Rethinking Graph Neural Networks for the Graph Coloring Problem

Graph coloring, a classical and critical NP-hard problem, is the problem of assigning connected nodes as different colors as possible. However, we observe that state-of-the-art GNNs are less successful in the graph coloring problem. We analyze the reasons from two perspectives. First, most GNNs fail to generalize the task under homophily to heterophily, i.e., graphs where connected nodes are assigned different colors. Second, GNNs are bounded by the network depth, making them possible to be a local method, which has been demonstrated to be non-optimal in Maximum Independent Set (MIS) problem. In this paper, we focus on the aggregation-combine GNNs (AC-GNNs), a popular class of GNNs. We first define the power of AC-GNNs in the coloring problem as the capability to assign nodes different colors. The definition is different with previous one that is based on the assumption of homophily. We identify node pairs that AC-GNNs fail to discriminate. Furthermore, we show that any AC-GNN is a local coloring method, and any local coloring method is non-optimal by exploring the limits of local methods over sparse random graphs, thereby demonstrating the non-optimality of AC-GNNs due to its local property. We then prove the positive correlation between model depth and its coloring power. Moreover, we discuss the color equivariance of graphs to tackle some practical constraints such as the pre-fixing constraints. Following the discussions above, we summarize a series of rules a series of rules that make a GNN color equivariant and powerful in the coloring problem. Then, we propose a simple AC-GNN variation satisfying these rules. We empirically validate our theoretical findings and demonstrate that our simple model substantially outperforms state-of-the-art heuristic algorithms in both quality and runtime.

Next-ViT: Next Generation Vision Transformer for Efficient Deployment in Realistic Industrial Scenarios

Due to the complex attention mechanisms and model design, most existing vision Transformers (ViTs) can not perform as efficiently as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in realistic industrial deployment scenarios, e.g. TensorRT and CoreML. This poses a distinct challenge: Can a visual neural network be designed to infer as fast as CNNs and perform as powerful as ViTs? Recent works have tried to design CNN-Transformer hybrid architectures to address this issue, yet the overall performance of these works is far away from satisfactory. To end these, we propose a next generation vision Transformer for efficient deployment in realistic industrial scenarios, namely Next-ViT, which dominates both CNNs and ViTs from the perspective of latency/accuracy trade-off. In this work, the Next Convolution Block (NCB) and Next Transformer Block (NTB) are respectively developed to capture local and global information with deployment-friendly mechanisms. Then, Next Hybrid Strategy (NHS) is designed to stack NCB and NTB in an efficient hybrid paradigm, which boosts performance in various downstream tasks. Extensive experiments show that Next-ViT significantly outperforms existing CNNs, ViTs and CNN-Transformer hybrid architectures with respect to the latency/accuracy trade-off across various vision tasks. On TensorRT, Next-ViT surpasses ResNet by 5.5 mAP (from 40.4 to 45.9) on COCO detection and 7.7% mIoU (from 38.8% to 46.5%) on ADE20K segmentation under similar latency. Meanwhile, it achieves comparable performance with CSWin, while the inference speed is accelerated by 3.6x. On CoreML, Next-ViT surpasses EfficientFormer by 4.6 mAP (from 42.6 to 47.2) on COCO detection and 3.5% mIoU (from 45.1% to 48.6%) on ADE20K segmentation under similar latency. Two-Dimensional Semiconducting Metal Organic Frameworks with Auxetic Effect, Room Temperature Ferrimagnetism, Chiral Ferroelectricity, Bipolar Spin Polarization and Topological Nodal Lines/Points

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors integrated with two or more functions are the cornerstone for constructing multifunctional nanodevices, but remain largely limited. Here, by tuning the spin state of organic linkers and the symmetry/topology of crystal lattice, we predict a class of unprecedented multifunctional semiconductors in 2D Cr(II) five-membered heterocyclic metal organic frameworks that simultaneously possess auxetic effect, room temperature ferrimagnetism, chiral ferroe-lectricity, electrically reversible spin polarization and topological nodal lines/points. Taking 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ (TDZ=1.2.5-thiadiazole) as an exemplification, the auxetic effect is produced by the anti-tetra-chiral lattice structure. The high temperature ferrimagnetism originates from the strong d-p direct magnetic exchange interaction between Cr cations and TDZ doublet radical anions. Meanwhile, the clockwise-counterclockwise alignment of TDZ' dipoles results in unique 2D chiral ferroelectricity with atomic-scale vortex-antivortex states. 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ is an intrinsic bipolar magnetic semiconductor where half-metallic conduction with switchable spin-polarization direction can be induced by applying a gate voltage. Besides, the symmetry of the little group C$_4$ of lattice structure endows 2D Cr(TDZ)$_2$ with topological nodal lines and a quadratic nodal point in the Brillouin zone near the Fermi level.

Muon conversion to an eletron in nuclei in the $B-L$ symmetric SSM

In a few years, the COMET experiment at J-PARC and the Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will probe the $μ-e$ conversion rate in the vicinity of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-17})$ for an Al target with high experimental sensitivity. Within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with local $B-L$ gauge symmetry (B-LSSM), we analyze the lepton flavor violating (LFV) process of $μ-e$ conversion in nuclei. Considering the constraint of the experimental upper limit of the LFV rare decay $μ\rightarrow eγ$, the $μ-e$ conversion rates in nuclei within the B-LSSM can achieve $\mathcal{O}(10^{-12})$, which is 5 orders of magnitude larger than the future experimental sensitivity at the Mu2e and COMET experiments and may be detected in the near future.

FindIt: Generalized Localization with Natural Language Queries

We propose FindIt, a simple and versatile framework that unifies a variety of visual grounding and localization tasks including referring expression comprehension, text-based localization, and object detection. Key to our architecture is an efficient multi-scale fusion module that unifies the disparate localization requirements across the tasks. In addition, we discover that a standard object detector is surprisingly effective in unifying these tasks without a need for task-specific design, losses, or pre-computed detections. Our end-to-end trainable framework responds flexibly and accurately to a wide range of referring expression, localization or detection queries for zero, one, or multiple objects. Jointly trained on these tasks, FindIt outperforms the state of the art on both referring expression and text-based localization, and shows competitive performance on object detection. Finally, FindIt generalizes better to out-of-distribution data and novel categories compared to strong single-task baselines. All of these are accomplished by a single, unified and efficient model. The code will be released.

Delineating complex ferroelectric domain structures via second harmonic generation spectral imaging

Understanding the mechanisms and spatial correlations of crystallographic symmetry breaking in ferroelectric materials is essential to tuning their functional properties. While optical second harmonic generation (SHG) has long been utilized in ferroelectric studies, its capability for probing complex polar materials has yet to be fully realized. Here, we develop a SHG spectral imaging method implemented on a home-designed laser-scanning SHG microscope, and demonstrate its application for a model system of (K,Na)NbO3 single crystals. Supervised model fitting analysis produces comprehensive information about the polarization vector orientations and relative fractions of constituent domain variants as well as their thermal evolution across the polymorphic phase transitions. We observe an unexpected persistence of the orthorhombic phase at low temperatures, pointing to the phase competitions. Besides, we show that unsupervised matrix decomposition analysis can quickly and faithfully reveal domain configurations without a priori knowledge about specific material systems. The SHG spectral imaging method can be readily extended to other ferroelectric materials with potentials to be further enhanced.

Integrated Metasurface-based Wavelengths Division Demultiplexers

We present a design approach for realizing on-chip wavelength division demultiplexing (WDD) schemes by integrating all-dielectric metasurfaces of TiO2 nanorod arrays into a SiN waveguide. The designed metasurface locally modifies the effective refractive index of the SiN waveguide, creating an effective WDD that selectively passes a certain band of wavelengths into a specific output port. A set of representative 2-channel and 3-channel WDDs schemes were demonstrated for input TE00/TM00 modes and operating in different bands, showing the flexibility of our design approach. The proposed WDD schemes are compatible with visible to infrared wavelengths, photolithography-based fabrication, high efficiency with maximum transmission of 91%, and a small footprint at a few microns. Our design method paves the way for realizing several on-chip integrated devices for applications in optical data processing and biological sensing.

Learning robot inverse dynamics using sparse online Gaussian process with forgetting mechanism

Online Gaussian processes (GPs), typically used for learning models from time-series data, are more flexible and robust than offline GPs. Both local and sparse approximations of GPs can efficiently learn complex models online. Yet, these approaches assume that all signals are relatively accurate and that all data are available for learning without misleading data. Besides, the online learning capacity of GPs is limited for high-dimension problems and long-term tasks in practice. This paper proposes a sparse online GP (SOGP) with a forgetting mechanism to forget distant model information at a specific rate. The proposed approach combines two general data deletion schemes for the basis vector set of SOGP: The position information-based scheme and the oldest points-based scheme. We apply our approach to learn the inverse dynamics of a collaborative robot with 7 degrees of freedom under a two-segment trajectory tracking problem with task switching. Both simulations and experiments have shown that the proposed approach achieves better tracking accuracy and predictive smoothness compared with the two general data deletion schemes.

Multi-task unscented Kalman inversion (MUKI): a derivative-free joint inversion framework and its application to joint inversion of geophysical data

In the geophysical joint inversion, the gradient and Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling-based methods are widely used owing to their fast convergences or global optimality. However, these methods either require the computation of gradients and easily fall into local optimal solutions, or cost much time to carry out the millions of forward calculations in a huge sampling space. Different from these two methods, taking advantage of the recently developed unscented Kalman method in computational mathematics, we extend an iterative gradient-free Bayesian joint inversion framework, i.e., Multi-task unscented Kalman inversion (MUKI). In this new framework, information from various observations is incorporated, the model is iteratively updated in a derivative-free way, and a Gaussian approximation to the posterior distribution of the model parameters is obtained. We apply the MUKI to the joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersion, which is well-established and widely used to construct the crustal and upper mantle structure of the earth. Based on synthesized and real data, the tests demonstrate that MUKI can recover the model more efficiently than the gradient-based method and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, and it would be a promising approach to resolve the geophysical joint inversion problems.

Zigzag magnetic order in a novel tellurate compound Na$_{4-δ}$NiTeO$_{6}$ with $\mathit{S}$ = 1 chains

Na$_{4-δ}$NiTeO$_{6}$ is a rare example in the transition-metal tellurate family of realizing an $S$ = 1 spin-chain structure. By performing neutron powder diffraction measurements, the ground-state magnetic structure of Na$_{4-δ}$NiTeO$_{6}$ is determined. These measurements reveal that below $T\rm_{N}$ ${\sim}$ 6.8(2) K, the Ni$^{2+}$ moments form a screwed ferromagnetic (FM) spin-chain structure running along the crystallographic $a$ axis but these FM spin chains are coupled antiferromagnetically along the $b$ and $c$ directions, giving rise to a magnetic propagation vector of $k$ = (0, 1/2, 1/2). This zigzag magnetic order is well supported by first-principles calculations. The moment size of Ni$^{2+}$ spins is determined to be 2.1(1) $μ$$\rm_{B}$ at 3 K, suggesting a significant quenching of the orbital moment due to the crystalline electric field (CEF) effect. The previously reported metamagnetic transition near $H\rm_{C}$ ${\sim}$ 0.1 T can be understood as a field-induced spin-flip transition. The relatively easy tunability of the dimensionality of its magnetism by external parameters makes Na$_{4-δ}$NiTeO$_{6}$ a promising candidate for further exploring various types of novel spin-chain physics.

Making the Best of Both Worlds: A Domain-Oriented Transformer for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation

Extensive studies on Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) have propelled the deployment of deep learning from limited experimental datasets into real-world unconstrained domains. Most UDA approaches align features within a common embedding space and apply a shared classifier for target prediction. However, since a perfectly aligned feature space may not exist when the domain discrepancy is large, these methods suffer from two limitations. First, the coercive domain alignment deteriorates target domain discriminability due to lacking target label supervision. Second, the source-supervised classifier is inevitably biased to source data, thus it may underperform in target domain. To alleviate these issues, we propose to simultaneously conduct feature alignment in two individual spaces focusing on different domains, and create for each space a domain-oriented classifier tailored specifically for that domain. Specifically, we design a Domain-Oriented Transformer (DOT) that has two individual classification tokens to learn different domain-oriented representations, and two classifiers to preserve domain-wise discriminability. Theoretical guaranteed contrastive-based alignment and the source-guided pseudo-label refinement strategy are utilized to explore both domain-invariant and specific information. Comprehensive experiments validate that our method achieves state-of-the-art on several benchmarks.

Evidence for unconventional superconductivity in a spinel oxide

The charge frustration with the mixed-valence state inherent to LiTi$_2$O$_4$, which is found to be a unique spinel oxide superconductor, is the impetus for paying special attention to reveal the existence of intriguing superconducting properties. Here, we report a pronounced fourfold rotational symmetry of the superconductivity in high-quality single-crystalline LiTi$_2$O$_4$ (001) thin films. Both the magnetoresistivity and upper critical field under an applied magnetic field manifest striking fourfold oscillations deep inside the superconducting state, whereas the anisotropy vanishes in the normal state, demonstrating that it is an intrinsic property of the superconducting phase. We attribute this behavior to the unconventional $d$-wave superconducting Cooper pairs with the irreducible representation of $E_g$ protected by $O_h$ point group in LiTi$_2$O$_4$. Our findings demonstrate the unconventional character of the pairing interaction in a three-dimensional spinel oxide superconductor and shed new light on the pairing mechanism of unconventional superconductivity.

An Insight-HXMT view of the mHz quasi-regular modulation phenomenon in the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47

Here we report the spectral-timing results of the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47 during its 2021 outburst using observations from the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 1.6--4.2 Hz and quasi-regular modulation (QRM) near 60 mHz are detected during the outburst. The mHz QRM has a fractional rms of 10%--16% in the 8--35 keV energy band with a Q factor (frequency/width) of 2--4. Benefiting from the broad energy band of hxmt, we study the energy dependence of the 60 mHz QRM in 1--100 keV for the first time. We find that the fractional rms of the mHz QRM increases with photon energy, while the time lags of the mHz QRM are soft and decrease with photon energy. Fast recurrence of the mHz QRM, in a timescale of less than one hour, has been observed during the outburst. During this period, the corresponding energy spectra moderately change when the source transitions from the QRM state to the non-QRM state. The QRM phenomena also shows a dependence with the accretion rate. We suggest that the QRM could be caused by an unknown accretion instability aroused from the corona.

Two-Dimensional Superconductivity at the Titanium Sesquioxide Heterointerface

The study of exotic superconductivity in two dimensions has been a central theme in solid state and materials research communities. Experimentally exploring and identifying new fascinating interface superconductors with a high transition temperature ($T_c$) is challenging. Here, we report an experimental observation of intriguing two-dimensional superconductivity with a $T_c$ up to 3.8 K at the interface between Mott insulator Ti$_2$O$_3$ and polar semiconductor GaN. At the verge of superconductivity, we also observe a striking quantum metallic-like state, demonstrating that it is a precursor to the two-dimensional superconductivity as the temperature is decreased. Our work is the first time finding this intriguing superconducting state at the heterointerface, which not only brings a new broad of perspective on the emergent quantum phenomena at the heterointerfaces but also sheds new light on exploiting the novel heterointerface superconductivity with high-$T_c$ via heterostructure engineering.

Machine-Learning-Assisted Investigation of the Diffusion of Hydrogen in Brine by Performing Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Deep saline aquifers are one of the best options for large-scale and long-term hydrogen storage. Predicting the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen molecules at the conditions of saline aquifers is critical for modelling hydrogen storage. The diffusion coefficient of hydrogen molecules in chloride brine with different cations ($\mathrm{Na}^+$, $\mathrm{K}^+$, $\mathrm{Ca}^{2+}$) containing up to 5 $\mathrm{mol/kg_{H_2O}}$ concentration is numerically investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. A wide range of pressure (1-218 atm) and temperature (298-648 K) conditions is applied to cover the realistic operational conditions of the aquifers. We find that the temperature, pressure and properties of ions (compositions and concentrations) affect the hydrogen diffusion coefficient. An Arrhenius behavior of the effect of temperature on the diffusion coefficient has been observed with the temperature independent parameters fitted using the ion concentration under constant pressure. However, it is noted that the pressure strongly affects the diffusive behavior of hydrogen at the high temperature ($\geq$ 400 K) regime, indicating the inaccuracy of the Arrhenius model. Hence, we combine the obtained MD results with four models of machine learning (ML), including linear regression (LR), random forest (RF), extra tree (ET) and gradient boosting (GB) to provide effective predictions on the hydrogen diffusion. The resultant combination of GB model with MD data predicts the diffusion of hydrogen more effectively as compared to the Arrhenius model and other ML models. Moreover, a $post hoc$ analysis (feature importance rank) has been performed to extract the correlation between physical descriptors and simulation results from ML models.

Ubiquitous stripe phase and enhanced electron pairing in interfacial high-Tc superconductor FeSe/BaTiO$_3$

Monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$ provides a new playground for high-Tc superconductivity. A recent study shows the importance of stripy instability for superconductivity enhancement in FeSe/SrTiO3. However, it is still under debate whether such a stripe phase is ubiquitously bound to the interfacial superconductivity. Here, we report on molecular beam epitaxy growth and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study of FeSe films on BaTiO$_3$(001). We find that the stripe phase is more prominent in FeSe/BaTiO$_3$. Long-range stripes exist in bilayer and triple-layer FeSe films at 4 K and even persist up to 77 K in the case of bilayer FeSe, with enlarged superconducting gaps upon alkali-metal deposition. The results point out an intimate correlation between the interfacial superconductivity and the stripe phase.

Transfer learning of phase transitions in percolation and directed percolation

The latest advances of statistical physics have shown remarkable performance of machine learning in identifying phase transitions. In this paper, we apply domain adversarial neural network (DANN) based on transfer learning to studying non-equilibrium and equilibrium phase transition models, which are percolation model and directed percolation (DP) model, respectively. With the DANN, only a small fraction of input configurations (2d images) needs to be labeled, which is automatically chosen, in order to capture the critical point. To learn the DP model, the method is refined by an iterative procedure in determining the critical point, which is a prerequisite for the data collapse in calculating the critical exponent $ν_{\perp}$. We then apply the DANN to a two-dimensional site percolation with configurations filtered to include only the largest cluster which may contain the information related to the order parameter. The DANN learning of both models yields reliable results which are comparable to the ones from Monte Carlo simulations. Our study also shows that the DANN can achieve quite high accuracy at much lower cost, compared to the supervised learning.

Exploring the Impacts from Datasets to Monocular Depth Estimation (MDE) Models with MineNavi

Current computer vision tasks based on deep learning require a huge amount of data with annotations for model training or testing, especially in some dense estimation tasks, such as optical flow segmentation and depth estimation. In practice, manual labeling for dense estimation tasks is very difficult or even impossible, and the scenes of the dataset are often restricted to a small range, which dramatically limits the development of the community. To overcome this deficiency, we propose a synthetic dataset generation method to obtain the expandable dataset without burdensome manual workforce. By this method, we construct a dataset called MineNavi containing video footages from first-perspective-view of the aircraft matched with accurate ground truth for depth estimation in aircraft navigation application. We also provide quantitative experiments to prove that pre-training via our MineNavi dataset can improve the performance of depth estimation model and speed up the convergence of the model on real scene data. Since the synthetic dataset has a similar effect to the real-world dataset in the training process of deep model, we also provide additional experiments with monocular depth estimation method to demonstrate the impact of various factors in our dataset such as lighting conditions and motion mode.
