Reinforcement Learning Driven Adaptive VR Streaming with Optical Flow Based QoE

With the merit of containing full panoramic content in one camera, Virtual Reality (VR) and 360-degree videos have attracted more and more attention in the field of industrial cloud manufacturing and training. Industrial Internet of Things (IoT), where many VR terminals needed to be online at the same time, can hardly guarantee VR's bandwidth requirement. However, by making use of users' quality of experience (QoE) awareness factors, including the relative moving speed and depth difference between the viewpoint and other content, bandwidth consumption can be reduced. In this paper, we propose OFB-VR (Optical Flow Based VR), an interactive method of VR streaming that can make use of VR users' QoE awareness to ease the bandwidth pressure. The Just-Noticeable Difference through Optical Flow Estimation (JND-OFE) is explored to quantify users' awareness of quality distortion in 360-degree videos. Accordingly, a novel 360-degree videos QoE metric based on PSNR and JND-OFE (PSNR-OF) is proposed. With the help of PSNR-OF, OFB-VR proposes a versatile-size tiling scheme to lessen the tiling overhead. A Reinforcement Learning(RL) method is implemented to make use of historical data to perform Adaptive BitRate(ABR). For evaluation, we take two prior VR streaming schemes, Pano and Plato, as baselines. Vast evaluations show that our system can increase the mean PSNR-OF score by 9.5-15.8% while maintaining the same rebuffer ratio compared with Pano and Plato in a fluctuate LTE bandwidth dataset. Evaluation results show that OFB-VR is a promising prototype for actual interactive industrial VR. A prototype of OFB-VR can be found in https://github.com/buptexplorers/OFB-VR.

The effect of Coulomb field on laser-induced ultrafast imaging methods

By performing a joint theoretical and experimental investigation on the high-order above-threshold ionization (HATI) spectrum, the dominant role of the 3rd-return-recollision trajectories in the region near the cutoff due to the ionic Coulomb field is identified. This invalidates the key assumption adopted in the conventional laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) approach that the 1st-returnrecollision trajectories dominate the spectrum according to strong field approximation (SFA). Our results show that the incident (return) electron beams produced by the 1st and 3rd returns possess distinct characteristics of beam energy, beam diameter and temporal evolution law due to the influence of Coulomb field, and therefore the extracted results in the LIED will be altered if the significance of the 3rd-return-recollision trajectories is properly considered in the analysis. Such Coulomb field effect should be taken into account in all kinds of laser-induced imaging schemes based on recollision.

Low-Energy Interference Structure with Attosecond Temporal Resolution

Accessing precisely to the phase variation of electronic wave-packet (EWP) provides unprecedented spatiotemporal information of microworld. A radial interference pattern at near-zero energy has been widely observed in experiments of strong-field photoionization. However, the underlying physical picture of this interference pattern is still under debate. Here we report an experimental and theoretical investigation of this low-energy interference structure (LEIS) in mid-infrared laser fields. We clarify that the LEIS arises due to the soft-recollision mechanism, which was previously found to play a pivotal role in producing the pronounced low-energy structure. Specifically, the LEIS is induced by the interference between direct and soft-recollision EWPs launched within a 1/18 laser-cycle time scale in our experiments. Moreover, the observation of LEIS is independent of laser wavelength and specific atomic targets. Our result opens a promising new avenue for retrieving the structure and dynamics of EWPs in atoms and molecules with attosecond time resolution.

The role of Web of Science publications in China's tenure system

Tenure provides a permanent position to faculty in higher education institutions. In North America, it is granted to those who have established a record of excellence in research, teaching and services in a limited period. However, in China, research excellence represented by the number of Web of Science publications is highly weighted in the tenure assessment compared to excellence in teaching and services, but this has never been systematically investigated. By analyzing the tenure assessment documents from Chinese universities, this study reveals the role of Web of Science publications in China tenure system and presents the landscape of the tenure assessment process in Chinese higher education institutions.

An SDN-Based Transmission Protocol with In-Path Packet Caching and Retransmission

In this paper, a comprehensive software-defined networking (SDN) based transmission protocol (SDTP) is presented for fifth generation (5G) communication networks, where an SDN controller gathers network state information from the physical network to improve data transmission efficiency between end hosts, with in-path packet retransmission. In the SDTP, we first develop a new two-way handshake mechanism for connection establishment between a pair of end host. With the aid of SDN control module, signaling exchanges for establishing E2E connections are migrated to the control plane to improve resource utilization in the data plane. A new SDTP packet header format is designed to support efficient data transmission with in-path packet caching and packet retransmission. Based on the new data packet format, a novel in-path receiver-based packet loss detection and caching-based packet retransmission scheme is proposed to achieve in-path fast recovery of lost packets. Extensive simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed protocol in terms of low connection establishment delay and low end-to-end packet transmission delay.

Correlated Anomaly Detection from Large Streaming Data

Correlated anomaly detection (CAD) from streaming data is a type of group anomaly detection and an essential task in useful real-time data mining applications like botnet detection, financial event detection, industrial process monitor, etc. The primary approach for this type of detection in previous researches is based on principal score (PS) of divided batches or sliding windows by computing top eigenvalues of the correlation matrix, e.g. the Lanczos algorithm. However, this paper brings up the phenomenon of principal score degeneration for large data set, and then mathematically and practically prove current PS-based methods are likely to fail for CAD on large-scale streaming data even if the number of correlated anomalies grows with the data size at a reasonable rate; in reality, anomalies tend to be the minority of the data, and this issue can be more serious. We propose a framework with two novel randomized algorithms rPS and gPS for better detection of correlated anomalies from large streaming data of various correlation strength. The experiment shows high and balanced recall and estimated accuracy of our framework for anomaly detection from a large server log data set and a U.S. stock daily price data set in comparison to direct principal score evaluation and some other recent group anomaly detection algorithms. Moreover, our techniques significantly improve the computation efficiency and scalability for principal score calculation.

Closed-loop Control of Compensation Point in the K-Rb-$^{21}$Ne Comagnetometer

We investigate the real-time closed-loop control of compensation point in the K-Rb-$^{21}$Ne comagnetometer operated in the spin-exchange relaxation-free regime. By locking the electron resonance, the alkali metal electrons are free from the fluctuations of the longitudinal ambient magnetic field and nuclear magnetization, which could improve the systematic stability, enlarge the linear measuring range, and suppress the cross-talk error of the comagnetometer. This is the first demonstration of closed-loop control of magnetic field in the single nuclear species comagnetometer, which will be of great significance for rotation sensing as gyroscopes and other high precision metrology applications of the comagnetometer.

Air-Ground Integrated Vehicular Network Slicing with Content Pushing and Caching

In this paper, an Air-Ground Integrated VEhicular Network (AGIVEN) architecture is proposed, where the aerial High Altitude Platforms (HAPs) proactively push contents to vehicles through large-area broadcast while the ground roadside units (RSUs) provide high-rate unicast services on demand. To efficiently manage the multi-dimensional heterogeneous resources, a service-oriented network slicing approach is introduced, where the AGIVEN is virtually divided into multiple slices and each slice supports a specific application with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). Specifically, the fundamental problem of multi-resource provisioning in AGIVEN slicing is investigated, by taking into account typical vehicular applications of location-based map and popularity-based content services. For the location-based map service, the capability of HAP-vehicle proactive pushing is derived with respect to the HAP broadcast rate and vehicle cache size, wherein a saddle point exists indicating the optimal communication-cache resource trading. For the popular contents of common interests, the average on-board content hit ratio is obtained, with HAPs pushing newly generated contents to keep on-board cache fresh. Then, the minimal RSU transmission rate is derived to meet the average delay requirements of each slice. The obtained analytical results reveal the service-dependent resource provisioning and trading relationships among RSU transmission rate, HAP broadcast rate, and vehicle cache size, which provides guidelines for multi-resource network slicing in practice. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed AGIVEN network slicing approach matches the multi-resources across slices, whereby the RSU transmission rate can be saved by 40% while maintaining the same QoS.

The polarization and the fundamental sensitivity of $^{39}$K ($^{133}$Cs)-$^{85}$Rb-$^{4}$He hybrid optical pumping spin exchange relaxation free atomic magnetometers

The hybrid optical pumping spin exchange relaxation free (SERF) atomic magnetometers can realize ultrahigh sensitivity measurement of magnetic field and inertia. We have studied the $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization of two types of hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometers based on $^{\text{39}}$K-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He and $^{\text{133}}$Cs-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He respectively. Then we found that $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization varies with the number density of buffer gas $^{\text{4}}$He and quench gas N$_{\text{2}}$, pumping rate of pump beam and cell temperature respectively, which will provide an experimental guide for the design of the magnetometer. We obtain a general formula on the fundamental sensitivity of the hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometer due to shot-noise. The formula describes that the fundamental sensitivity of the magnetometer varies with the number density of buffer gas and quench gas, the pumping rate of pump beam, external magnetic field, cell effective radius, measurement volume, cell temperature and measurement time. We obtain a highest fundamental sensitivity of $1.5073$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$ ($1$ $aT=10^{-18}$ $T$) with $^{\text{39}}$K-$^{\text{85}}$Rb-$^{\text{4}}$He magnetometer between above two types of magnetometers when $^{\text{85}}$Rb polarization is $0.1116$. We estimate the fundamental sensitivity limit of the hybrid optical pumping SERF magnetometer to be superior to $1.8359\times10^{-2}$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$, which is higher than the shot-noise-limited sensitivity of $1$ $aT/Hz^{1/2}$ of K SERF atomic magnetometer.

Near-threshold photoelectron holography beyond the strong-field approximation

We study photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) near the ionization threshold with a newly developed Coulomb quantum-orbit strong-field approximation (CQSFA) theory. The CQSFA simulations present an excellent agreement with the result from time-dependent Schrödinger equation method. We show that the low-energy fan-shaped structure in the PADs corresponds to a subcycle time-resolved holographic structure and stems from the significant influence of the Coulomb potential on the phase of the forward-scattering electron trajectories, which affects different momenta and scattering angles unequally. For the first time, our work provides a direct explanation of how the fan-shaped structure is formed, based on the quantum interference of direct and forward-scattered orbits.

Magnetically guided Cesium interferometer for inertial sensing

In this paper we demonstrate a magnetically guided Cesium (Cs) atom interferometer in the Talbot-Lau regime for inertial sensing with two interferometer schemes, Mach-Zenhder and Ramsey-Borde. The recoil frequency of the Cs atoms and the acceleration along the waveguide symmetry axis is measured. An acceleration measurement uncertainty of $7\times10^{-5}$ m/s$^{2}$ is achieved. We also realize an enclosed area of $0.018$ mm$^{2}$ for rotation measurement. As the first reported magnetically guided Cs atom interferometer, the system limitation and its advantages are discussed.

Attosecond Interference Induced by Coulomb-Field-Driven Transverse Backward-Scattering Electron Wave-Packets

A novel and universal interference structure is found in the photoelectron momentum distribution of atoms in intense infrared laser field. Theoretical analysis shows that this structure can be attributed to a new form of Coulomb-field-driven backward-scattering of photoelectrons in the direction perpendicular to the laser field, in contrast to the conventional rescattering along the laser polarization direction. This transverse backward-scattering process is closely related to a family of photoelectrons initially ionized within a time interval of less than 200 attosecond around the crest of the laser electric field. Those electrons, acquiring near-zero return energy in the laser field, will be pulled back solely by the ionic Coulomb field and backscattered in the transverse direction. Moreover, this rescattering process mainly occurs at the first or the second return times, giving rise to different phases of the photoelectrons. The interference between these photoelectrons leads to unique curved interference fringes which are observable for most current intense field experiments, opening a new way to record the electron dynamics in atoms and molecules on a time scale much shorter than an optical cycle.

Perfect-fluid behavior of a dilute Fermi gas near unitary

We present an ab initio calculation of the shear viscosity as a function of interaction strength in a two-component unpolarized Fermi gas near the unitary limit, within a finite temperature quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) framework and using the Kubo linear-response formalism. The shear viscosity decreases as we tune the interaction strength 1/ak_F from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer side of the Feshbach resonance towards Bose-Einstein condensation limit and it acquires the smallest value for 1/ak_F approx 0.4, with a minimum value of (eta/s)_min approx 0.2 hbar/k_B, which is about twice as small as the value reported for experiments in quark-gluon plasma (eta/s)_QGP lesssim 0.4 hbar/k_B. The Fermi gas near unitarity thus emerges as the most "perfect fluid" observed so far in nature. The clouds of dilute Fermi gas near unitarity exhibit the unusual attribute that, for the sizes realized so far in the laboratory or larger (less than 10^9 atoms), can sustain quantum turbulence below the critical temperature, but at the same time the classical turbulence is suppressed in the normal phase.

Exploring Task Mappings on Heterogeneous MPSoCs using a Bias-Elitist Genetic Algorithm

Exploration of task mappings plays a crucial role in achieving high performance in heterogeneous multi-processor system-on-chip (MPSoC) platforms. The problem of optimally mapping a set of tasks onto a set of given heterogeneous processors for maximal throughput has been known, in general, to be NP-complete. The problem is further exacerbated when multiple applications (i.e., bigger task sets) and the communication between tasks are also considered. Previous research has shown that Genetic Algorithms (GA) typically are a good choice to solve this problem when the solution space is relatively small. However, when the size of the problem space increases, classic genetic algorithms still suffer from the problem of long evolution times. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel bias-elitist genetic algorithm that is guided by domain-specific heuristics to speed up the evolution process. Experimental results reveal that our proposed algorithm is able to handle large scale task mapping problems and produces high-quality mapping solutions in only a short time period.
