Time-reversal invariant resonant backscattering on a topological insulator surface driven by a time-periodic gate voltage

We study the scattering of the Dirac electrons by a point-like nonmagnetic impurity on the surface of a topological insulator, driven by a time-periodic gate voltage. It is found that, due to the doublet degenerate crossing points of different Floquet sidebands, resonant backscattering can happen for the surface electrons, even without breaking the time-reversal (TR) symmetry of the topological surface states (TSSs). The energy spectrum is reshuffled in a way quite different from that for the circularly polarized light, so that new features are exhibited in the Friedel oscillations of the local charge and spin density of states. Although the electron scattering is dramatically modified by the driving voltage, the $1/ρ$ scale law of the spin precession persists for the TSSs. The TR invariant backscattering provides a possible way to engineer the Dirac electronic spectrum of the TSSs, without destroying the unique property of spin-momentum interlocking of the TSSs.

Band splitting with vanishing spin polarizations in noncentrosymmetric crystals

The Dresselhaus and Rashba effects are well-known phenomena in solid-state physics, in which spin-orbit coupling (SOC) splits spin-up and spin-down energy bands of nonmagnetic non-centrosymmetric crystals. Here, we discover a new phenomenon, dubbed as band splitting with vanishing spin polarizations (BSVSP), in which, as usual, SOC splits the energy bands in nonmagnetic non-centrosymmetric systems; surprisingly, however, both split bands show no net spin polarization along certain high-symmetry lines in the Brillouin zone. In order to rationalize this phenomenon, we propose a new classification of point groups into pseudo-polar and non-pseudo-polar groups. By means of first-principles simulations, we demonstrate that BSVSP can take place in both symmorphic (e.g., bulk GaAs) and non-symmorphic systems (e.g., two dimensional ferroelectric SnTe). Furthermore, we propose a novel linear magnetoelectric coupling in reciprocal space, which could be employed to tune the spin polarization with an external electric field. The BSVSP effect and its manipulation could therefore pave a new way to novel spintronic devices.

Cross-X Learning for Fine-Grained Visual Categorization

Recognizing objects from subcategories with very subtle differences remains a challenging task due to the large intra-class and small inter-class variation. Recent work tackles this problem in a weakly-supervised manner: object parts are first detected and the corresponding part-specific features are extracted for fine-grained classification. However, these methods typically treat the part-specific features of each image in isolation while neglecting their relationships between different images. In this paper, we propose Cross-X learning, a simple yet effective approach that exploits the relationships between different images and between different network layers for robust multi-scale feature learning. Our approach involves two novel components: (i) a cross-category cross-semantic regularizer that guides the extracted features to represent semantic parts and, (ii) a cross-layer regularizer that improves the robustness of multi-scale features by matching the prediction distribution across multiple layers. Our approach can be easily trained end-to-end and is scalable to large datasets like NABirds. We empirically analyze the contributions of different components of our approach and demonstrate its robustness, effectiveness and state-of-the-art performance on five benchmark datasets. Aligning Linguistic Words and Visual Semantic Units for Image Captioning

Image captioning attempts to generate a sentence composed of several linguistic words, which are used to describe objects, attributes, and interactions in an image, denoted as visual semantic units in this paper. Based on this view, we propose to explicitly model the object interactions in semantics and geometry based on Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs), and fully exploit the alignment between linguistic words and visual semantic units for image captioning. Particularly, we construct a semantic graph and a geometry graph, where each node corresponds to a visual semantic unit, i.e., an object, an attribute, or a semantic (geometrical) interaction between two objects. Accordingly, the semantic (geometrical) context-aware embeddings for each unit are obtained through the corresponding GCN learning processers. At each time step, a context gated attention module takes as inputs the embeddings of the visual semantic units and hierarchically align the current word with these units by first deciding which type of visual semantic unit (object, attribute, or interaction) the current word is about, and then finding the most correlated visual semantic units under this type. Extensive experiments are conducted on the challenging MS-COCO image captioning dataset, and superior results are reported when comparing to state-of-the-art approaches.

Positive longitudinal spin magnetoconductivity in $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological Dirac semimetals

Recently, a class of Dirac semimetals, such as \textrm{Na}$_{\mathrm{3}}% $\textrm{Bi} and \textrm{Cd}$_{\mathrm{2}}$\textrm{As}$_{\mathrm{3}}$, are discovered to carry $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ monopole charges. We present an experimental mechanism to realize the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ anomaly in regard to the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological charges, and propose to probe it by magnetotransport measurement. In analogy to the chiral anomaly in a Weyl semimetal, the acceleration of electrons by a spin bias along the magnetic field can create a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ charge imbalance between the Dirac points, the relaxation of which contributes a measurable positive longitudinal spin magnetoconductivity (LSMC) to the system. The $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ anomaly induced LSMC is a spin version of the longitudinal magnetoconductivity (LMC) due to the chiral anomaly, which possesses all characters of the chiral anomaly induced LMC. While the chiral anomaly in the topological Dirac semimetal is very sensitive to local magnetic impurities, the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ anomaly is found to be immune to local magnetic disorder. It is further demonstrated that the quadratic or linear field dependence of the positive LMC is not unique to the chiral anomaly. Base on this, we argue that the periodic-in-$1/B$ quantum oscillations superposed on the positive LSMC can serve as a fingerprint of the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ anomaly in topological Dirac semimetals.

Voltage-induced high-speed DW motion in a synthetic antiferromagnet

Voltage-induced motion of a magnetic domain wall (DW) has potential in developing novel devices with ultralow dissipation. However, the speed for the voltage-induced DW motion (VIDWM) in a single ferromagnetic layer is usually very low. In this work, we proposed VIDWM with high speed in a synthetic antiferromaget (SAF). The velocity for the coupled DWs in the SAF is significantly higher than its counterpart in a single ferromagnetic layer. Strong interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange coupling plays a critical role for the high DW velocity since it inhibits the tilting of DW plane with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. On the other hand, the Walker breakdown of DW motion is also inhibited due to the stabilization of moment orientation under a strong interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling. In theory, the voltage-induced gradient of magnetic anisotropy is proved to be equal to an effective magnetic field that drives DW.

Learning Longer-term Dependencies via Grouped Distributor Unit

Learning long-term dependencies still remains difficult for recurrent neural networks (RNNs) despite their success in sequence modeling recently. In this paper, we propose a novel gated RNN structure, which contains only one gate. Hidden states in the proposed grouped distributor unit (GDU) are partitioned into groups. For each group, the proportion of memory to be overwritten in each state transition is limited to a constant and is adaptively distributed to each group member. In other word, every separate group has a fixed overall update rate, yet all units are allowed to have different paces. Information is therefore forced to be latched in a flexible way, which helps the model to capture long-term dependencies in data. Besides having a simpler structure, GDU is demonstrated experimentally to outperform LSTM and GRU on tasks including both pathological problems and natural data set.

Halmos' two projections theorem for Hilbert $C^*$-module operators and the Friedrichs

Halmos' two projections theorem for Hilbert space operators is one of the fundamental results in operator theory. In this paper, we introduce the term of two harmonious projections in the context of adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules, extend Halmos' two projections theorem to the case of two harmonious projections. We also give some new characterizations of the closed submodules and their associated projections. As an application, a norm equation associated to a characterization of the Friedrichs angle is proved to be true in the framework of Hilbert $C^*$-modules.

Ferroelectricity with Asymmetric Hysteresis in Metallic LiOsO3 Ultrathin Films

Bulk LiOsO3 was experimentally identified as a "ferroelectric" metal where polar distortions coexist with metallicity [Shi et al., Nature Materials 12, 1024 (2013)]. It is generally believed that polar displacements in a "ferroelectric" metal cannot be switched by an external electric field. Here, via comprehensive density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that a two-unit-cell-thick LiOsO3 thin film exhibits a ferroelectric ground state having an out-of-plane electric dipole moment that can be switched by an external electric field. Moreover, its dipole moment-versus-electric-field hysteresis loop is asymmetric because only surface Li ions'displacements are reversed by external electric field whereas the field-induced force on inner Li atoms are nearly fully screened by itinerant electrons. As a relevant by-product of our study, we also extend the concept of "Born effective charge" to finite metallic systems, and show its usefulness to rationalize the observed effects.

Quantum-oscillation-modulated angular dependences of the positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity and planar Hall effect in Weyl semimetals

We study the positive longitudinal magnetoconductivity (LMC) and planar Hall effect as emergent effects of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals, following a recent-developed theory by integrating the Landau quantization with Boltzmann equation. It is found that, in the weak magnetic field regime, the LMC and planar Hall conductivity (PHC) obey $\cos^{6}θ$ and $\cos^{5}θ\sin θ$ dependences on the angle $θ$ between the magnetic and electric fields. For higher magnetic fields, the LMC and PHC cross over to $\cos^{2}θ$ and $\cosθ\sinθ$ dependences, respectively. Interestingly, the PHC could exhibit quantum oscillations with varying $θ$, due to the periodic-in-$1/B$ oscillations of the chiral chemical potential. When the magnetic and electric fields are noncollinear, the LMC and PHC will deviate from the classical $B$-quadratic dependence, even in the weak magnetic field regime.

Anomalous Nernst effect on a magnetically-doped topological insulator surface: A Green's function approach

By generalizing the Kubo-Streda formula for calculating electrical conductivities to the thermoelectric coefficients, we theoretically study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) on the surface of a topological insulator induced by a finite concentration of magnetic impurities. The ANE is found to be modulated by the impurity scattering and thermal fluctuations, simultaneously, and so exhibits rich structures in the energy space. While the anomalous Hall conductivity is half-integer quantized with the Fermi level across the magnetic-impurity-induced gap, the anomalous Nernst signal (ANS) is fully suppressed and the thermopower is linear-dependent on the Fermi energy. Around the magnetic-impurity-induced localized levels, the ANS and thermopower are resonant enhanced. The suppression and enhancement of the thermoelectric coefficients will compete with each other as the magnetic impurity potential increases continually. More interestingly, when a finite charge potential is included, the resonant peaks of the ANS and thermopower will be renormalized, making the signs of the ANS and thermopower tunable by the strength of the charge potential.

Global well-posedness for the Phan-Thein-Tanner model in critical Besov spaces without damping

In this paper, we mainly investigate the Cauchy problem for the Phan-Thein-Tanner (PTT) model. The PPT model can be viewed as a Navier-Stokes equations couple with a nonlinear transport system. This model is derived from network theory for the polymeric fluid. We study about the global well posedness of the PTT model in critical Besov spaces. When the initial data is a small perturbation over around the equilibrium, we prove that the strong solution in critical Besov spaces exists globally.

Blow up and global existence for the periodic Phan-Thein-Tanner model

In this paper, we mainly investigate the Cauchy problem for the periodic Phan-Thein-Tanner (PTT) model. This model is derived from network theory for the polymeric fluid. We prove that the strong solutions of PTT model will blow up in finite time if the trace of initial stress tensor $\tr τ_0(x)$ is negative. This is a very different with the other viscoelastic model. On the other hand, we obtain the global existence result with small initial data when $\tr τ_0(x)\geq c_0>0$ for some $c_0$. Moreover, we study about the large time behavior.

The reason for the tilting of domain wall with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction from a microscopic dynamical perspective

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) of a heavy metal (HM)/ferromagnetic (FM) metal heterostructure is vital to the current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) at an ultrahigh velocity. However, strong DMI also tilts the moving domain wall (DW) plane, and the mechanism for this tilting is not quite clear. In this work, we have found that this tilting may be understood based on a micromagnetic calculation from a microscopic dynamical perspective. The DMI-induced antisymmetric moment structure at the two boundaries of the track needs to be paid attention. In the early stage of CIDWM induced by spin-orbit torque, this antisymmetry is destroyed. Afterwards, the moments at the two boundaries experience distinct rotation processes with different energy paths towards their final stable antisymmetric moment structure. This results in different initial velocities of the local DW regions at the two boundaries. In mathematics, this distinct DW dynamical progresses at the two boundaries can be approximately revealed by modifying the initial conditions for solving the Thiele equations.

An Empirical Evaluation On Vibrotactile Feedback For Wristband System

With the rapid development of mobile computing, wearable wrist-worn is becoming more and more popular. But the current vibrotactile feedback patterns of most wrist-worn devices are too simple to enable effective interaction in nonvisual scenarios. In this paper, we propose the wristband system with four vibrating motors placed in different positions in the wristband, providing multiple vibration patterns to transmit multi-semantic information for users in eyes-free scenarios. However, we just applied five vibrotactile patterns in experiments (positional up and down, horizontal diagonal, clockwise circular, and total vibration) after contrastive analyzing nine patterns in a pilot experiment. The two experiments with the same 12 participants perform the same experimental process in lab and outdoors. According to the experimental results, users can effectively distinguish the five patterns both in lab and outside, with approximately 90% accuracy (except clockwise circular vibration of outside experiment), proving these five vibration patterns can be used to output multi-semantic information. The system can be applied to eyes-free interaction scenarios for wrist-worn devices.

A Single-Crystal Neutron Diffraction Study on Magnetic Structure of CsCo2Se2

The magnetic structure of CsCo2Se2 was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction technique. An antiferromagnetic transition with the propagation vector (0,0,1) was observed at T_N = 78 K. The Co magnetic moment 0.772(6) μ_B at 10 K pointing in the basal plane couples ferromagnetically in the plane which stacks antiferromagnetically along the c direction. Tuning and suppressing the interplane antiferromagnetic interaction may be crucial to induce the material to a superconducting state.

Blow-up phenomenon, ill-posedness and peakon solutions for the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations

In this paper we mainly investigate the initial value problem of the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations. We first present a new blow-up result to the system for a special class of smooth initial data by using the rotational invariant properties of the system. Then, we prove that the periodic Euler-Poincaré equations is ill-posed in critical Besov spaces by a contradiction argument. Finally, we verify the system possesses a class of peakon solutions in the sense of distributions.

The parallel sum for adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules

The parallel sum for adjoinable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules is introduced and studied. Some results known for matrices and bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces are generalized to the case of adjointable operators on Hilbert $C^*$-modules. It is shown that there exist a Hilbert $C^*$-module $H$ and two positive operators $A, B\in\mathcal{L}(H)$ such that the operator equation $A^{1/2}=(A+B)^{1/2}X, X\in \cal{L}(H)$ has no solution, where $\mathcal{L}(H)$ denotes the set of all adjointable operators on $H$.
