounds and the total training time are obtained. Constrained by total bandwidth, the training time minimization problem is formulated as a joint quantization level and bandwidth allocation optimization problem. To this end, an algorithm based on alternating optimization is proposed, which alternatively solves the subproblem of quantization optimization via successive convex approximation and the subproblem of bandwidth allocation via bisection search. With different learning tasks and models, the validation of our analysis and the near-optimal performance of the proposed optimization algorithm are demonstrated by the experimental results.

Fast Data-Driven Adaptation of Radar Detection via Meta-Learning

This paper addresses the problem of fast learning of radar detectors with a limited amount of training data. In current data-driven approaches for radar detection, re-training is generally required when the operating environment changes, incurring large overhead in terms of data collection and training time. In contrast, this paper proposes two novel deep learning-based approaches that enable fast adaptation of detectors based on few data samples from a new environment. The proposed methods integrate prior knowledge regarding previously encountered radar operating environments in two different ways. One approach is based on transfer learning: it first pre-trains a detector such that it works well on data collected in previously observed environments, and then it adapts the pre-trained detector to the specific current environment. The other approach targets explicitly few-shot training via meta-learning: based on data from previous environments, it finds a common initialization that enables fast adaptation to a new environment. Numerical results validate the benefits of the proposed two approaches compared with the conventional method based on training with no prior knowledge. Furthermore, the meta-learning-based detector outperforms the transfer learning-based detector when the clutter is Gaussian.

Online Meta Adaptation for Variable-Rate Learned Image Compression

This work addresses two major issues of end-to-end learned image compression (LIC) based on deep neural networks: variable-rate learning where separate networks are required to generate compressed images with varying qualities, and the train-test mismatch between differentiable approximate quantization and true hard quantization. We introduce an online meta-learning (OML) setting for LIC, which combines ideas from meta learning and online learning in the conditional variational auto-encoder (CVAE) framework. By treating the conditional variables as meta parameters and treating the generated conditional features as meta priors, the desired reconstruction can be controlled by the meta parameters to accommodate compression with variable qualities. The online learning framework is used to update the meta parameters so that the conditional reconstruction is adaptively tuned for the current image. Through the OML mechanism, the meta parameters can be effectively updated through SGD. The conditional reconstruction is directly based on the quantized latent representation in the decoder network, and therefore helps to bridge the gap between the training estimation and true quantized latent distribution. Experiments demonstrate that our OML approach can be flexibly applied to different state-of-the-art LIC methods to achieve additional performance improvements with little computation and transmission overhead.

ZrTe2/CrTe2: an epitaxial van der Waals platform for spintronics

The rapid discovery of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) quantum materials has led to heterostructures that integrate diverse quantum functionalities such as topological phases, magnetism, and superconductivity. In this context, the epitaxial synthesis of vdW heterostructures with well-controlled interfaces is an attractive route towards wafer-scale platforms for systematically exploring fundamental properties and fashioning proof-of-concept devices. Here, we use molecular beam epitaxy to synthesize a vdW heterostructure that interfaces two material systems of contemporary interest: a 2D ferromagnet (1T-CrTe2) and a topological semimetal (ZrTe2). We find that one unit-cell (u.c.) thick 1T-CrTe2 grown epitaxially on ZrTe2 is a 2D ferromagnet with a clear anomalous Hall effect. In thicker samples (12 u.c. thick CrTe2), the anomalous Hall effect has characteristics that may arise from real-space Berry curvature. Finally, in ultrathin CrTe2 (3 u.c. thickness), we demonstrate current-driven magnetization switching in a full vdW topological semimetal/2D ferromagnet heterostructure device.

Optimal gamma-ray selections for monochromatic line searches with DAMPE

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space high-energy cosmic-ray detector covering a wide energy band with a high energy resolution. One of the key scientific goals of DAMPE is to carry out indirect detection of dark matter by searching for high-energy gamma-ray line structure. To promote the sensitivity of gamma-ray line search with DAMPE, it is crucial to improve the acceptance and energy resolution of gamma-ray photons. In this paper, we quantitatively prove that the photon sample with the largest ratio of acceptance to energy resolution is optimal for line search. We therefore develop a line-search sample specifically optimized for the line search. Meanwhile, in order to increase the statistics, we also selected the so called BGO-only photons that convert into $e^+e^-$ pairs only in the BGO calorimeter. The standard, the line-search, and the BGO-only photon samples are then tested for line search individually and collectively. The results show that a significantly improved limit could be obtained from an appropriate combination of the date sets, and the increase is about 20\% for the highest case compared with using the standard sample only.

Reinforcement Learning for Process Control with Application in Semiconductor Manufacturing

Process control is widely discussed in the manufacturing process, especially for semiconductor manufacturing. Due to unavoidable disturbances in manufacturing, different process controllers are proposed to realize variation reduction. Since reinforcement learning (RL) has shown great advantages in learning actions from interactions with a dynamic system, we introduce RL methods for process control and propose a new controller called RL-based controller. Considering the fact that most existing process controllers mainly rely on a linear model assumption for the process input-output relationship, we first propose theoretical properties of RL-based controllers according to the linear model assumption. Then the performance of RL-based controllers and traditional process controllers (e.g., exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA), general harmonic rule (GHR) controllers) are compared for linear processes. Furthermore, we find that the RL-based controllers have potential advantages to deal with other complicated nonlinear processes that are with and without assumed explicit model formulations. The intensive numerical studies validate the advantages of the proposed RL-based controllers.

A Two-stage Pricing Strategy Considering Learning Effects and Word-of-Mouth

This paper proposes a two-stage pricing strategy for nondurable (such as typical electronics) products, where retail price is cut down at certain time points of the product lifecycle. We consider learning effect of electronic products that, with the accumulation of production, average production cost decreases over time as manufacturers get familiar with the production process. Moreover, word-of-mouth (WOM) of existing customers is used to analyze future demand, which is sensitive to the difference between the actual reliability and the perceived reliability of products. We theoretically prove the existence and uniqueness of the optimal switch time between the two stages and the optimal price in each stage. In addition, warranty as another important factor of electronic products is also considered, whose interaction with word-of-mouth as well as the corresponding influences on total profit are analyzed. Interestingly, our findings indicate that (1) the main reason for manufacturers to cut down prices for electronic products pertains to the learning effects; (2) even through both internal factors (e.g., the learning effects of manufacturers) and external factors (e.g., the price elasticity of customers) have impacts on product price, their influence on manufacturer's profit is widely divergent; (3) generally warranty weakens the influence of external advertising on the reliability estimate, because warranty price only partially reflects the actual reliability information of products; (4) and the optimal warranty price can increase the profits for the manufacturer by approximately 10%.

Fully Distributed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers in Digraphs via Finite-Time Termination Mechanisms

In this work, we consider the distributed optimization problem in which each node has its own convex cost function and can communicate directly only with its neighbors, as determined by a directed communication topology (directed graph or digraph). First, we reformulate the optimization problem so that Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) can be utilized. Then, we propose an algorithm, herein called Distributed Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers using Finite-Time Exact Ratio Consensus (D-ADMM-FTERC), to solve the multi-node convex optimization problem, in which every node performs iterative computations and exchanges information with its neighbors. At every iteration of D-ADMM-FTERC, each node solves a local convex optimization problem for the one of the primal variables and utilizes a finite-time exact consensus protocol to obtain the optimal value of the other variable, since the cost function for the second primal variable is not decomposable. Since D-ADMM-FTERC requires to know the upper bound on the number of nodes in the network, we furthermore propose a new algorithm, called Fully D-ADMM Finite-Time Distributed Termination (FD-ADMM-FTDT) algorithm, which does not need any global information. If the individual cost functions are convex and not-necessarily differentiable, the proposed algorithms converge at a rate of O(1/k), where k is the iteration counter. Additionally, if the global objective function is strongly convex and smooth, the proposed algorithms have an "approximate" R-linear convergence rate. The efficacy of FD-ADMM-FTDT is demonstrated via a distributed L1 regularized logistic regression optimization example. Additionally, comparisons with other state-of-the-art algorithms are provided on large-scale networks showing the superior precision and time-efficient performance of FD-ADMM-FTDT.

Observations of Forbush Decreases of cosmic ray electrons and positrons with the Dark Matter Particle Explorer

The Forbush Decrease (FD) represents the rapid decrease of the intensities of charged particles accompanied with the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) or high-speed streams from coronal holes. It has been mainly explored with ground-based neutron monitors network which indirectly measure the integrated intensities of all species of cosmic rays by counting secondary neutrons produced from interaction between atmosphere atoms and cosmic rays. The space-based experiments can resolve the species of particles but the energy ranges are limited by the relative small acceptances except for the most abundant particles like protons and helium. Therefore, the FD of cosmic ray electrons and positrons have just been investigated by the PAMELA experiment in the low energy range ($<5$ GeV) with limited statistics. In this paper, we study the FD event occurred in September, 2017, with the electron and positron data recorded by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer. The evolution of the FDs from 2 GeV to 20 GeV with a time resolution of 6 hours are given. We observe two solar energetic particle events in the time profile of the intensity of cosmic rays, the earlier and weak one has not been shown in the neutron monitor data. Furthermore, both the amplitude and recovery time of fluxes of electrons and positrons show clear energy-dependence, which is important in probing the disturbances of the interplanetary environment by the coronal mass ejections.

Bipolar electric field switching of perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions through voltage controlled exchange coupling

Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJs) switched utilizing bipolar electric fields have extensive applications in energy-efficient memory and logic devices. Voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy linearly lowers the energy barrier of ferromagnetic layer via electric field effect and efficiently switches p-MTJs only with a unipolar behavior. Here we demonstrate a bipolar electric field effect switching of 100-nm p-MTJs with a synthetic antiferromagnetic free layer through voltage-controlled exchange coupling (VCEC). The switching current density, ~1.1x10^5 A/cm^2, is one order of magnitude lower than that of the best-reported spin-transfer torque devices. Theoretical results suggest that electric field induces a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic exchange coupling transition of the synthetic antiferromagnetic free layer and generates a field-like interlayer exchange coupling torque, which cause the bidirectional magnetization switching of p-MTJs. A preliminary benchmarking simulation estimates that VCEC dissipates an order of magnitude lower writing energy compared to spin-transfer torque at the 15-nm technology node. These results could eliminate the major obstacle in the development of spin memory devices beyond their embedded applications.
