First Lattice QCD determination of semileptonic decays of charmed-strange baryons $Ξ_c$

While the standard model is the most successfully theory to describe all interactions and constituents in elementary particle physics, it has been constantly examined for over four decades. Weak decays of charm quarks can measure the coupling strength of quarks in different families and serve as an ideal probe for CP violation. As the lowest charm-strange baryons with three different flavors, $Ξ_c$ baryons (made of $csu$ or $csd$) have been extensively studied in experiments at the large hadron collider and in electron-positron collision. However the lack of reliable knowledge in theory becomes the unavoidable obstacle in the way. In this work, we use the state-of-the-art Lattice QCD techniques, and generate 2+1 clover fermion ensembles with two lattice spacings, $a=(0.108{\rm fm},0.080{\rm fm})$. We then present the first {\it ab-initio} lattice QCD determination of form factors governing $Ξ_{c}\to Ξ\ell^+ν_{\ell}$, analogous with the notable $β$-decay of nuclei. Our theoretical results for decay widths are consistent with and about two times more precise than the latest measurements by ALICE and Belle collaborations. Together with experimental measurements, we independently determine the quark-mixing matrix element $|V_{cs}|$, which is found in good agreement with other determinations.

End-to-End Jet Classification of Boosted Top Quarks with the CMS Open Data

We describe a novel application of the end-to-end deep learning technique to the task of discriminating top quark-initiated jets from those originating from the hadronization of a light quark or a gluon. The end-to-end deep learning technique combines deep learning algorithms and low-level detector representation of the high-energy collision event. In this study, we use low-level detector information from the simulated CMS Open Data samples to construct the top jet classifiers. To optimize classifier performance we progressively add low-level information from the CMS tracking detector, including pixel detector reconstructed hits and impact parameters, and demonstrate the value of additional tracking information even when no new spatial structures are added. Relying only on calorimeter energy deposits and reconstructed pixel detector hits, the end-to-end classifier achieves an AUC score of 0.975$\pm$0.002 for the task of classifying boosted top quark jets. After adding derived track quantities, the classifier AUC score increases to 0.9824$\pm$0.0013, serving as the first performance benchmark for these CMS Open Data samples. We additionally provide a timing performance comparison of different processor unit architectures for training the network.

CHANG-ES. XXIV. First Detection of A Radio Nuclear Ring and Potential LLAGN in NGC 5792

We report the discoveries of a nuclear ring of diameter 10$\arcsec$ ($\sim$1.5 kpc) and a potential low luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN) in the radio continuum emission map of the edge-on barred spiral galaxy NGC~5792. These discoveries are based on the Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies - an Expanded Very Large Array (VLA) Survey, as well as subsequent VLA observations of sub-arcsecond resolution. Using a mixture of H$α$ and 24 $μ$m calibration, we disentangle the thermal and non-thermal radio emission of the nuclear region, and derive a star formation rate (SFR) of $\sim 0.4~M_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$. We find that the nuclear ring is dominated by non-thermal synchrotron emission. The synchrotron-based SFR is about three times of the mixture-based SFR. This result indicates that the nuclear ring underwent more intense star-forming activity in the past, and now its star formation is in the low state. The sub-arcsecond VLA images resolve six individual knots on the nuclear ring. The equipartition magnetic field strength $B_{\rm eq}$ of the knots varies from 77 to 88 $μ$G. The radio ring surrounds a point-like faint radio core of $S_{\rm 6GHz}=(16\pm4)$ $μ$Jy with polarized lobes at the center of NGC~5792, which suggests an LLAGN with an Eddington ratio $\sim10^{-5}$. This radio nuclear ring is reminiscent of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galaxy. Both of them consist of a nuclear ring and LLAGN.

Nuclear mass table in deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum: I. even-even nuclei

Ground-state properties of even-even nuclei with $8\le Z\le120$ from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line have been investigated using the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) with the density functional PC-PK1. With the effects of deformation and continuum included simultaneously, 2583 even-even nuclei are predicted to be bound. The calculated binding energies, two-nucleon separation energies, root-mean-square (rms) radii of neutron, proton, matter, and charge distributions, quadrupole deformations, and neutron and proton Fermi surfaces are tabulated and compared with available experimental data. The rms deviation from the 637 mass data is 1.518 MeV, providing one of the best microscopic descriptions for nuclear masses. The drip lines obtained from DRHBc calculations are compared with other calculations, including the spherical relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) and triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (TRHB) calculations with PC-PK1. The deformation and continuum effects on the limits of the nuclear landscape are discussed. Possible peninsulas consisting of bound nuclei beyond the two-neutron drip line are predicted. The systematics of the two-nucleon separation energies, two-nucleon gaps, rms radii, quadrupole deformations, potential energy curves, neutron densities, neutron mean-field potentials, and pairing energies in the DRHBc calculations are also discussed. In addition, the $α$ decay energies extracted are in good agreement with available data.

ThumbTrak: Recognizing Micro-finger Poses Using a Ring with Proximity Sensing

ThumbTrak is a novel wearable input device that recognizes 12 micro-finger poses in real-time. Poses are characterized by the thumb touching each of the 12 phalanges on the hand. It uses a thumb-ring, built with a flexible printed circuit board, which hosts nine proximity sensors. Each sensor measures the distance from the thumb to various parts of the palm or other fingers. ThumbTrak uses a support-vector-machine (SVM) model to classify finger poses based on distance measurements in real-time. A user study with ten participants showed that ThumbTrak could recognize 12 micro finger poses with an average accuracy of 93.6%. We also discuss potential opportunities and challenges in applying ThumbTrak in real-world applications.

Enhancing Counterfactual Classification via Self-Training

Unlike traditional supervised learning, in many settings only partial feedback is available. We may only observe outcomes for the chosen actions, but not the counterfactual outcomes associated with other alternatives. Such settings encompass a wide variety of applications including pricing, online marketing and precision medicine. A key challenge is that observational data are influenced by historical policies deployed in the system, yielding a biased data distribution. We approach this task as a domain adaptation problem and propose a self-training algorithm which imputes outcomes with categorical values for finite unseen actions in the observational data to simulate a randomized trial through pseudolabeling, which we refer to as Counterfactual Self-Training (CST). CST iteratively imputes pseudolabels and retrains the model. In addition, we show input consistency loss can further improve CST performance which is shown in recent theoretical analysis of pseudolabeling. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms on both synthetic and real datasets.

Glueballs at Physical Pion Mass

We study glueballs on two $N_f=2+1$ RBC/UKQCD gauge ensembles with physical quark masses at two lattice spacings. The statistical uncertainties of the glueball correlation functions are considerably reduced through the cluster decomposition error reduction (CDER) method. The Bethe-Salpeter wave functions are obtained for the scalar, tensor and pseudoscalar glueballs by using spatially extended glueball operators defined through the gauge potential $A_μ(x)$ in the Coulomb gauge. These wave functions show similar features of non-relativistic two-gluon systems, and they are used to optimize the signals of the related correlation functions at the early time regions. Consequently, the ground state masses can be extracted precisely. To the extent that the excited state contamination is not important, our calculation gives glueball masses at the physical pion mass for the first time.

M17 MIR: A massive protostar with multiple accretion Outbursts

We report the discovery of a massive protostar M17~MIR embedded in a hot molecular core in M17. The multiwavelength data obtained during 1993--2019 show significant mid-IR (MIR) variations, which can be split into three stages: the decreasing phase during 1993.03--mid-2004, the quiescent phase from mid-2004 to mid-2010, and the rebrightening phase from mid-2010 until now. The variation of the 22\,GHz H$_2$O maser emission, together with the MIR variation, indicates an enhanced disk accretion rate onto M17~MIR during the decreasing and rebrightening phases. Radiative transfer modeling of the spectral energy distributions of M17~MIR in the 2005 epoch (quiescent) and 2017 epoch (accretion outburst) constrains the basic stellar parameters of M17~MIR, which is an intermediate-mass protostar (M~5.4 Msun) with accretion rate ~1.1x10^-5 Msun in the 2005 epoch and ~1.7x10^-3 Msun/yr in the 2017 epoch. The enhanced accretion rate during outburst induces the luminosity outburst $ΔL\approx7600 $Lsun. In the accretion outburst, a larger stellar radius is required to produce accretion rate consistent with the value estimated from the kinematics of water masers. M17 MIR shows two accretion outbursts ($Δt\sim 9-20$ yr) with outburst magnitudes of 2 mag, separated by a 6 yr quiescent phase. The accretion outbusrt occupies 83\% of the time over 26 yr. The accretion rate in outburst is variable with amplitude much lower than the contrast between quiescent and outburst phases. The extreme youth of M17 MIR suggests that minor accretion bursts are frequent in the earliest stages of massive star formation.

iShape: A First Step Towards Irregular Shape Instance Segmentation

In this paper, we introduce a brand new dataset to promote the study of instance segmentation for objects with irregular shapes. Our key observation is that though irregularly shaped objects widely exist in daily life and industrial scenarios, they received little attention in the instance segmentation field due to the lack of corresponding datasets. To fill this gap, we propose iShape, an irregular shape dataset for instance segmentation. iShape contains six sub-datasets with one real and five synthetics, each represents a scene of a typical irregular shape. Unlike most existing instance segmentation datasets of regular objects, iShape has many characteristics that challenge existing instance segmentation algorithms, such as large overlaps between bounding boxes of instances, extreme aspect ratios, and large numbers of connected components per instance. We benchmark popular instance segmentation methods on iShape and find their performance drop dramatically. Hence, we propose an affinity-based instance segmentation algorithm, called ASIS, as a stronger baseline. ASIS explicitly combines perception and reasoning to solve Arbitrary Shape Instance Segmentation including irregular objects. Experimental results show that ASIS outperforms the state-of-the-art on iShape. Dataset and code are available at https://ishape.github.io

Applying explicit symplectic integrator to study chaos of charged particles around magnetized Kerr black hole

In a recent work of Wu, Wang, Sun and Liu, a second-order explicit symplectic integrator was proposed for the integrable Kerr spacetime geometry. It is still suited for simulating the nonintegrable dynamics of charged particles moving around the Kerr black hole embedded in an external magnetic field. Its successful construction is due to the contribution of a time transformation. The algorithm exhibits a good long-term numerical performance in stable Hamiltonian errors and computational efficiency. As its application, the dynamics of order and chaos of charged particles is surveyed. In some circumstances, an increase of the dragging effects of the spacetime seems to weaken the extent of chaos from the global phase-space structure on Poincare sections. However, an increase of the magnetic parameter strengthens the chaotic properties. On the other hand, fast Lyapunov indicators show that there is no universal rule for the dependence of the transition between different dynamical regimes on the black hole spin. The dragging effects of the spacetime do not always weaken the extent of chaos from a local point of view.

Color halo scenario of charmonium-like hybrids

The internal structures of $J^{PC}=1^{--}, (0,1,2)^{-+}$ charmonium-like hybrids are investigated under lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. We define the Bethe-Salpeter wave function $Φ_n(r)$ in the Coulomb gauge as the matrix element of a spatially extended hybrid-like operator $\bar{c}{c}g$ between the vacuum and $n$-th state for each $J^{PC}$ with $r$ being the spatial separation between a localized $\bar{c}c$ component and the chromomagnetic strength tensor. These wave functions exhibit some similarities for states with the aforementioned different quantum numbers, and their $r$-behaviors (no node for the ground states and one node for the first excited states) imply that $r$ can be a meaningful dynamical variable for these states. Additionally, the mass splittings of the ground states and first excited states of charmonium-like hybrids in these channels are obtained for the first time to be approximately 1.2-1.4 GeV. These results do not support the flux-tube description of heavy-quarkonium-like hybrids in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. In contrast, a charmonium-like hybrid can be viewed as a "color halo" charmonium for which a relatively localized color octet $\bar{c}c$ is surrounded by gluonic degrees of freedom, which can readily decay into a charmonium state along with one or more light hadrons. The color halo picture is compatible with the decay properties of $Y(4260)$ and suggests LHCb and BelleII to search for $(0,1,2)^{-+}$ charmonium-like hybrids in $χ_{c0,1,2}η$ and $J/ψω(ϕ)$ final states.

Quantum Non-demolition Measurements in the Relativistic Dirac Oscillator

We investigate the feasibility of performing quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements in relativistic quantum systems, using the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator as a specific example. We derive general expressions for its QND observables and find that they are intricate combinations of the position, momentum, and spin operators, which makes them challenging to realize experimentally in general. However, the situation is considerably simplified in both the weakly and strongly relativistic limits, where their experimental realization will be possible.

Proactive Rolling-Horizon based Scheduling of Hydrogen Systems for Resilient Power Grids

Deploying distributed energy resources (DERs) and other smart grid technologies have increased the complexity of power grids and made them more vulnerable to natural disasters and cyber-physical-human (CPH) threats. To deal with these extreme events, proactive plans are required by utilities to minimize the damages caused by CPH threats. This paper proposes a proactive rolling-horizon-based scheme for the resilience-oriented operation of hydrogen (H2) systems in integrated distribution and transmission networks. The proposed framework is a bi-level model in which the upper-level is focused on distribution system operation in both normal and emergency operation modes, and the lower-level problem accounts for the transmission network operation. Two preeminent aspects of H2 systems are considered in this paper, 1) to show the flexibility of H2 systems, capacity-based demand response signals are considered for electrolyzers, stationary fuel cell (FC) units, and H2 storage tanks are considered in both normal and emergency operation modes; 2) unlike the batteries which can only charge and discharge energy based on maximum duration times and power ratings, H2 systems can be considered as the flexible long-term energy storage by storing H2 for days and supplying power to FC in the case of \textit{N-m} outages lasting for more than 10 hours. Moreover, H2 production cost based on water electrolysis and storage costs is calculated. Simulation results demonstrate that utilities can improve the system-level resilience using H2 systems as long-term backup power resources.

Learning-Based Nonlinear $H^\infty$ Control via Game-Theoretic Differential Dynamic Programming

In this work, we present a learning-based nonlinear $H^\infty$ control algorithm that guarantee system performance under learned dynamics and disturbance estimate. The Gaussian Process (GP) regression is utilized to update the nominal dynamics of the system and provide disturbance estimate based on data gathered through interaction with the system. A soft-constrained differential game associated with the disturbance attenuation problem in nonlinear $H^\infty$ control is then formulated to obtain the nonlinear $H^\infty$ controller. The differential game is solved through the min-max Game-Theoretic Differential Dynamic Programming (GT-DDP) algorithm in continuous time. Simulation results on a quadcopter system demonstrate the efficiency of the learning-based control algorithm in handling external disturbances.

Multitask Recalibrated Aggregation Network for Medical Code Prediction

Medical coding translates professionally written medical reports into standardized codes, which is an essential part of medical information systems and health insurance reimbursement. Manual coding by trained human coders is time-consuming and error-prone. Thus, automated coding algorithms have been developed, building especially on the recent advances in machine learning and deep neural networks. To solve the challenges of encoding lengthy and noisy clinical documents and capturing code associations, we propose a multitask recalibrated aggregation network. In particular, multitask learning shares information across different coding schemes and captures the dependencies between different medical codes. Feature recalibration and aggregation in shared modules enhance representation learning for lengthy notes. Experiments with a real-world MIMIC-III dataset show significantly improved predictive performance.

An efficient and secure scheme of verifiable computation for Intel SGX

Cloud computing offers resource-constrained users big-volume data storage and energy-consuming complicated computation. However, owing to the lack of full trust in the cloud, the cloud users prefer privacy-preserving outsourced data computation with correctness verification. However, cryptography-based schemes introduce high computational costs to both the cloud and its users for verifiable computation with privacy preservation, which makes it difficult to support complicated computations in practice. Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) as a trusted execution environment is widely researched in various fields (such as secure data analytics and computation), and is regarded as a promising way to achieve efficient outsourced data computation with privacy preservation over the cloud. But we find two types of threats towards the computation with SGX: Disarranging Data-Related Code threat and Output Tampering and Misrouting threat. In this paper, we depict these threats using formal methods and successfully conduct the two threats on the enclave program constructed by Rust SGX SDK to demonstrate their impacts on the correctness of computations over SGX enclaves. In order to provide countermeasures, we propose an efficient and secure scheme to resist the threats and realize verifiable computation for Intel SGX. We prove the security and show the efficiency and correctness of our proposed scheme through theoretic analysis and extensive experiments. Furthermore, we compare the performance of our scheme with that of some cryptography-based schemes to show its high efficiency.

Construction of explicit symplectic integrators in general relativity. IV. Kerr black holes

In previous papers, explicit symplectic integrators were designed for nonrotating black holes, such as a Schwarzschild black hole. However, they fail to work in the Kerr spacetime because not all variables can be separable, or not all splitting parts have analytical solutions as explicit functions of proper time. To cope with this difficulty, we introduce a time transformation function to the Hamiltonian of Kerr geometry so as to obtain a time-transformed Hamiltonian consisting of five splitting parts, whose analytical solutions are explicit functions of the new coordinate time. The chosen time transformation function can cause time steps to be adaptive, but it is mainly used to implement the desired splitting of the time transformed Hamiltonian. In this manner, new explicit symplectic algorithms are easily available. Unlike Runge Kutta integrators, the newly proposed algorithms exhibit good long term behavior in the conservation of Hamiltonian quantities when appropriate fixed coordinate time steps are considered. They are better than same order implicit and explicit mixed symplectic algorithms and extended phase space explicit symplectic like methods in computational efficiency. The proposed idea on the construction of explicit symplectic integrators is suitable for not only the Kerr metric but also many other relativistic problems, such as a Kerr black hole immersed in a magnetic field, a Kerr Newman black hole with an external magnetic field, axially symmetric core shell systems, and five dimensional black ring metrics.
