On the Siegel-Weil formula for classical groups over function fields

We establish a Siegel-Weil formula for classical groups over a function field with odd characteristic, which asserts in many cases that the Siegel Eisenstein series is equal to an integral of a theta function. This is a function-field analogue of the classical result proved by A. Weil in his 1965 Acta Math. paper. We also give a convergence criterion for the theta integral by using Harder's reduction theory over function fields.

Ultrafast Intercavity Nonlinear Couplings between Polaritons

Realizing nonlinear coupling across space can enable new scientific and technological advances, including ultrafast operation and propagation of information in IR photonic circuitry, remote triggering or catalyzing of chemical reactions, and new platforms for quantum simulations with increased complexities. In this report, we show that ultrafast nonlinear couplings are achieved between polaritons residing in different cavities, in the mid-infrared (IR) regime, e.g. by pumping polaritons in one cavity, the polaritons in the adjacent cavity can be affected. By hybridizing photon and molecular vibrational modes, molecular vibrational polaritons are formed that have the combined characteristic of both photon delocalization and molecular nonlinearity. Thus, although photons have little nonlinear coupling cross-section, and molecular nonlinearity is localized, the dual photon/molecule character of polaritons allows photons to affect each other across different cavities, through coupling to the same molecules - a novel property that neither molecular nor cavity mode would possess alone.

Example-Guided Scene Image Synthesis using Masked Spatial-Channel Attention and Patch-Based Self-Supervision

Example-guided image synthesis has been recently attempted to synthesize an image from a semantic label map and an exemplary image. In the task, the additional exemplary image serves to provide style guidance that controls the appearance of the synthesized output. Despite the controllability advantage, the previous models are designed on datasets with specific and roughly aligned objects. In this paper, we tackle a more challenging and general task, where the exemplar is an arbitrary scene image that is semantically unaligned to the given label map. To this end, we first propose a new Masked Spatial-Channel Attention (MSCA) module which models the correspondence between two unstructured scenes via cross-attention. Next, we propose an end-to-end network for joint global and local feature alignment and synthesis. In addition, we propose a novel patch-based self-supervision scheme to enable training. Experiments on the large-scale CCOO-stuff dataset show significant improvements over existing methods. Moreover, our approach provides interpretability and can be readily extended to other tasks including style and spatial interpolation or extrapolation, as well as other content manipulation.

Manipulating Optical Nonlinearities of Molecular Polaritons by Delocalization

Optical nonlinearities - how light-matter interactions are influenced by previous interactions with photons, are key resources in the contemporary photonics toolbox, relevant to quantum gate operations and all-optical switches. Optical nonlinearities of materials are often controlled at the microscopic level by chemical modification, which makes on-the-fly manipulation of such response challenging. Tunability of optical nonlinearities in the mid-IR is even less developed, hindering its applications in chemical sensing or IR photonic circuitry. Here, we report control of vibrational polariton coherent nonlinearities by manipulation of macroscopic parameters such as cavity longitudinal length or molecular concentration. These emergent nonlinearities last for the lifetime of the cavity mode, and subsequently evolve into the response determined by an incoherent population of dark reservoir modes. The observed phenomena arise due to the nonlinear macroscopic polarization stemming from strong coupling between microscopic molecular excitations and a macroscopic photonic cavity mode.

Dynamic high efficiency 3D meta-holography in visible range with large frames number and high frame rate based on space division multiplexing design

Hologram is an ideal method for naked eye three-dimensional (3D) display, and computer-generated holography (CGH) makes it possible to reconstruct virtual objects. However, the large pixel size of common CGH devices results in shortages in the applications of hologram, such as narrow field of view, twin images, multi-diffraction orders, et al. Meanwhile, metasurfaces consisted of subwavelength structures show great potential in controlling of light which is suitable for hologram design. There are many inspired works to achieve dynamic meta-hologram as we summary in this paper. And it can be concluded that there is still not such a research work of meta-holography with high efficiency and good display quality in the visible range that can show smooth holographic videos with a large frames number and high frame rate. In current work, we demonstrate a new design of meta-holography in visible range based on space division multiplexing metasurface which can achieve 228 different holographic frames and a very high frame rate (maximum of frame rate, 9523 FPS). Also, the metasurface consists of silicon nitride (SiNx) nanopillars with high efficiency (more than 70%). This method can not only satisfy the needs of holographic display but also be suitable for many different research fields, such as laser fabrication, photolithography, 3D forming of two-photon polymerization and optics information processing, et al.

Numerical Study of Evaporative Cooling in the Space Station

In this paper, we numerically studied the effects of mechanical vibration and magnetic fields on evaporative cooling process carried in space station by direct simulation Monte Carlo method. Simulated with the vibration data of international space station, we found that the cooling process would suffer great atomic losses until the accelerations reduced tenfold at least. In addition, if we enlarge the s-wave scattering length five times by Feshbach resonance, the PSD increased to 50 compared to 3 of no magnetic fields situation after 5 seconds evaporative cooling. We also simulated the two stages crossed beam evaporative cooling process (TSCBC) under both physical impacts and obtain $4\times10^5$ $^{85}$Rb atoms with a temperature of 8 pK. These results are of significance to the cold atom experiments carried out on space station in the future.

Modeling spontaneous charge transfer at metal/organic hybrid heterostructures

Hybrid materials are crucial in photovoltaics where the overall efficiency of the heterostructure is closely related to the level of charge transfer at the interface. Here, using various metal / poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) heterostructure models, we reveal that the level of spontaneous charge transfer and electronic coupling at these interfaces depend on the conformational regularity of the organic polymer deposited on the metal substrate. Using ab-initio quantum chemical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and heterodyne vibrational sum frequency generation (HD-VSFG) measurements, we show that inducing regio-randomness into the organic polymer modifies the intensity of interfacial electronic states, level of hybridization, density of interfacial charge transfer and the electronic wave function of the material. We present the HD-VSFG responses of the metal/P3HT heterojunctions containing both regio-regular and regio-random P3HT structures and show that the amount of non-resonant signal is closely related to the level of the spontaneous charge transfer at the interface. Thus, by measuring the non-resonant response of the metal/P3HT heterojunctions, the level of spontaneous charge transfer at the interface can be determined.

Spin squeezing via one- and two-axis twisting induced by a single off-resonance stimulated Raman scattering in a cavity

Squeezed spin states have important applications in quantum metrology and sensing. It has been shown by Sørensen and Mølmer [Phys. Rev. A 66, 022314(2002)] that an effective one-axis-twisting interaction can be realized in a cavity setup via a double off-resonance stimulated Raman scattering, resulting in a noise reduction scaling $\propto 1/N^{2/3}$ with $N$ being the atom number. Here, we show that, by making an appropriate change of the initial input spin state, it is possible to produce a one-axis-twisting spin squeezing via a \emph{single} off-resonance stimulated Raman scattering, which thus can greatly simplify the realistic implementation. We also show that the one-axis-twisting interaction can be transformed into a more efficient two-axis-twisting interaction by rotating the collective spin while coupling to the cavity, yielding a Heisenberg limited noise reduction $\propto1/N$. Considering the noise effects due to atomic decoherence and cavity decay, we find that substantial squeezing is still attainable with current laboratory techniques.

Foreground-aware Image Inpainting

Existing image inpainting methods typically fill holes by borrowing information from surrounding pixels. They often produce unsatisfactory results when the holes overlap with or touch foreground objects due to lack of information about the actual extent of foreground and background regions within the holes. These scenarios, however, are very important in practice, especially for applications such as the removal of distracting objects. To address the problem, we propose a foreground-aware image inpainting system that explicitly disentangles structure inference and content completion. Specifically, our model learns to predict the foreground contour first, and then inpaints the missing region using the predicted contour as guidance. We show that by such disentanglement, the contour completion model predicts reasonable contours of objects, and further substantially improves the performance of image inpainting. Experiments show that our method significantly outperforms existing methods and achieves superior inpainting results on challenging cases with complex compositions.

Observation of atom-number fluctuations in optical lattices via quantum collapse and revival dynamics

Using the quantum collapse and revival phenomenon of a Bose--Einstein condensate in three-dimensional optical lattices, the atom number statistics on each lattice site are experimentally investigated. We observe an interaction driven time evolution of on-site number fluctuations in a constant lattice potential with the collapse and revival time ratio as the figure of merit. Through a shortcut loading procedure, we prepare a three-dimensional array of coherent states with Poissonian number fluctuations. The following dynamics clearly show the interaction effect on the evolution of the number fluctuations from Poissonian to sub-Poissonian. Our method can be used to create squeezed states which are important in precision measurement.

CariGAN: Caricature Generation through Weakly Paired Adversarial Learning

Caricature generation is an interesting yet challenging task. The primary goal is to generate plausible caricatures with reasonable exaggerations given face images. Conventional caricature generation approaches mainly use low-level geometric transformations such as image warping to generate exaggerated images, which lack richness and diversity in terms of content and style. The recent progress in generative adversarial networks (GANs) makes it possible to learn an image-to-image transformation from data, so that richer contents and styles can be generated. However, directly applying the GAN-based models to this task leads to unsatisfactory results because there is a large variance in the caricature distribution. Moreover, some models require strictly paired training data which largely limits their usage scenarios. In this paper, we propose CariGAN overcome these problems. Instead of training on paired data, CariGAN learns transformations only from weakly paired images. Specifically, to enforce reasonable exaggeration and facial deformation, facial landmarks are adopted as an additional condition to constrain the generated image. Furthermore, an attention mechanism is introduced to encourage our model to focus on the key facial parts so that more vivid details in these regions can be generated. Finally, a Diversity Loss is proposed to encourage the model to produce diverse results to help alleviate the `mode collapse' problem of the conventional GAN-based models. Extensive experiments on a new large-scale `WebCaricature' dataset show that the proposed CariGAN can generate more plausible caricatures with larger diversity compared with the state-of-the-art models.

Amplification of the coupling strength in a hybrid quantum system

Realization of strong coupling between two different quantum systems is important for fast transferring quantum information between them, but its implementation is difficult in some hybrid quantum systems. Here we propose a scheme to enhance the coupling strength between a single nitrogen-vacancy center and a superconducting circuit via squeezing. The main recipe of our scheme is to construct a unitary squeezing transformation by directly tuning the specifically-designed superconducting circuit. Using the experimentally accessible parameters of the circuit, we find that the coupling strength can be largely amplified by applying the squeezing transformations to the system. This provides a new path to enhance the coupling strengths in hybrid quantum systems.

Learning to Generate Time-Lapse Videos Using Multi-Stage Dynamic Generative Adversarial Networks

Taking a photo outside, can we predict the immediate future, e.g., how would the cloud move in the sky? We address this problem by presenting a generative adversarial network (GAN) based two-stage approach to generating realistic time-lapse videos of high resolution. Given the first frame, our model learns to generate long-term future frames. The first stage generates videos of realistic contents for each frame. The second stage refines the generated video from the first stage by enforcing it to be closer to real videos with regard to motion dynamics. To further encourage vivid motion in the final generated video, Gram matrix is employed to model the motion more precisely. We build a large scale time-lapse dataset, and test our approach on this new dataset. Using our model, we are able to generate realistic videos of up to $128\times 128$ resolution for 32 frames. Quantitative and qualitative experiment results have demonstrated the superiority of our model over the state-of-the-art models.

Revealing Hidden Vibration Polariton Interactions by 2D IR Spectroscopy

We report the first experimental two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectra of novel molecular photonic excitations - vibrational-polaritons. The application of advanced 2D IR spectroscopy onto novel vibrational-polariton challenges and advances our understanding in both fields. From spectroscopy aspect, 2D IR spectra of polaritons differ drastically from free uncoupled molecules; from vibrational-polariton aspects, 2D IR uniquely resolves hybrid light-matter polariton excitations and unexpected dark states in a state-selective manner and revealed hidden interactions between them. Moreover, 2D IR signals highlight the role of vibrational anharmonicities in generating non-linear signals. To further advance our knowledge on 2D IR of vibrational polaritons, we develop a new quantum-mechanical model incorporating the effects of both nuclear and electrical anharmonicities on vibrational-polaritons and their 2D IR signals. This work reveals polariton physics that is difficult or impossible to probe with traditional linear spectroscopy and lays the foundation for investigating new non-linear optics and chemistry of molecular vibrational-polaritons.

Theory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy of Vibrational Polaritons

Molecular polaritons have gained considerable attention due to their potential to control nanoscale molecular processes by harnessing electromagnetic coherence. Although recent experiments with liquid-phase vibrational polaritons have shown great promise for exploiting these effects, significant challenges remain in interpreting their spectroscopic signatures. In this letter, we develop a quantum-mechanical theory of pump-probe spectroscopy for this class of polaritons based on the quantum Langevin equations and the input-output theory. Comparison with recent experimental data shows good agreement upon consideration of the various vibrational anharmonicities that modulate the signals. Finally, a simple and intuitive interpretation of the data based on an effective mode-coupling theory is provided. Our work provides a solid theoretical framework to elucidate nonlinear optical properties of molecular polaritons as well as to analyze further multidimensional spectroscopy experiments on these systems.

Magnon Kerr effect in a strongly coupled cavity-magnon system

We experimentally demonstrate magnon Kerr effect in a cavity-magnon system, where magnons in a small yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere are strongly but dispersively coupled to the photons in a three-dimensional cavity. When the YIG sphere is pumped to generate considerable magnons, the Kerr effect yields a perceptible shift of the cavity's central frequency and more appreciable shifts of the magnon modes. We derive an analytical relation between the magnon frequency shift and the drive power for the uniformly magnetized YIG sphere and find that it agrees very well with the experimental results of the Kittel mode. Our study paves the way to explore nonlinear effects in the cavity-magnon system.

Four-junction superconducting circuit

We develop a theory for the quantum circuit consisting of a superconducting loop interrupted by four Josephson junctions and pierced by a magnetic flux (either static or time-dependent). In addition to the similarity with the typical three-junction flux qubit in the double-well regime, we demonstrate the difference of the four-junction circuit from its three-junction analogue, including its advantages over the latter. Moreover, the four-junction circuit in the single-well regime is also investigated. Our theory provides a tool to explore the physical properties of this four-junction superconducting circuit.
