Non-Markovian temperature sensing

We investigate the sensing performance of a single-qubit quantum thermometer within a non-Markovian dynamical framework. By employing an exactly numerical hierarchical equations of the motion method, we go beyond traditional paradigms of the Born-Markov theory, the pure dephasing mechanism, and the weak-coupling approximation, which were commonly used in many previous studies of quantum thermometry. We find (i) the non-Markovian characteristics may boost the estimation efficiency, (ii) the sensitivity of quantum thermometry can be effectively optimized by engineering the proportions of different coupling operators in the whole sensor-reservoir interaction Hamiltonian, and (iii) a threshold, above which the strong sensor-reservoir coupling can significantly enhance the sensing precision in the long-encoding-time regime. Our results may have certain applications for high-resolution quantum thermometry.

Fast Laser Cooling Using Optimal Quantum Control

Cooling down a trapped ion into its motional ground state is a central step for trapped ions based quantum information processing. State of the art cooling schemes often work under a set of optimal cooling conditions derived analytically using a perturbative approach, in which the sideband coupling is assumed to be the weakest of all the relevant transitions. As a result the cooling rate is severely limited. Here we propose to use quantum control technique powered with automatic differentiation to speed up the classical cooling schemes. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by applying it to find the optimal cooling conditions for classical sideband cooling and electromagnetically induced transparency cooling schemes, which are in general beyond the weak sideband coupling regime. Based on those numerically found optimal cooling conditions, we show that faster cooling can be achieved while at the same time a low average phonon occupation can be retained.

DisenKGAT: Knowledge Graph Embedding with Disentangled Graph Attention Network

Knowledge graph completion (KGC) has become a focus of attention across deep learning community owing to its excellent contribution to numerous downstream tasks. Although recently have witnessed a surge of work on KGC, they are still insufficient to accurately capture complex relations, since they adopt the single and static representations. In this work, we propose a novel Disentangled Knowledge Graph Attention Network (DisenKGAT) for KGC, which leverages both micro-disentanglement and macro-disentanglement to exploit representations behind Knowledge graphs (KGs). To achieve micro-disentanglement, we put forward a novel relation-aware aggregation to learn diverse component representation. For macro-disentanglement, we leverage mutual information as a regularization to enhance independence. With the assistance of disentanglement, our model is able to generate adaptive representations in terms of the given scenario. Besides, our work has strong robustness and flexibility to adapt to various score functions. Extensive experiments on public benchmark datasets have been conducted to validate the superiority of DisenKGAT over existing methods in terms of both accuracy and explainability.

Popularity Bias Is Not Always Evil: Disentangling Benign and Harmful Bias for Recommendation

Recommender system usually suffers from severe popularity bias -- the collected interaction data usually exhibits quite imbalanced or even long-tailed distribution over items. Such skewed distribution may result from the users' conformity to the group, which deviates from reflecting users' true preference. Existing efforts for tackling this issue mainly focus on completely eliminating popularity bias. However, we argue that not all popularity bias is evil. Popularity bias not only results from conformity but also item quality, which is usually ignored by existing methods. Some items exhibit higher popularity as they have intrinsic better property. Blindly removing the popularity bias would lose such important signal, and further deteriorate model performance. To sufficiently exploit such important information for recommendation, it is essential to disentangle the benign popularity bias caused by item quality from the harmful popularity bias caused by conformity. Although important, it is quite challenging as we lack an explicit signal to differentiate the two factors of popularity bias. In this paper, we propose to leverage temporal information as the two factors exhibit quite different patterns along the time: item quality revealing item inherent property is stable and static while conformity that depends on items' recent clicks is highly time-sensitive. Correspondingly, we further propose a novel Time-aware DisEntangled framework (TIDE), where a click is generated from three components namely the static item quality, the dynamic conformity effect, as well as the user-item matching score returned by any recommendation model. Lastly, we conduct interventional inference such that the recommendation can benefit from the benign popularity bias while circumvent the harmful one. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrated the effectiveness of TIDE.

Stock Price Prediction Under Anomalous Circumstances

The stock market is volatile and complicated, especially in 2020. Because of a series of global and regional "black swans," such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. stock market triggered the circuit breaker three times within one week of March 9 to 16, which is unprecedented throughout history. Affected by the whole circumstance, the stock prices of individual corporations also plummeted by rates that were never predicted by any pre-developed forecasting models. It reveals that there was a lack of satisfactory models that could predict the changes in stocks prices when catastrophic, highly unlikely events occur. To fill the void of such models and to help prevent investors from heavy losses during uncertain times, this paper aims to capture the movement pattern of stock prices under anomalous circumstances. First, we detect outliers in sequential stock prices by fitting a standard ARIMA model and identifying the points where predictions deviate significantly from actual values. With the selected data points, we train ARIMA and LSTM models at the single-stock level, industry level, and general market level, respectively. Since the public moods affect the stock market tremendously, a sentiment analysis is also incorporated into the models in the form of sentiment scores, which are converted from comments about specific stocks on Reddit. Based on 100 companies' stock prices in the period of 2016 to 2020, the models achieve an average prediction accuracy of 98% which can be used to optimize existing prediction methodologies.

Virtual Data Augmentation: A Robust and General Framework for Fine-tuning Pre-trained Models

Recent works have shown that powerful pre-trained language models (PLM) can be fooled by small perturbations or intentional attacks. To solve this issue, various data augmentation techniques are proposed to improve the robustness of PLMs. However, it is still challenging to augment semantically relevant examples with sufficient diversity. In this work, we present Virtual Data Augmentation (VDA), a general framework for robustly fine-tuning PLMs. Based on the original token embeddings, we construct a multinomial mixture for augmenting virtual data embeddings, where a masked language model guarantees the semantic relevance and the Gaussian noise provides the augmentation diversity. Furthermore, a regularized training strategy is proposed to balance the two aspects. Extensive experiments on six datasets show that our approach is able to improve the robustness of PLMs and alleviate the performance degradation under adversarial attacks. Our codes and data are publicly available at \textcolor{blue}{\url{https://github.com/RUCAIBox/VDA}}.

Non-Fermi liquid phase and linear-in-temperature scattering rate in overdoped two dimensional Hubbard model

Understanding electronic properties that violate the Landau Fermi liquid paradigm in cuprate superconductors remains a major challenge in condensed matter physics. The strange metal state in overdoped cuprates that exhibits linear-in-temperature scattering rate and dc resistivity is a particularly puzzling example. Here, we compute the electronic scattering rate in the two-dimensional Hubbard model using cluster generalization of dynamical mean-field theory. We present a global phase diagram documenting an apparent non-Fermi liquid phase, in between the pseudogap and Fermi liquid phase in the doped Mott insulator regime. We discover that in this non-Fermi liquid phase, the electronic scattering rate $γ_k(T)$ can display linear temperature dependence as temperature $T$ goes to zero. In the temperature range that we can access, the $T-$ dependent scattering rate is isotropic on the Fermi surface, in agreement with recent experiments. Using fluctuation diagnostic techniques, we identify antiferromagnetic fluctuations as the physical origin of the $T-$ linear electronic scattering rate.

Deformation of Heartbeat Pulse Waveform Caused by Sensor Binding Force

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a method of detecting variation in blood volume commonly through contact with the skin and involving the usage of one or multiple sensors. PPG is typically used in health-related fields and one of its most popular uses is heart rate monitoring. Recent developments in technology have introduced wearable smart devices that can detect PPG signals. These devices mostly rely on signals that are detected at a single location, indicating that such devices require the signal waveform to be immensely reliable. In further detail, the properties of the blood circulation system are being deducted from the heartbeat signal profile. One disadvantage is that the waveform can be affected by tissues that surround the blood vessels. This may result in the unreliability of the methods utilized by many wearable smart devices. This paper introduces an experimental study on the deformation of waveform change caused by sensor binding force. The results of the study are that an increase in sensor binding force decreases the width of the pump strength-related pulse.

Improving Document Representations by Generating Pseudo Query Embeddings for Dense Retrieval

Recently, the retrieval models based on dense representations have been gradually applied in the first stage of the document retrieval tasks, showing better performance than traditional sparse vector space models. To obtain high efficiency, the basic structure of these models is Bi-encoder in most cases. However, this simple structure may cause serious information loss during the encoding of documents since the queries are agnostic. To address this problem, we design a method to mimic the queries on each of the documents by an iterative clustering process and represent the documents by multiple pseudo queries (i.e., the cluster centroids). To boost the retrieval process using approximate nearest neighbor search library, we also optimize the matching function with a two-step score calculation procedure. Experimental results on several popular ranking and QA datasets show that our model can achieve state-of-the-art results.

Social Media Study of Public Opinions on Potential COVID-19 Vaccines: Informing Dissent, Disparities, and Dissemination

The current development of vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 is unprecedented. Little is known, however, about the nuanced public opinions on the vaccines on social media. We adopt a human-guided machine learning framework using more than six million tweets from almost two million unique Twitter users to capture public opinions on the potential vaccines for SARS-CoV-2, classifying them into three groups: pro-vaccine, vaccine-hesitant, and anti-vaccine. We aggregate opinions at the state and country levels, and find that the major changes in the percentages of different opinion groups roughly correspond to the major pandemic-related events. Interestingly, the percentage of the pro-vaccine group is lower in the Southeast part of the United States. Using multinomial logistic regression, we compare demographics, social capital, income, religious status, political affiliations, geo-locations, sentiment of personal pandemic experience and non-pandemic experience, and county-level pandemic severity perception of these three groups to investigate the scope and causes of public opinions on vaccines. We find that socioeconomically disadvantaged groups are more likely to hold polarized opinions on potential COVID-19 vaccines. People who have the worst personal pandemic experience are more likely to hold the anti-vaccine opinion. Next, by conducting counterfactual analyses, we find that the U.S. public is most concerned about the safety, effectiveness, and political issues regarding potential vaccines for COVID-19, and improving personal pandemic experience increases the vaccine acceptance level. We believe this is the first large-scale social media-based study to analyze public opinions on potential COVID-19 vaccines that can inform more effective vaccine distribution policies and strategies.

Multi-hole models for deterministically placed acceptor arrays in silicon

We compute the electronic structure of acceptor clusters in silicon by using three methods to include electron correlations: the full configuration interaction, the Heitler-London approximation, and the unrestricted Hartree-Fock method. We show both the HL approach and the UHF method are good approximations to the ground state of the full CI calculation for a pair of acceptors and for finite linear chains. The total energies for finite linear chains show the formation of a 4-fold degenerate ground state when there is a weak bond at the end of the chain, which is shown to be a manifold of topological edge states. We identify a change in the angular momentum composition of the ground state at a critical pattern of bond lengths and show it is related to a crossing in the Fock matrix eigenvalues. We also test the symmetry of the UHF solution and compare it to the full CI; the symmetry is broken under almost all the arrangements by the formation of a magnetic state in UHF, and we find further broken symmetries for some particular arrangements related to crossings or potential crossings between the Fock-matrix eigenvalues. We also compute the charge distributions across the acceptors obtained from the eigenvectors of the Fock matrix: with weak bonds at the chain ends, two holes are localized at either end of the chain while the others have a nearly uniform distribution over the middle; this implies the existence of the non-trivial edge states. We apply the UHF method to treat an infinite linear chain with periodic boundary conditions. We find the band structures in the UHF approximation and compute the Zak phases for the occupied Fock-matrix eigenvalues; we find they do not correctly predict the topological edge states in this interacting system. We find direct study of the quantum numbers characterising the edge states provides a better insight into their topological nature.

The impact of model risk on dynamic portfolio selection under multi-period mean-standard-deviation criterion

We quantify model risk of a financial portfolio whereby a multi-period mean-standard-deviation criterion is used as a selection criterion. In this work, model risk is defined as the loss due to uncertainty of the underlying distribution of the returns of the assets in the portfolio. The uncertainty is measured by the Kullback-Leibler divergence, i.e., the relative entropy. In the worst case scenario, the optimal robust strategy can be obtained in a semi-analytical form as a solution of a system of nonlinear equations. Several numerical results are presented which allow us to compare the performance of this robust strategy with the optimal non-robust strategy. For illustration, we also quantify the model risk associated with an empirical dataset.

Steady state phonon occupation of EIT cooling: higher order calculations

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) cooling has established itself as one of the most widely used cooling schemes for trapped ions during the past twenty years. Compared to its alternatives, EIT cooling possesses important advantages such as a tunable effective linewidth, a very low steady state phonon occupation, and applicability for multiple ions. However, existing analytic expression for the steady state phonon occupation of EIT cooling is limited to the zeroth order of the Lamb-Dicke parameter. Here we extend such calculations and present the explicit expression to the second order of the Lamb-Dicke parameter. We discuss several implications of our refined formula and are able to resolve certain difficulties in existing results.

Transferable Knowledge-Based Multi-Granularity Aggregation Network for Temporal Action Localization: Submission to ActivityNet Challenge 2021

This technical report presents an overview of our solution used in the submission to 2021 HACS Temporal Action Localization Challenge on both Supervised Learning Track and Weakly-Supervised Learning Track. Temporal Action Localization (TAL) requires to not only precisely locate the temporal boundaries of action instances, but also accurately classify the untrimmed videos into specific categories. However, Weakly-Supervised TAL indicates locating the action instances using only video-level class labels. In this paper, to train a supervised temporal action localizer, we adopt Temporal Context Aggregation Network (TCANet) to generate high-quality action proposals through ``local and global" temporal context aggregation and complementary as well as progressive boundary refinement. As for the WSTAL, a novel framework is proposed to handle the poor quality of CAS generated by simple classification network, which can only focus on local discriminative parts, rather than locate the entire interval of target actions. Further inspired by the transfer learning method, we also adopt an additional module to transfer the knowledge from trimmed videos (HACS Clips dataset) to untrimmed videos (HACS Segments dataset), aiming at promoting the classification performance on untrimmed videos. Finally, we employ a boundary regression module embedded with Outer-Inner-Contrastive (OIC) loss to automatically predict the boundaries based on the enhanced CAS. Our proposed scheme achieves 39.91 and 29.78 average mAP on the challenge testing set of supervised and weakly-supervised temporal action localization track respectively.

Myopic robust index tracking with Bregman divergence

Index tracking is a popular form of asset management. Typically, a quadratic function is used to define the tracking error of a portfolio and the look back approach is applied to solve the index tracking problem. We argue that a forward looking approach is more suitable, whereby the tracking error is expressed as expectation of a function of the difference between the returns of the index and of the portfolio. We also assume that there is an uncertainty in the distribution of the assets, hence a robust version of the optimization problem needs to be adopted. We use Bregman divergence in describing the deviation between the nominal and actual distribution of the components of the index. In this scenario, we derive the optimal robust index tracking strategy in a semi-analytical form as a solution of a system of nonlinear equations. Several numerical results are presented that allow us to compare the performance of this robust strategy with the optimal non-robust strategy. We show that, especially during market downturns, the robust strategy can be very advantageous.

Characterizing Discourse about COVID-19 Vaccines: A Reddit Version of the Pandemic Story

It has been one year since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The good news is that vaccines developed by several manufacturers are being actively distributed worldwide. However, as more and more vaccines become available to the public, various concerns related to vaccines become the primary barriers that may hinder the public from getting vaccinated. Considering the complexities of these concerns and their potential hazards, this study aims to offer a clear understanding about different population groups' underlying concerns when they talk about COVID-19 vaccines, particular those active on Reddit. The goal is achieved by applying LDA and LIWC to characterizing the pertaining discourse with insights generated through a combination of quantitative and qualitative comparisons. Findings include: 1) during the pandemic, the proportion of Reddit comments predominated by conspiracy theories outweighed that of any other topics; 2) each subreddit has its own user bases, so information posted in one subreddit may not reach those from other subreddits; 3) since users' concerns vary across time and subreddits, communication strategies must be adjusted according to specific needs. The results of this study manifest challenges as well as opportunities in the process of designing effective communication and immunization programs.

Capturing Event Argument Interaction via A Bi-Directional Entity-Level Recurrent Decoder

Capturing interactions among event arguments is an essential step towards robust event argument extraction (EAE). However, existing efforts in this direction suffer from two limitations: 1) The argument role type information of contextual entities is mainly utilized as training signals, ignoring the potential merits of directly adopting it as semantically rich input features; 2) The argument-level sequential semantics, which implies the overall distribution pattern of argument roles over an event mention, is not well characterized. To tackle the above two bottlenecks, we formalize EAE as a Seq2Seq-like learning problem for the first time, where a sentence with a specific event trigger is mapped to a sequence of event argument roles. A neural architecture with a novel Bi-directional Entity-level Recurrent Decoder (BERD) is proposed to generate argument roles by incorporating contextual entities' argument role predictions, like a word-by-word text generation process, thereby distinguishing implicit argument distribution patterns within an event more accurately.

Long-Time Magnetic Relaxation in Antiferromagnetic Topological Material EuCd$_2$As$_2$

Magnetic topological materials have attracted much attention due to the correlation between topology and magnetism. Recent studies suggest that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ is an antiferromagnetic topological material. Here by carrying out thorough magnetic, electrical and thermodynamic property measurements, we discover a long time relaxation of the magnetic susceptibility in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. The (001) in-plane magnetic susceptibility at 5 K is found to continuously increase up to $\sim$10% over the time of $\sim$14 hours. The magnetic relaxation is anisotropic and strongly depends on the temperature and the applied magnetic field. These results will stimulate further theoretical and experimental studies to understand the origin of the relaxation process and its effect on the electronic structure and physical properties of the magnetic topological materials.
