Exploring Deep Reinforcement Learning-Assisted Federated Learning for Online Resource Allocation in Privacy-Persevering EdgeIoT

Federated learning (FL) has been increasingly considered to preserve data training privacy from eavesdropping attacks in mobile edge computing-based Internet of Thing (EdgeIoT). On the one hand, the learning accuracy of FL can be improved by selecting the IoT devices with large datasets for training, which gives rise to a higher energy consumption. On the other hand, the energy consumption can be reduced by selecting the IoT devices with small datasets for FL, resulting in a falling learning accuracy. In this paper, we formulate a new resource allocation problem for privacy-persevering EdgeIoT to balance the learning accuracy of FL and the energy consumption of the IoT device. We propose a new federated learning-enabled twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (FL-DLT3) framework to achieve the optimal accuracy and energy balance in a continuous domain. Furthermore, long short term memory (LSTM) is leveraged in FL-DLT3 to predict the time-varying network state while FL-DLT3 is trained to select the IoT devices and allocate the transmit power. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed FL-DLT3 achieves fast convergence (less than 100 iterations) while the FL accuracy-to-energy consumption ratio is improved by 51.8% compared to existing state-of-the-art benchmark.

Placement and Resource Allocation of Wireless-Powered Multiantenna UAV for Energy-Efficient Multiuser NOMA

This paper investigates a new downlink nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system, where a multiantenna unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is powered by wireless power transfer (WPT) and serves as the base station for multiple pairs of ground users (GUs) running NOMA in each pair. An energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the WPT time and the placement for the UAV, and the allocation of the UAV's transmit power between different NOMA user pairs and within each pair. To efficiently solve this nonconvex problem, we decompose the problem into three subproblems using block coordinate descent. For the subproblem of intra-pair power allocation within each NOMA user pair, we construct a supermodular game with confirmed convergence to a Nash equilibrium. Given the intra-pair power allocation, successive convex approximation is applied to convexify and solve the subproblem of WPT time allocation and inter-pair power allocation between the user pairs. Finally, we solve the subproblem of UAV placement by using the Lagrange multiplier method. Simulations show that our approach can substantially outperform its alternatives that do not use NOMA and WPT techniques or that do not optimize the UAV location.

Three-dimensional Cooperative Localization of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Sensors

Many location-based services use Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurements due to their universal availability. In this paper, we study the association of a large number of low-cost Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors and their possible installation locations, which can enable various sensing and automation-related applications. We propose an efficient approach to solve the corresponding permutation combinatorial optimization problem, which integrates continuous space cooperative localization and permutation space likelihood ascent search. A convex relaxation-based optimization is designed to estimate the coarse locations of blindfolded devices in continuous 3D spaces, which are then projected to the feasible permutation space. An efficient Cramér-Rao Lower Bound based likelihood ascent search algorithm is proposed to refine the solution. Extensive experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, which show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art combinatorial optimization algorithms and achieves close-to-100% accuracy with affordable execution time.

Sum-Rate Maximization for Multi-Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Assisted Device-to-Device Communications

This paper proposes to deploy multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in device-to-device (D2D)-underlaid cellular systems. The uplink sum-rate of the system is maximized by jointly optimizing the transmit powers of the users, the pairing of the cellular users (CUs) and D2D links, the receive beamforming of the base station (BS), and the configuration of the RISs, subject to the power limits and quality-of-service (QoS) of the users. To address the non-convexity of this problem, we develop a new block coordinate descent (BCD) framework which decouples the D2D-CU pairing, power allocation and receive beamforming, from the configuration of the RISs. Specifically, we derive closed-form expressions for the power allocation and receive beamforming under any D2D-CU pairing, which facilitates interpreting the D2D-CU pairing as a bipartite graph matching solved using the Hungarian algorithm. We transform the configuration of the RISs into a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) with multiple quadratic constraints. A low-complexity algorithm, named Riemannian manifold-based alternating direction method of multipliers (RM-ADMM), is developed to decompose the QCQP into simpler QCQPs with a single constraint each, and solve them efficiently in a decentralized manner. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the sum-rate of the D2D-underlaid system with a reduced complexity, as compared to its alternative based on semidefinite relaxation (SDR).

Capacity Analysis of Public Blockchain

As distributed ledgers, blockchains run consensus protocols which trade capacity for consistency, especially in non-ideal networks with incomplete connectivity and erroneous links. Existing studies on the tradeoff between capacity and consistency are only qualitative or rely on specific assumptions. This paper presents discrete-time Markov chain models to quantify the capacity of Proof-of-Work based public blockchains in non-ideal networks. The comprehensive model is collapsed to be ergodic under the eventual consistency of blockchains, achieving tractability and efficient evaluations of blockchain capacity. A closed-form expression for the capacity is derived in the case of two miners. Another important aspect is that we extend the ergodic model to analyze the capacity under strong consistency, evaluating the robustness of blockchains against double-spending attacks. Validated by simulations, the proposed models are accurate and reveal the effect of link quality and the distribution of mining rates on blockchain capacity and the ratio of stale blocks.

Delay-Constrained Joint Power Control, User Detection and Passive Beamforming in Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Uplink mmWave System

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications provide access to spectra with bandwidths and in abundance. However, the high susceptibility of mmWave to blockage imposes crucial challenges, especially to low-latency services. In this paper, a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted mmWave scheme is proposed to overcome the impact of blockage. New methods are developed to minimize the user power for a multi-user mmWave system by jointly optimizing individual device power, multi-user detection matrix and passive beamforming, subject to delay requirements. An alternating optimization framework is delivered so that the joint optimization problem can be decomposed into three subproblems iteratively optimized till convergence. In particular, closed-form expressions are devised for the update of the powers and multi-user detection vectors. The configuration of the IRS is formulated as a sum-of-inverse minimization (SIMin) fractional programming problem and solved by developing a new solution based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). The configuration is also interpreted as a latency residual maximization problem, and solved efficiently by designing a new complex circle manifold optimization (CCMO) method. Numerical results corroborate the feasibility and effectiveness of our algorithms in terms of power saving, as compared with an existing semidefinite relaxation technique.

Joint Resource Management for MC-NOMA: A Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

This paper presents a novel and effective deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach to addressing joint resource management (JRM) in a practical multi-carrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) system, where hardware sensitivity and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) are considered. We first formulate the JRM problem to maximize the weighted-sum system throughput. Then, the JRM problem is decoupled into two iterative subtasks: subcarrier assignment (SA, including user grouping) and power allocation (PA). Each subtask is a sequential decision process. Invoking a deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm, our proposed DRL-based JRM (DRL-JRM) approach jointly performs the two subtasks, where the optimization objective and constraints of the subtasks are addressed by a new joint reward and internal reward mechanism. A multi-agent structure and a convolutional neural network are adopted to reduce the complexity of the PA subtask. We also tailor the neural network structure for the stability and convergence of DRL-JRM. Corroborated by extensive experiments, the proposed DRL-JRM scheme is superior to existing alternatives in terms of system throughput and resistance to interference, especially in the presence of many users and strong inter-cell interference. DRL-JRM can flexibly meet individual service requirements of users.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in Massive MIMO-NOMA Networks with Wireless Power Transfer: A Distributed ADMM Approach

In multicell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks, base stations (BSs) with multiple antennas deliver their radio frequency energy in the downlink, and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices use their harvested energy to support uplink data transmission. This paper investigates the energy efficiency (EE) problem for multicell massive MIMO NOMA networks with wireless power transfer (WPT). To maximize the EE of the network, we propose a novel joint power, time, antenna selection, and subcarrier resource allocation scheme, which can properly allocate the time for energy harvesting and data transmission. Both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) are considered, and their corresponding EE performance is analyzed. Under quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, an EE maximization problem is formulated, which is non-trivial due to non-convexity. We first adopt nonlinear fraction programming methods to convert the problem to be convex, and then, develop a distributed alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)- based approach to solve the problem. Simulation results demonstrate that compared to alternative methods, the proposed algorithm can converge quickly within fewer iterations, and can achieve better EE performance.

A Multi-Scale Method for Distributed Convex Optimization with Constraints

This paper proposes a multi-scale method to design a continuous-time distributed algorithm for constrained convex optimization problems by using multi-agents with Markov switched network dynamics and noisy inter-agent communications. Unlike most previous work which mainly puts emphasis on dealing with fixed network topology, this paper tackles the challenging problem of investigating the joint effects of stochastic networks and the inter-agent communication noises on the distributed optimization dynamics, which has not been systemically studied in the past literature. Also, in sharp contrast to previous work in constrained optimization, we depart from the use of projected gradient flow which is non-smooth and hard to analyze; instead, we design a smooth optimization dynamics which leads to easier convergence analysis and more efficient numerical simulations. Moreover, the multi-scale method presented in this paper generalizes previously known distributed convex optimization algorithms from the fixed network topology to the switching case and the stochastic averaging obtained in this paper is a generalization of the existing deterministic averaging.

Joint Estimation of Multipath Angles and Delays for Millimeter-Wave Cylindrical Arrays with Hybrid Front-ends

Accurate channel parameter estimation is challenging for wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) large-scale hybrid arrays, due to beam squint and much fewer radio frequency (RF) chains than antennas. This paper presents a novel joint delay and angle estimation approach for wideband mmWave fully-connected hybrid uniform cylindrical arrays. We first design a new hybrid beamformer to reduce the dimension of received signals on the horizontal plane by exploiting the convergence of the Bessel function, and to reduce the active beams in the vertical direction through preselection. The important recurrence relationship of the received signals needed for subspace-based angle and delay estimation is preserved, even with substantially fewer RF chains than antennas. Then, linear interpolation is generalized to reconstruct the received signals of the hybrid beamformer, so that the signals can be coherently combined across the whole band to suppress the beam squint. As a result, efficient subspace-based algorithm algorithms can be developed to estimate the angles and delays of multipath components. The estimated delays and angles are further matched and correctly associated with different paths in the presence of non-negligible noises, by putting forth perturbation operations. Simulations show that the proposed approach can approach the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the estimation with a significantly lower computational complexity than existing techniques.

Joint Optimization of Trajectory, Propulsion and Thrust Powers for Covert UAV-on-UAV Video Tracking and Surveillance

Autonomous tracking of suspicious unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by legitimate monitoring UAVs (or monitors) can be crucial to public safety and security. It is non-trivial to optimize the trajectory of a monitor while conceiving its monitoring intention, due to typically non-convex propulsion and thrust power functions. This paper presents a novel framework to jointly optimize the propulsion and thrust powers, as well as the 3D trajectory of a solar-powered monitor which conducts covert, video-based, UAV-on-UAV tracking and surveillance. A multi-objective problem is formulated to minimize the energy consumption of the monitor and maximize a weighted sum of distance keeping and altitude changing, which measures the disguising of the monitor. Based on the practical power models of the UAV propulsion, thrust and hovering, and the model of the harvested solar power, the problem is non-convex and intangible for existing solvers. We convexify the propulsion power by variable substitution, and linearize the solar power. With successive convex approximation, the resultant problem is then transformed with tightened constraints and efficiently solved by the proximal difference-of-convex algorithm with extrapolation in polynomial time. The proposed scheme can be also applied online. Extensive simulations corroborate the merits of the scheme, as compared to baseline schemes with partial or no disguising.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Multi-User Millimeter-Wave Communications for Coverage Enhancement

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is envisioned as a promising solution for controlling radio propagation environments in future wireless systems. In this paper, we propose a distributed intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-user millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where IRSs are exploited to enhance the mmWave signal coverage when direct links between base station and users are unavailable. First, a joint active and passive beamforming problem is established for weighted sum-rate maximization. Then, an alternating iterative algorithm with closed-form expressions is proposed to tackle the challenging non-convex problem, thereby decoupling the active and passive beamforming variables. Moreover, we design a constraint relaxation technique to address the unit modulus constraints pertaining to the IRS. Numerical results demonstrate that the distributed IRS can potentially enhance the communication performance of existing wireless systems.

Tensor-based Multi-dimensional Wideband Channel Estimation for mmWave Hybrid Cylindrical Arrays

Channel estimation is challenging for hybrid millimeter wave (mmWave) large-scale antenna arrays which are promising in 5G/B5G applications. The challenges are associated with angular resolution losses resulting from hybrid front-ends, beam squinting, and susceptibility to the receiver noises. Based on tensor signal processing, this paper presents a novel multi-dimensional approach to channel parameter estimation with large-scale mmWave hybrid uniform circular cylindrical arrays (UCyAs) which are compact in size and immune to mutual coupling but known to suffer from infinite-dimensional array responses and intractability. We design a new resolution-preserving hybrid beamformer and a low-complexity beam squinting suppression method, and reveal the existence of shift-invariance relations in the tensor models of received array signals at the UCyA. Exploiting these relations, we propose a new tensor-based subspace estimation algorithm to suppress the receiver noises in all dimensions (time, frequency, and space). The algorithm can accurately estimate the channel parameters from both coherent and incoherent signals. Corroborated by the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB), simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to achieve substantially higher estimation accuracy than existing matrix-based techniques, with a comparable computational complexity.

Analysis and Optimization of Service Delay for Multi-quality Videos in Multi-tier Heterogeneous Network with Random Caching

Aiming to minimize service delay, we propose a new random caching scheme in device-to-device (D2D)-assisted heterogeneous network. To support diversified viewing qualities of multimedia video services, each video file is encoded into a base layer (BL) and multiple enhancement layers (ELs) by scalable video coding (SVC). A super layer, including the BL and several ELs, is transmitted to every user. We define and quantify the service delay of multi-quality videos by deriving successful transmission probabilities when a user is served by a D2D helper, a small-cell base station (SBS) and a macro-cell base station (MBS). We formulate a delay minimization problem subject to the limited cache sizes of D2D helpers and SBSs. The structure of the optimal solutions to the problem is revealed, and then an improved standard gradient projection method is designed to effectively obtain the solutions. Both theoretical analysis and Monte-Carlo simulations validate the successful transmission probabilities. Compared with three benchmark caching policies, the proposed SVC-based random caching scheme is superior in terms of reducing the service delay.

Nested Hybrid Cylindrical Array Design and DoA Estimation for Massive IoT Networks

Reducing cost and power consumption while maintaining high network access capability is a key physical-layer requirement of massive Internet of Things (mIoT) networks. Deploying a hybrid array is a cost- and energy-efficient way to meet the requirement, but would penalize system degree of freedom (DoF) and channel estimation accuracy. This is because signals from multiple antennas are combined by a radio frequency (RF) network of the hybrid array. This paper presents a novel hybrid uniform circular cylindrical array (UCyA) for mIoT networks. We design a nested hybrid beamforming structure based on sparse array techniques and propose the corresponding channel estimation method based on the second-order channel statistics. As a result, only a small number of RF chains are required to preserve the DoF of the UCyA. We also propose a new tensor-based two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm tailored for the proposed hybrid array. The algorithm suppresses the noise components in all tensor modes and operates on the signal data model directly, hence improving estimation accuracy with an affordable computational complexity. Corroborated by a Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) analysis, simulation results show that the proposed hybrid UCyA array and the DoA estimation algorithm can accurately estimate the 2-D DoAs of a large number of IoT devices.

Cooling-Aware Resource Allocation and Load Management for Mobile Edge Computing Systems

Driven by explosive computation demands of Internet of Things (IoT), mobile edge computing (MEC) provides a promising technique to enhance the computation capability for mobile users. In this paper, we propose a joint resource allocation and load management mechanism in an MEC system with wireless power transfer (WPT), by jointly optimizing the transmit power for WPT, the local/edge computing load, the offloading time, and the frequencies of the central processing units (CPUs) at the access point (AP) and the users. To achieve an energy-efficient and sustainable WPT-MEC system, we minimize the total energy consumption of the AP, while meeting computation latency requirements. Cooling energy which is non-negligible, is taken into account in minimizing the energy consumption of the MEC system. By rigorously orchestrating the state-of-the-art optimization techniques, we design an iterative algorithm and obtain the optimal solution in a semi-closed form. Based on the solution, interesting properties and insights are summarized. Extensive numerical tests show that the proposed algorithm can save up to 90.4% the energy of existing benchmarks.

Multibeam Optimization for Joint Communication and Radio Sensing Using Analog Antenna Arrays

Multibeam technology enables the use of two or more subbeams for joint communication and radio sensing, to meet different requirements of beamwidth and pointing directions. Generating and optimizing multibeam subject to the requirements is critical and challenging, particularly for systems using analog arrays. This paper develops optimal solutions to a range of multibeam design problems, where both communication and sensing are considered. We first study the optimal combination of two pre-generated subbeams, and their beamforming vectors, using a combining phase coefficient. Closed-form optimal solutions are derived to the constrained optimization problems, where the received signal powers for communication and the beamforming waveforms are alternatively used as the objective and constraint functions. We also develop global optimization methods which directly find optimal solutions for a single beamforming vector. By converting the original intractable complex NP-hard global optimization problems to real quadratically constrained quadratic programs, near-optimal solutions are obtained using semidefinite relaxation techniques. Extensive simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed constrained multibeam generation and optimization methods.

Waveform Optimization for MIMO Joint Communication and Radio Sensing Systems with Training Overhead

In this paper, we study optimal waveform design to maximize mutual information (MI) for a joint communication and (radio) sensing (JCAS, a.k.a., radar-communication) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink system. We consider a typical packet-based signal structure which includes training and data symbols. We first derive the conditional MI for both sensing and communication under correlated channels by considering the training overhead and channel estimation error (CEE). Then, we derive a lower bound for the channel estimation error and optimize the power allocation between the training and data symbols to minimize the CEE. Based on the optimal power allocation, we provide optimal waveform design methods for three scenarios, including maximizing MI for communication only and for sensing only, and maximizing a weighted sum MI for both communication and sensing. We also present extensive simulation results that provide insights on waveform design and validate the effectiveness of the proposed designs.
