Generation and search of axion-like light particle using intense crystalline field

Intense electric field $\sim 10^{10}-10^{11}$ V/cm in crystal has been known for a long time and has wide applications. We study the conversion of axion-like light particle and photon in the intense electric field in crystal. We find that the conversion of axion-like particle and photon happens for energy larger than keV range. We propose search of axion-like light particle using the intense crystalline field. We discuss the solar axion search experiment and a variety of shining-through-wall experiment using crystalline field. Due to the intense crystalline field which corresponds to magnetic field $\sim 10^4-10^5$ Tesla these experiments are very interesting. In particular these experiments can probe the mass range of axion-like particle from eV to keV.

keV scale $ν_R$ dark matter and its detection in $β$ decay experiment

We study dark matter(DM) in the model with one keV scale right-handed neutrino $ν_{R1}$ and two GeV scale right-handed neutrinos $ν_{R2,3}$, the $ν$SM. We find that one of the GeV scale right-handed neutrinos can have much longer lifetime than the other when two GeV scale right-handed neutrinos are degenerate. We show that mass and mixing of light neutrinos can be explained in this case. Significant entropy release can be generated in a reheating produced by the decay of one of the GeV scale $ν_{R}$. The density of $ν_{R1}$ DM can be diluted by two orders of magnitude and the mixing of $ν_{R1}$ with active neutrinos is allowed to be much larger, reaching the bound from X-ray observation. This mixing can lead to sizeable rate of $ν_{R1}$ capture by radioactive nuclei. The $ν_{R1}$ capture events are mono-energetic electrons with keV scale energy away from the beta decay spectrum. This is a new way to detect DM in the universe.

Grouping time series by pairwise measures of redundancy

A novel approach is proposed to group redundant time series in the frame of causality. It assumes that (i) the dynamics of the system can be described using just a small number of characteristic modes, and that (ii) a pairwise measure of redundancy is sufficient to elicit the presence of correlated degrees of freedom. We show the application of the proposed approach on fMRI data from a resting human brain and gene expression profiles from HeLa cell culture.

Symmetry, dark matter and LHC phenomenology of the minimal $ν$SM

A sterile neutrino with a mass of a few keV can play the role of a warm dark matter(DM). This can be realized in seesaw models with 3 left- and 3 right-handed neutrinos. It is possible to identify the keV neutrino to be one of the right-handed neutrinos leaving the other two to be much more heavier, the $ν$SM model. We show that with this realization of keV neutrino DM, the model has an approximate Friedberg-Lee symmetry providing a natural explanation for the lightness of the right-handed neutrino. We also find that in this model the mixing parameters couple light and heavy neutrinos are strongly correlated, and can be large enough to have testable effects at the LHC for the two heavy right-handed neutrinos to be in the hundred-GeV range.

The Friedberg-Lee Symmetry and Minimal Seesaw Model

The Friedberg-Lee (FL) symmetry is generated by a transformation of a fermionic field $q$ to $q + ξz$. This symmetry puts very restrictive constraints on allowed terms in a Lagrangian. Applying this symmetry to $N$ fermionic fields, we find that the number of independent fields is reduced to $N-1$ if the fields have gauge interaction or the transformation is a local one. Using this property, we find that a seesaw model originally with three generations of left- and right-handed neutrinos, with the left-handed neutrinos unaffected but the right-handed neutrinos transformed under the local FL translation, is reduced to an effective theory of minimal seesaw which has only two right-handed neutrinos. The symmetry predicts that one of the light neutrino masses must be zero.

Emission angle distribution and flavor transformation of supernova neutrinos

Using moment equations we analyze collective flavor transformation of supernova neutrinos. We study the convergence of moment equations and find that numerical results using a few moment converge quite fast. We study effects of emission angle distribution of neutrinos on neutrino sphere. We study scaling law of the amplitude of neutrino self-interaction Hamiltonian and find that it depends on model of emission angle distribution of neutrinos. Dependence of neutrino oscillation on different models of emission angle distribution is studied.

Moment equations of neutrinos in supernova

We derive a series of moment equations describing the motion and flavor transformation of neutrinos in supernova. We find a particular series of moments of neutrino density matrix in supernova. The emission angle distribution of neutrinos is described by this series of moments. We expand the equation of neutrinos using these moments and obtain moment equations. We find that these moments have very good property of convergence and the infinite series of equations can be truncated to equations with a small set of moments. Using a small set of moment equations the required computational power is reduced by about two orders of magnitude compared to that in multi-angle simulation. The study on non-linear flavor transformation of neutrinos is substantially simplified using these equations. Two flavor system of neutrinos is also considered and new equations describing the flavor polarization vectors of neutrinos are found.

Signal of New Physics and Chemical Composition of Matter in Core Crossing Neutrinos

We consider non-standard matter effect in flavor conversion of neutrinos crossing the core of the Earth. We show that oscillation of core crossing neutrinos with $E \gsim 0.5$ GeV can be well described by a first order perturbation theory. We show that due to non-standard matter effect varying chemical composition in the Earth can modify the neutrino flavor conversion by 100%. Effects of CP violating phases in non-standard Neutral Current interactions are emphasized in particular.

Generalization of Friedberg-Lee Symmetry

We study the possible origin of Friedberg-Lee symmetry. First, we propose the generalized Friedberg-Lee symmetry in the potential by including the scalar fields in the field transformations, which can be broken down to the FL symmetry spontaneously. We show that the generalized Friedberg-Lee symmetry allows a typical form of Yukawa couplings, and the realistic neutrino masses and mixings can be generated via see-saw mechanism. If the right-handed neutrinos transform non-trivially under the generalized Friedberg-Lee symmetry, we can have the testable TeV scale see-saw mechanism. Second, we present two models with the $SO(3)\times U(1)$ global flavour symmetry in the lepton sector. After the flavour symmetry breaking, we can obtain the charged lepton masses, and explain the neutrino masses and mixings via see-saw mechanism. Interestingly, the complete neutrino mass matrices are similar to those of the above models with generalized Friedberg-Lee symmetry. So the Friedberg-Lee symmetry is the residual symmetry in the neutrino mass matrix after the $SO(3)\times U(1)$ flavour symmetry breaking.

Precise Formulation of Neutrino Oscillation in the Earth

We give a perturbation theory of neutrino oscillation in the Earth. The perturbation theory is valid for neutrinos with energy $E \gsim 0.5$ GeV. It is formulated using trajectory dependent average potential. Non-adiabatic contributions are included as the first order effects in the perturbation theory. We analyze neutrino oscillation with standard matter effect and with non-standard matter effect. In a three flavor analysis we show that the perturbation theory gives a precise description of neutrino conversion in the Earth. Effect of the Earth matter is substantially simplified in this formulation.

Anomaly inflow mechanism using Wilson line

It is shown that the anomaly inflow mechanism can be implemented using Wilson line in odd dimensional gauge theories. An action of Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) type can be constructed using Wilson line. The action is understood in the odd dimensional bulk space-time rather than in the even dimensional boundary. This action is not gauge invariant. It gives anomalous gauge variations of the consistent form on boundary space-times. So it can be used to cancel the quantum anomalies localized on boundary space-times. This offers a new way to cancel the gauge anomaly and construct anomaly-free gauge theory in odd dimensional space-time.

WZW action in odd dimensional gauge theories

It is shown that Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) type actions can be constructed in odd dimensional space-times using Wilson line or Wilson loop. WZW action constructed using Wilson line gives anomalous gauge variations and the WZW action constructed using Wilson loop gives anomalous chiral transformation. We show that pure gauge theory including Yang-Mills action, Chern-Simons action and the WZW action can be defined in odd dimensional space-times with even dimensional boundaries. Examples in 3D and 5D are given. We emphasize that this offers a way to generalize gauge theory in odd dimensions. The WZW action constructed using Wilson line can not be considered as action localized on boundary space-times since it can give anomalous gauge transformations on separated boundaries. We try to show that such WZW action can be obtained in the effective theory when making localized chiral fermions decouple.

Toward precision measurements in solar neutrinos

Solar neutrino physics enters a stage of precision measurements. In this connection we present a precise analytic description of the neutrino conversion in the context of LMA MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem. Using the adiabatic perturbation theory we derive an analytic formula for the $ν_e$ survival probability which takes into account the non-adiabatic corrections and the regeneration effect inside the Earth. The probability is averaged over the neutrino production region. We find that the non-adiabatic corrections are of the order $10^{-9}-10^{-7}$. Using the formula for the Earth regeneration effect we discuss features of the zenith angle dependence of the $ν_e$ flux. In particular, we show that effects of small structures at the surface of the Earth can be important.

Neutrino Bilarge Mixing and Flavor Physics in the Flipped SU(5) Model

We have constructed a specific supersymmetric flipped SU(5) GUT model in which bilarge neutrino mixing is incorporated. Because the up-type and down-type quarks in the model are flipped in the representations ten and five with respect to the usual SU(5), the radiatively generated flavor mixing in squark mass matrices due to the large neutrino mixing has a pattern different from those in the conventional SU(5) and SO(10) supersymmetric GUTs. This leads to phenomenological consequences quite different from SU(5) or SO(10) supersymmetric GUT models. That is, it has almost no impact on B physics. On the contrary, the model has effects in top and charm physics as well as lepton physics. In particular, it gives promising prediction on the mass difference, $ΔM_D$, of the $D-{\bar D}$ mixing which for some ranges of the parameter space with large $\tanβ$ can be at the order of $10^9 ~\hbar ~s^{-1}$, one order of magnitude smaller than the experimental upper bound. In some regions of the parameter space $ΔM_D$ can saturate the present bound. For these ranges of parameter space, $t \to u,c+h^0$ can reach $10^{-5}-10^{-6}$ which would be observed at the LHC and future $γ-γ$ colliders.

Low Energy 6-Dimensional N=2 Supersymmertric SU(6) Models on $T^2$ Orbifolds

We propose low energy 6-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric SU(6) models on $M^4\times T^2/(Z_2)^3$ and $M^4\times T^2/(Z_2)^4$, where the orbifold $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)$ model can be embedded on the boundary 4-brane. For the zero modes, the 6-dimensional N=2 supersymmetry and the SU(6) gauge symmetry are broken down to the 4-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry and the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times U(1)'$ gauge symmetry by orbifold projections. In order to cancel the anomalies involving at least one $U(1)'$, we add extra exotic particles. We also study the anomaly free conditions and present some anomaly free models. The gauge coupling unification can be achieved at $100\sim 200$ TeV if the compactification scale for the fifth dimension is $3\sim 4$ TeV. The proton decay problem can be avoided by putting the quarks and leptons/neutrinos on different 3-branes. And we discuss how to break the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times U(1)'$ gauge symmetry, solve the $μ$ problem, and generate the $Z-Z'$ mass hierarchy naturally by using the geometry. The masses of exotic particles can be at the order of 1 TeV after the gauge symmetry breaking. We also forbid the dimension-5 operators for the neutrino masses by $U(1)'$ gauge symmetry, and the realistic left-handed neutrino masses can be obtained via non-renormalizable terms.

Low Energy Gauge Unification Theory

Because of the problems arising from the fermion unification in the traditional Grand Unified Theory and the mass hierarchy between the 4-dimensional Planck scale and weak scale, we suggest the low energy gauge unification theory with low high-dimensional Planck scale. We discuss the non-supersymmetric SU(5) model on $M^4\times S^1/Z_2 \times S^1/Z_2$ and the supersymmetric SU(5) model on $M^4\times S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2') \times S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2')$. The SU(5) gauge symmetry is broken by the orbifold projection for the zero modes, and the gauge unification is accelerated due to the SU(5) asymmetric light KK states. In our models, we forbid the proton decay, still keep the charge quantization, and automatically solve the fermion mass problem. We also comment on the anomaly cancellation and other possible scenarios for low energy gauge unification.

$(g-2)_μ$ and CP Asymmetries in $B^0_{d,s} \to l^+ l^-$ and $b \to s γ$ in SUSY models

We show that with a good fit to the muon $g-2$ constraint, the CP asymmetry can be as large as 25% (15%) for $B^0_d \to τ^+ τ^-$ ($B^0_d \to μ^+ μ^-$) in SUGRA models with nonuniversal gaugino masses and MSSM. If tau events indentified at B factories the CP asymmetry in $B^0_d \to τ^+τ^-$ can be a powerful probe on physics beyond SM. An interesting case is that new physics gives a prediction on the branching ratio which is still in the uncertain region of the SM prediction. The CP asymmetry for $B^0_d \to l^+ l^-$ in this case can still reach 20%. So it is powerful to shed light on physics beyond SM while the CP asymmetry of $b \to s γ$ in this case can only reach 2% at most which is too small to draw a definite conclusion on new physics effects at B factories.
