Raptor Encoding for Low-Latency Concurrent Multi-PDU Session Transmission with Security Consideration in B5G Edge Network

In B5G edge networks, end-to-end low-latency and high-reliability transmissions between edge computing nodes and terminal devices are essential. This paper investigates the queue-aware coding scheduling transmission of randomly arriving data packets, taking into account potential eavesdroppers in edge networks. To address these concerns, we introduce SCLER, a Protocol Data Units (PDU) Raptor-encoded multi-path transmission method that overcomes the challenges of a larger attack surface in Concurrent Multipath Transfer (CMT), excessive delay due to asymmetric delay\&bandwidth, and lack of interaction among PDU session bearers. We propose a secure and reliable transmission scheme based on Raptor encoding and distribution that incorporates a queue length-aware encoding strategy. This strategy is modeled using Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP), and we solve the constraint optimization problem of optimal decision-making based on a threshold strategy. Numerical results indicate that SCLER effectively reduces data leakage risks while achieving the optimal balance between delay and reliability, thereby ensuring data security. Importantly, the proposed system is compatible with current mobile networks and demonstrates practical applicability.

Workload Distribution with Rateless Encoding: A Low-Latency Computation Offloading Method within Edge Networks

This paper introduces REDC, a comprehensive strategy for offloading computational tasks within mobile Edge Networks (EN) to Distributed Computing (DC) after Rateless Encoding (RE). Despite the efficiency, reliability, and scalability advantages of distributed computing in ENs, straggler-induced latencies and failures pose significant challenges. Coded distributed computing has gained attention for its efficient redundancy computing, alleviating the impact of stragglers. Yet, current research predominantly focuses on tolerating a predefined number of stragglers with minimal encoding redundancy. Furthermore, nodes within edge networks are characterized by their inherent heterogeneity in computation, communication, and storage capacities, and unpredictable straggler effects and failures. To our knowledge, existing encoding offloading approaches lack a systematic design and unified consideration of these characteristics. REDC addresses these issues by adaptively encoding tasks, then distributing the workload based on node variations. In the face of unpredictability failures, the rateless encoding adaptation provides resilience to dynamic straggler effects. Considering the node heterogeneity and system status, tasks are offloaded to optimal subset "valid" nodes. Load distribution decisions are made based on updates to queuing theory modeling through state feedback. The REDC framework is applicable to EN by improving resource utilization and reducing task sequence execution delays. Experimental results demonstrate our method's effectiveness and resilient performance, maintaining efficacy even in the presence of unstable nodes.

Information-Directed Selection for Top-Two Algorithms

We consider the best-k-arm identification problem for multi-armed bandits, where the objective is to select the exact set of k arms with the highest mean rewards by sequentially allocating measurement effort. We characterize the necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimal allocation using dual variables. Remarkably these optimality conditions lead to the extension of top-two algorithm design principle (Russo, 2020), initially proposed for best-arm identification. Furthermore, our optimality conditions induce a simple and effective selection rule dubbed information-directed selection (IDS) that selects one of the top-two candidates based on a measure of information gain. As a theoretical guarantee, we prove that integrated with IDS, top-two Thompson sampling is (asymptotically) optimal for Gaussian best-arm identification, solving a glaring open problem in the pure exploration literature (Russo, 2020). As a by-product, we show that for k > 1, top-two algorithms cannot achieve optimality even when the algorithm has access to the unknown "optimal" tuning parameter. Numerical experiments show the superior performance of the proposed top-two algorithms with IDS and considerable improvement compared with algorithms without adaptive selection.

The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE) mission: An overview

The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE), dubbed "Xihe" - Goddess of the Sun, was launched on October 14, 2021 as the first solar space mission of China National Space Administration (CNSA). The CHASE mission is designed to test a newly developed satellite platform and to acquire the spectroscopic observations in the Hα waveband. The Hα Imaging Spectrograph (HIS) is the scientific payload of the CHASE satellite. It consists of two observational modes: raster scanning mode and continuum imaging mode. The raster scanning mode obtains full-Sun or region-of-interest spectral images from 6559.7 to 6565.9 Å and from 6567.8 to 6570.6 Å with 0.024 Å pixel spectral resolution and 1 minute temporal resolution. The continuum imaging mode obtains photospheric images in continuum around 6689 Å with the full width at half maximum of 13.4 Å. The CHASE mission will advance our understanding of the dynamics of solar activity in the photosphere and chromosphere. In this paper, we present an overview of the CHASE mission including the scientific objectives, HIS instrument overview, data calibration flow, and first results of on-orbit observations.

Calibration procedures for the CHASE/HIS science data

The Hα line is an important optical line in solar observations containing the information from the photosphere to the chromosphere. To study the mechanisms of solar eruptions and the plasma dynamics in the lower atmosphere, the Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE) was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit on October 14, 2021. The scientific payload of the CHASE satellite is the Hα Imaging Spectrograph (HIS). The CHASE/HIS acquires, for the first time, seeing-free Hα spectroscopic observations with high spectral and temporal resolutions. It consists of two observational modes. The raster scanning mode provides full-Sun or region-of-interest spectra at Hα (6559.7-6565.9 Å) and Fe I (6567.8-6570.6 Å) wavebands. The continuum imaging mode obtains full-Sun photospheric images at around 6689 Å. In this paper, we present detailed calibration procedures for the CHASE/HIS science data, including the dark-field and flat-field correction, slit image curvature correction, wavelength and intensity calibration, and coordinate transformation. The higher-level data products can be directly used for scientific research.

Common high-performance semiconducting polymers are not amorphous but semi-para-crystalline

Precise determination of the solid-state microstructure of semiconducting polymers is of paramount importance for the further development of these materials in various organic electronic technologies. Yet, prior characterization of the ordering of semiconducting polymers often resulted in conundrums in which X-ray scattering and microscopy yielded seemingly contradicting results. Here, based on fast scanning calorimetry, we introduce for the first time the concept of the semi-para-crystallinity and measurement of the degree of para-crystallinity (ordered volume/mass fraction) in a set of materials that previously eluded understanding. In combination with lattice distortion determination within para-crystals (g-parameter from X-ray scattering) and nanomorphology, the complete solid-state microstructure is correlated with device properties. Our data show that the long-range charge carrier transport in these materials is more sensitive to the interconnection of para-crystal units than to the amount of structural order itself.

Who Are the Phishers? Phishing Scam Detection on Ethereum via Network Embedding

Recently, blockchain technology has become a topic in the spotlight but also a hotbed of various cybercrimes. Among them, phishing scams on blockchain have been found making a notable amount of money, thus emerging as a serious threat to the trading security of the blockchain ecosystem. In order to create a favorable environment for investment, an effective method for detecting phishing scams is urgently needed in the blockchain ecosystem. To this end, this paper proposes an approach to detect phishing scams on Ethereum by mining its transaction records. Specifically, we first crawl the labeled phishing addresses from two authorized websites and reconstruct the transaction network according to the collected transaction records. Then, by taking the transaction amount and timestamp into consideration, we propose a novel network embedding algorithm called trans2vec to extract the features of the addresses for subsequent phishing identification. Finally, we adopt the oneclass support vector machine (SVM) to classify the nodes into normal and phishing ones. Experimental results demonstrate that the phishing detection method works effectively on Ethereum, and indicate the efficacy of trans2vec over existing state-of-the-art algorithms on feature extraction for transaction networks. This work is the first investigation on phishing detection on Ethereum via network embedding and provides insights into how features of large-scale transaction networks can be embedded.

Angle-dependent magnetoresistance and its implications for Lifshitz transition in W2As3

Lifshitz transition represents a sudden reconstruction of Fermi surface structure, giving rise to anomalies in electronic properties of materials. Such a transition does not necessarily rely on symmetry-breaking and thus is topological. It holds a key to understand the origin of many exotic quantum phenomena, for example the mechanism of extremely large magnetoresistance (MR) in topological Dirac/Weyl semimetals. Here, we report studies of the angle-dependent MR (ADMR) and the thermoelectric effect in W2As3 single crystal. The compound shows a large unsaturated MR (of about 70000% at 4.2 K and 53 T). The most striking finding is that the ADMR significantly deforms from the horizontal dumbbell-like shape above 40 K to the vertical lotus-like pattern below 30 K. The window of 30-40 K also corresponds substantial changes in Hall effect, thermopower and Nernst coefficient, implying an abrupt change of Fermi surface topology. Such a temperature-induced Lifshitz transition results in a compensation of electron-hole transport and the large MR as well. We thus suggest that the similar method can be applicable in detecting a Fermi-surface change of a variety of quantum states when a direct Fermi-surface measurement is not possible.

A Robust Queueing Network Analyzer Based on Indices of Dispersion

We develop a robust queueing network analyzer algorithm to approximate the steady-state performance of a single-class open queueing network of single-server queues with Markovian routing. The algorithm allows non-renewal external arrival processes, general service-time distributions and customer feedback. We focus on the customer flows, defined as the continuous-time processes counting customers flowing into or out of the network, or flowing from one queue to another. Each flow is partially characterized by its rate and a continuous function that measures the stochastic variability over time. This function is a scaled version of the variance-time curve, called the index of dispersion for counts (IDC). The required IDC functions for the flows can be calculated from the model primitives, estimated from data or approximated by solving a set of linear equations. A robust queueing technique is used to generate approximations of the mean steady-state performance at each queue from the IDC of the total arrival flow and the service specification at that queue. The algorithm effectiveness is supported by extensive simulation studies and heavy-traffic limits.

Superconductivity, Electronic Phase Diagram and Pressure Effect in Sr_{1-x}Pr_{x}FBiS_{2}

Based on a combination of X-ray diffraction, electrical transports, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and pressure effect measurements, we report a series of BiS$_{2}$-based Sr$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$FBiS$_{2}$ superconductors with the maximum $T_c$ of 2.7 K for $x =$ 0.5 at ambient pressure. Superconductivity can be only observed at 0.4 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7 while the normal state resistivity shows the semiconducting-like behaviors. $χ(T)$ displays the low superconducting shielding volume fractions and $C(T)$ does not exhibit distinguishable anomaly around $T_c$, suggesting a filamentary superconductivity in the Pr-doped polycrystalline samples. By varying doping concentrations, an electrnoic phase diagram can thus be established. Upon applying pressure on the optimal doping Sr$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$FBiS$_{2}$ system, $T_c$ is abruptly enhanced, reaches 8.5 K at a critical pressure of $P_c =$ 1.5 GPa and remains a slight increase up to 9.7 K up to 2.5 GPa. Accompanied with the enhancement of superconductivity from the low-$T_c$ phase to the high-$T_c$ phase, the normal state undergoes a semiconductor-to-metal transition under pressure. The scenario can be linked to the enhancement of orbital overlap of Bi-6p and S-p, contributing to the bulk superconductivity above $P_c$. Phase diagram for Sr$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$FBiS$_{2}$ is also obtained.

Giant anomalous Nernst effect in the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

In ferromagnetic solids, even in absence of magnetic field, a transverse voltage can be generated by a longitudinal temperature gradient. This thermoelectric counterpart of the Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is dubbed the Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). Expected to scale with spontaneous magnetization, both these effects arise because of the Berry curvature at the Fermi energy. Here, we report the observation of a giant ANE in a newly-discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ crystal. Hall resistivity and Nernst signal both show sharp jumps at a threshold field and exhibit a clear hysteresis loop below the ferromagnetic transition temperature. The ANE signal peaks a maximum value of about 5 miuV/K which is comparable to the largest seen in any magnetic material. Moreover, the anomalous transverse thermoelectric conductivity becomes as large as about 10 A/K.m at 70 K, the largest in known semimetals. The observed ANE signal is much larger than what is expected according to the magnetization.

Tunable Semiconductors: Control over Carrier States and Excitations in Layered Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskites

For a class of 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite semiconductors based on $π$-conjugated organic cations, we predict quantitatively how varying the organic and inorganic component allows control over the nature, energy and localization of carrier states in a quantum-well-like fashion. Our first-principles predictions, based on large-scale hybrid density-functional theory with spin-orbit coupling, show that the interface between the organic and inorganic parts within a single hybrid can be modulated systematically, enabling us to select between different type-I and type-II energy level alignments. Energy levels, recombination properties and transport behavior of electrons and holes thus become tunable by choosing specific organic functionalizations and juxtaposing them with suitable inorganic components.

Magnetoresistance and robust resistivity plateau in MoAs2

We have grown the MoAs$_2$ single crystal which crystallizes in a monoclinic structure with C2/m space group. Transport measurements show that MoAs$_2$ displays a metallic behavior at zero field and undergoes a metal-to-semiconductor crossover at low temperatures when the applied magnetic field is over 5 T. A robust resistivity plateau appears below 18 K and persists for the field up to 9 T. A large positive magnetoresistance (MR), reaching about 2600\% at 2 K and 9 T, is observed when the field is perpendicular to the current. The MR becomes negative below 40 K when the field is rotated to be parallel to the current. The Hall resistivity shows the non-linear field-dependence below 70 K. The analysis using two-band model indicates a compensated electron-hole carrier density at low temperatures. A combination of the breakdown of Kohler's rule, the abnormal drop and the cross point in Hall data implies that a possible Lifshitz transition has occurred between 30 K and 60 K, likely driving the compensated electron-hole density, the large MR as well as the metal-semiconductor transition in MoAs$_2$. Our results indicate that the family of centrosymmetric transition-metal dipnictides has rich transport behavior which can in general exhibit variable metallic and topological features.
