Development of a Comprehensive Physics-Based Battery Model and Its Multidimensional Comparison with an Equivalent-Circuit Model: Accuracy, Complexity, and Real-World Performance under Varying Conditions

This paper develops a comprehensive physics-based model (PBM) that spans a wide operational range, including varying temperatures, charge/discharge conditions, and real-world field data cycles. The PBM incorporates key factors such as hysteresis effects, concentration-dependent diffusivity, and the Arrhenius law to provide a realistic depiction of battery behavior. Additionally, the paper presents an in-depth analysis comparing the PBM with an equivalent-circuit model (ECM) for accurately capturing the dynamics of lithium-ion batteries under diverse operating conditions. To ensure a fair comparison, both the PBM and ECM are rigorously calibrated and validated through parameter identification and testing across 55 different operating conditions. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this represents the most comprehensive model calibration and validation effort for PBM and ECM in the literature to date, encompassing large temperature variations (-20 to 40°C), various charging/discharging C-rates, and real-world driving cycles. Comparative analysis between the PBM and ECM highlights key differences in accuracy, computational complexity, parameterization requirements, and performance under varying temperature conditions. appropriate models for battery management applications.

Towards Explainable Evaluation Metrics for Machine Translation

Unlike classical lexical overlap metrics such as BLEU, most current evaluation metrics for machine translation (for example, COMET or BERTScore) are based on black-box large language models. They often achieve strong correlations with human judgments, but recent research indicates that the lower-quality classical metrics remain dominant, one of the potential reasons being that their decision processes are more transparent. To foster more widespread acceptance of novel high-quality metrics, explainability thus becomes crucial. In this concept paper, we identify key properties as well as key goals of explainable machine translation metrics and provide a comprehensive synthesis of recent techniques, relating them to our established goals and properties. In this context, we also discuss the latest state-of-the-art approaches to explainable metrics based on generative models such as ChatGPT and GPT4. Finally, we contribute a vision of next-generation approaches, including natural language explanations. We hope that our work can help catalyze and guide future research on explainable evaluation metrics and, mediately, also contribute to better and more transparent machine translation systems.

RSHazeDiff: A Unified Fourier-aware Diffusion Model for Remote Sensing Image Dehazing

Haze severely degrades the visual quality of remote sensing images and hampers the performance of road extraction, vehicle detection, and traffic flow monitoring. The emerging denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) exhibits the significant potential for dense haze removal with its strong generation ability. Since remote sensing images contain extensive small-scale texture structures, it is important to effectively restore image details from hazy images. However, current wisdom of DDPM fails to preserve image details and color fidelity well, limiting its dehazing capacity for remote sensing images. In this paper, we propose a novel unified Fourier-aware diffusion model for remote sensing image dehazing, termed RSHazeDiff. From a new perspective, RSHazeDiff explores the conditional DDPM to improve image quality in dense hazy scenarios, and it makes three key contributions. First, RSHazeDiff refines the training phase of diffusion process by performing noise estimation and reconstruction constraints in a coarse-to-fine fashion. Thus, it remedies the unpleasing results caused by the simple noise estimation constraint in DDPM. Second, by taking the frequency information as important prior knowledge during iterative sampling steps, RSHazeDiff can preserve more texture details and color fidelity in dehazed images. Third, we design a global compensated learning module to utilize the Fourier transform to capture the global dependency features of input images, which can effectively mitigate the effects of boundary artifacts when processing fixed-size patches. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world benchmarks validate the favorable performance of RSHazeDiff over state-of-the-art methods. Source code will be released at https://github.com/jm-xiong/RSHazeDiff.

PointCG: Self-supervised Point Cloud Learning via Joint Completion and Generation

The core of self-supervised point cloud learning lies in setting up appropriate pretext tasks, to construct a pre-training framework that enables the encoder to perceive 3D objects effectively. In this paper, we integrate two prevalent methods, masked point modeling (MPM) and 3D-to-2D generation, as pretext tasks within a pre-training framework. We leverage the spatial awareness and precise supervision offered by these two methods to address their respective limitations: ambiguous supervision signals and insensitivity to geometric information. Specifically, the proposed framework, abbreviated as PointCG, consists of a Hidden Point Completion (HPC) module and an Arbitrary-view Image Generation (AIG) module. We first capture visible points from arbitrary views as inputs by removing hidden points. Then, HPC extracts representations of the inputs with an encoder and completes the entire shape with a decoder, while AIG is used to generate rendered images based on the visible points' representations. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the baselines in various downstream tasks. Our code will be made available upon acceptance.

TopoTxR: A topology-guided deep convolutional network for breast parenchyma learning on DCE-MRIs

Characterization of breast parenchyma in dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is a challenging task owing to the complexity of underlying tissue structures. Existing quantitative approaches, like radiomics and deep learning models, lack explicit quantification of intricate and subtle parenchymal structures, including fibroglandular tissue. To address this, we propose a novel topological approach that explicitly extracts multi-scale topological structures to better approximate breast parenchymal structures, and then incorporates these structures into a deep-learning-based prediction model via an attention mechanism. Our topology-informed deep learning model, \emph{TopoTxR}, leverages topology to provide enhanced insights into tissues critical for disease pathophysiology and treatment response. We empirically validate \emph{TopoTxR} using the VICTRE phantom breast dataset, showing that the topological structures extracted by our model effectively approximate the breast parenchymal structures. We further demonstrate \emph{TopoTxR}'s efficacy in predicting response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Our qualitative and quantitative analyses suggest differential topological behavior of breast tissue in treatment-naïve imaging, in patients who respond favorably to therapy as achieving pathological complete response (pCR) versus those who do not. In a comparative analysis with several baselines on the publicly available I-SPY 1 dataset (N=161, including 47 patients with pCR and 114 without) and the Rutgers proprietary dataset (N=120, with 69 patients achieving pCR and 51 not), \emph{TopoTxR} demonstrates a notable improvement, achieving a 2.6\% increase in accuracy and a 4.6\% enhancement in AUC compared to the state-of-the-art method.

Sensor2Text: Enabling Natural Language Interactions for Daily Activity Tracking Using Wearable Sensors

Visual Question-Answering, a technology that generates textual responses from an image and natural language question, has progressed significantly. Notably, it can aid in tracking and inquiring about daily activities, crucial in healthcare monitoring, especially for elderly patients or those with memory disabilities. However, video poses privacy concerns and has a limited field of view. This paper presents Sensor2Text, a model proficient in tracking daily activities and engaging in conversations using wearable sensors. The approach outlined here tackles several challenges, including low information density in wearable sensor data, insufficiency of single wearable sensors in human activities recognition, and model's limited capacity for Question-Answering and interactive conversations. To resolve these obstacles, transfer learning and student-teacher networks are utilized to leverage knowledge from visual-language models. Additionally, an encoder-decoder neural network model is devised to jointly process language and sensor data for conversational purposes. Furthermore, Large Language Models are also utilized to enable interactive capabilities. The model showcases the ability to identify human activities and engage in Q\&A dialogues using various wearable sensor modalities. It performs comparably to or better than existing visual-language models in both captioning and conversational tasks. To our knowledge, this represents the first model capable of conversing about wearable sensor data, offering an innovative approach to daily activity tracking that addresses privacy and field-of-view limitations associated with current vision-based solutions.

SR-Stereo & DAPE: Stepwise Regression and Pre-trained Edges for Practical Stereo Matching

Due to the difficulty in obtaining real samples and ground truth, the generalization performance and domain adaptation performance are critical for the feasibility of stereo matching methods in practical applications. However, there are significant distributional discrepancies among different domains, which pose challenges for generalization and domain adaptation of the model. Inspired by the iteration-based methods, we propose a novel stepwise regression architecture. This architecture regresses the disparity error through multiple range-controlled clips, which effectively overcomes domain discrepancies. We implement this architecture based on the iterative-based methods, and refer to this new stereo method as SR-Stereo. Specifically, a new stepwise regression unit is proposed to replace the original update unit in order to control the range of output. Meanwhile, a regression objective segment is proposed to set the supervision individually for each stepwise regression unit. In addition, to enhance the edge awareness of models adapting new domains with sparse ground truth, we propose Domain Adaptation based on Pre-trained Edges (DAPE). In DAPE, a pre-trained stereo model and an edge estimator are used to estimate the edge maps of the target domain images, which along with the sparse ground truth disparity are used to fine-tune the stereo model. The proposed SR-Stereo and DAPE are extensively evaluated on SceneFlow, KITTI, Middbury 2014 and ETH3D. Compared with the SOTA methods and generalized methods, the proposed SR-Stereo achieves competitive in-domain and cross-domain performances. Meanwhile, the proposed DAPE significantly improves the performance of the fine-tuned model, especially in the texture-less and detailed regions.

Dynamic Evidence Decoupling for Trusted Multi-view Learning

Multi-view learning methods often focus on improving decision accuracy, while neglecting the decision uncertainty, limiting their suitability for safety-critical applications. To mitigate this, researchers propose trusted multi-view learning methods that estimate classification probabilities and uncertainty by learning the class distributions for each instance. However, these methods assume that the data from each view can effectively differentiate all categories, ignoring the semantic vagueness phenomenon in real-world multi-view data. Our findings demonstrate that this phenomenon significantly suppresses the learning of view-specific evidence in existing methods. We propose a Consistent and Complementary-aware trusted Multi-view Learning (CCML) method to solve this problem. We first construct view opinions using evidential deep neural networks, which consist of belief mass vectors and uncertainty estimates. Next, we dynamically decouple the consistent and complementary evidence. The consistent evidence is derived from the shared portions across all views, while the complementary evidence is obtained by averaging the differing portions across all views. We ensure that the opinion constructed from the consistent evidence strictly aligns with the ground-truth category. For the opinion constructed from the complementary evidence, we allow it for potential vagueness in the evidence. We compare CCML with state-of-the-art baselines on one synthetic and six real-world datasets. The results validate the effectiveness of the dynamic evidence decoupling strategy and show that CCML significantly outperforms baselines on accuracy and reliability. The code is released at https://github.com/Lihong-Liu/CCML.

3D-CT-GPT: Generating 3D Radiology Reports through Integration of Large Vision-Language Models

Medical image analysis is crucial in modern radiological diagnostics, especially given the exponential growth in medical imaging data. The demand for automated report generation systems has become increasingly urgent. While prior research has mainly focused on using machine learning and multimodal language models for 2D medical images, the generation of reports for 3D medical images has been less explored due to data scarcity and computational complexities. This paper introduces 3D-CT-GPT, a Visual Question Answering (VQA)-based medical visual language model specifically designed for generating radiology reports from 3D CT scans, particularly chest CTs. Extensive experiments on both public and private datasets demonstrate that 3D-CT-GPT significantly outperforms existing methods in terms of report accuracy and quality. Although current methods are few, including the partially open-source CT2Rep and the open-source M3D, we ensured fair comparison through appropriate data conversion and evaluation methodologies. Experimental results indicate that 3D-CT-GPT enhances diagnostic accuracy and report coherence, establishing itself as a robust solution for clinical radiology report generation. Future work will focus on expanding the dataset and further optimizing the model to enhance its performance and applicability.

Sound Wave Manipulation Based on Valley Acoustic Interferometers

Topological acoustics provides new opportunities for materials with unprecedented functions. In this work, we report a design of topological valley acoustic interferometers by Y-shaped valley sonic crystals. By tight-bounding calculation and experimental demonstration, we successfully tune the acoustic energy partition rate by configuring the channel. An analytical theory proposed to explain the transmission property matches well with experimental observations. An additional π Berry phase is verified to accumulate circling along the shape-independent topological valley acoustic interferometer, unique in the pseudospin half systems. Based on the spectral oscillation originating from the accumulated dynamic phase and π Berry phase, a simplified method to measure acoustic valley interface dispersion is explored, which overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional fast Fourier transform method and improves the measuring efficiency by simply analyzing the peaks and dips of the measured transmission spectrum. Moreover, an effective approach to tuning its transmissions, as well as the spectral line shapes proposed and realized by the local geometry design of the interferometer, exhibits strong tunability under an unchanged physical mechanism. Our work opens an avenue to design future acoustic devices with the function of sound wave manipulation based on the physical mechanism of interference and Berry phase.

A Compact Magnet System for the Tsinghua Tabletop Kibble Balance

Although the so-called magnetic geometrical factor, $Bl$, of a Kibble balance does not appear in the Kibble equations, it offers the precision link between electrical and mechanical quantities and furthers a quasi-quantum traceability path for mass metrology. This feature makes the magnet system, supplying the $Bl$ in Kibble equations, play a core role in Kibble balances. Following the open-hardware idea, we report here on the design, manufacture, assembly, optimization, and finally performance of a compact magnet system for the Tsinghua tabletop Kibble balance. Notably, the magnet system showcased in this study facilitates a straightforward upper levitation of splitting through a streamlined mechanism guide, substantially enhancing the ease of open and close operations. Experimental tests show the realized magnet systems can yield a high $Bl$ value (e.g., 400 Tm for a bifilar coil and 800 Tm for a single coil with a wire gauge of 0.2 mm) meanwhile a low volume/weight (40 kg) thanks to the uniformity improvement of magnetic profiles. Furthermore, important parameters related to systematic effects, such as the current effect, are checked, aiming for a final mass-realization accuracy at the $10^{-8}$ level.

A Bi-polar Current Source with High Short-term Stability for Tsinghua Tabletop Kibble Balance

A high-precision current source, capable of supporting weighing measurements with a relative uncertainty at the $10^{-9}$ level, is essential for Kibble balance experiments. However, most current sources utilized in Kibble balances to date are homemade and not commercially available. In this paper, we introduce a digital-feedback, two-stage current source designed for the Tsinghua tabletop Kibble balance, relying solely on commercially available sources and voltmeters. A high-resolution, small-range current source is employed to digitally compensate for current output fluctuations from a large-range current source. Experimental tests show the proposal can offer an easy realization of a current source with nA/A stability to support Kibble balance measurements.

External Prompt Features Enhanced Parameter-efficient Fine-tuning for Salient Object Detection

Salient object detection (SOD) aims at finding the most salient objects in images and outputs pixel-level binary masks. Transformer-based methods achieve promising performance due to their global semantic understanding, crucial for identifying salient objects. However, these models tend to be large and require numerous training parameters. To better harness the potential of transformers for SOD, we propose a novel parameter-efficient fine-tuning method aimed at reducing the number of training parameters while enhancing the salient object detection capability. Our model, termed EXternal Prompt features Enhanced adapteR Tuning (ExPert), features an encoder-decoder structure with adapters and injectors interspersed between the layers of a frozen transformer encoder. The adapter modules adapt the pretrained backbone to SOD while the injector modules incorporate external prompt features to enhance the awareness of salient objects. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method. Surpassing former state-of-the-art (SOTA) models across five SOD datasets, ExPert achieves 0.215 mean absolute error (MAE) in the ECSSD dataset with 80.2M trained parameters, 21% better than SelfReformer and 47% better than EGNet.

Local Conditional Controlling for Text-to-Image Diffusion Models

Diffusion models have exhibited impressive prowess in the text-to-image task. Recent methods add image-level structure controls, e.g., edge and depth maps, to manipulate the generation process together with text prompts to obtain desired images. This controlling process is globally operated on the entire image, which limits the flexibility of control regions. In this paper, we explore a novel and practical task setting: local control. It focuses on controlling specific local region according to user-defined image conditions, while the remaining regions are only conditioned by the original text prompt. However, it is non-trivial to achieve local conditional controlling. The naive manner of directly adding local conditions may lead to the local control dominance problem, which forces the model to focus on the controlled region and neglect object generation in other regions. To mitigate this problem, we propose Regional Discriminate Loss to update the noised latents, aiming at enhanced object generation in non-control regions. Furthermore, the proposed Focused Token Response suppresses weaker attention scores which lack the strongest response to enhance object distinction and reduce duplication. Lastly, we adopt Feature Mask Constraint to reduce quality degradation in images caused by information differences across the local control region. All proposed strategies are operated at the inference stage. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can synthesize high-quality images aligned with the text prompt under local control conditions.

Rectified Iterative Disparity for Stereo Matching

Both uncertainty-assisted and iteration-based methods have achieved great success in stereo matching. However, existing uncertainty estimation methods take a single image and the corresponding disparity as input, which imposes higher demands on the estimation network. In this paper, we propose Cost volume-based disparity Uncertainty Estimation (UEC). Based on the rich similarity information in the cost volume coming from the image pairs, the proposed UEC can achieve competitive performance with low computational cost. Secondly, we propose two methods of uncertainty-assisted disparity estimation, Uncertainty-based Disparity Rectification (UDR) and Uncertainty-based Disparity update Conditioning (UDC). These two methods optimise the disparity update process of the iterative-based approach without adding extra parameters. In addition, we propose Disparity Rectification loss that significantly improves the accuracy of small amount of disparity updates. We present a high-performance stereo architecture, DR Stereo, which is a combination of the proposed methods. Experimental results from SceneFlow, KITTI, Middlebury 2014, and ETH3D show that DR-Stereo achieves very competitive disparity estimation performance.

CMD: A Cache-assisted GPU Memory Deduplication Architecture

Massive off-chip accesses in GPUs are the main performance bottleneck, and we divided these accesses into three types: (1) Write, (2) Data-Read, and (3) Read-Only. Besides, We find that many writes are duplicate, and the duplication can be inter-dup and intra-dup. While inter-dup means different memory blocks are identical, and intra-dup means all the 4B elements in a line are the same. In this work, we propose a cache-assisted GPU memory deduplication architecture named CMD to reduce the off-chip accesses via utilizing the data duplication in GPU applications. CMD includes three key design contributions which aim to reduce the three kinds of accesses: (1) A novel GPU memory deduplication architecture that removes the inter-dup and inter-dup lines. As for the inter-dup detection, we reduce the extra read requests caused by the traditional read-verify hash process. Besides, we design several techniques to manage duplicate blocks. (2) We propose a cache-assisted read scheme to reduce the reads to duplicate data. When an L2 cache miss wants to read the duplicate block, if the reference block has been fetched to L2 and it is clean, we can copy it to the L2 missed block without accessing off-chip DRAM. As for the reads to intra-dup data, CMD uses the on-chip metadata cache to get the data. (3) When a cache line is evicted, the clean sectors in the line are invalidated while the dirty sectors are written back. However, most read-only victims are re-referenced from DRAM more than twice. Therefore, we add a full-associate FIFO to accommodate the read-only (it is also clean) victims to reduce the re-reference counts. Experiments show that CMD can decrease the off-chip accesses by 31.01%, reduce the energy by 32.78% and improve performance by 37.79%. Besides, CMD can improve the performance of memory-intensive workloads by 50.18%.

A Self-Healing Magnetic-Array-Type Current Sensor with Data-Driven Identification of Abnormal Magnetic Measurement Units

Magnetic-array-type current sensors have garnered increasing popularity owing to their notable advantages, including broadband functionality, a large dynamic range, cost-effectiveness, and compact dimensions. However, the susceptibility of the measurement error of one or more magnetic measurement units (MMUs) within the current sensor to drift significantly from the nominal value due to environmental factors poses a potential threat to the measurement accuracy of the current sensor. In light of the need to ensure sustained measurement accuracy over the long term, this paper proposes an innovative self-healing approach rooted in cyber-physics correlation. This approach aims to identify MMUs exhibiting abnormal measurement errors, allowing for the exclusive utilization of the remaining unaffected MMUs in the current measurement process. To achieve this, principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to discern the primary component, arising from fluctuations of the measured current, from the residual component, attributed to the drift in measurement error. This analysis is conducted by scrutinizing the measured data obtained from the MMUs. Subsequently, the squared prediction error (SPE) statistic (also called $Q$ statistic) is deployed to individually identify any MMU displaying abnormal behavior. The experimental results demonstrate the successful online identification of abnormal MMUs without the need for a standard magnetic field sensor. By eliminating the contributions from the identified abnormal MMUs, the accuracy of the current measurement is effectively preserved.
