Experimental observation and modeling of the impact of traps on static and analog/HF performance of graphene transistors

The trap-induced hysteresis on the performance of a graphene field-effect transistor is experimentally diminished here by applying consecutive gate-to-source voltage pulses of opposing polarity. This measurement scheme is a practical and suitable approach to obtain reproducible device characteristics. Trap-affected and trap-free experimental data enable a discussion regarding the impact of traps on static and dynamic device performance. An analytical drain current model calibrated with the experimental data enables the study of the traps effects on the channel potential within the device. High-frequency figures of merit and the intrinsic gain of the device obtained from both experimental and synthetic data with and without hysteresis show the importance of considering the generally overlooked impact of traps for analog and high-frequency applications.

Rolling with Random Slipping and Twisting: A Large Deviation Point of View

We study a rolling model from the perspective of probability. More precisely, we consider a Riemannian manifold rolling against Euclidean space, where the rolling is coupled with random slipping and twisting. The system is modelled by a stochastic differential equation of Stratonovich-type driven by semimartingales, on the orthonormal frame bundle. The stability of the system is examined via large deviations. We prove the large deviation principles for the projection curves on the base manifold and their horizontal lifts respectively, provided that the large deviation holds for the random Euclidean curves as semimartingales. The large deviation results for the case of compact manifolds and two special cases of noncompact manifolds are established.

Deep learning for gravitational wave forecasting of neutron star mergers

We introduce deep learning time-series forecasting for gravitational wave detection of binary neutron star mergers. This method enables the identification of these signals in real advanced LIGO data up to 30 seconds before merger. When applied to GW170817, our deep learning forecasting method identifies the presence of this gravitational wave signal 10 seconds before merger. This novel approach requires a single GPU for inference, and may be used as part of an early warning system for time-sensitive multi-messenger searches.

Dynamic aspiration based on Win-Stay-Lose-Learn rule in Spatial Prisoner's Dilemma Gam

Prisoner's dilemma game is the most commonly used model of spatial evolutionary game which is considered as a paradigm to portray competition among selfish individuals. In recent years, Win-Stay-Lose-Learn, a strategy updating rule base on aspiration, has been proved to be an effective model to promote cooperation in spatial prisoner's dilemma game, which leads aspiration to receive lots of attention. But in many research the assumption that individual's aspiration is fixed is inconsistent with recent results from psychology. In this paper, according to Expected Value Theory and Achievement Motivation Theory, we propose a dynamic aspiration model based on Win-Stay-Lose-Learn rule in which individual's aspiration is inspired by its payoff. It is found that dynamic aspiration has a significant impact on the evolution process, and different initial aspirations lead to different results, which are called Stable Coexistence under Low Aspiration, Dependent Coexistence under Moderate aspiration and Defection Explosion under High Aspiration respectively. Furthermore, a deep analysis is performed on the local structures which cause cooperator's existence or defector's expansion, and the evolution process for different parameters including strategy and aspiration. As a result, the intrinsic structures leading to defectors' expansion and cooperators' survival are achieved for different evolution process, which provides a penetrating understanding of the evolution. Compared to fixed aspiration model, dynamic aspiration introduces a more satisfactory explanation on population evolution laws and can promote deeper comprehension for the principle of prisoner's dilemma.

High Throughput Screening of Transition Metal Binuclear Site for N2 Fixation

Great enthusiasm in single atom catalysts (SACs) for the N2 reduction reaction (NRR) has been aroused by the discovery of Metal (M)-Nx as a promising catalytic center. However, the performance of available SACs,including poor activity and selectivity,is far away from the industrial requirement because of the inappropriate adsorption behaviors of the catalytic centers. Through the first principles high throughput screening, we find that the rational construction of Fe-Fe dual atom centered site distributed on graphite carbon nitride (Fe2/gCN) compromises the ability to adsorb N2H and NH2, achieving the best NRR performance among 23 different transition metal (TM) centers. Our results show that Fe2/gCN can achieve a Faradic efficiency of 100% for NH3 production. Impressively, the limiting potential of Fe2/gCN is estimated as low as -0.13 V, which is hitherto the lowest value among the reported theoretical results. Multiple level descriptors (excess electrons on the adsorbed N2 and integrated crystal orbital Hamilton population) shed light on the origin of NRR activity from the view of energy, electronic structure, and basic characteristics. As a ubiquitous issue during electrocatalytic NRR, ammonia contamination originating from the substrate decomposition can be surmounted. Our predictions offer a new platform for electrocatalytic synthesis of NH3, contributing to further elucidate the structure-performance correlations.

Decentralized Provision of Renewable Predictions within a Virtual Power Plant

The mushrooming of distributed energy resources turns end-users from passive price-takers to active market participants. To manage those massive proactive end-users efficiently, virtual power plant (VPP) as an innovative concept emerges. It can provide some necessary information to help consumers improve their profits and trade with the electricity market on behalf of them. One important information that is desired by the consumers is the prediction of renewable outputs inside this VPP. Presently, most VPPs run in a centralized manner, which means the VPP predicts the outputs of all the renewable sources it manages and provides the predictions to every consumer who buys this information. We prove that by providing predictions, the social total surplus can be improved. However, when more consumers and renewables participate in the market, this centralized scheme needs extensive data communication and may jeopardize the privacy of individual stakeholders. In this paper, we propose a decentralized prediction provision algorithm in which consumers from each subregion only buy local predictions and exchange information with the VPP. Convergence is proved under a mild condition, and the demand gap between centralized and decentralized schemes is proved to have zero expectation and bounded variance. Illustrative examples show that the variance of this gap decreases with more consumers and higher uncertainty, and validate the proposed algorithm numerically.

Interlayer Coupling Effect in van der Waals Heterostructures of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Van der Waals (vdW) heterobilayers formed by two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) created a promising platform for various electronic and optical properties. ab initio band results indicate that the band offset of type-II band alignment in TMDCs vdW heterobilayer could be tuned by introducing Janus WSSe monolayer, instead of an external electric field. On the basis of symmetry analysis, the allowed interlayer hopping channels of TMDCs vdW heterobilayer were determined, and a four-level kp model was developed to obtain the interlayer hopping. Results indicate that the interlayer coupling strength could be tuned by interlayer electric polarization featured by various band offsets. Moreover, the difference in the formation mechanism of interlayer valley excitons in different TMDCs vdW heterobilayers with various interlayer hopping strength was also clarified.

Deep Transfer Learning for Star Cluster Classification: I. Application to the PHANGS-HST Survey

We present the results of a proof-of-concept experiment which demonstrates that deep learning can successfully be used for production-scale classification of compact star clusters detected in HST UV-optical imaging of nearby spiral galaxies (D < 20 Mpc) in the PHANGS-HST survey. Given the relatively small nature of existing, human-labelled star cluster samples, we transfer the knowledge of state-of-the-art neural network models for real-object recognition to classify star clusters candidates into four morphological classes. We perform a series of experiments to determine the dependence of classification performance on: neural network architecture (ResNet18 and VGG19-BN); training data sets curated by either a single expert or three astronomers; and the size of the images used for training. We find that the overall classification accuracies are not significantly affected by these choices. The networks are used to classify star cluster candidates in the PHANGS-HST galaxy NGC 1559, which was not included in the training samples. The resulting prediction accuracies are 70%, 40%, 40-50%, 50-70% for class 1, 2, 3 star clusters, and class 4 non-clusters respectively. This performance is competitive with consistency achieved in previously published human and automated quantitative classification of star cluster candidate samples (70-80%, 40-50%, 40-50%, and 60-70%). The methods introduced herein lay the foundations to automate classification for star clusters at scale, and exhibit the need to prepare a standardized dataset of human-labelled star cluster classifications, agreed upon by a full range of experts in the field, to further improve the performance of the networks introduced in this study.

A Spatial Stochastic SIR Model for Transmission Networks with Application to COVID-19 Epidemic in China

Governments around the world have implemented preventive measures against the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In this study, we consider a multivariate discrete-time Markov model to analyze the propagation of COVID-19 across 33 provincial regions in China. This approach enables us to evaluate the effect of mobility restriction policies on the spread of the disease. We use data on daily human mobility across regions and apply the Bayesian framework to estimate the proposed model. The results show that the spread of the disease in China was predominately driven by community transmission within regions and the lockdown policy introduced by local governments curbed the spread of the pandemic. Further, we document that Hubei was only the epicenter of the early epidemic stage. Secondary epicenters, such as Beijing and Guangdong, had already become established by late January 2020, and the disease spread out to connected regions. The transmission from these epicenters substantially declined following the introduction of human mobility restrictions across regions.

Formant Tracking Using Dilated Convolutional Networks Through Dense Connection with Gating Mechanism

Formant tracking is one of the most fundamental problems in speech processing. Traditionally, formants are estimated using signal processing methods. Recent studies showed that generic convolutional architectures can outperform recurrent networks on temporal tasks such as speech synthesis and machine translation. In this paper, we explored the use of Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) for formant tracking. In addition to the conventional implementation, we modified the architecture from three aspects. First, we turned off the "causal" mode of dilated convolution, making the dilated convolution see the future speech frames. Second, each hidden layer reused the output information from all the previous layers through dense connection. Third, we also adopted a gating mechanism to alleviate the problem of gradient disappearance by selectively forgetting unimportant information. The model was validated on the open access formant database VTR. The experiment showed that our proposed model was easy to converge and achieved an overall mean absolute percent error (MAPE) of 8.2% on speech-labeled frames, compared to three competitive baselines of 9.4% (LSTM), 9.1% (Bi-LSTM) and 8.9% (TCN).

Which Kind Is Better in Open-domain Multi-turn Dialog,Hierarchical or Non-hierarchical Models? An Empirical Study

Currently, open-domain generative dialog systems have attracted considerable attention in academia and industry. Despite the success of single-turn dialog generation, multi-turn dialog generation is still a big challenge. So far, there are two kinds of models for open-domain multi-turn dialog generation: hierarchical and non-hierarchical models. Recently, some works have shown that the hierarchical models are better than non-hierarchical models under their experimental settings; meanwhile, some works also demonstrate the opposite conclusion. Due to the lack of adequate comparisons, it's not clear which kind of models are better in open-domain multi-turn dialog generation. Thus, in this paper, we will measure systematically nearly all representative hierarchical and non-hierarchical models over the same experimental settings to check which kind is better. Through extensive experiments, we have the following three important conclusions: (1) Nearly all hierarchical models are worse than non-hierarchical models in open-domain multi-turn dialog generation, except for the HRAN model. Through further analysis, the excellent performance of HRAN mainly depends on its word-level attention mechanism; (2) The performance of other hierarchical models will also obtain a great improvement if integrating the word-level attention mechanism into these models. The modified hierarchical models even significantly outperform the non-hierarchical models; (3) The reason why the word-level attention mechanism is so powerful for hierarchical models is because it can leverage context information more effectively, especially the fine-grained information. Besides, we have implemented all of the models and already released the codes.

Representation Learning of Graphs Using Graph Convolutional Multilayer Networks Based on Motifs

The graph structure is a commonly used data storage mode, and it turns out that the low-dimensional embedded representation of nodes in the graph is extremely useful in various typical tasks, such as node classification, link prediction , etc. However, most of the existing approaches start from the binary relationship (i.e., edges) in the graph and have not leveraged the higher order local structure (i.e., motifs) of the graph. Here, we propose mGCMN -- a novel framework which utilizes node feature information and the higher order local structure of the graph to effectively generate node embeddings for previously unseen data. Through research we have found that different types of networks have different key motifs. And the advantages of our method over the baseline methods have been demonstrated in a large number of experiments on citation network and social network datasets. At the same time, a positive correlation between increase of the classification accuracy and the clustering coefficient is revealed. It is believed that using high order structural information can truly manifest the potential of the network, which will greatly improve the learning efficiency of the graph neural network and promote a brand-new learning mode establishment.

Tutorials on Advanced Optimization Methods

This material provides thorough tutorials on some optimization techniques frequently used in various engineering disciplines, including convex optimization, linearization techniques and mixed-integer linear programming, robust optimization, and equilibrium/game problems. It discusses how to reformulate a difficult (non-convex, multi-agent, min-max) problem to a solver-compatible form (semidefinite program, mixed-integer linear program) via convexification, linearization, and decomposition, so the original problem can be reliably solved by commercial/open-source software. Fundamental algorithms are not the main focus. This material is a good reference for self-learners who have basic knowledge in linear algebra and linear programming. It is one of the main references for an optimization course taught at Tsinghua University.

Estimating the Most Probable Transition Time for Stochastic Dynamical Systems

This work is devoted to the investigation of the most probable transition time between metastable states for stochastic dynamical systems. Such a system is modeled by a stochastic differential equation with non-vanishing Brownian noise, and is restricted in a domain with absorbing boundary. Instead of minimizing the Onsager-Machlup action functional, we examine the maximum probability that the solution process of the system stays in a neighborhood (or a tube) of a transition path, in order to characterize the most probable transition path. We first establish the exponential decay lower bound and a power law decay upper bound for the maximum of this probability. Based on these estimates, we further derive the lower and upper bounds for the most probable transition time, under suitable conditions. Finally, we illustrate our results in simple stochastic dynamical systems, and highlight the relation with some relevant works.
