Dirac-Surface-State Modulated Spin Dynamics in a Ferrimagnetic Insulator at Room Temperature

This work demonstrates dramatically modified spin dynamics of magnetic insulator (MI) by the spin-momentum locked Dirac surface states of the adjacent topological insulator (TI) which can be harnessed for spintronic applications. As the Bi-concentration x is systematically tuned in 5 nm thick (BixSb1-x)2Te3 TI film, the weight of the surface relative to bulk states peaks at x = 0.32 when the chemical potential approaches the Dirac point. At this concentration, the Gilbert damping constant of the precessing magnetization in 10 nm thick Y3Fe5O12 MI film in the MI/TI heterostructures is enhanced by an order of magnitude, the largest among all concentrations. In addition, the MI acquires additional strong magnetic anisotropy that favors the in-plane orientation with similar Bi-concentration dependence. These extraordinary effects of the Dirac surface states distinguish TI from other materials such as heavy metals in modulating spin dynamics of the neighboring magnetic layer.

Multi-view Common Component Discriminant Analysis for Cross-view Classification

Cross-view classification that means to classify samples from heterogeneous views is a significant yet challenging problem in computer vision. A promising approach to handle this problem is the multi-view subspace learning (MvSL), which intends to find a common subspace for multi-view data. Despite the satisfactory results achieved by existing methods, the performance of previous work will be dramatically degraded when multi-view data lies on nonlinear manifolds. To circumvent this drawback, we propose Multi-view Common Component Discriminant Analysis (MvCCDA) to handle view discrepancy, discriminability and nonlinearity in a joint manner. Specifically, our MvCCDA incorporates supervised information and local geometric information into the common component extraction process to learn a discriminant common subspace and to discover the nonlinear structure embedded in multi-view data. We develop a kernel method of MvCCDA to further boost the performance of MvCCDA. Beyond kernel extension, optimization and complexity analysis of MvCCDA are also presented for completeness. Our MvCCDA is competitive with the state-of-the-art MvSL based methods on four benchmark datasets, demonstrating its superiority.

Experimental Signatures of Spin Superfluid Ground State in Canted Antiferromagnet Cr2O3 via Nonlocal Spin Transport

Spin superfluid is a novel emerging quantum matter arising from the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of spin-1 bosons. We demonstrate the spin superfluid ground state in canted antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 thin film at low temperatures via nonlocal spin transport. A large enhancement of the nonlocal spin signal is observed below ~ 20 K, and it saturates from ~ 5 K down to 2 K. We show that the spins can propagate over very long distances (~ 20 micro meters) in such spin superfluid ground state and the nonlocal spin signal decreases very slowly as the spacing increases with an inverse relationship, which is consistent with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, spin superfluidity has been investigated in the canted antiferromagnetic phase of the (11-20)-oriented Cr2O3 film, where the magnetic field dependence of the associated critical temperature follows a two-thirds power law near the critical point. The experimental demonstration of the spin superfluid ground state in canted antiferromagnet will be extremely important for the fundamental physics on the BEC of spin-1 bosons and paves the way for future spin supercurrent devices, such as spin-Josephson junctions.

Role of La doping for Topological Hall Effect in Epitaxial EuO Films

We report the critical role of La doping in the topological Hall effect observed in LaxEu1-xO thin films (~ 50 nm) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. When the La doping exceeds 0.036, topological Hall effect emerges, which we attribute to the formation of magnetic skyrmions. Besides, the La doping is found to play a critical role in determining the phases, densities, and sizes of the skyrmions in the LaxEu1-xO thin films. The maximum region of the skyrmion phase diagram is observed on the La0.1Eu0.9O thin film. As the La doping increases, the skyrmion density increases while the skyrmion size decreases. Our findings demonstrate the important role of La doping for the skyrmions in EuO films, which could be important for future studies of magnetic skyrmions in Heisenberg ferromagnets.

Wigner-Type Theorem on transition probability preserving maps in semifinite factors

The Wigner's theorem, which is one of the cornerstones of the mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics, asserts that every symmetry of quantum system is unitary or anti-unitary. This classical result was first given by Wigner in 1931. Thereafter it has been proved and generalized in various ways by many authors. Recently, G. P. Gehér extended Wigner's and Molnár's theorems and characterized the transformations on the Grassmann space of all rank-$n$ projections which preserve the transition probability. The aim of this paper is to provide a new approach to describe the general form of the transition probability preserving (not necessarily bijective) maps between Grassmann spaces. As a byproduct, we are able to generalize the results of Molnár and G. P. Gehér.

Realization of rigid C$^*$-tensor categories via Tomita bimodules

Starting from a (small) rigid C$^*$-tensor category $\mathscr{C}$ with simple unit, we construct von Neumann algebras associated to each of its objects. These algebras are factors and can be either semifinite (of type II$_1$ or II$_\infty$, depending on whether the spectrum of the category is finite or infinite) or they can be of type III$_λ$, $λ\in (0,1]$. The choice of type is tuned by the choice of Tomita structure (defined in the paper) on certain bimodules we use in the construction. Moreover, if the spectrum is infinite we realize the whole tensor category directly as endomorphisms of these algebras, with finite Jones index, by exhibiting a fully faithful unitary tensor functor $F:\mathscr{C} \hookrightarrow End_0(Φ)$ where $Φ$ is a factor (of type II or III). The construction relies on methods from free probability (full Fock space, amalgamated free products), it does not depend on amenability assumptions, and it can be applied to categories with uncountable spectrum (hence it provides an alternative answer to a conjecture of Yamagami \cite{Y3}). Even in the case of uncountably generated categories, we can refine the previous equivalence to obtain realizations on $σ$-finite factors as endomorphisms (in the type III case) and as bimodules (in the type II case). In the case of trivial Tomita structure, we recover the same algebra obtained in \cite{PopaS} and \cite{AMD}, namely the (countably generated) free group factor $L(F_\infty)$ if the given category has denumerable spectrum, while we get the free group factor with uncountably many generators if the spectrum is infinite and non-denumerable.

The Role of Oxygen in Ionic Liquid Gating on 2D Cr2Ge2Te6: a Non-Oxide Material

Ionic liquid gating can markedly modulate the materials' carrier density so as to induce metallization, superconductivity, and quantum phase transitions. One of the main issues is whether the mechanism of ionic liquid gating is an electrostatic field effect or an electrochemical effect, especially for oxide materials. Recent observation of the suppression of the ionic liquid gate-induced metallization in the presence of oxygen for oxide materials suggests the electrochemical effect. However, in more general scenarios, the role of oxygen in ionic liquid gating effect is still unclear. Here, we perform the ionic liquid gating experiments on a non-oxide material: two-dimensional ferromagnetic Cr2Ge2Te6. Our results demonstrate that despite the large increase of the gate leakage current in the presence of oxygen, the oxygen does not affect the ionic liquid gating effect (< 5 % difference), which suggests the electrostatic field effect as the mechanism on non-oxide materials. Moreover, our results show that the ionic liquid gating is more effective on the modulation of the channel resistances compared to the back gating across the 300 nm thick SiO2.

Observation of long phase-coherence length in epitaxial La-doped CdO thin films

The search for long electron phase coherence length, which is the length that an electron can keep its quantum wave-like properties, has attracted considerable interest in the last several decades. Here, we report the long phase coherence length of ~ 3.7 micro meters in La-doped CdO thin films at 2 K. Systematical investigations of the La doping and the temperature dependences of the electron mobility and the electron phase coherence length reveal contrasting scattering mechanisms for these two physical properties. Furthermore, these results show that the oxygen vacancies could be the dominant scatters in CdO thin films that break the electron phase coherence, which would shed light on further investigation of phase coherence properties in oxide materials.

Conformally variational Riemannian invariants

Conformally variational Riemannian invariants (CVIs), such as the scalar curvature, are homogeneous scalar invariants which arise as the gradient of a Riemannian functional. We establish a wide range of stability and rigidity results involving CVIs, generalizing many such results for the scalar curvature.

Electric Field Effect in Multilayer Cr2Ge2Te6: a Ferromagnetic Two-Dimensional Material

The emergence of two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted a great deal of attention due to their fascinating physical properties and potential applications for future nanoelectronic devices. Since the first isolation of graphene, a Dirac material, a large family of new functional 2D materials have been discovered and characterized, including insulating 2D boron nitride, semiconducting 2D transition metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus, and superconducting 2D bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide, molybdenum disulphide and niobium selenide, etc. Here, we report the identification of ferromagnetic thin flakes of Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT) with thickness down to a few nanometers, which provides a very important piece to the van der Waals structures consisting of various 2D materials. We further demonstrate the giant modulation of the channel resistance of 2D CGT devices via electric field effect. Our results illustrate the gate voltage tunability of 2D CGT and the potential of CGT, a ferromagnetic 2D material, as a new functional quantum material for applications in future nanoelectronics and spintronics.

A sphere theorem for Bach-flat manifolds with positive constant scalar curvature

We show a closed Bach-flat Riemannian manifold with a fixed positive constant scalar curvature has to be locally spherical if its Weyl and traceless Ricci tensors are small in the sense of either $L^\infty$ or $L^{\frac{n}{2}}$-norm. Compared with the complete non-compact case done by Kim, we apply a different method to achieve these results. These results generalize a rigidity theorem of positive Einstein manifolds due to M.-A.Singer. As an application, we can partially recover the well-known Chang-Gursky-Yang's $4$-dimensional conformal sphere theorem.

Energy-Aware Disk Storage Management: Online Approach with Application in DBMS

Energy consumption has become a first-class optimization goal in design and implementation of data-intensive computing systems. This is particularly true in the design of database management systems (DBMS), which was found to be the major consumer of energy in the software stack of modern data centers. Among all database components, the storage system is one of the most power-hungry elements. In previous work, dynamic power management (DPM) techniques that make real-time decisions to transition the disks to low-power modes are normally used to save energy in storage systems. In this paper, we tackle the limitations of DPM proposals in previous contributions. We introduced a DPM optimization model integrated with model predictive control (MPC) strategy to minimize power consumption of the disk-based storage system while satisfying given performance requirements. It dynamically determines the state of disks and plans for inter-disk data fragment migration to achieve desirable balance between power consumption and query response time. Via analyzing our optimization model to identify structural properties of optimal solutions, we propose a fast-solution heuristic DPM algorithm that can be integrated in large-scale disk storage systems for efficient state configuration and data migration. We evaluate our proposed ideas by running simulations using extensive set of synthetic workloads based on popular TPC benchmarks. Our results show that our solution significantly outperforms the best existing algorithm in both energy savings and response time.

Observation of Inverse Edelstein Effect in Rashba-Split 2DEG between SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 at Room Temperature

The Rashba physics has been intensively studied in the field of spin orbitronics, for the purpose of searching novel physical properties and the FM magnetization switching for technology applications. Here, we report the observation of the inverse Edelstein effect up to room temperature in the Rashba-split 2DEG between two insulating oxides SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 with the LaAlO3 layer thickness from 3 to 40 unit cells (UC). We further demonstrate that the spin voltage could be dramatically manipulated by electric field effect for the 2DEG between SrTiO3 and 3 UC LaAlO3. These results demonstrate that the Rashba-split 2DEG at the complex oxide interface can be used for room temperature efficient charge-and-spin conversion for the generation and detection of spin current.

Spin Injection and Inverse Edelstein Effect in the Surface States of Topological Kondo Insulator SmB6

There has been considerable interest in exploiting the spin degrees of freedom of electrons for potential information storage and computing technologies. Topological insulators (TI), a class of quantum materials, have special gapless edge/surface states, where the spin polarization of the Dirac fermions is locked to the momentum direction. This spin-momentum locking property gives rise to very interesting spin-dependent physical phenomena such as the Edelstein and inverse Edelstein effects. However, the spin injection in pure surface states of TI is very challenging because of the coexistence of the highly conducting bulk states. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the spin injection and observe the inverse Edelstein effect in the surface states of a topological Kondo insulator, SmB6. At low temperatures when only surface carriers are present, a clear spin signal is observed. Furthermore, the magnetic field angle dependence of the spin signal is consistent with spin-momentum locking property of surface states of SmB6.

Positive Exchange Bias between Permalloy and Twined (10-10)-Cr2O3 Films

We report the discovery of a positive exchange bias between Ni80Fe20 (Py) and twined (10-10)-Cr2O3 film near its blocking temperature (TB) when it is cooled in an in-plane magnetic field applied along 45 degrees from the two spin configurations of the Cr atoms. This is an abnormal behavior compared to the negative exchange bias at all temperatures below TB when the cooling and measuring magnetic fields are applied along one of the two spin configurations of the Cr atoms. We speculate these results could be related to the exchange interactions between the twined structure of the (10-10)-Cr2O3 film epitaxially grown on the rutile (001)-TiO2 substrate.

Crystal Structure Manipulation of the Exchange Bias in an Antiferromagnetic Film

Exchange bias is one of the most extensively studied phenomena in magnetism, since it exerts a unidirectional anisotropy to a ferromagnet (FM) when coupled to an antiferromagnet (AFM) and the control of the exchange bias is therefore very important for technological applications, such as magnetic random access memory and giant magnetoresistance sensors. In this letter, we report the crystal structure manipulation of the exchange bias in epitaxial hcp Cr2O3 films. By epitaxially growing twined (10-10) oriented Cr2O3 thin films, of which the c axis and spins of the Cr atoms lie in the film plane, we demonstrate that the exchange bias between Cr2O3 and an adjacent permalloy layer is tuned to in-plane from out-of-plane that has been observed in (0001) oriented Cr2O3 films. This is owing to the collinear exchange coupling between the spins of the Cr atoms and the adjacent FM layer. Such a highly anisotropic exchange bias phenomenon is not possible in polycrystalline films.

Experimental Investigation of Temperature-Dependent Gilbert Damping in Permalloy Thin Films

The Gilbert damping of ferromagnetic materials is arguably the most important but least understood phenomenological parameter that dictates real-time magnetization dynamics. Understanding the physical origin of the Gilbert damping is highly relevant to developing future fast switching spintronics devices such as magnetic sensors and magnetic random access memory. Here, we report an experimental study of temperature-dependent Gilbert damping in permalloy (Py) thin films of varying thicknesses by ferromagnetic resonance. From the thickness dependence, two independent contributions to the Gilbert damping are identified, namely bulk damping and surface damping. Of particular interest, bulk damping decreases monotonically as the temperature decreases, while surface damping shows an enhancement peak at the temperature of ~50 K. These results provide an important insight to the physical origin of the Gilbert damping in ultrathin magnetic films.

A symmetric 2-tensor canonically associated to Q-curvature and its applications

In this article, we define a symmetric 2-tensor canonically associated to Q-curvature called J-tensor on any Riemannian manifold with dimension at least three. The relation between J-tensor and Q-curvature is precisely like Ricci tensor and scalar curvature. Thus it can be interpreted as a higher-order analogue of Ricci tensor. This tensor can also be used to understand Chang-Gursky-Yang's theorem on 4-dimensional Q-singular metrics. Moreover, we show an Almost-Schur Lemma holds for Q-curvature, which gives an estimate of Q-curvature on closed manifolds.
