A Sequential Matching Framework for Multi-turn Response Selection in Retrieval-based Chatbots

We study the problem of response selection for multi-turn conversation in retrieval-based chatbots. The task requires matching a response candidate with a conversation context, whose challenges include how to recognize important parts of the context, and how to model the relationships among utterances in the context. Existing matching methods may lose important information in contexts as we can interpret them with a unified framework in which contexts are transformed to fixed-length vectors without any interaction with responses before matching. The analysis motivates us to propose a new matching framework that can sufficiently carry the important information in contexts to matching and model the relationships among utterances at the same time. The new framework, which we call a sequential matching framework (SMF), lets each utterance in a context interacts with a response candidate at the first step and transforms the pair to a matching vector. The matching vectors are then accumulated following the order of the utterances in the context with a recurrent neural network (RNN) which models the relationships among the utterances. The context-response matching is finally calculated with the hidden states of the RNN. Under SMF, we propose a sequential convolutional network and sequential attention network and conduct experiments on two public data sets to test their performance. Experimental results show that both models can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art matching methods. We also show that the models are interpretable with visualizations that provide us insights on how they capture and leverage the important information in contexts for matching.

Large-Scale 3D Shape Reconstruction and Segmentation from ShapeNet Core55

We introduce a large-scale 3D shape understanding benchmark using data and annotation from ShapeNet 3D object database. The benchmark consists of two tasks: part-level segmentation of 3D shapes and 3D reconstruction from single view images. Ten teams have participated in the challenge and the best performing teams have outperformed state-of-the-art approaches on both tasks. A few novel deep learning architectures have been proposed on various 3D representations on both tasks. We report the techniques used by each team and the corresponding performances. In addition, we summarize the major discoveries from the reported results and possible trends for the future work in the field.

Effects of counter-rotating-wave terms on the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems

We investigate the effect of counter-rotating-wave terms on the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems by employing the hierarchical equations of motion in the framework of the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion approach. As illustrative examples, the non-Markovian memory effect of a qubit embedded in a bosonic and a fermionic environment at zero temperature are analyzed. It is found that the counter-rotating-wave terms are able to enhance the observed non-Markovianity no matter the environment is composed of bosons or fermions. This result suggests that the rotating-wave approximation may inevitably reduce the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems. Moreover, we find that the modification of the non-Markovianity due to the different statistical properties of environmental modes becomes larger with the increase of the system-environment coupling strength.

Atomically-thin Femtojoule Filamentary Memristor

The morphology and dimension of the conductive filament formed in a memristive device are strongly influenced by the thickness of its switching medium layer. Aggressive scaling of this active layer thickness is critical towards reducing the operating current, voltage and energy consumption in filamentary type memristors. Previously, the thickness of this filament layer has been limited to above a few nanometers due to processing constraints, making it challenging to further suppress the on-state current and the switching voltage. Here, we study the formation of conductive filaments in a material medium with sub-nanometer thickness, formed through the oxidation of atomically-thin two-dimensional boron nitride. The resulting memristive device exhibits sub-nanometer filamentary switching with sub-pA operation current and femtojoule per bit energy consumption. Furthermore, by confining the filament to the atomic scale, we observe current switching characteristics that are distinct from that in thicker medium due to the profoundly different atomic kinetics. The filament morphology in such an aggressively scaled memristive device is also theoretically explored. These ultra-low energy devices are promising for realizing femtojoule and sub-femtojoule electronic computation, which can be attractive for applications in a wide range of electronics systems that desire ultra-low power operation.

A Central Limit Theorem for First Passage Percolation in the Slab

We consider first-passage percolation on the edges of $\mathbb{Z}^2 \times k,$ namely the slab of width $k$. Each edge is assigned independently a passage time of either 0 (with probability $1-p_c(\mathbb{S}_k)$) or 1 ((with probability $p_c(\mathbb{S}_k)$) where $p_c$ is the critical probability. We prove central limit theorems for point-to-point and point-to-line passage times. These generalize the results of [Kesten and Zhang] to non-planar graphs.

Improved Consistent Weighted Sampling Revisited

Min-Hash is a popular technique for efficiently estimating the Jaccard similarity of binary sets. Consistent Weighted Sampling (CWS) generalizes the Min-Hash scheme to sketch weighted sets and has drawn increasing interest from the community. Due to its constant-time complexity independent of the values of the weights, Improved CWS (ICWS) is considered as the state-of-the-art CWS algorithm. In this paper, we revisit ICWS and analyze its underlying mechanism to show that there actually exists dependence between the two components of the hash-code produced by ICWS, which violates the condition of independence. To remedy the problem, we propose an Improved ICWS (I$^2$CWS) algorithm which not only shares the same theoretical computational complexity as ICWS but also abides by the required conditions of the CWS scheme. The experimental results on a number of synthetic data sets and real-world text data sets demonstrate that our I$^2$CWS algorithm can estimate the Jaccard similarity more accurately, and also compete with or outperform the compared methods, including ICWS, in classification and top-$K$ retrieval, after relieving the underlying dependence.

Sequential Matching Network: A New Architecture for Multi-turn Response Selection in Retrieval-based Chatbots

We study response selection for multi-turn conversation in retrieval-based chatbots. Existing work either concatenates utterances in context or matches a response with a highly abstract context vector finally, which may lose relationships among utterances or important contextual information. We propose a sequential matching network (SMN) to address both problems. SMN first matches a response with each utterance in the context on multiple levels of granularity, and distills important matching information from each pair as a vector with convolution and pooling operations. The vectors are then accumulated in a chronological order through a recurrent neural network (RNN) which models relationships among utterances. The final matching score is calculated with the hidden states of the RNN. An empirical study on two public data sets shows that SMN can significantly outperform state-of-the-art methods for response selection in multi-turn conversation.

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in quantum dissipative systems

We investigate the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in quantum dissipative systems by employing a hierarchical equations of motion approach which is beyond the usual Markovian approximation, the rotating wave approximation, and the perturbative approximation. The quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno dynamics of a biased qubit-boson model and a biased qutrit-boson model are provided as illustrative examples. It is found that (i) there exists multiple Zeno-anti-Zeno crossover phenomena, (ii) the non-Markovian characteristic of the bath may be favorable for the accessibility of the Zeno dynamics, and (iii) high bath temperature may add the difficulty in observing the quantum Zeno effect in quantum dissipative systems.

Efficient Communications in Training Large Scale Neural Networks

We consider the problem of how to reduce the cost of communication that is required for the parallel training of a neural network. The state-of-the-art method, Bulk Synchronous Parallel Stochastic Gradient Descent (BSP-SGD), requires many collective communication operations, like broadcasts of parameters or reductions for sub-gradient aggregations, which for large messages quickly dominates overall execution time and limits parallel scalability. To address this problem, we develop a new technique for collective operations, referred to as Linear Pipelining (LP). It is tuned to the message sizes that arise in BSP-SGD, and works effectively on multi-GPU systems. Theoretically, the cost of LP is invariant to $P$, where $P$ is the number of GPUs, while the cost of more conventional Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) scales like $O(\log P)$. LP also demonstrate up to 2x faster bandwidth than Bidirectional Exchange (BE) techniques that are widely adopted by current MPI implementations. We apply these collectives to BSP-SGD, showing that the proposed implementations reduce communication bottlenecks in practice while preserving the attractive convergence properties of BSP-SGD.

A class of generalized positive linear maps on matrix algebras

We construct a class of positive linear maps on matrix algebras. We find conditions when these maps are atomic, decomposable and completely positive. We obtain a large class of atomic positive linear maps. As applications in quantum information theory, we discuss the structural physical approximation and optimality of entanglement witness associated with these maps.

The first result on 76Ge neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment

We report the first result on Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. A mass of 994 g p-type point-contact high purity germanium detector has been installed to search the neutrinoless double beta decay events, as well as to directly detect dark matter particles. An exposure of 304 kg*day has been analyzed. The wideband spectrum from 500 keV to 3 MeV was obtained and the average event rate at the 2.039 MeV energy range is about 0.012 count per keV per kg per day. The half-life of Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay has been derived based on this result as: T 1/2 > 6.4*10^22 yr (90% C.L.). An upper limit on the effective Majorana-neutrino mass of 5.0 eV has been achieved. The possible methods to further decrease the background level have been discussed and will be pursued in the next stage of CDEX experiment.

Modified quantum-speed-limit bounds for open quantum dynamics in quantum channels

The minimal evolution time between two distinguishable states is of fundamental interest in quantum physics. Very recently Mirkin et al. argue that some most common quantum-speed-limit (QSL) bounds which depend on the actual evolution time do not cleave to the essence of the QSL theory as they grow indefinitely but the final state is reached at a finite time in a damped Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model. In this paper, we thoroughly study this puzzling phenomenon. We find the inconsistent estimates will happen if and only if the limit of resolution of a calculation program is achieved, through which we propose that the nature of the inconsistency is not a violation to the essence of the QSL theory but an illusion caused by the finite precision in numerical simulations. We also present a generic method to overcome the inconsistent estimates and confirm its effectiveness in both amplitude-damping and phase-damping channels. Additionally, we show special cases which may restrict the QSL bound defined by "quantumness".

Nonparametric Spherical Regression Using Diffeomorphic Mappings

Spherical regression explores relationships between variables on spherical domains. We develop a nonparametric model that uses a diffeomorphic map from a sphere to itself. The restriction of this mapping to diffeomorphisms is natural in several settings. The model is estimated in a penalized maximum-likelihood framework using gradient-based optimization. Towards that goal, we specify a first-order roughness penalty using the Jacobian of diffeomorphisms. We compare the prediction performance of the proposed model with state-of-the-art methods using simulated and real data involving cloud deformations, wind directions, and vector-cardiograms. This model is found to outperform others in capturing relationships between spherical variables.

Hierarchical Recurrent Attention Network for Response Generation

We study multi-turn response generation in chatbots where a response is generated according to a conversation context. Existing work has modeled the hierarchy of the context, but does not pay enough attention to the fact that words and utterances in the context are differentially important. As a result, they may lose important information in context and generate irrelevant responses. We propose a hierarchical recurrent attention network (HRAN) to model both aspects in a unified framework. In HRAN, a hierarchical attention mechanism attends to important parts within and among utterances with word level attention and utterance level attention respectively. With the word level attention, hidden vectors of a word level encoder are synthesized as utterance vectors and fed to an utterance level encoder to construct hidden representations of the context. The hidden vectors of the context are then processed by the utterance level attention and formed as context vectors for decoding the response. Empirical studies on both automatic evaluation and human judgment show that HRAN can significantly outperform state-of-the-art models for multi-turn response generation.

Effect of bath temperature on the decoherence of quantum dissipative systems

We report an anomalous decoherence phenomenon of a quantum dissipative system in the framework of a stochastic decoupling scheme along with a hierarchical equations-of-motion formalism without the usual Born-Markov or weak coupling approximations. It is found that the decoherence of a two-qubit spin-boson model can be reduced by increasing the bath temperature in strong-coupling regimes. For the weak-coupling situation, we find that the bath temperature may enhance the decoherence. This result is contrary to the common recognition that a higher bath temperature always induces a more severe decoherence and suggests that a decoherence dynamical transition occurs in this two-qubit spin-boson model. We also demonstrate that the critical transition point can be characterized by the behavior of the frequency spectrum of the quantum coherence indicator.

Virtual Breakdown Mechanism: Field-Driven Splitting of Pure Water for Hydrogen Production

Due to the low conductivity of pure water, using an electrolyte is common for achieving efficient water electrolysis. In this paper, we have broken through this common sense by using deep-sub-Debye-length nanogap electrochemical cells for the electrolysis of pure water. At such nanometer scale, the field-driven pure water splitting exhibits a completely different mechanism from the macrosystem. We have named this process 'virtual breakdown mechanism' that results in a series of fundamental changes and more than 10^5-fold enhancement of the equivalent conductivity of pure water. This fundamental discovery has been theoretically discussed in this paper and experimentally demonstrated in a group of electrochemical cells with nanogaps between two electrodes down to 37 nm. Based on our nanogap electrochemical cells, the electrolysis current from pure water is comparable to or even larger than the current from 1 mol/L sodium hydroxide solution, indicating the high-efficiency of pure water splitting as a potential for on-demand hydrogen production.

Knowledge Enhanced Hybrid Neural Network for Text Matching

Long text brings a big challenge to semantic matching due to their complicated semantic and syntactic structures. To tackle the challenge, we consider using prior knowledge to help identify useful information and filter out noise to matching in long text. To this end, we propose a knowledge enhanced hybrid neural network (KEHNN). The model fuses prior knowledge into word representations by knowledge gates and establishes three matching channels with words, sequential structures of sentences given by Gated Recurrent Units (GRU), and knowledge enhanced representations. The three channels are processed by a convolutional neural network to generate high level features for matching, and the features are synthesized as a matching score by a multilayer perceptron. The model extends the existing methods by conducting matching on words, local structures of sentences, and global context of sentences. Evaluation results from extensive experiments on public data sets for question answering and conversation show that KEHNN can significantly outperform the-state-of-the-art matching models and particularly improve the performance on pairs with long text.

Detecting Context Dependent Messages in a Conversational Environment

While automatic response generation for building chatbot systems has drawn a lot of attention recently, there is limited understanding on when we need to consider the linguistic context of an input text in the generation process. The task is challenging, as messages in a conversational environment are short and informal, and evidence that can indicate a message is context dependent is scarce. After a study of social conversation data crawled from the web, we observed that some characteristics estimated from the responses of messages are discriminative for identifying context dependent messages. With the characteristics as weak supervision, we propose using a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) network to learn a classifier. Our method carries out text representation and classifier learning in a unified framework. Experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly outperform baseline methods on accuracy of classification.
