Extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in topological materials under a magnetic field

Topological properties in quantum materials are often governed by symmetry and tuned by crystal structure and external fields, and hence symmetry-sensitive nonlinear optical measurements in a magnetic field are a valuable probe. Here we report nonlinear magneto-optical second harmonic generation (SHG) studies of non-magnetic topological materials including bilayer WTe2, monolayer WSe2 and bulk TaAs. The polarization-resolved patterns of optical SHG under magnetic field show nonlinear Kerr rotation in these time-reversal symmetric materials. For materials with three-fold rotational symmetric lattice structure, the SHG polarization pattern rotates just slightly in a magnetic field, whereas in those with mirror or two-fold rotational symmetry the SHG polarization pattern rotates greatly and distorts. These different magneto-SHG characters can be understood by considering the superposition of the magnetic field-induced time-noninvariant nonlinear optical tensor and the crystal-structure-based time-invariant counterpart. The situation is further clarified by scrutinizing the Faraday rotation, whose subtle interplay with crystal symmetry accounts for the diverse behavior of the extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in different materials. Our work illustrates the application of magneto-SHG techniques to directly probe nontrivial topological properties, and underlines the importance of minimizing extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in polarization-resolved magneto-optical studies.

Towards Word-Level End-to-End Neural Speaker Diarization with Auxiliary Network

While standard speaker diarization attempts to answer the question "who spoken when", most of relevant applications in reality are more interested in determining "who spoken what". Whether it is the conventional modularized approach or the more recent end-to-end neural diarization (EEND), an additional automatic speech recognition (ASR) model and an orchestration algorithm are required to associate the speaker labels with recognized words. In this paper, we propose Word-level End-to-End Neural Diarization (WEEND) with auxiliary network, a multi-task learning algorithm that performs end-to-end ASR and speaker diarization in the same neural architecture. That is, while speech is being recognized, speaker labels are predicted simultaneously for each recognized word. Experimental results demonstrate that WEEND outperforms the turn-based diarization baseline system on all 2-speaker short-form scenarios and has the capability to generalize to audio lengths of 5 minutes. Although 3+speaker conversations are harder, we find that with enough in-domain training data, WEEND has the potential to deliver high quality diarized text.

Attention and DCT based Global Context Modeling for Text-independent Speaker Recognition

Learning an effective speaker representation is crucial for achieving reliable performance in speaker verification tasks. Speech signals are high-dimensional, long, and variable-length sequences containing diverse information at each time-frequency (TF) location. The standard convolutional layer that operates on neighboring local regions often fails to capture the complex TF global information. Our motivation is to alleviate these challenges by increasing the modeling capacity, emphasizing significant information, and suppressing possible redundancies. We aim to design a more robust and efficient speaker recognition system by incorporating the benefits of attention mechanisms and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) based signal processing techniques, to effectively represent the global information in speech signals. To achieve this, we propose a general global time-frequency context modeling block for speaker modeling. First, an attention-based context model is introduced to capture the long-range and non-local relationship across different time-frequency locations. Second, a 2D-DCT based context model is proposed to improve model efficiency and examine the benefits of signal modeling. A multi-DCT attention mechanism is presented to improve modeling power with alternate DCT base forms. Finally, the global context information is used to recalibrate salient time-frequency locations by computing the similarity between the global context and local features. This effectively improves the speaker verification performance compared to the standard ResNet model and Squeeze & Excitation block by a large margin. Our experimental results show that the proposed global context modeling method can efficiently improve the learned speaker representations by achieving channel-wise and time-frequency feature recalibration.

Chirality manipulation of ultrafast phase switchings in a correlated CDW-Weyl semimetal

A recently emerging concept for quantum phase discovery is the controlled gapping of linear band crossings in topological semimetals. For example, achieving topological superconducting and charge-density-wave (CDW) gapping could introduce Majorana zero modes and axion electrodynamics, respectively. Light engineering of correlation gaps in topological materials provides a new avenue of achieving exotic topological phases inaccessible by conventional tuning methods such as doping and straining. Here we demonstrate a light control of correlation gaps and ultrafast phase switchings in a model CDW and polaron insulator (TaSe$_4$)$_2$I recently predicted to be an axion insulator. Our ultrafast terahertz photocurrent spectroscopy reveals a two-step, non-thermal melting of polarons and electronic CDW gap via studying the fluence dependence of a {\em longitudinal} circular photogalvanic current. The helicity-dependent photocurrent observed along the propagation of light reveals continuous ultrafast switchings from the polaronic state, to the CDW (axion) phase, and finally to a hidden Weyl phase as the pump fluence increases. Other distinguishing features corroborating with the light-induced switchings include: mode-selective coupling of coherent phonons to polaron and CDW modulation, and the emergence of a {\em non-thermal} chiral photocurrent above pump threshold of CDW-related phonons. The ultrafast chirality control of correlated topological states revealed here is important to realize axion electrodynamics and quantum computing.

Coupling of optical phonons with Kondo effect and magnetic orders in antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeAuSb$_2$

Ultrafast optical spectroscopy was used to investigate the ultrafast quasiparticle dynamics of antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeAuSb$_2$ as a function of temperature and fluence. Our results reveal (i) the opening of a narrow hybridization gap ($Δ$ $\sim$ 4.5 meV) near the Fermi level below the coherence temperature $T^*$ $\approx$ 100 K, (ii) the coupling of coherent phonon modes with Kondo effect and magnetic orders, leading to the frequencies anomaly at the characteristic temperatures, and (iii) a possible photoinduced nonthermal phase transition. Our observations thus shed light on the hybridization dynamics and magnetic orders in heavy fermion systems.

Two supercongruences involving truncated hypergeometric series

In this paper, we mainly establish two supercongruences involving truncated hypergeometric series by using some hypergeometric transformation formulas. The first supercongruence confirms a recent conjecture of the second author. The second supercongruence confirms a conjecture of Guo, Liu and Schlosser partially, and gives a parametric extension of a supercongruence of Long and Ramakrishna.

Observation of electronic nematicity driven by three-dimensional charge density wave in kagome lattice KV$_3$Sb$_5$

Kagome superconductors AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) provide a fertile playground for studying intriguing phenomena, including non-trivial band topology, superconductivity, giant anomalous Hall effect and charge density wave (CDW). Recently, a $C_2$ symmetric nematic phase prior to the superconducting state in AV$_3$Sb$_5$ drew enormous attention due to its potential inheritance of the symmetry of the unusual superconductivity. However, direct evidence on the rotation symmetry breaking of the electronic structure in the CDW state from the reciprocal space is still rare, and the underlying mechanism remains ambiguous. The observation shows unconventional unidirectionality, indicative of rotation symmetry breaking from six-fold to two-fold. The interlayer coupling between adjacent planes with $π$-phase offset in the 2$\times$2$\times$2 CDW phase leads to the preferred two-fold symmetric electronic structure. These rarely observed unidirectional back-folded bands in KV$_3$Sb$_5$ may provide important insights into its peculiar charge order and superconductivity.

Set-to-Sequence Ranking-based Concept-aware Learning Path Recommendation

With the development of the online education system, personalized education recommendation has played an essential role. In this paper, we focus on developing path recommendation systems that aim to generating and recommending an entire learning path to the given user in each session. Noticing that existing approaches fail to consider the correlations of concepts in the path, we propose a novel framework named Set-to-Sequence Ranking-based Concept-aware Learning Path Recommendation (SRC), which formulates the recommendation task under a set-to-sequence paradigm. Specifically, we first design a concept-aware encoder module which can capture the correlations among the input learning concepts. The outputs are then fed into a decoder module that sequentially generates a path through an attention mechanism that handles correlations between the learning and target concepts. Our recommendation policy is optimized by policy gradient. In addition, we also introduce an auxiliary module based on knowledge tracing to enhance the model's stability by evaluating students' learning effects on learning concepts. We conduct extensive experiments on two real-world public datasets and one industrial dataset, and the experimental results demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of SRC. Code will be available at https://gitee.com/mindspore/models/tree/master/research/recommend/SRC.

Ultrafast Switching from the Charge Density Wave Phase to a Metastable Metallic State in 1T-TiSe$_2$

The ultrafast electronic structures of the charge density wave material 1T-TiSe$_2$ were investigated by high-resolution time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We found that the quasiparticle populations drove ultrafast electronic phase transitions in 1T-TiSe$_2$ within 100 fs after photoexcitation, and a metastable metallic state, which was significantly different from the equilibrium normal phase, was evidenced far below the charge density wave transition temperature. Detailed time- and pump-fluence-dependent experiments revealed that the photoinduced metastable metallic state was a result of the halted motion of the atoms through the coherent electron-phonon coupling process, and the lifetime of this state was prolonged to picoseconds with the highest pump fluence used in this study. Ultrafast electronic dynamics were well captured by the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model. Our work demonstrates a mechanism for realizing novel electronic states by photoinducing coherent motion of atoms in the lattice.

On congruences involving Apéry numbers

In this paper, we mainly establish a congruence for a sum involving Apéry numbers, which was conjectured by Z.-W. Sun. Namely, for any prime $p>3$ and positive odd integer $m$, we prove that there is a $p$-adic integer $c_m$ only depending on $m$ such that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)^{m}(-1)^kA_k\equiv c_mp\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\pmod{p^3},$$ where $A_k=\sum_{j=0}^{k}\binom{k}{j}^2\binom{k+j}{j}^2$ is the Apéry number and $(\frac{\cdot}{p})$ is the Legendre symbol.

Rethinking k-means from manifold learning perspective

Although numerous clustering algorithms have been developed, many existing methods still leverage k-means technique to detect clusters of data points. However, the performance of k-means heavily depends on the estimation of centers of clusters, which is very difficult to achieve an optimal solution. Another major drawback is that it is sensitive to noise and outlier data. In this paper, from manifold learning perspective, we rethink k-means and present a new clustering algorithm which directly detects clusters of data without mean estimation. Specifically, we construct distance matrix between data points by Butterworth filter such that distance between any two data points in the same clusters equals to a small constant, while increasing the distance between other data pairs from different clusters. To well exploit the complementary information embedded in different views, we leverage the tensor Schatten p-norm regularization on the 3rd-order tensor which consists of indicator matrices of different views. Finally, an efficient alternating algorithm is derived to optimize our model. The constructed sequence was proved to converge to the stationary KKT point. Extensive experimental results indicate the superiority of our proposed method.

Charge fluctuations above $T_\mathrm{CDW}$ revealed by glasslike thermal transport in kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs)

We present heat capacity, electrical and thermal transport measurements of kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs). In all three compounds, development of short-range charge fluctuations above the charge density wave (CDW) transition temperature $T_\mathrm{CDW}$ strongly scatters phonons via electron-phonon coupling, leading to glasslike phonon heat transport, i.e., phonon thermal conductivity decreases weakly upon cooling. Once the long-range charge order sets in below $T_\mathrm{CDW}$, short-range charge fluctuations are quenched, and the typical Umklapp scattering dominated phonon heat transport is recovered. The charge-fluctuations-induced glasslike phonon thermal conductivity implies sizable electron-phonon coupling in $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$.

Electrical and thermal transport properties of kagome metals $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ ($A$ = Rb, Cs)

We report electrical and thermal transport properties of single crystalline kagome metals $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ ($A$ = Rb, Cs). Different from the structural similar kagome superconductors $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$, no charge density wave instabilities are found in $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$. At low temperatures below 5 K, signatures of superconductivity appear in $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ as seen in magnetization measurements. However, bulk superconductivity is not evidenced by specific heat results. Similar to $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$, $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ show nonlinear magnetic field dependence of the Hall effect below about 70 K, pointing to a multiband nature. Unlike $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ in which phonons and electron-phonon coupling play important roles in thermal transport, the thermal conductivity in $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ is dominated by electronic contributions. Moreover, our calculated electronic structure suggests that van Hove singularities are sitting well above the Fermi energy. Compared with $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$, the absence of charge orders in $A$Ti$_3$Bi$_5$ is closely associated with minor contributions from electron-phonon coupling and/or van Hove singularities.

Evolution of charge density waves from three-dimensional to quasi-two-dimensional in Kagome superconductors Cs(V$_{1-x}M_{x}$)$_3$Sb$_5$ ($M$ = Nb, Ta)

The Kagome material $A{\mathrm{V}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$ ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) with geometry frustration hosts non-trivial topological electronic structures, electronic nematicity, charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity, providing an ideal platform to study the interplay between these phases. Specifically, in pressurized- or substituted-${\mathrm{CsV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$, the relationship between CDW and superconductivity is unusual and remains to be fully understood. Recently, coexisting and competing 2 $\times$ 2 $\times$ 4 and 2 $\times$ 2 $\times$ 2 CDW phases were discovered in ${\mathrm{CsV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$. To investigate the evolution of the CDW phases with the substitution of V atoms, we performed x-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments on ${\mathrm{Cs(V}}_{1-x}{\mathrm{Ta}}_{x}{\mathrm{)}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$ and ${\mathrm{Cs(V}}_{1-x}{\mathrm{Nb}}_{x}{\mathrm{)}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$. Our results indicate that in all substituted samples, the discrete CDW reflection points in pristine ${\mathrm{CsV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$ change to rod-like structures along the $c^\star$ direction. This suggests that the long-ranged three-dimensional CDW becomes quasi-two-dimensional by the substitution of V by Ta/Nb. Moreover, our temperature-dependent measurements show that there is no hysteresis behavior of CDW signals, indicating that the 2 $\times$ 2 $\times$ 4 CDW phase is easily suppressed by even a slight substitution of V with Nb/Ta. These findings uncover the CDW evolution upon substitution of V atoms in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, providing insights into the microscopic mechanism of CDW and helping to understand the interplay between intertwined phases and superconductivity.

Configured Quantum Reservoir Computing for Multi-Task Machine Learning

Amidst the rapid advancements in experimental technology, noise-intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices have become increasingly programmable, offering versatile opportunities to leverage quantum computational advantage. Here we explore the intricate dynamics of programmable NISQ devices for quantum reservoir computing. Using a genetic algorithm to configure the quantum reservoir dynamics, we systematically enhance the learning performance. Remarkably, a single configured quantum reservoir can simultaneously learn multiple tasks, including a synthetic oscillatory network of transcriptional regulators, chaotic motifs in gene regulatory networks, and the fractional-order Chua's circuit. Our configured quantum reservoir computing yields highly precise predictions for these learning tasks, outperforming classical reservoir computing. We also test the configured quantum reservoir computing in foreign exchange (FX) market applications and demonstrate its capability to capture the stochastic evolution of the exchange rates with significantly greater accuracy than classical reservoir computing approaches. Through comparison with classical reservoir computing, we highlight the unique role of quantum coherence in the quantum reservoir, which underpins its exceptional learning performance. Our findings suggest the exciting potential of configured quantum reservoir computing for exploiting the quantum computation power of NISQ devices in developing artificial general intelligence.

Multi-View Clustering via Semi-non-negative Tensor Factorization

Multi-view clustering (MVC) based on non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and its variants have received a huge amount of attention in recent years due to their advantages in clustering interpretability. However, existing NMF-based multi-view clustering methods perform NMF on each view data respectively and ignore the impact of between-view. Thus, they can't well exploit the within-view spatial structure and between-view complementary information. To resolve this issue, we present semi-non-negative tensor factorization (Semi-NTF) and develop a novel multi-view clustering based on Semi-NTF with one-side orthogonal constraint. Our model directly performs Semi-NTF on the 3rd-order tensor which is composed of anchor graphs of views. Thus, our model directly considers the between-view relationship. Moreover, we use the tensor Schatten p-norm regularization as a rank approximation of the 3rd-order tensor which characterizes the cluster structure of multi-view data and exploits the between-view complementary information. In addition, we provide an optimization algorithm for the proposed method and prove mathematically that the algorithm always converges to the stationary KKT point. Extensive experiments on various benchmark datasets indicate that our proposed method is able to achieve satisfactory clustering performance.

Tunable positions of Weyl nodes via magnetism and pressure in the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi

The noncentrosymmetric ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlSi with simultaneous space-inversion (SI) and time-reversal (TR) symmetry breaking provides a unique platform for the exploration of novel topological states. Here, by employing electrical and thermoelectrical transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), high-pressure techniques, and band calculations, we demonstrate that magnetism and pressure can serve as efficient parameters to tune the positions of Weyl nodes in CeAlSi. At ambient pressure, an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and an anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) arise in the paramagnetic state, and then are enhanced when temperature approaches the ferromagnetic ordering temperature, evidencing magnetism facilitates the AHE/ANE. Such an enhancement of AHE/ANE can be ascribed to the tuning of the positions of Weyl nodes via magnetism. The ARPES measurements reveal that the ferromagnetism serves as a pivotal knob to tune the band structure of CeAlSi both in the bulk and on the surface. Such magnetism-tunable electronic structure has hitherto not been reported in other magnetic $R$Al$Pn$ ($R$ = rare earth elements, $Pn$ = Si, Ge) siblings, suggesting the great potential of controlling Weyl node positions in CeAlSi. Under pressure, an enhancement and a sign change of AHE are discovered. Based on band calculations, the evolution of AHE may root in the tuning of Weyl nodes via pressure. Moreover, multiple pressure-induced phase transitions are uncovered. These findings indicate that CeAlSi provides a unique and tunable platform for exploring exotic topological physics and electron correlations, as well as catering to an array of potential applications, such as spintronics and thermoelectrics.

Coexistence of Multiple Stacking Charge Density Waves in Kagome Superconductor ${\mathrm{CsV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$

The recently discovered Kagome family ${\mathrm{AV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibits rich physical phenomena, including non-trivial topological electronic structure, giant anomalous Hall effect, charge density waves (CDW) and superconductivity. Notably, CDW in ${\mathrm{AV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$ is evidenced to intertwine with its superconductivity and topology, but its nature remains elusive. Here, we combine x-ray scattering experiments and density-functional theory calculations to investigate the CDWs in ${\mathrm{CsV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$ and demonstrate the coexistence of 2 $\times$ 2 $\times$ 2 and 2 $\times$ 2 $\times$ 4 CDW stacking phases. Competition between these CDW phases is revealed by tracking the temperature evolution of CDW intensities, which also manifests in different transition temperatures during warming- and cooling measurements. We also identify a meta-stable quenched state of ${\mathrm{CsV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$ after fast-cooling process. Our study demonstrates the coexistence of competing CDW stacking in ${\mathrm{CsV}}_3{\mathrm{Sb}}_5$, offering new insights in understanding the novel properties of this system.
