Sum-Rate Maximization of Uplink Rate Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) Communication

In this paper, the problem of maximizing the wireless users' sum-rate for uplink rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) communications is studied. In the considered model, each user transmits a superposition of two messages to a base station (BS) with separate transmit power and the BS uses a successive decoding technique to decode the received messages. To maximize each user's transmission rate, the users must adjust their transmit power and the BS must determine the decoding order of the messages transmitted from the users to the BS. This problem is formulated as a sum-rate maximization problem with proportional rate constraints by adjusting the users' transmit power and the BS's decoding order. However, since the decoding order variable in the optimization problem is discrete, the original maximization problem with transmit power and decoding order variables can be transformed into a problem with only the rate splitting variable. Then, the optimal rate splitting of each user is determined. Given the optimal rate splitting of each user and a decoding order, the optimal transmit power of each user is calculated. Next, the optimal decoding order is determined by an exhaustive search method. To further reduce the complexity of the optimization algorithm used for sum-rate maximization in RSMA, a user pairing based algorithm is introduced, which enables two users to use RSMA in each pair and also enables the users in different pairs to be allocated with orthogonal frequency. For comparisons, the optimal sum-rate maximizing solutions with proportional rate constraints are obtained in closed form for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), and time division multiple access (TDMA). Simulation results show that RSMA can achieve up to 10.0\%, 22.2\%, and 83.7\% gains in terms of sum-rate compared to NOMA, FDMA, and TDMA.

Secrecy Rate Maximization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Multi-Antenna Communications

We investigate transmission optimization for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-antenna systems from the physical-layer security perspective. The design goal is to maximize the system secrecy rate subject to the source transmit power constraint and the unit modulus constraints imposed on phase shifts at the IRS. To solve this complicated non-convex problem, we develop an efficient alternating algorithm where the solutions to the transmit covariance of the source and the phase shift matrix of the IRS are achieved in closed form and semi-closed forms, respectively. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is guaranteed theoretically. Simulations results validate the performance advantage of the proposed optimized design.

Localizing Adverts in Outdoor Scenes

Online videos have witnessed an unprecedented growth over the last decade, owing to wide range of content creation. This provides the advertisement and marketing agencies plethora of opportunities for targeted advertisements. Such techniques involve replacing an existing advertisement in a video frame, with a new advertisement. However, such post-processing of online videos is mostly done manually by video editors. This is cumbersome and time-consuming. In this paper, we propose DeepAds -- a deep neural network, based on the simple encoder-decoder architecture, that can accurately localize the position of an advert in a video frame. Our approach of localizing billboards in outdoor scenes using neural nets, is the first of its kind, and achieves the best performance. We benchmark our proposed method with other semantic segmentation algorithms, on a public dataset of outdoor scenes with manually annotated billboard binary maps.

The CASE Dataset of Candidate Spaces for Advert Implantation

With the advent of faster internet services and growth of multimedia content, we observe a massive growth in the number of online videos. The users generate these video contents at an unprecedented rate, owing to the use of smart-phones and other hand-held video capturing devices. This creates immense potential for the advertising and marketing agencies to create personalized content for the users. In this paper, we attempt to assist the video editors to generate augmented video content, by proposing candidate spaces in video frames. We propose and release a large-scale dataset of outdoor scenes, along with manually annotated maps for candidate spaces. We also benchmark several deep-learning based semantic segmentation algorithms on this proposed dataset.

The ALOS Dataset for Advert Localization in Outdoor Scenes

The rapid increase in the number of online videos provides the marketing and advertising agents ample opportunities to reach out to their audience. One of the most widely used strategies is product placement, or embedded marketing, wherein new advertisements are integrated seamlessly into existing advertisements in videos. Such strategies involve accurately localizing the position of the advert in the image frame, either manually in the video editing phase, or by using machine learning frameworks. However, these machine learning techniques and deep neural networks need a massive amount of data for training. In this paper, we propose and release the first large-scale dataset of advertisement billboards, captured in outdoor scenes. We also benchmark several state-of-the-art semantic segmentation algorithms on our proposed dataset.

Widely distributed clusters of the constraint satisfaction problem model d-k-CSP

Relation between problem hardness and solution space structure is an important research aspect. Model d-k-CSP generates very hard instances when $r=1$ and $r$ is near 1, where $r$ represents normalized constraint density. We find that when $r$ is below and close to 1, the solution space contains many widely distributed well-separated small cluster-regions (a cluster-region is a union of some clusters), which should the reason that the generated instances are hard to solve.

Learning Good Representation via Continuous Attention

In this paper we present our scientific discovery that good representation can be learned via continuous attention during the interaction between Unsupervised Learning(UL) and Reinforcement Learning(RL) modules driven by intrinsic motivation. Specifically, we designed intrinsic rewards generated from UL modules for driving the RL agent to focus on objects for a period of time and to learn good representations of objects for later object recognition task. We evaluate our proposed algorithm in both with and without extrinsic reward settings. Experiments with end-to-end training in simulated environments with applications to few-shot object recognition demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Rethinking Uplink Hybrid Processing: When is Pure Analog Processing Suggested?

In this correspondence, we analytically characterize the benefit of digital processing in uplink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with sub-connected hybrid architecture. By assuming that the number of radio frequency (RF) chains is equal to that of users, we characterize achievable rates of both pure analog detection and hybrid detection under the i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channel model. From the derived expressions, we discover that the analog processing can outperform the hybrid processing using the maximal ratio combining (MRC) or zero-forcing (ZF) criterion in cases under some engineering assumptions. Performance comparison of the schemes are presented under tests with various numbers of users and numbers of antennas at the base station.

Full Attitude Control of an Efficient Quadrotor Tail-sitter VTOL UAV with Flexible Modes

In this paper, we present a full attitude control of an efficient quadrotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV with flexible modes. This control system is working in all flight modes without any control surfaces but motor differential thrusts. This paper concentrates on the design of the attitude controller and the altitude controller. For the attitude control, the controller's parameters and filters are optimized based on the frequency response model which is identified from the sweep experiment. As a result, the effect of system flexible modes is easily compensated in frequency-domain by using a notch filter, and the resulting attitude loop shows superior tracking performance and robustness. In the coordinated flight condition, the altitude controller is structured as the feedforward-feedback parallel controller. The feedforward thrust command is calculated based on the current speed and the pitch angle. Tests in hovering, forward accelerating and forward decelerating flights have been conducted to verify the proposed control system.

$λ$ phase transition in Horava gravity

Recently superfluid black holes are reported in Lovelock gravity with conformally coupled scalar field [Robie A. Hennigar, Robert B. Mann, Erickson Tjoa, Phys.Rev.Lett. 118 (2017) no.2, 021301]. In this paper, we present another example of black holes containing $λ$ phase transition in Horava gravity. After studying the extended thermodynamics of general dimensional Horava-Lifshitz AdS black holes, it is found that only the one with spherical horizon in four and five dimensions have a $λ$ phase transition, which is a line of (continuous) second order phase transitions and was famous in the discussion of superfluidity of liquid ${}^4$He. The "superfluid" black hole phase and "normal" black hole phase are also distinguished. Especially, six dimensional Horava-Lifshitz AdS black holes exhibit infinitely many critical points in $P-ν$ plane and the divergent points for specific heat, for which they only contain the "normal" black hole phase and the "superfluid" black hole phase disappears due to the physical temperature constraint; therefore there is no similar phase transition. In more than six dimensions, there is no $P-ν$ critical behavior. After choosing the appropriate ordering field, we study the critical phenomena in different planes of thermodynamical phase space. We also calculate the critical exponents, which are the same with the van der Waals fluid.

No Place to Hide: Catching Fraudulent Entities in Tensors

Many approaches focus on detecting dense blocks in the tensor of multimodal data to prevent fraudulent entities (e.g., accounts, links) from retweet boosting, hashtag hijacking, link advertising, etc. However, no existing method is effective to find the dense block if it only possesses high density on a subset of all dimensions in tensors. In this paper, we novelly identify dense-block detection with dense-subgraph mining, by modeling a tensor into a weighted graph without any density information lost. Based on the weighted graph, which we call information sharing graph (ISG), we propose an algorithm for finding multiple densest subgraphs, D-Spot, that is faster (up to 11x faster than the state-of-the-art algorithm) and can be computed in parallel. In an N-dimensional tensor, the entity group found by the ISG+D-Spot is at least 1/2 of the optimum with respect to density, compared with the 1/N guarantee ensured by competing methods. We use nine datasets to demonstrate that ISG+D-Spot becomes new state-of-the-art dense-block detection method in terms of accuracy specifically for fraud detection.

Joint Time-Frequency Splitting for Multiuser SWIPT OFDM Networks

In this paper, we propose a joint time-frequency splitting (TFS) strategy for a multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). In TFS, the time sharing factors for each user on different subcarriers are optimized via maximizing the sum rate of users with both information and energy quality of service (QoS) constraints. Though the original problem is nonconvex, we first transform it into an equivalent convex problem through an appropriate variable transformation. Then, we present an iterative algorithm based on semi closed form with low complexity. Numerical results show that the proposed TFS outperforms the conventional time-sharing and subcarrier-separation strategies.

Secure Massive MIMO Communication with Low-resolution DACs

In this paper, we investigate secure transmission in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system adopting low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Artificial noise (AN) is deliberately transmitted simultaneously with the confidential signals to degrade the eavesdropper's channel quality. By applying the Bussgang theorem, a DAC quantization model is developed which facilitates the analysis of the asymptotic achievable secrecy rate. Interestingly, for a fixed power allocation factor $ϕ$, low-resolution DACs typically result in a secrecy rate loss, but in certain cases they provide superior performance, e.g., at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Specifically, we derive a closed-form SNR threshold which determines whether low-resolution or high-resolution DACs are preferable for improving the secrecy rate. Furthermore, a closed-form expression for the optimal $ϕ$ is derived. With AN generated in the null-space of the user channel and the optimal $ϕ$, low-resolution DACs inevitably cause secrecy rate loss. On the other hand, for random AN with the optimal $ϕ$, the secrecy rate is hardly affected by the DAC resolution because the negative impact of the quantization noise can be compensated for by reducing the AN power. All the derived analytical results are verified by numerical simulations.

Optimal Multiuser Loading in Quantized Massive MIMO under Spatially Correlated Channels

Low-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has shown great potential in facilitating cost- and power-efficient implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We investigate the performance of a massive MIMO downlink network with low-resolution DACs using regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. It serves multiple receivers equipped with finite-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). By taking the quantization errors at both the transmitter and receivers into account under spatially correlated channels, the regularization parameter for RZF is optimized with a closed-form solution by applying the asymptotic random matrix theory. The optimal regularization parameter increases linearly with respect to the user loading ratio while independent of the ADC quantization resolution and the channel correlation. Furthermore, asymptotic sum rate performance is characterized and a closed-form expression for the optimal user loading ratio is obtained at low signal-to-noise ratio. The optimal ratio increases with the DAC resolution while it decreases with the ADC resolution. Numerical simulations verify our observations.

Mg$_{3+δ}$Sb$_x$Bi$_{2-x}$ family: A promising substitute for the start-of-art n-type thermoelectric materials near room temperature

Bi2Te3-xSex family has been the n-type start-of-the-art thermoelectric materials near room temperatures (RT) for more than half-century, which dominates the active cooling and novel waves harvesting application near RT. However, the drawbacks of brittle nature and Te-containing restrict the further applications exploring. Here, we show that a Mg3+δSbxBi2-x family ((ZT)avg =1.05) could be a promising substitute for the Bi2Te3-xSex family ((ZT)avg =0.9-1.0) in the temperature range of 50-250 °C based on the comparable thermoelectric performance through a synergistic effect from the tunable band gap using the alloy effect and the suppressible Mg-vacancy formation using interstitial Mn dopant. The former is to shift the optimal thermoelectric performance to near RT, and latter is helpful to partially decouple the electrical transport and thermal transport in order to get an optimal RT power factor. A positive temperature-dependence of band gap suggested this family is also a superior medium-temperature thermoelectric material for the significantly suppressed bipolar effect. Furthermore, a two times higher mechanical toughness, compared with Bi2Te3-xSex family, consolidates the promising substitute for the start-of-art n-type thermoelectric materials near RT.

Scaling Limits for Crump-Mode-Jagers Processes with Immigration via Stochastic Volterra Equations

In this paper, we firstly give a reconstruction for Crump-Mode-Jagers processes with immigration as solutions to a class of stochastic Volterra integral equations, which offers us a new insight for the evolution dynamics of age-dependent population. Based on this new representation, we prove the weak convergence of rescaled Crump-Mode-Jagers processes with immigration to a class of continuous-state branching processes with immigration. Moreover, the limits reveal that the individual law mainly changes the branching mechanism and immigration mechanism proportionally. This covers the results obtained by Lambert et al. [35] for subcritical binary Crump-Mode-Jagers processes.

MIMO Channel Information Feedback Using Deep Recurrent Network

In a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the availability of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is essential for performance improvement. Recent convolutional neural network (NN) based techniques show competitive ability in realizing CSI compression and feedback. By introducing a new NN architecture, we enhance the accuracy of quantized CSI feedback in MIMO communications. The proposed NN architecture invokes a module named long short-term memory (LSTM) which admits the NN to benefit from exploiting temporal and frequency correlations of wireless channels. Compromising performance with complexity, we further modify the NN architecture with a significantly reduced number of parameters to be trained. Finally, experiments show that the proposed NN architectures achieve better performance in terms of both CSI compression and recovery accuracy.

ADNet: A Deep Network for Detecting Adverts

Online video advertising gives content providers the ability to deliver compelling content, reach a growing audience, and generate additional revenue from online media. Recently, advertising strategies are designed to look for original advert(s) in a video frame, and replacing them with new adverts. These strategies, popularly known as product placement or embedded marketing, greatly help the marketing agencies to reach out to a wider audience. However, in the existing literature, such detection of candidate frames in a video sequence for the purpose of advert integration, is done manually. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning architecture called ADNet, that automatically detects the presence of advertisements in video frames. Our approach is the first of its kind that automatically detects the presence of adverts in a video frame, and achieves state-of-the-art results on a public dataset.
