Driver Assistant: Persuading Drivers to Adjust Secondary Tasks Using Large Language Models

Level 3 automated driving systems allows drivers to engage in secondary tasks while diminishing their perception of risk. In the event of an emergency necessitating driver intervention, the system will alert the driver with a limited window for reaction and imposing a substantial cognitive burden. To address this challenge, this study employs a Large Language Model (LLM) to assist drivers in maintaining an appropriate attention on road conditions through a "humanized" persuasive advice. Our tool leverages the road conditions encountered by Level 3 systems as triggers, proactively steering driver behavior via both visual and auditory routes. Empirical study indicates that our tool is effective in sustaining driver attention with reduced cognitive load and coordinating secondary tasks with takeover behavior. Our work provides insights into the potential of using LLMs to support drivers during multi-task automated driving.

Plasmonic Color Filters Enable Label-Free Plasmon-Enhanced Array Tomography with sub-diffraction limited resolution

Three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the subcellular organisation and morphology of cells and tissues is essential for understanding biological function. Although staining is the most widely used approach for visualising biological samples under a microscope, the intracellular refractive index (RI) has been proposed as a potential biophysical marker that could supplement or even surpass the sensitivity of current histological methods. Hence, the development of new, highly sensitive, label-free techniques that can detect changes in the intracellular RI is extremely desirable for biomedical imaging. The recent development of plasmonic metamaterials, designed to mimic a traditional microscope slide, have made it possible to translate subtle changes in refractive index directly into color. This approach enables label-free visualization of tissue microstructure using standard histological slide preparation methods. Here we demonstrate ultramicrotome-assisted optical plasmon-enhanced (PE) array tomography and correlate this with electron array tomography of the same sample embedded in resin. The approach enables axially super-resolved label-free imaging of whole cells in the range of 30-200 nm and shows great potential for multimodal three-dimensional colorimetric histology at the (sub-) organelle level.

Semi-Supervised Federated Learning via Dual Contrastive Learning and Soft Labeling for Intelligent Fault Diagnosis

Intelligent fault diagnosis (IFD) plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe operation of industrial machinery and improving production efficiency. However, traditional supervised deep learning methods require a large amount of training data and labels, which are often located in different clients. Additionally, the cost of data labeling is high, making labels difficult to acquire. Meanwhile, differences in data distribution among clients may also hinder the model's performance. To tackle these challenges, this paper proposes a semi-supervised federated learning framework, SSFL-DCSL, which integrates dual contrastive loss and soft labeling to address data and label scarcity for distributed clients with few labeled samples while safeguarding user privacy. It enables representation learning using unlabeled data on the client side and facilitates joint learning among clients through prototypes, thereby achieving mutual knowledge sharing and preventing local model divergence. Specifically, first, a sample weighting function based on the Laplace distribution is designed to alleviate bias caused by low confidence in pseudo labels during the semi-supervised training process. Second, a dual contrastive loss is introduced to mitigate model divergence caused by different data distributions, comprising local contrastive loss and global contrastive loss. Third, local prototypes are aggregated on the server with weighted averaging and updated with momentum to share knowledge among clients. To evaluate the proposed SSFL-DCSL framework, experiments are conducted on two publicly available datasets and a dataset collected on motors from the factory. In the most challenging task, where only 10\% of the data are labeled, the proposed SSFL-DCSL can improve accuracy by 1.15% to 7.85% over state-of-the-art methods.

AFDM-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication: Theoretical Framework and Pilot Design

The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as one representative usage scenario of sixth-generation (6G) network. However, the unprecedented characteristics of 6G, especially the doubly dispersive channel, make classical ISAC waveforms rather challenging to guarantee a desirable performance level. The recently proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) can attain full diversity even under doubly dispersive effects, thus becoming a competitive candidate for next-generation ISAC waveforms. Relevant investigations are still at an early stage, which involve only straightforward design lacking explicit theoretical analysis. This paper provides an in-depth investigation on AFDM waveform design for ISAC applications. Specifically, the closed-form Crámer-Rao bounds of target detection for AFDM are derived, followed by a demonstration on its merits over existing counterparts. Furthermore, we formulate the ambiguity function of the pilot-assisted AFDM waveform for the first time, revealing conditions for stable sensing performance. To further enhance both the communication and sensing performance of the AFDM waveform, we propose a novel pilot design by exploiting the characteristics of AFDM signals. The proposed design is analytically validated to be capable of optimizing the ambiguity function property and channel estimation accuracy simultaneously as well as overcoming the sensing and channel estimation range limitation originated from the pilot spacing. Numerical results have verified the superiority of the proposed pilot design in terms of dual-functional performance.

A Multi-Source Data Fusion-based Semantic Segmentation Model for Relic Landslide Detection

As a natural disaster, landslide often brings tremendous losses to human lives, so it urgently demands reliable detection of landslide risks. When detecting relic landslides that present important information for landslide risk warning, problems such as visual blur and small-sized dataset cause great challenges when using remote sensing images. To extract accurate semantic features, a hyper-pixel-wise contrastive learning augmented segmentation network (HPCL-Net) is proposed, which augments the local salient feature extraction from boundaries of landslides through HPCL and fuses heterogeneous information in the semantic space from high-resolution remote sensing images and digital elevation model data. For full utilization of precious samples, a global hyper-pixel-wise sample pair queues-based contrastive learning method is developed, which includes the construction of global queues that store hyper-pixel-wise samples and the updating scheme of a momentum encoder, reliably enhancing the extraction ability of semantic features. The proposed HPCL-Net is evaluated on the Loess Plateau relic landslide dataset and experimental results verify that the proposed HPCL-Net greatly outperforms existing models, where the mIoU is increased from 0.620 to 0.651, the Landslide IoU is improved from 0.334 to 0.394 and the F1score is enhanced from 0.501 to 0.565.

Conceal Truth while Show Fake: T/F Frequency Multiplexing based Anti-Intercepting Transmission

In wireless communication adversarial scenarios, signals are easily intercepted by non-cooperative parties, exposing the transmission of confidential information. This paper proposes a true-and-false (T/F) frequency multiplexing based anti-intercepting transmission scheme capable of concealing truth while showing fake (CTSF), integrating both offensive and defensive strategies. Specifically, through multi-source cooperation, true and false signals are transmitted over multiple frequency bands using non-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. The decoy signals are used to deceive non-cooperative eavesdropper, while the true signals are hidden to counter interception threats. Definitions for the interception and deception probabilities are provided, and the mechanism of CTSF is discussed. To improve the secrecy performance of true signals while ensuring decoy signals achieve their deceptive purpose, we model the problem as maximizing the sum secrecy rate of true signals, with constraint on the decoy effect. Furthermore, we propose a bi-stage alternating dual-domain optimization approach for joint optimization of both power allocation and correlation coefficients among multiple sources, and a Newton's method is proposed for fitting the T/F frequency multiplexing factor. In addition, simulation results verify the efficiency of anti-intercepting performance of our proposed CTSF scheme.

Uncertainty Guided Refinement for Fine-Grained Salient Object Detection

Recently, salient object detection (SOD) methods have achieved impressive performance. However, salient regions predicted by existing methods usually contain unsaturated regions and shadows, which limits the model for reliable fine-grained predictions. To address this, we introduce the uncertainty guidance learning approach to SOD, intended to enhance the model's perception of uncertain regions. Specifically, we design a novel Uncertainty Guided Refinement Attention Network (UGRAN), which incorporates three important components, i.e., the Multilevel Interaction Attention (MIA) module, the Scale Spatial-Consistent Attention (SSCA) module, and the Uncertainty Refinement Attention (URA) module. Unlike conventional methods dedicated to enhancing features, the proposed MIA facilitates the interaction and perception of multilevel features, leveraging the complementary characteristics among multilevel features. Then, through the proposed SSCA, the salient information across diverse scales within the aggregated features can be integrated more comprehensively and integrally. In the subsequent steps, we utilize the uncertainty map generated from the saliency prediction map to enhance the model's perception capability of uncertain regions, generating a highly-saturated fine-grained saliency prediction map. Additionally, we devise an adaptive dynamic partition (ADP) mechanism to minimize the computational overhead of the URA module and improve the utilization of uncertainty guidance. Experiments on seven benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed UGRAN over the state-of-the-art methodologies. Codes will be released at https://github.com/I2-Multimedia-Lab/UGRAN.

Transonic Shocks for 2-D Steady Euler Flows with Large Gravity in a Nozzle for Polytropic Gases

In this paper, we are concerned with the existence of transonic shock solutions for two-dimensional (2-d) steady Euler flows of polytropic gases with the vertical gravity in a horizontal nozzle under a pressure condition imposed at the exit of the nozzle. The acceleration of the gravity g is assumed to take a generic value. We first show that the existence of special transonic shock solutions with the flow states depending only on the variable in the gravity direction can be established if and only if the Mach number of the incoming flow satisfies certain conditions. However, the shock position of the special solutions is arbitrary in the nozzle. We determine the shock position and establish the existence of transonic shock solution when the boundary data are small perturbations of the special shock solutions under certain conditions. Mathematically, the perturbation problem can be formulated as a free boundary problem of a nonlinear system of hyperbolic-elliptic mixed type and composite. Key difficulties in the analysis mainly comes from the vertical gravity. Methods and techniques are developed in this paper to deal with these key difficulties. Finally, it turns out that the vertical gravity plays a dominant role in the mechanism determining the shock position.

Uniqueness of Transonic Shock Solutions for Two-Dimensional Steady Compressible Euler Flows in an Expanding Nozzle

In this paper, we are trying to show the uniqueness of transonic shock solutions in an expanding nozzle under certain conditions and assumptions on the boundary data and the shock solution. The idea is to compare two transonic shock solutions and show that they should coincide if the perturbation of the nozzle is sufficiently small. To this end, a condition on the pressure of the flow across the shock front is proposed, such that a priori estimates for the subsonic flow behind the shock front could be established without the assumption that it is a small perturbation of the unperturbed uniform subsonic state. With the help of these estimates, the uniqueness of the position of the intersection point between the shock front and the nozzle boundary could be further established by demonstrating the monotonicity of the solvability condition for the elliptic sub-problem of the subsonic flow behind the shock front. Then, via contraction arguments, two transonic shock solutions could be verified to coincide as the perturbation is small, which leads to the uniqueness of the transonic shock solution.

SP-SLAM: Neural Real-Time Dense SLAM With Scene Priors

Neural implicit representations have recently shown promising progress in dense Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM). However, existing works have shortcomings in terms of reconstruction quality and real-time performance, mainly due to inflexible scene representation strategy without leveraging any prior information. In this paper, we introduce SP-SLAM, a novel neural RGB-D SLAM system that performs tracking and mapping in real-time. SP-SLAM computes depth images and establishes sparse voxel-encoded scene priors near the surfaces to achieve rapid convergence of the model. Subsequently, the encoding voxels computed from single-frame depth image are fused into a global volume, which facilitates high-fidelity surface reconstruction. Simultaneously, we employ tri-planes to store scene appearance information, striking a balance between achieving high-quality geometric texture mapping and minimizing memory consumption. Furthermore, in SP-SLAM, we introduce an effective optimization strategy for mapping, allowing the system to continuously optimize the poses of all historical input frames during runtime without increasing computational overhead. We conduct extensive evaluations on five benchmark datasets (Replica, ScanNet, TUM RGB-D, Synthetic RGB-D, 7-Scenes). The results demonstrate that, compared to existing methods, we achieve superior tracking accuracy and reconstruction quality, while running at a significantly faster speed.

Hybrid Network- and User-Centric Scalable Cell-Free Massive MIMO for Fronthaul Signaling Minimization

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) coordinates a great number of distributed access points (APs) with central processing units (CPUs), effectively reducing interference and ensuring uniform service quality for user equipment (UEs). However, its cooperative nature can result in intense fronthaul signaling between CPUs in large-scale networks. To reduce the inter-CPU fronthaul signaling for systems with limited fronthaul capacity, we propose a low-complexity online UE-AP association approach for scalable CFmMIMO that combines network- and user-centric clustering methodologies, relies on local channel information only, and can handle dynamic UE arrivals. Numerical results demonstrate that compared to the state-of-the-art method on fronthaul signaling minimization, our approach can save up to 94% of the fronthaul signaling load and 83% of the CPU processing power at the cost of only up to 8.6% spectral efficiency loss, or no loss in some cases.

MRIFE: A Mask-Recovering and Interactive-Feature-Enhancing Semantic Segmentation Network For Relic Landslide Detection

Relic landslide, formed over a long period, possess the potential for reactivation, making them a hazardous geological phenomenon. While reliable relic landslide detection benefits the effective monitoring and prevention of landslide disaster, semantic segmentation using high-resolution remote sensing images for relic landslides faces many challenges, including the object visual blur problem, due to the changes of appearance caused by prolonged natural evolution and human activities, and the small-sized dataset problem, due to difficulty in recognizing and labelling the samples. To address these challenges, a semantic segmentation model, termed mask-recovering and interactive-feature-enhancing (MRIFE), is proposed for more efficient feature extraction and separation. Specifically, a contrastive learning and mask reconstruction method with locally significant feature enhancement is proposed to improve the ability to distinguish between the target and background and represent landslide semantic features. Meanwhile, a dual-branch interactive feature enhancement architecture is used to enrich the extracted features and address the issue of visual ambiguity. Self-distillation learning is introduced to leverage the feature diversity both within and between samples for contrastive learning, improving sample utilization, accelerating model convergence, and effectively addressing the problem of the small-sized dataset. The proposed MRIFE is evaluated on a real relic landslide dataset, and experimental results show that it greatly improves the performance of relic landslide detection. For the semantic segmentation task, compared to the baseline, the precision increases from 0.4226 to 0.5347, the mean intersection over union (IoU) increases from 0.6405 to 0.6680, the landslide IoU increases from 0.3381 to 0.3934, and the F1-score increases from 0.5054 to 0.5646.

In-context Contrastive Learning for Event Causality Identification

Event Causality Identification (ECI) aims at determining the existence of a causal relation between two events. Although recent prompt learning-based approaches have shown promising improvements on the ECI task, their performance are often subject to the delicate design of multiple prompts and the positive correlations between the main task and derivate tasks. The in-context learning paradigm provides explicit guidance for label prediction in the prompt learning paradigm, alleviating its reliance on complex prompts and derivative tasks. However, it does not distinguish between positive and negative demonstrations for analogy learning. Motivated from such considerations, this paper proposes an In-Context Contrastive Learning (ICCL) model that utilizes contrastive learning to enhance the effectiveness of both positive and negative demonstrations. Additionally, we apply contrastive learning to event pairs to better facilitate event causality identification. Our ICCL is evaluated on the widely used corpora, including the EventStoryLine and Causal-TimeBank, and results show significant performance improvements over the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Existing script event prediction task forcasts the subsequent event based on an event script chain. However, the evolution of historical events are more complicated in real world scenarios and the limited information provided by the event script chain also make it difficult to accurately predict subsequent events. This paper introduces a Causality Graph Event Prediction(CGEP) task that forecasting consequential event based on an Event Causality Graph (ECG). We propose a Semantic Enhanced Distance-sensitive Graph Prompt Learning (SeDGPL) Model for the CGEP task. In SeDGPL, (1) we design a Distance-sensitive Graph Linearization (DsGL) module to reformulate the ECG into a graph prompt template as the input of a PLM; (2) propose an Event-Enriched Causality Encoding (EeCE) module to integrate both event contextual semantic and graph schema information; (3) propose a Semantic Contrast Event Prediction (ScEP) module to enhance the event representation among numerous candidate events and predict consequential event following prompt learning paradigm. %We construct two CGEP datasets based on existing MAVEN-ERE and ESC corpus for experiments. Experiment results validate our argument our proposed SeDGPL model outperforms the advanced competitors for the CGEP task.

Unleashing Collaborative Computing for Adaptive Video Streaming with Multi-objective Optimization in Satellite Terrestrial Networks

Satellite-terrestrial networks (STNs) are anticipated to deliver seamless IoT services across expansive regions. Given the constrained resources available for offloading computationally intensive tasks like video streaming, it is crucial to establish collaborative computing among diverse components within STNs. In this paper, we present the task offloading challenge as a multi-objective optimization problem, leveraging the collaboration between ground devices/users and satellites. We propose a collaborative computing scheme that optimally assigns computing tasks to various nodes within STNs to enhance service performance including quality of experience (QoE). This algorithm initially dynamically selects an end-to-end path that balances service time and resource utilization. For each selected path, a multi-agent soft actor-critic (MA-SAC)-based algorithm is introduced to make adaptive decisions and collaboratively assign optimal heterogeneous resources to the given computing tasks. In this algorithm, the ground station bridging satellite network and terrestrial network is treated as agent to extract the information from both STNs and users. Through MA-SAC, multiple agents cooperate to determine the adaptive bitrate and network resources for the arriving tasks. The numerical results demonstrate that our proposal outperforms comparative schemes across various computing tasks in terms of various criteria.

Intra-symbol Differential Amplitude Shift Keying-aided Blind Detector for Ambient Backscatter Communication Systems

Ambient backscatter communications (AmBC) are a promising technology for addressing the energy consumption challenge in wireless communications through the reflection or absorption of surrounding radio frequency (RF) signals. However, it grapples with the intricacies of ambient RF signal and the round-trip path loss. For traditional detectors, the incorporation of pilot sequences results in a reduction in spectral efficiency. Furthermore, traditional energy-based detectors are inherently susceptible to a notable error floor issue, attributed to the co-channel direct link interference (DLI). Consequently, this paper proposes a blind symbol detector without the prior knowledge of the channel state information, signal variance, and noise variance. By leveraging the intra-symbol differential amplitude shift keying (IDASK) scheme, this detector effectively redirects the majority of the DLI energy towards the largest eigenvalue of the received sample covariance matrix, thereby utilizing the second largest eigenvalue for efficient symbol detection. In addition, this paper conducts theoretical performance analyses of the proposed detector in terms of the false alarm probability, missed detection probability, and the bit-error rate (BER) lower bound. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed blind detector exhibits a significant enhancement in symbol detection performance compared to its traditional counterparts.

Identity-Consistent Diffusion Network for Grading Knee Osteoarthritis Progression in Radiographic Imaging

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA), a common form of arthritis that causes physical disability, has become increasingly prevalent in society. Employing computer-aided techniques to automatically assess the severity and progression of KOA can greatly benefit KOA treatment and disease management. Particularly, the advancement of X-ray technology in KOA demonstrates its potential for this purpose. Yet, existing X-ray prognosis research generally yields a singular progression severity grade, overlooking the potential visual changes for understanding and explaining the progression outcome. Therefore, in this study, a novel generative model is proposed, namely Identity-Consistent Radiographic Diffusion Network (IC-RDN), for multifaceted KOA prognosis encompassing a predicted future knee X-ray scan conditioned on the baseline scan. Specifically, an identity prior module for the diffusion and a downstream generation-guided progression prediction module are introduced. Compared to conventional image-to-image generative models, identity priors regularize and guide the diffusion to focus more on the clinical nuances of the prognosis based on a contrastive learning strategy. The progression prediction module utilizes both forecasted and baseline knee scans, and a more comprehensive formulation of KOA severity progression grading is expected. Extensive experiments on a widely used public dataset, OAI, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Hypersonic Similarity for Steady Compressible Full Euler Flows Over Two-Dimensional Lipschitz Wedges

We establish the optimal convergence rate to the hypersonic similarity law, which is also called the Mach number independence principle, for steady compressible full Euler flows over two-dimensional slender Lipschitz wedges. The problem can be formulated as the comparison of the entropy solutions in $BV\cap L^{1}$ between the two initial-boundary value problems for the compressible full Euler equations with parameter $τ>0$ and the hypersonic small-disturbance equations with curved characteristic boundaries. We establish the $L^1$--convergence estimate of these two solutions with the optimal convergence rate, which justifies Van Dyke's similarity theory rigorously for the compressible full Euler flows. This is the first mathematical result on the comparison of two solutions of the compressible Euler equations with characteristic boundary conditions. To achieve this, we first employ the special structures of the two systems and establish the global existence and the $L^1$--stability of the entropy solutions under the smallness assumptions on the total variation of both the initial data and the tangential slope function of the wedge boundary. Based on the $L^1$--stability properties of the approximate solutions to the scaled equations with parameter $τ$, a uniform Lipschtiz continuous map with respect to the initial data and the wedge boundary is obtained. Next, we compare the solutions given by the Riemann solvers of the two systems by taking the boundary perturbations into account case by case. Then, for a given fixed hypersonic similarity parameter, as the Mach number tends to infinity, we establish the desired $L^1$--convergence estimate with the optimal convergence rate. Finally, we show the optimality of the convergence rate by investigating a special solution.
