Robust Quantum Griffiths Singularity at above 1.5 Kelvin in Nitride Thin Films

Quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS), which is closely correlated with the quenched disorder, is characterized by the divergence of the dynamical critical exponent and the presence of activated scaling behavior. Typically such a quantum phenomenon is rather rare and only observed in extremely low temperatures. Here we report the experimental observation of a robust QGS in nitride thin films, NbN, which survives in a rather high temperature range. The electrical transport propertied were measured under the magnetic field up to 12 T. The field induced superconductor-metal transitions were observed with the continuously changed transition points with the decrease of temperature. The dynamical critical exponent based on the conventional power-law scaling reveals a divergent trend when approaching the the low temperature limit. Moreover, the temperature and field dependence of sheet resistance can be described by the activated scaling analysis in the temperature region up to 1.6 K $\leq T \leq$ 4.0 K. We argue that the robustness of QGS in the present system originates from the Pauli paramagnetic effect due to the strong coupling between the magnetic field and the spin degree of freedom.

SJ-HD^2R: Selective Joint High Dynamic Range and Denoising Imaging for Dynamic Scenes

Ghosting artifacts, motion blur, and low fidelity in highlight are the main challenges in High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging from multiple Low Dynamic Range (LDR) images. These issues come from using the medium-exposed image as the reference frame in previous methods. To deal with them, we propose to use the under-exposed image as the reference to avoid these issues. However, the heavy noise in dark regions of the under-exposed image becomes a new problem. Therefore, we propose a joint HDR and denoising pipeline, containing two sub-networks: (i) a pre-denoising network (PreDNNet) to adaptively denoise input LDRs by exploiting exposure priors; (ii) a pyramid cascading fusion network (PCFNet), introducing an attention mechanism and cascading structure in a multi-scale manner. To further leverage these two paradigms, we propose a selective and joint HDR and denoising (SJ-HD$^2$R) imaging framework, utilizing scenario-specific priors to conduct the path selection with an accuracy of more than 93.3$\%$. We create the first joint HDR and denoising benchmark dataset, which contains a variety of challenging HDR and denoising scenes and supports the switching of the reference image. Extensive experiment results show that our method achieves superior performance to previous methods.

UPainting: Unified Text-to-Image Diffusion Generation with Cross-modal Guidance

Diffusion generative models have recently greatly improved the power of text-conditioned image generation. Existing image generation models mainly include text conditional diffusion model and cross-modal guided diffusion model, which are good at small scene image generation and complex scene image generation respectively. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective approach, namely UPainting, to unify simple and complex scene image generation, as shown in Figure 1. Based on architecture improvements and diverse guidance schedules, UPainting effectively integrates cross-modal guidance from a pretrained image-text matching model into a text conditional diffusion model that utilizes a pretrained Transformer language model as the text encoder. Our key findings is that combining the power of large-scale Transformer language model in understanding language and image-text matching model in capturing cross-modal semantics and style, is effective to improve sample fidelity and image-text alignment of image generation. In this way, UPainting has a more general image generation capability, which can generate images of both simple and complex scenes more effectively. To comprehensively compare text-to-image models, we further create a more general benchmark, UniBench, with well-written Chinese and English prompts in both simple and complex scenes. We compare UPainting with recent models and find that UPainting greatly outperforms other models in terms of caption similarity and image fidelity in both simple and complex scenes. High-field quantum spin liquid transitions and angle-field phase diagram of Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

The pursuit of quantum spin liquid (QSL) in the Kitaev honeycomb magnets has drawn intensive attention recently. In particular, $α$-RuCl$_3$ has been widely recognized as a promising candidate for the Kitaev QSL. Although the compound exhibits an antiferromagnetic order under zero field, it is believed to be endowed with fractionalized excitations, and can be driven to the QSL phase by magnetic fields. Here, based on a realistic $K$-$J$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ model for $α$-RuCl$_3$ [1], we exploit the exponential tensor renormalization group approach to explore the phase diagram of the compound under magnetic fields. We calculate the thermodynamic quantities, including the specific heat, Grüneisen parameter, magnetic torque, and the magnetotropic susceptibility, etc, under a magnetic field with a tilting angle $θ$ to the $c^*$-axis perpendicular to the honeycomb plane. We find an extended QSL in the angle-field phase diagram determined with thermodynamic responses. The gapless nature of such field-induced QSL is identified from the specific heat and entropy data computed down to very low temperatures. The present study provides guidance for future high-field experiments for the QSL in $α$-RuCl$_3$ and other candidate Kitaev magnets.

A Data-driven Case-based Reasoning in Bankruptcy Prediction

There has been intensive research regarding machine learning models for predicting bankruptcy in recent years. However, the lack of interpretability limits their growth and practical implementation. This study proposes a data-driven explainable case-based reasoning (CBR) system for bankruptcy prediction. Empirical results from a comparative study show that the proposed approach performs superior to existing, alternative CBR systems and is competitive with state-of-the-art machine learning models. We also demonstrate that the asymmetrical feature similarity comparison mechanism in the proposed CBR system can effectively capture the asymmetrically distributed nature of financial attributes, such as a few companies controlling more cash than the majority, hence improving both the accuracy and explainability of predictions. In addition, we delicately examine the explainability of the CBR system in the decision-making process of bankruptcy prediction. While much research suggests a trade-off between improving prediction accuracy and explainability, our findings show a prospective research avenue in which an explainable model that thoroughly incorporates data attributes by design can reconcile the dilemma.

FRSUM: Towards Faithful Abstractive Summarization via Enhancing Factual Robustness

Despite being able to generate fluent and grammatical text, current Seq2Seq summarization models still suffering from the unfaithful generation problem. In this paper, we study the faithfulness of existing systems from a new perspective of factual robustness which is the ability to correctly generate factual information over adversarial unfaithful information. We first measure a model's factual robustness by its success rate to defend against adversarial attacks when generating factual information. The factual robustness analysis on a wide range of current systems shows its good consistency with human judgments on faithfulness. Inspired by these findings, we propose to improve the faithfulness of a model by enhancing its factual robustness. Specifically, we propose a novel training strategy, namely FRSUM, which teaches the model to defend against both explicit adversarial samples and implicit factual adversarial perturbations. Extensive automatic and human evaluation results show that FRSUM consistently improves the faithfulness of various Seq2Seq models, such as T5, BART.

Estimation and inference for high-dimensional nonparametric additive instrumental-variables regression

The method of instrumental variables provides a fundamental and practical tool for causal inference in many empirical studies where unmeasured confounding between the treatments and the outcome is present. Modern data such as the genetical genomics data from these studies are often high-dimensional. The high-dimensional linear instrumental-variables regression has been considered in the literature due to its simplicity albeit a true nonlinear relationship may exist. We propose a more data-driven approach by considering the nonparametric additive models between the instruments and the treatments while keeping a linear model between the treatments and the outcome so that the coefficients therein can directly bear causal interpretation. We provide a two-stage framework for estimation and inference under this more general setup. The group lasso regularization is first employed to select optimal instruments from the high-dimensional additive models, and the outcome variable is then regressed on the fitted values from the additive models to identify and estimate important treatment effects. We provide non-asymptotic analysis of the estimation error of the proposed estimator. A debiasing procedure is further employed to yield valid inference. Extensive numerical experiments show that our method can rival or outperform existing approaches in the literature. We finally analyze the mouse obesity data and discuss new findings from our method.

Precisely the Point: Adversarial Augmentations for Faithful and Informative Text Generation

Though model robustness has been extensively studied in language understanding, the robustness of Seq2Seq generation remains understudied. In this paper, we conduct the first quantitative analysis on the robustness of pre-trained Seq2Seq models. We find that even current SOTA pre-trained Seq2Seq model (BART) is still vulnerable, which leads to significant degeneration in faithfulness and informativeness for text generation tasks. This motivated us to further propose a novel adversarial augmentation framework, namely AdvSeq, for generally improving faithfulness and informativeness of Seq2Seq models via enhancing their robustness. AdvSeq automatically constructs two types of adversarial augmentations during training, including implicit adversarial samples by perturbing word representations and explicit adversarial samples by word swapping, both of which effectively improve Seq2Seq robustness. Extensive experiments on three popular text generation tasks demonstrate that AdvSeq significantly improves both the faithfulness and informativeness of Seq2Seq generation under both automatic and human evaluation settings.

Robot Navigation with Reinforcement Learned Path Generation and Fine-Tuned Motion Control

In this paper, we propose a novel reinforcement learning (RL) based path generation (RL-PG) approach for mobile robot navigation without a prior exploration of an unknown environment. Multiple predictive path points are dynamically generated by a deep Markov model optimized using RL approach for robot to track. To ensure the safety when tracking the predictive points, the robot's motion is fine-tuned by a motion fine-tuning module. Such an approach, using the deep Markov model with RL algorithm for planning, focuses on the relationship between adjacent path points. We analyze the benefits that our proposed approach are more effective and are with higher success rate than RL-Based approach DWA-RL and a traditional navigation approach APF. We deploy our model on both simulation and physical platforms and demonstrate our model performs robot navigation effectively and safely.

RoleSeer: Understanding Informal Social Role Changes in MMORPGs via Visual Analytics

Massively multiplayer online role-playing games create virtual communities that support heterogeneous "social roles" determined by gameplay interaction behaviors under a specific social context. For all social roles, formal roles are pre-defined, obvious, and explicitly ascribed to the people holding the roles, whereas informal roles are not well-defined and unspoken. Identifying the informal roles and understanding their subtle changes are critical to designing sociability mechanisms. However, it is nontrivial to understand the existence and evolution of such roles due to their loosely defined, interconvertible, and dynamic characteristics. We propose a visual analytics system, RoleSeer, to investigate informal roles from the perspectives of behavioral interactions and depict their dynamic interconversions and transitions. Two cases, experts' feedback, and a user study suggest that RoleSeer helps interpret the identified informal roles and explore the patterns behind role changes. We see our approach's potential in investigating informal roles in a broader range of social games.

HiSMatch: Historical Structure Matching based Temporal Knowledge Graph Reasoning

A Temporal Knowledge Graph (TKG) is a sequence of KGs with respective timestamps, which adopts quadruples in the form of (\emph{subject}, \emph{relation}, \emph{object}, \emph{timestamp}) to describe dynamic facts. TKG reasoning has facilitated many real-world applications via answering such queries as (\emph{query entity}, \emph{query relation}, \emph{?}, \emph{future timestamp}) about future. This is actually a matching task between a query and candidate entities based on their historical structures, which reflect behavioral trends of the entities at different timestamps. In addition, recent KGs provide background knowledge of all the entities, which is also helpful for the matching. Thus, in this paper, we propose the \textbf{Hi}storical \textbf{S}tructure \textbf{Match}ing (\textbf{HiSMatch}) model. It applies two structure encoders to capture the semantic information contained in the historical structures of the query and candidate entities. Besides, it adopts another encoder to integrate the background knowledge into the model. TKG reasoning experiments on six benchmark datasets demonstrate the significant improvement of the proposed HiSMatch model, with up to 5.6\% performance improvement in MRR, compared to the state-of-the-art baselines.

Higgs boson decays $h\rightarrow Z γ$ and $h\rightarrow m_V Z$ in the $U(1)_X$SSM

We present a detailed analysis of the Higgs boson decays $h\rightarrow Z γ$ and $h\rightarrow m_V Z$ in the $U(1)_X$SSM, with $m_V$ denoting the meson ($ω,ρ,ϕ,J/ψ,Υ$). Using the effective Lagrangian method, we calculate the effective constants $C_{γZ}$ (CP-even) and $\tilde{C}_{γZ}$ (CP-odd) for the vertex $h γZ$, which are corrected by the new particle loop diagrams. Numerically, the ratio $Γ_{U(1)_X}(h\rightarrow Z γ)/Γ_{SM}(h\rightarrow Z γ)$ is between $1.02-1.35$. For the vector mesons $ω,ρ,ϕ$ and $J/ψ$, the ratios $Γ_{U(1)_X}(h\rightarrow m_V Z )/Γ_{SM}(h\rightarrow m_V Z)$ are mainly distributed in the range of ($1.01-1.45$). When $m_V$ represents $Υ$, the larger value of the ratio $Γ_{U(1)_X}(h\rightarrow ΥZ )/Γ_{SM}(h\rightarrow ΥZ)$ is mostly located in the range of ($1.002-1.30$). This work can provide a reference for specific types of decay processes which can be searched in LHC.

Unified Vision and Language Prompt Learning

Prompt tuning, a parameter- and data-efficient transfer learning paradigm that tunes only a small number of parameters in a model's input space, has become a trend in the vision community since the emergence of large vision-language models like CLIP. We present a systematic study on two representative prompt tuning methods, namely text prompt tuning and visual prompt tuning. A major finding is that none of the unimodal prompt tuning methods performs consistently well: text prompt tuning fails on data with high intra-class visual variances while visual prompt tuning cannot handle low inter-class variances. To combine the best from both worlds, we propose a simple approach called Unified Prompt Tuning (UPT), which essentially learns a tiny neural network to jointly optimize prompts across different modalities. Extensive experiments on over 11 vision datasets show that UPT achieves a better trade-off than the unimodal counterparts on few-shot learning benchmarks, as well as on domain generalization benchmarks. Code and models will be released to facilitate future research.

Automatic Translating between Ancient Chinese and Contemporary Chinese with Limited Aligned Corpora

The Chinese language has evolved a lot during the long-term development. Therefore, native speakers now have trouble in reading sentences written in ancient Chinese. In this paper, we propose to build an end-to-end neural model to automatically translate between ancient and contemporary Chinese. However, the existing ancient-contemporary Chinese parallel corpora are not aligned at the sentence level and sentence-aligned corpora are limited, which makes it difficult to train the model. To build the sentence level parallel training data for the model, we propose an unsupervised algorithm that constructs sentence-aligned ancient-contemporary pairs by using the fact that the aligned sentence pair shares many of the tokens. Based on the aligned corpus, we propose an end-to-end neural model with copying mechanism and local attention to translate between ancient and contemporary Chinese. Experiments show that the proposed unsupervised algorithm achieves 99.4% F1 score for sentence alignment, and the translation model achieves 26.95 BLEU from ancient to contemporary, and 36.34 BLEU from contemporary to ancient.

Predicting band gaps and band-edge positions of oxide perovskites using DFT and machine learning

Density functional theory within the local or semilocal density approximations (DFT-LDA/GGA) has become a workhorse in electronic structure theory of solids, being extremely fast and reliable for energetics and structural properties, yet remaining highly inaccurate for predicting band gaps of semiconductors and insulators. Accurate prediction of band gaps using firstprinciples methods is time consuming, requiring hybrid functionals, quasi-particle GW, or quantum Monte Carlo methods. Efficiently correcting DFT-LDA/GGA band gaps and unveiling the main chemical and structural factors involved in this correction is desirable for discovering novel materials in high-throughput calculations. In this direction, we use DFT and machine learning techniques to correct band gaps and band-edge positions of a representative subset of ABO3 perovskite oxides. Relying on results of HSE06 hybrid functional calculations as target values of band gaps, we find a systematic band gap correction of ~1.5 eV for this class of materials, where ~1 eV comes from downward shifting the valence band and ~0.5 eV from uplifting the conduction band. The main chemical and structural factors determining the band gap correction are determined through a feature selection procedure.

On the Partial Differential Lüroth's Theorem

We study the Lüroth problem for partial differential fields. The main result is the following partial differential analog of generalized Lüroth's theorem: Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a differential field of characteristic 0 with $m$ derivation operators, $\textbf{u}=u_1,\ldots,u_n$ a set of differential indeterminates over $\mathcal{F}$. We prove that an intermediate differential field $\mathcal{G}$ between $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{F}\langle \textbf{u}\rangle$ is a simple differential extension of $\mathcal{F}$ if and only if the differential dimension polynomial of $\textbf{u}$ over $\mathcal{G}$ is of the form $ω_{\textbf{u}/\mathcal{G}}(t)=n{t+m\choose m}-{t+m-s\choose m}$ for some $s\in\mathbb N$. This result generalizes the classical differential Lüroth's theorem proved by Ritt and Kolchin in the case $m=n=1$. We then present an algorithm to decide whether a given finitely generated differential extension field of $\mathcal{F}$ contained in $\mathcal{F}\langle \textbf{u}\rangle$ is a simple extension, and in the affirmative case, to compute a Lüroth generator. As an application, we solve the proper re-parameterization problem for unirational differential curves.

Stock Trading Volume Prediction with Dual-Process Meta-Learning

Volume prediction is one of the fundamental objectives in the Fintech area, which is helpful for many downstream tasks, e.g., algorithmic trading. Previous methods mostly learn a universal model for different stocks. However, this kind of practice omits the specific characteristics of individual stocks by applying the same set of parameters for different stocks. On the other hand, learning different models for each stock would face data sparsity or cold start problems for many stocks with small capitalization. To take advantage of the data scale and the various characteristics of individual stocks, we propose a dual-process meta-learning method that treats the prediction of each stock as one task under the meta-learning framework. Our method can model the common pattern behind different stocks with a meta-learner, while modeling the specific pattern for each stock across time spans with stock-dependent parameters. Furthermore, we propose to mine the pattern of each stock in the form of a latent variable which is then used for learning the parameters for the prediction module. This makes the prediction procedure aware of the data pattern. Extensive experiments on volume predictions show that our method can improve the performance of various baseline models. Further analyses testify the effectiveness of our proposed meta-learning framework.

Direct TEM observation and quantification of the Gibbs-Thomson effect in a nickel superalloy

Gibbs-Thompson effect is the general term referring to the influence of interfaces on the course of phase transformations such as precipitation or solidification. Whilst attention is most often focused on the Gibbs-Thomson effect on nucleation, growth and coarsening, the present study considers the reverse process of precipitate dissolution in a nickel-base superalloy during in situ TEM observation. The presence of several distinct populations of gamma-prime precipitates (primary, secondary, tertiary and grain boundary) allows the differences due to particle size to be quantified and interpreted. Important implications arise for the selection of heat treatment schedules for nickel-base superalloys and other alloy systems.
