Non-relativistic Supersymmetry

We construct an N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory from z=3 Lifshitz field theory. By modifying the supersymmetry (susy) algebra based on the spacetime symmetry SO(3) $\times$ scaling symmetry, we get a supersymmetric Lagrangian with scalar, fermion and gauge fields, all of whom have the same limiting speed. This solves some naturalness problems of the original Lifshitz theory which is characterized by Lorentz symmetry violation. In order that the susy breaking does not introduce any disastrous terms into the theory, the susy breaking scale is required to be smaller than the scale of Lorentz symmetry violation.

Leptons from Dark Matter Annihilation in Milky Way Subhalos

Numerical simulations of dark matter collapse and structure formation show that in addition to a large halo surrounding the baryonic component of our galaxy, there also exists a significant number of subhalos that extend hundreds of kiloparsecs beyond the edge of the observable Milky Way. We find that for dark matter (DM) annihilation models, galactic subhalos can significantly modify the spectrum of electrons and positrons as measured at our galactic position. Using data from the recent Via Lactea II simulation we include the subhalo contribution of electrons and positrons as boundary source terms for simulations of high energy cosmic ray propagation with a modified version of the publicly available GALPROP code. Focusing on the DM DM -> 4e annihilation channel, we show that including subhalos leads to a better fit to both the Fermi and PAMELA data. The best fit gives a dark matter particle mass of 1.2 TeV, for boost factors of 90 in the main halo and 1950-3800 in the subhalos (depending on assumptions about the background), in contrast to the 0.85 TeV mass that gives the best fit in the main halo-only scenario. These fits suggest that at least a third of the observed electron cosmic rays from DM annihilation could come from subhalos, opening up the possibility of a relaxation of recent stringent constraints from inverse Compton gamma rays originating from the high-energy leptons.

Fluctuations in a Hořava-Lifshitz Bouncing Cosmology

Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is a potentially UV complete theory with important implications for the very early universe. In particular, in the presence of spatial curvature it is possible to obtain a non-singular bouncing cosmology. The bounce is realized as a consequence of higher order spatial curvature terms in the gravitational action. Here, we extend the study of linear cosmological perturbations in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity coupled to matter in the case when spatial curvature is present. As in the case without spatial curvature, we find that there is no extra dynamical degree of freedom for scalar metric perturbations. We study the evolution of fluctuations through the bounce and show that the solutions remain non-singular throughout. If we start with quantum vacuum fluctuations on sub-Hubble scales in the contracting phase, and if the contracting phase is dominated by pressure-less matter, then for $λ= 1$ and in the infrared limit the perturbations at late times are scale invariant. Thus, Hořava-Lifshitz gravity can provide a realization of the ``matter bounce'' scenario of structure formation.

Thermal Fluctuations and Bouncing Cosmologies

We study the conditions under which thermal fluctuations generated in the contracting phase of a non-singular bouncing cosmology can lead to a scale-invariant spectrum of cosmological fluctuations at late times in the expanding phase. We consider point particle gases, holographic gases and string gases. In the models thus identified, we also study the thermal non-Gaussianities of the resulting distribution of inhomogeneities. For regular point particle radiation, we find that the background must have an equation of state $w = 7/3$ in order to obtain a scale-invariant spectrum, and that the non-Gaussianities are suppressed on scales larger than the thermal wavelength. For Gibbons-Hawking radiation, we find that a matter-dominated background yields scale-invariance, and that the non-Gaussianities are large. String gases are also briefly considered.

Non-Gaussianity in a Matter Bounce

A nonsingular bouncing cosmology in which the scales of interest today exit the Hubble radius in a matter-dominated contracting phase yields an alternative to inflation for producing a scale-invariant spectrum of adiabatic cosmological fluctuations. In this paper we identify signatures in the non-Gaussianities of the fluctuations which are specific to this scenario and allow it to be distinguished from the results of inflationary models.

$α$-vacuum and inflationary bispectrum

In this paper, we discuss the non-Guassianity originated from the $α$-vacuum on the CMB anisotropy. For $α$-vacuum, there exist correlation between points in the acausal two patches of de Sitter spactime. Such kind of correlation can lead to large local form non-Guassianity in $α$-vacuum. For the single field slow-roll inflationary scenario, the spacetime is in a quasi-de Sitter phase during the inflation. We will show that the $α$-vacuum in this case will lead to non-Gaussianity with distinguished feature, of a large local form and a very different shape.

Cosmic Ray Positrons from Cosmic Strings

We study the spectrum of cosmic ray positrons produced by a scaling distribution of non-superconducting cosmic strings. In this scenario, the positrons are produced from the jets which form from the cosmic string cusp annihilation process. The spectral shape is a robust feature of our scenario, and is in good agreement with the results from the recent PAMELA and ATIC experiments. In particular, the model predicts a sharp upper cutoff in the spectrum, and a flux which rises as the upper cutoff is approached. The energy at which the flux peaks is determined by the initial jet energy. The amplitude of the flux can be adjusted by changing the cosmic string tension and also depends on the cusp annihilation efficiency.

N-flation from multiple DBI type actions

In this letter we present a new N-flation model constructed by making use of multiple scalar fields which are being described by their own DBI action. We show that the dependence of the e-folding number and of the curvature perturbation on the number of fields changes compared with the normal N-flation model. Our model is also quite different from the usual DBI N-flation which is still based on one DBI action but involves many moduli components. Some specific examples of our model have been analyzed.

Revisiting non-Gaussianity of multiple-field inflation from the field equation

In the present paper, we study the non-Gaussianity of multiple-field inflation model using the method of the field equation. We start from reviewing the background and the perturbation theory of multiple-field inflation, and then derive the Klein-Gorden equation for the perturbations at second order. Afterward, we calculate the tree-level bispectrum of the fields' perturbations and finally give the corresponding parameter $f_{NL}$ for the curvature perturbation $ζ$ in virtue of the $δN$ formalism. We also compare our result with the one already obtained from the Lagrangian formalism, and find they are consistent. This work may help us understand perturbation theory of inflation more deeply.

String Gas Cosmology and Non-Gaussianities

Recently it has been shown that string gas cosmology, an alternative model of the very early universe which does not involve a period of cosmological inflation, can give rise to an almost scale invariant spectrum of metric perturbations. Here we calculate the non-Gaussianities of the spectrum of cosmological fluctuations in string gas cosmology, and find that these non-Gaussianities depend linearly on the wave number and that their amplitude depends sensitively on the string scale. If the string scale is at the TeV scale, string gas cosmology could lead to observable non-Gaussianities, if it is close to the Planck scale, then the non-Gaussianities on current cosmological scales are negligible.

Non-commutative Geometry Modified Non-Gaussianities of Cosmological Perturbation

We investigate the noncommutative effect on the non-Gaussianities of primordial cosmological perturbation. In the lowest order of string length and slow-roll parameter, we find that in the models with small speed of sound the noncommutative modifications could be observable if assuming a relatively low string scale. In particular, the dominant modification of non-Gaussianity estimator f_{NL} could reach O(1) in DBI inflation and K-inflation. The corrections are sensitive to the speed of sound and the choice of string length scale. Moreover the shapes of the corrected non-Gaussianities are distinct from that of ordinary ones.

Inflationary NonGaussianity from Thermal Fluctuations

We calculate the contribution of the fluctuations with the thermal origin to the inflationary nonGaussianity. We find that even a small component of radiation can lead to a large nonGaussianity. We show that this thermal nonGaussianity always has positive $f_{\rm NL}$. We illustrate our result in the chain inflation model and the very weakly dissipative warm inflation model. We show that $f_{NL}\sim {\cal O}(1)$ is general in such models. If we allow modified equation of state, or some decoupling effects, the large thermal nonGaussianity of order $f_{\rm NL}>5$ or even $f_{\rm NL}\sim 100$ can be produced. We also show that the power spectrum of chain inflation should have a thermal origin. In the Appendix A, we made a clarification on the different conventions used in the literature related to the calculation of $f_{\rm NL}$.

Generalized Space-time Noncommutative Inflation

We study the noncommutative inflation with a time-dependent noncommutativity between space and time. From the numerical analysis of power law inflation, there are clues that the CMB spectrum indicates a nonconstant noncommutative inflation. Then we extend our treatment to the inflation models with more general noncommutativity and find that the scalar perturbation power spectrum depends sensitively on the time varying of the spacetime noncommutativity. This stringy effect may be probed in the future cosmological observations.
