Phases and magnetism at the microscale in compounds containing nominal Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O

Achieving superconductivity at room temperature could lead to substantial advancements in industry and technology. Recently, a compound known as Cu-doped lead-apatite, Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O (0.9 < x < 1.1), referred to as "LK-99", has been reported to exhibit unusual electrical and magnetic behaviors that appear to resemble a superconducting transition above room temperature. In this work we collected multiphase samples containing the nominal Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O phase (no superconductivity observed in our measured samples), synthesized by three independent groups, and studied their chemical, magnetic, and electrical properties at the microscale to overcome difficulties in bulk measurements. Through the utilization of optical, scanning electron, atomic force, and scanning diamond nitrogen-vacancy microscopy techniques, we are able to establish a link between local magnetic properties and specific microscale chemical phases. Our findings indicate that while the Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O phase seems to have a mixed magnetism contribution, a significant fraction of the diamagnetic response can be attributed to Cu-rich regions (e.g., Cu2S derived from a reagent used in the synthesis). Additionally, our electrical measurements reveal the phenomenon of current path switch and a change in resistance states of Cu2S. This provides a potential explanation for the electrical behavior observed in compounds related to Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O.

Co-existence of charge density wave and anti-ferromagnetic coupling in the spin-chain compound Ba$_6$Cr$_2$S$_{10}$

Here we have performed detailed first principles calculations for the electronic structure and magnetic properties of Ba$_6$Cr$_2$S$_{10}$ to study the origin of the anti-ferromagnetic exchange interaction between spins on Cr ions for the spin-chain compound Ba$_6$Cr$_2$S$_{10}$ synthesised recently. Most importantly, we have found the co-existence of a charge density wave phase along one line and an anti-ferromagnetic spin chain along another. The dimerization of sulfur atoms loosely bonded with Ba atoms drives the system into an insulating state owing to the formation of charge density wave. Meanwhile, the small size of the effective Hubbard $U$ parameter ($\sim 0.5$ eV) due to electrostatic screening mainly accounts for the anti-ferromagnetic ground state. This co-existence equips us with a platform to tune the charge and spin degrees of freedom independently. Moreover, there exists a next-nearest-neighbouring anti-ferromagnetic interaction along the chain, which could bring forward spin frustration and hence quantum spin liquid.

First order transition in Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O ($0.9<x<1.1$) containing Cu$_2$S

Lee et al. reported that the compound LK99, with a chemical formula of Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O ($0.9<x<1.1$), exhibits room-temperature superconductivity under ambient pressure. In this study, we investigated the transport and magnetic properties of pure Cu$_2$S and LK-99 containing Cu$_2$S. We observed a sharp superconducting-like transition and a thermal hysteresis behavior in the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. However, we did not observe zero-resistivity below the transition temperature. We argue that the so-called superconducting behavior in LK-99 is most likely due to a reduction in resistivity caused by the first order structural phase transition of Cu$_2$S at around 385 K, from the $β$ phase at high temperature to the $γ$ phase at low temperature.

Regularized Mask Tuning: Uncovering Hidden Knowledge in Pre-trained Vision-Language Models

Prompt tuning and adapter tuning have shown great potential in transferring pre-trained vision-language models (VLMs) to various downstream tasks. In this work, we design a new type of tuning method, termed as regularized mask tuning, which masks the network parameters through a learnable selection. Inspired by neural pathways, we argue that the knowledge required by a downstream task already exists in the pre-trained weights but just gets concealed in the upstream pre-training stage. To bring the useful knowledge back into light, we first identify a set of parameters that are important to a given downstream task, then attach a binary mask to each parameter, and finally optimize these masks on the downstream data with the parameters frozen. When updating the mask, we introduce a novel gradient dropout strategy to regularize the parameter selection, in order to prevent the model from forgetting old knowledge and overfitting the downstream data. Experimental results on 11 datasets demonstrate the consistent superiority of our method over previous alternatives. It is noteworthy that we manage to deliver 18.73% performance improvement compared to the zero-shot CLIP via masking an average of only 2.56% parameters. Furthermore, our method is synergistic with most existing parameter-efficient tuning methods and can boost the performance on top of them. Bright Second Harmonic Emission from Photonic Crystal Vertical Cavity

We present a study on photonic vertical cavities consisting of nonlinear materials embedded in photonic crystals (PhCs) for resonantly enhancing second harmonic generation (SHG). Previous attempts at SHG in such structures have been limited to efficiencies of 10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-5}$, but we demonstrate here a high SHG efficiency of 0.28% by constructing a vertical cavity with a lithium niobate membrane placed between two PhCs, which exhibits high quality resonances. Our results open up new possibilities for compact laser frequency converters that could have a revolutionary impact on the fields of nonlinear optics and photonics.

Understanding Deep Neural Networks via Linear Separability of Hidden Layers

In this paper, we measure the linear separability of hidden layer outputs to study the characteristics of deep neural networks. In particular, we first propose Minkowski difference based linear separability measures (MD-LSMs) to evaluate the linear separability degree of two points sets. Then, we demonstrate that there is a synchronicity between the linear separability degree of hidden layer outputs and the network training performance, i.e., if the updated weights can enhance the linear separability degree of hidden layer outputs, the updated network will achieve a better training performance, and vice versa. Moreover, we study the effect of activation function and network size (including width and depth) on the linear separability of hidden layers. Finally, we conduct the numerical experiments to validate our findings on some popular deep networks including multilayer perceptron (MLP), convolutional neural network (CNN), deep belief network (DBN), ResNet, VGGNet, AlexNet, vision transformer (ViT) and GoogLeNet.

Packing squares independently

Given a set of squares and a strip of bounded width and infinite height, we consider a square strip packaging problem, which we call the square independent packing problem (SIPP), to minimize the strip height so that all the squares are packed into independent cells separated by horizontal and vertical partitions. For the SIPP, we first investigate efficient solution representations and propose a compact representation that reduces the search space from $Ω(n!)$ to $O(2^n)$, with $n$ the number of given squares, while guaranteeing that there exists a solution representation that corresponds to an optimal solution. Based on the solution representation, we show that the problem is NP-hard, and then we propose a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme (FPTAS) to solve it. We also propose three mathematical programming formulations based on different solution representations and confirm the performance of these algorithms through computational experiments. Finally, we discuss several extensions that are relevant to practical applications.

Quantum speed limit from a quantum-state-diffusion method

Characterizing the most efficient evolution, the quantum speed limit (QSL) plays a significant role in quantum technology. How to generalize the well-established QSL from closed systems to open systems has attracted much attention. In contrast to the previous schemes to derive the QSL from the reduced dynamics of open system, we propose a QSL bound from the point of view of the total system consisting of the open system and its environment using a quantum-state-diffusion method. The application of our scheme to a two-level system reveals that the system possesses an infinite speedup capacity in the noiseless case, which is destroyed by the environment under the Born-Markovian approximation. It is interesting to find that the capacity in the noiseless case is recovered in the non-Markovian dynamics as long as a bound state is formed in the energy spectrum of the total system. Enriching the characterization schemes of the QSL, our result provides an efficient way to control the QSL of open systems.

Feature Adversarial Distillation for Point Cloud Classification

Due to the point cloud's irregular and unordered geometry structure, conventional knowledge distillation technology lost a lot of information when directly used on point cloud tasks. In this paper, we propose Feature Adversarial Distillation (FAD) method, a generic adversarial loss function in point cloud distillation, to reduce loss during knowledge transfer. In the feature extraction stage, the features extracted by the teacher are used as the discriminator, and the students continuously generate new features in the training stage. The feature of the student is obtained by attacking the feedback from the teacher and getting a score to judge whether the student has learned the knowledge well or not. In experiments on standard point cloud classification on ModelNet40 and ScanObjectNN datasets, our method reduced the information loss of knowledge transfer in distillation in 40x model compression while maintaining competitive performance.

Seen to Unseen: Exploring Compositional Generalization of Multi-Attribute Controllable Dialogue Generation

Existing controllable dialogue generation work focuses on the single-attribute control and lacks generalization capability to out-of-distribution multiple attribute combinations. In this paper, we explore the compositional generalization for multi-attribute controllable dialogue generation where a model can learn from seen attribute values and generalize to unseen combinations. We propose a prompt-based disentangled controllable dialogue generation model, DCG. It learns attribute concept composition by generating attribute-oriented prompt vectors and uses a disentanglement loss to disentangle different attributes for better generalization. Besides, we design a unified reference-free evaluation framework for multiple attributes with different levels of granularities. Experiment results on two benchmarks prove the effectiveness of our method and the evaluation metric.

T5-SR: A Unified Seq-to-Seq Decoding Strategy for Semantic Parsing

Translating natural language queries into SQLs in a seq2seq manner has attracted much attention recently. However, compared with abstract-syntactic-tree-based SQL generation, seq2seq semantic parsers face much more challenges, including poor quality on schematical information prediction and poor semantic coherence between natural language queries and SQLs. This paper analyses the above difficulties and proposes a seq2seq-oriented decoding strategy called SR, which includes a new intermediate representation SSQL and a reranking method with score re-estimator to solve the above obstacles respectively. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed techniques and T5-SR-3b achieves new state-of-the-art results on the Spider dataset.

HUB: Guiding Learned Optimizers with Continuous Prompt Tuning

Learned optimizers are a crucial component of meta-learning. Recent advancements in scalable learned optimizers have demonstrated their superior performance over hand-designed optimizers in various tasks. However, certain characteristics of these models, such as an unstable learning curve, limited ability to handle unseen tasks and network architectures, difficult-to-control behaviours, and poor performance in fine-tuning tasks impede their widespread adoption. To tackle the issue of generalization in scalable learned optimizers, we propose a hybrid-update-based (HUB) optimization strategy inspired by recent advancements in hard prompt tuning and result selection techniques used in large language and vision models. This approach can be easily applied to any task that involves hand-designed or learned optimizer. By incorporating hand-designed optimizers as the second component in our hybrid approach, we are able to retain the benefits of learned optimizers while stabilizing the training process and, more importantly, improving testing performance. We validate our design through a total of 17 tasks, consisting of thirteen training from scratch and four fine-tuning settings. These tasks vary in model sizes, architectures, or dataset sizes, and the competing optimizers are hyperparameter-tuned. We outperform all competitors in 94% of the tasks with better testing performance. Furthermore, we conduct a theoretical analysis to examine the potential impact of our hybrid strategy on the behaviours and inherited traits of learned optimizers.

PreQuant: A Task-agnostic Quantization Approach for Pre-trained Language Models

While transformer-based pre-trained language models (PLMs) have dominated a number of NLP applications, these models are heavy to deploy and expensive to use. Therefore, effectively compressing large-scale PLMs becomes an increasingly important problem. Quantization, which represents high-precision tensors with low-bit fix-point format, is a viable solution. However, most existing quantization methods are task-specific, requiring customized training and quantization with a large number of trainable parameters on each individual task. Inspired by the observation that the over-parameterization nature of PLMs makes it possible to freeze most of the parameters during the fine-tuning stage, in this work, we propose a novel ``quantize before fine-tuning'' framework, PreQuant, that differs from both quantization-aware training and post-training quantization. PreQuant is compatible with various quantization strategies, with outlier-aware parameter-efficient fine-tuning incorporated to correct the induced quantization error. We demonstrate the effectiveness of PreQuant on the GLUE benchmark using BERT, RoBERTa, and T5. We also provide an empirical investigation into the workflow of PreQuant, which sheds light on its efficacy.

RankCSE: Unsupervised Sentence Representations Learning via Learning to Rank

Unsupervised sentence representation learning is one of the fundamental problems in natural language processing with various downstream applications. Recently, contrastive learning has been widely adopted which derives high-quality sentence representations by pulling similar semantics closer and pushing dissimilar ones away. However, these methods fail to capture the fine-grained ranking information among the sentences, where each sentence is only treated as either positive or negative. In many real-world scenarios, one needs to distinguish and rank the sentences based on their similarities to a query sentence, e.g., very relevant, moderate relevant, less relevant, irrelevant, etc. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, RankCSE, for unsupervised sentence representation learning, which incorporates ranking consistency and ranking distillation with contrastive learning into a unified framework. In particular, we learn semantically discriminative sentence representations by simultaneously ensuring ranking consistency between two representations with different dropout masks, and distilling listwise ranking knowledge from the teacher. An extensive set of experiments are conducted on both semantic textual similarity (STS) and transfer (TR) tasks. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our approach over several state-of-the-art baselines.

MD-VQA: Multi-Dimensional Quality Assessment for UGC Live Videos

User-generated content (UGC) live videos are often bothered by various distortions during capture procedures and thus exhibit diverse visual qualities. Such source videos are further compressed and transcoded by media server providers before being distributed to end-users. Because of the flourishing of UGC live videos, effective video quality assessment (VQA) tools are needed to monitor and perceptually optimize live streaming videos in the distributing process. In this paper, we address \textbf{UGC Live VQA} problems by constructing a first-of-a-kind subjective UGC Live VQA database and developing an effective evaluation tool. Concretely, 418 source UGC videos are collected in real live streaming scenarios and 3,762 compressed ones at different bit rates are generated for the subsequent subjective VQA experiments. Based on the built database, we develop a \underline{M}ulti-\underline{D}imensional \underline{VQA} (\textbf{MD-VQA}) evaluator to measure the visual quality of UGC live videos from semantic, distortion, and motion aspects respectively. Extensive experimental results show that MD-VQA achieves state-of-the-art performance on both our UGC Live VQA database and existing compressed UGC VQA databases.

M2GNN: Metapath and Multi-interest Aggregated Graph Neural Network for Tag-based Cross-domain Recommendation

Cross-domain recommendation (CDR) is an effective way to alleviate the data sparsity problem. Content-based CDR is one of the most promising branches since most kinds of products can be described by a piece of text, especially when cold-start users or items have few interactions. However, two vital issues are still under-explored: (1) From the content modeling perspective, sufficient long-text descriptions are usually scarce in a real recommender system, more often the light-weight textual features, such as a few keywords or tags, are more accessible, which is improperly modeled by existing methods. (2) From the CDR perspective, not all inter-domain interests are helpful to infer intra-domain interests. Caused by domain-specific features, there are part of signals benefiting for recommendation in the source domain but harmful for that in the target domain. Therefore, how to distill useful interests is crucial. To tackle the above two problems, we propose a metapath and multi-interest aggregated graph neural network (M2GNN). Specifically, to model the tag-based contents, we construct a heterogeneous information network to hold the semantic relatedness between users, items, and tags in all domains. The metapath schema is predefined according to domain-specific knowledge, with one metapath for one domain. User representations are learned by GNN with a hierarchical aggregation framework, where the intra-metapath aggregation firstly filters out trivial tags and the inter-metapath aggregation further filters out useless interests. Offline experiments and online A/B tests demonstrate that M2GNN achieves significant improvements over the state-of-the-art methods and current industrial recommender system in Dianping, respectively. Further analysis shows that M2GNN offers an interpretable recommendation.

DABERT: Dual Attention Enhanced BERT for Semantic Matching

Transformer-based pre-trained language models such as BERT have achieved remarkable results in Semantic Sentence Matching. However, existing models still suffer from insufficient ability to capture subtle differences. Minor noise like word addition, deletion, and modification of sentences may cause flipped predictions. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel Dual Attention Enhanced BERT (DABERT) to enhance the ability of BERT to capture fine-grained differences in sentence pairs. DABERT comprises (1) Dual Attention module, which measures soft word matches by introducing a new dual channel alignment mechanism to model affinity and difference attention. (2) Adaptive Fusion module, this module uses attention to learn the aggregation of difference and affinity features, and generates a vector describing the matching details of sentence pairs. We conduct extensive experiments on well-studied semantic matching and robustness test datasets, and the experimental results show the effectiveness of our proposed method.
