Integration of quantum key distribution and gigabit-capable passive optical network based on wavelength-division multiplexing

Classical optical communications may be still the main communications technology for the foreseeable future, so integration of the quantum communication network with existing classical optical communication network is necessary because existing telecommunications infrastructure will be shared. This means multiplexing of quantum key distribution (QKD) and strong classical data signals, delivering quantum signals and classic signals in one fiber. Optical splitters are employed to access each user in a gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON). In a 4-user network the splitter adds at least 6 dB of optical loss to the quantum channel, a 64-user network the splitter adds 18 dB of optical loss to the quantum channel. The optical splitters restrict the transmission distance and performance of QKD. We propose a new integration program of QKD and GPON based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). At the optical splitting point, we use filters to separate the quantum signals and bypass the optical splitter, avoiding losses produced by the optical splitters. This increases the counting rate of the quantum signals states and the signal to noise ratio (SNR) improves, so a higher key generation rate and a longer transmission distance can be obtained with QKD.

Spectrum and Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes of $Ω$ baryons from lattice QCD

The $Ω$ baryons with $J^P=3/2^\pm, 1/2^\pm$ are studied on the lattice in the quenched approximation. Their mass levels are ordered as $M_{3/2^+}<M_{3/2^-}\approx M_{1/2^-}<M_{1/2^+}$, as is expected from the constituent quark model. The mass values are also close to those of the four $Ω$ states observed in experiments, respectively. We calculate the Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes of $Ω(3/2^+)$ and $Ω(1/2^+)$ and find there is a radial node for the $Ω(1/2^+)$ Bethe-Salpeter amplitude, which may imply that $Ω(1/2^+)$ is an orbital excitation of $Ω$ baryons as a member of the $(D,L_N^P)=(70,0_2^+)$ supermultiplet in the $SU(6)\bigotimes O(3)$ quark model description. Our results are helpful for identifying the quantum number of experimentally observed $Ω$ states.

Realization of Two-Dimensional Spin-orbit Coupling for Bose-Einstein Condensates

Cold atoms with laser-induced spin-orbit (SO) interactions provide intriguing new platforms to explore novel quantum physics beyond natural conditions of solids. Recent experiments demonstrated the one-dimensional (1D) SO coupling for boson and fermion gases. However, realization of 2D SO interaction, a much more important task, remains very challenging. Here we propose and experimentally realize, for the first time, 2D SO coupling and topological band with $^{87}$Rb degenerate gas through a minimal optical Raman lattice scheme, without relying on phase locking or fine tuning of optical potentials. A controllable crossover between 2D and 1D SO couplings is studied, and the SO effects and nontrivial band topology are observed by measuring the atomic cloud distribution and spin texture in the momentum space. Our realization of 2D SO coupling with advantages of small heating and topological stability opens a broad avenue in cold atoms to study exotic quantum phases, including the highly-sought-after topological superfluid phases.

Further study on Hunt's hypothesis (H) for Levy processes

Getoor's conjecture that essentially all Levy processes satisfy (H) is a long-standing open problem in potential theory. In the beginning of the paper, we summarize the main results obtained so far for the problem. Then, we present two new necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of (H). Furthermore, we give applications of these new criteria. First, we give explicit constructions of Levy processes satisfying (H) in a context where previously known results could not be applied. Second, we show that a large class of pure jump subordinators can be decomposed into the summation of two independent subordinators such that both of them satisfy (H).

Model Based Reinforcement Learning with Final Time Horizon Optimization

We present one of the first algorithms on model based reinforcement learning and trajectory optimization with free final time horizon. Grounded on the optimal control theory and Dynamic Programming, we derive a set of backward differential equations that propagate the value function and provide the optimal control policy and the optimal time horizon. The resulting policy generalizes previous results in model based trajectory optimization. Our analysis shows that the proposed algorithm recovers the theoretical optimal solution on linear low dimensional problem. Finally we provide application results on nonlinear systems.

Stabilized Nearest Neighbor Classifier and Its Statistical Properties

The stability of statistical analysis is an important indicator for reproducibility, which is one main principle of scientific method. It entails that similar statistical conclusions can be reached based on independent samples from the same underlying population. In this paper, we introduce a general measure of classification instability (CIS) to quantify the sampling variability of the prediction made by a classification method. Interestingly, the asymptotic CIS of any weighted nearest neighbor classifier turns out to be proportional to the Euclidean norm of its weight vector. Based on this concise form, we propose a stabilized nearest neighbor (SNN) classifier, which distinguishes itself from other nearest neighbor classifiers, by taking the stability into consideration. In theory, we prove that SNN attains the minimax optimal convergence rate in risk, and a sharp convergence rate in CIS. The latter rate result is established for general plug-in classifiers under a low-noise condition. Extensive simulated and real examples demonstrate that SNN achieves a considerable improvement in CIS over existing nearest neighbor classifiers, with comparable classification accuracy. We implement the algorithm in a publicly available R package snn.

Probabilistic representations of solutions of elliptic boundary value problem and non-symmetric semigroups

In this paper, we use a probabilistic approach to show that there exists a unique, bounded continuous solution to the Dirichlet boundary value problem for a general class of second order non-symmetric elliptic operators $L$ with singular coefficients, which does not necessarily have the maximum principle. The theory of Dirichlet forms and heat kernel estimates play a crucial role in our approach. A probabilistic representation of the non-symmetric semigroup $\{T_t\}_{t\ge 0}$ generated by $L$ is also given.

Tensor Products of Classifiable C*-algebras

Let ${\cal A}_1$ be the class of all unital separable simple $C^*$-algebras $A$ such that $A\otimes U$ has tracial rank at most one for all UHF-algebras of infinite type. It has been shown that amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras in ${\cal A}_1$ which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem can be classified up to isomorphism by the Elliott invariant. We show that $A\in {\cal A}_1$ if and only if $A\otimes B$ has tracial rank at most one for one of unital simple infinite dimensional AF-algebra $B.$ In fact, we show that $A\in {\cal A}_1$ if and only if $A\otimes B\in {\cal A}_1$ for some unital simple AH-algebra $B.$ Other results regarding the tensor products of $C^*$-algebras in ${\cal A}_1$ are also obtained

IsoDOT Detects Differential RNA-isoform Expression/Usage with respect to a Categorical or Continuous Covariate with High Sensitivity and Specificity

We have developed a statistical method named IsoDOT to assess differential isoform expression (DIE) and differential isoform usage (DIU) using RNA-seq data. Here isoform usage refers to relative isoform expression given the total expression of the corresponding gene. IsoDOT performs two tasks that cannot be accomplished by existing methods: to test DIE/DIU with respect to a continuous covariate, and to test DIE/DIU for one case versus one control. The latter task is not an uncommon situation in practice, e.g., comparing paternal and maternal allele of one individual or comparing tumor and normal sample of one cancer patient. Simulation studies demonstrate the high sensitivity and specificity of IsoDOT. We apply IsoDOT to study the effects of haloperidol treatment on mouse transcriptome and identify a group of genes whose isoform usages respond to haloperidol treatment.

Trade-based Asset Model using Dynamic Junction Tree for Combinatorial Prediction Markets

Prediction markets have demonstrated their value for aggregating collective expertise. Combinatorial prediction markets allow forecasts not only on base events, but also on conditional and/or Boolean combinations of events. We describe a trade-based combinatorial prediction market asset management system, called Dynamic Asset Cluster (DAC), that improves both time and space efficiency over the method of, which maintains parallel junction trees for assets and probabilities. The basic data structure is the asset block, which compactly represents a set of trades made by a user. A user's asset model consists of a set of asset blocks representing the user's entire trade history. A junction tree is created dynamically from the asset blocks to compute a user's minimum and expected assets.

Stochastic Calculus for Markov Processes Associated with Semi-Dirichlet Forms

Let $(\mathcal{E},D(\mathcal{E}))$ be a quasi-regular semi-Dirichlet form and $(X_t)_{t\geq0}$ be the associated Markov process. For $u\in D(\mathcal{E})_{loc}$, denote $A_t^{[u]}:=\tilde{u}(X_{t})-\tilde{u}(X_{0})$ and $F^{[u]}_t:=\sum_{0 1\}}$, where $\tilde{u}$ is a quasi-continuous version of $u$. We show that there exist a unique locally square integrable martingale additive functional $Y^{[u]}$ and a unique continuous local additive functional $Z^{[u]}$ of zero quadratic variation such that $$A_t^{[u]}=Y_t^{[u]}+Z_t^{[u]}+F_t^{[u]}.$$ Further, we define the stochastic integral $\int_0^t\tilde v(X_{s-})dA_s^{[u]}$ for $v\in D(\mathcal{E})_{loc}$ and derive the related Itô's formula.

PenPC: A Two-step Approach to Estimate the Skeletons of High Dimensional Directed Acyclic Graphs

Estimation of the skeleton of a directed acyclic graph (DAG) is of great importance for understanding the underlying DAG and causaleffects can be assessed from the skeleton when the DAG is notidentifiable. We propose a novel method named PenPC toestimate the skeleton of a high-dimensional DAG by a two-stepapproach. We first estimate the non-zero entries of a concentrationmatrix using penalized regression, and then fix the differencebetween the concentration matrix and the skeleton by evaluating aset of conditional independence hypotheses. For high dimensionalproblems where the number of vertices $p$ is in polynomial orexponential scale of sample size $n$, we study the asymptoticproperty of PenPC on two types of graphs: traditionalrandom graphs where all the vertices have the same expected numberof neighbors, and scale-free graphs where a few vertices may have alarge number of neighbors. As illustrated by extensive simulationsand applications on gene expression data of cancer patients, PenPChas higher sensitivity and specificity than the standard-of-the-artmethod, the PC-stable algorithm.

New results on Hunt's hypothesis (H) for Lévy processes

In this paper, we present new results on Hunt's hypothesis (H) for Lévy processes. We start with a comparison result on Lévy processes which implies that big jumps have no effect on the validity of (H). Based on this result and the Kanda-Forst-Rao theorem, we give examples of subordinators satisfying (H). Afterwards we give a new necessary and sufficient condition for (H) and obtain an extended Kanda-Forst-Rao theorem. By virtue of this theorem, we give a new class of Lévy processes satisfying (H). Finally, we construct a type of subordinators that does not satisfy Rao's condition.
