Segmentation-Free X-ray Energy Spectrum Estimation for Computed Tomography Using Dual-Energy Material Decomposition

X-ray energy spectrum plays an essential role in computed tomography (CT) imaging and related tasks. Due to the high photon flux of clinical CT scanners, most of spectrum estimation methods are indirect and usually suffered from various limitations. In this study, we aim to provide a segmentation-free indirect transmission measurement-based energy spectrum estimation method using dual-energy material decomposition. The general principle of the method is to minimize the quadratic error between the polychromatic forward projection and the raw projection to calibrate a set of unknown weights which are used to express the unknown spectrum together with a set of model spectra. The polychromatic forward projection is performed using material-specific images which are obtained using dual-energy material decomposition. The algorithm has been evaluated using numerical simulations, experimental phantom data as well as realistic patient data. The results show the estimated spectrum matches the reference spectrum quite well and the method is robust. Extensive studies suggest the method provides accurate estimate of the CT spectrum without dedicated physical phantom and prolonged work flow. This paper may be attractive for CT dose calculations, artifacts reduction, polychromatic image reconstruction and other spectrum-involved CT applications.

Source Camera Identification Based On Content-Adaptive Fusion Network

Source camera identification is still a hard task in forensics community, especially for the case of the small query image size. In this paper, we propose a solution to identify the source camera of the small-size images: content-adaptive fusion network. In order to learn better feature representation from the input data, content-adaptive convolutional neural networks(CA-CNN) are constructed. We add a convolutional layer in preprocessing stage. Moreover, with the purpose of capturing more comprehensive information, we parallel three CA-CNNs: CA3-CNN, CA5-CNN, CA7-CNN to get the content-adaptive fusion network. The difference of three CA-CNNs lies in the convolutional kernel size of pre-processing layer. The experimental results show that the proposed method is practicable and satisfactory.

The first result on 76Ge neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment

We report the first result on Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. A mass of 994 g p-type point-contact high purity germanium detector has been installed to search the neutrinoless double beta decay events, as well as to directly detect dark matter particles. An exposure of 304 kg*day has been analyzed. The wideband spectrum from 500 keV to 3 MeV was obtained and the average event rate at the 2.039 MeV energy range is about 0.012 count per keV per kg per day. The half-life of Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay has been derived based on this result as: T 1/2 > 6.4*10^22 yr (90% C.L.). An upper limit on the effective Majorana-neutrino mass of 5.0 eV has been achieved. The possible methods to further decrease the background level have been discussed and will be pursued in the next stage of CDEX experiment.

NGC5252: a pair of radio-emitting active galactic nuclei?

The X-ray source CXO J133815.6+043255 has counterparts in the UV, optical, and radio bands. Based on the multi-band investigations, it has been recently proposed by Kim et al. (2015) as a rarely-seen off-nucleus ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source with a black hole mass of >= 10^4 solar mass in the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 5252. To explore its radio properties at very high angular resolution, we performed very long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 GHz. We find that the radio counterpart is remarkably compact among the known ULXs. It does not show a resolved structure with a resolution of a few milliarcsecond (mas), and the total recovered flux density is comparable to that measured in earlier sub-arcsecond-resolution images. The compact radio structure, the relatively flat spectrum, and the high radio luminosity are consistent with a weakly accreting supermassive black hole in a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. The nucleus of NGC 5252 itself has similar radio properties. We argue that the system represents a relatively rare pair of active galactic nuclei, where both components emit in the radio.

Megamaser Disks Reveal a Broad Distribution of Black Hole Mass in Spiral Galaxies

We use new precision measurements of black hole masses from water megamaser disks to investigate scaling relations between macroscopic galaxy properties and supermassive black hole (BH) mass. The megamaser-derived BH masses span 10^6-10^8 M_sun, while all the galaxy properties that we examine (including stellar mass, central mass density, central velocity dispersion) lie within a narrow range. Thus, no galaxy property correlates tightly with M_BH in ~L* spiral galaxies. Of them all, stellar velocity dispersion provides the tightest relation, but at fixed sigma* the mean megamaser M_BH are offset by -0.6+/-0.1 dex relative to early-type galaxies. Spiral galaxies with non-maser dynamical BH masses do not show this offset. At low mass, we do not yet know the full distribution of BH mass at fixed galaxy property; the non-maser dynamical measurements may miss the low-mass end of the BH distribution due to inability to resolve the spheres of influence and/or megamasers may preferentially occur in lower-mass BHs.

A Fast Multipole Method based on Band-limited Approximations for Radial Basis Functions

The meshless/meshfree radial basis function (RBF) method is a powerful technique for interpolating scattered data. But, solving large RBF interpolation problems without fast summation methods is computationally expensive. For RBF interpolation with $N$ points, using a direct method requires $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ operations. As a fast summation method, the fast multipole method (FMM) has been implemented in speeding up the matrix-vector multiply, which reduces the complexity from $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N^{1.5})$ and even to $\mathcal{O}(NlogN)$ for the multilevel fast multipole method (MLFMM). In this paper, we present a novel kernel-independent fast multipole method for RBF interpolation, which is used in combination with the evaluation of point-to-point interactions by RBF and the fast matrix-vector multiplication. This approach is based on band-limited approximation and quadrature rules, which extends the range of applicability of FMM.

All $α+uβ$-constacyclic codes of length $np^{s}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}+u\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}$

Let $\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}$ be a finite field with cardinality $p^{m}$ and $R=\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}+u\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}$ with $u^{2}=0$. We aim to determine all $α+uβ$-constacyclic codes of length $np^{s}$ over $R$, where $α,β\in\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}^{*}$, $n, s\in\mathbb{N}_{+}$ and $\gcd(n,p)=1$. Let $α_{0}\in\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}^{*}$ and $α_{0}^{p^{s}}=α$. The residue ring $R[x]/\langle x^{np^{s}}-α-uβ\rangle$ is a chain ring with the maximal ideal $\langle x^{n}-α_{0}\rangle$ in the case that $x^{n}-α_{0}$ is irreducible in $\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}[x]$. If $x^{n}-α_{0}$ is reducible in $\mathbb{F}_{p^{m}}[x]$, we give the explicit expressions of the ideals of $R[x]/\langle x^{np^{s}}-α-uβ\rangle$. Besides, the number of codewords and the dual code of every $α+uβ$-constacyclic code are provided.

Segmentation-free x-ray energy spectrum estimation for computed tomography

X-ray energy spectrum plays an essential role in imaging and related tasks. Due to the high photon flux of clinical CT scanners, most of the spectrum estimation methods are indirect and are usually suffered from various limitations. The recently proposed indirect transmission measurement-based method requires at least the segmentation of one material, which is insufficient for CT images of highly noisy and with artifacts. To combat for the bottleneck of spectrum estimation using segmented CT images, in this study, we develop a segmentation-free indirect transmission measurement based energy spectrum estimation method using dual-energy material decomposition. The general principle of the method is to compare polychromatic forward projection with raw projection to calibrate a set of unknown weights which are used to express the unknown spectrum together with a set of model spectra. After applying dual-energy material decomposition using high- and low-energy raw projection data, polychromatic forward projection is conducted on material-specific images. The unknown weights are then iteratively updated to minimize the difference between the raw projection and estimated projection. Both numerical simulations and experimental head phantom are used to evaluate the proposed method. The results indicate that the method provides accurate estimate of the spectrum and it may be attractive for dose calculations, artifacts correction and other clinical applications.

A Model-Based Scatter Artifacts Correction for Cone Beam CT

The purpose of this work is to provide a fast and accurate scatter artifacts correction algorithm for cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging. The method starts with an estimation of coarse scatter profiles for a set of CBCT data in either image domain or projection domain. A denoising algorithm designed specifically for Poisson signals is then applied to derive the final scatter distribution. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations using thorax and abdomen phantoms with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, experimental Catphan phantom data, and in vivo human data acquired for a clinical image guided radiation therapy were performed. Results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce scatter artifacts and recover the correct HU in either projection domain or image domain. For the MC thorax phantom study, four components segmentation yield the best results, while the results of three components segmentation are still acceptable. For the Catphan phantom data, the mean value over all pixels in the residual image is reduced from -21.8 HU to -0.2 HU and 0.7 HU for projection domain and image domain, respectively. The contrast of the in vivo human images are greatly improved after correction. The software-based technique has a number of advantages, such as high computational efficiency and accuracy, and the capability of performing scatter correction without modifying the clinical workflow or modifying the imaging hardware. When implemented practically, this should improve the accuracy of CBCT image quantitation and significantly impact CBCT-based interventional procedures and adaptive radiation therapy.

Using Edge-Preserving Algorithm with Non-local Mean for Significantly Improved Image-Domain Material Decomposition in Dual Energy CT

Increased noise is a general concern for dual-energy material decomposition. Here, we develop an image-domain material decomposition algorithm for dual-energy CT (DECT) by incorporating an edge-preserving filter into the Local HighlY constrained backPRojection Reconstruction (HYPR-LR) framework. With effective use of the non-local mean, the proposed algorithm, which is referred to as HYPR-NLM, reduces the noise in dual energy decomposition while preserving the accuracy of quantitative measurement and spatial resolution of the material-specific dual energy images. We demonstrate the noise reduction and resolution preservation of the algorithm with iodine concentrate numerical phantom by comparing the HYPR-NLM algorithm to the direct matrix inversion, HYPR-LR and iterative image-domain material decomposition (Iter-DECT). We also show the superior performance of the HYPR-NLM over the existing methods by using two sets of cardiac perfusing imaging data. The reference drawn from the comparison study includes: (1) HYPR-NLM significantly reduces the DECT material decomposition noise while preserving quantitative measurements and high-frequency edge information, and (2) HYPR-NLM is robust with respect to parameter selection.

A discussion of $Bl$ conservation on a two dimensional magnetic field plane in watt balances

The watt balance is an experiment being pursued in national metrology institutes for precision determination of the Planck constant $h$. In watt balances, the $1/r$ magnetic field, expected to generate a geometrical factor $Bl$ independent to any coil horizontal displacement, can be created by a strict two dimensional, symmetric (horizontal $r$ and vertical $z$) construction of the magnet system. In this paper, we present an analytical understanding of magnetic field distribution when the $r$ symmetry of the magnet is broken and the establishment of the $Bl$ conservation is shown. By using either Gauss's law on magnetism with monopoles or conformal transformations, we extend the $Bl$ conservation to arbitrary two dimensional magnetic planes where the vertical magnetic field component equals zero. The generalized $Bl$ conservation allows a relaxed physical alignment criteria for watt balance magnet systems.

Energy Spectrum Extraction and Optimal Imaging via Dual-Energy Material Decomposition

Inferior soft-tissue contrast resolution is a major limitation of current CT scanners. The aim of the study is to improve the contrast resolution of CT scanners using dual-energy acquisition. Based on dual-energy material decomposition, the proposed method starts with extracting the outgoing energy spectrum by polychromatic forward projecting the material-selective images. The extracted spectrum is then reweighted to boost the soft-tissue contrast. A simulated water cylinder phantom with inserts that contain a series of six solutions of varying iodine concentration (range, 0-20 mg/mL) is used to evaluate the proposed method. Results show the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean energy difference between the extracted energy spectrum and the spectrum acquired using an energy-resolved photon counting detector(PCD), are 0.044 and 0.01 keV, respectively. Compared to the method using the standard energy-integrating detectors, dose normalized contrast-to-noise ratio (CNRD) for the proposed method are improved from 1 to 2.15 and from 1 to 1.88 for the 8 mg/mL and 16 mg/mL iodine concentration inserts, respectively. The results show CT image reconstructed using the proposed method is superior to the image reconstructed using the standard method that using an energy-integrating detector.

An analytical algorithm for 3D magnetic field mapping of a watt balance magnet

A yoke-based permanent magnet, which has been employed in many watt balances at national metrology institutes, is supposed to generate strong and uniform magnetic field in an air gap in the radial direction. However, in reality the fringe effect due to the finite height of the air gap will introduce an undesired vertical magnetic component to the air gap, which should either be measured or modeled towards some optimizations of the watt balance. A recent publication, i.e., {\it Metrologia} 52(4) 445 [1], presented a full field mapping method, which in theory will supply useful information for profile characterization and misalignment analysis. This article is an additional material of [1], which develops a different analytical algorithm to represent the 3D magnetic field of a watt balance magnet based on only one measurement for the radial magnetic flux density along the vertical direction, $B_r(z)$. The new algorithm is based on the electromagnetic nature of the magnet, which has a much better accuracy.

The positive piezoconductive effect in graphene

As the thinnest conductive and elastic material, graphene is expected to play a crucial role in post-Moore era. Besides applications on electronic devices, graphene has shown great potential for nano-electromechanical systems. While interlayer interactions play a key role in modifying the electronic structures of layered materials, no attention has been given to their impact on electromechanical properties. Here we report the positive piezoconductive effect observed in suspended bi- and multi-layer graphene. The effect is highly layer number dependent and shows the most pronounced response for tri-layer graphene. The effect, and its dependence on the layer number, can be understood as resulting from the strain-induced competition between interlayer coupling and intralayer transport, as confirmed by the numerical calculations based on the non-equilibrium Green's function method. Our results enrich the understanding of graphene and point to layer number as a powerful tool for tuning the electromechanical properties of graphene for future applications.

Beacon Node Placement for Minimal Localization Error

Beacon node placement, node-to-node measurement, and target node positioning are the three key steps for a localization process. However, compared with the other two steps, beacon node placement still lacks a comprehensive, systematic study in research literatures. To fill this gap, we address the Beacon Node Placment (BNP) problem that deploys beacon nodes for minimal localization error in this paper. BNP is difficult in that the localization error is determined by a complicated combination of factors, i.e., the localization error differing greatly under a different environment, with a different algorithm applied, or with a different type of beacon node used. In view of the hardness of BNP, we propose an approximate function to reduce time cost in localization error calculation, and also prove its time complexity and error bound. By approximation, a sub-optimal distribution of beacon nodes could be found within acceptable time cost for placement. In the experiment, we test our method and compare it with other node placement methods under various settings and environments. The experimental results show feasibility and effectiveness of our method in practice.

Exothermic isospin-violating dark matter after SuperCDMS and CDEX

We show that exothermic isospin-violating dark matter (IVDM) can make the results of the latest CDMS-Si experiment consistent with recent null experiments, such as XENON10, XENON100, LUX, CDEX, and SuperCDMS, whereas for the CoGeNT experiment, a strong tension still persists. For CDMS-Si, separate exothermic dark matter or isospin-violating dark matter cannot fully ameliorate the tensions among these experiments; the tension disappears only if exothermic scattering is combined with an isospin-violating effect of f_n/f_p=-0.7. For such exothermic IVDM to exist, at least a new vector gauge boson (dark photon or dark Z') that connects SM quarks to Majorana-type DM particles is required.

An indirect transmission measurement-based spectrum estimation method for computed tomography

The characteristics of an x-ray spectrum can greatly influence imaging and related tasks. In practice, due to the pile-up effect of the detector, it's difficult to directly measure the spectrum of a CT scanner using an energy resolved detector. An alternative solution is to estimate the spectrum using transmission measurements with a step phantom or other CT phantom. In this work, we present a new spectrum estimation method based on indirect transmission measurement and model spectra mixture approach. The estimated x-ray spectrum was expressed as weighted summation of a set of model spectra, which can significantly reduce the degrees of freedom (DOF) of the spectrum estimation problem. Next, an estimated projection can be calculated with the assumed spectrum. By iteratively updating the unknown weights, we minimized the difference between the estimated projection data and the raw projection data. The final spectrum was calculated with these calibrated weights and the model spectra. Both simulation and experimental data were used to evaluate the proposed method. In the simulation study, the estimated spectra were compared to the raw spectra which were used to generate the raw projection data. For the experimental study, the ground truth measurement of the raw x-ray spectrum was not available. Therefore, the estimated spectrum was compared against spectra generated using the SpekCalc software with tube configurations provided by the scanner manufacturer. The results show the proposed method has potential to accurately estimate x-ray spectra using the raw projection data. The difference between the mean energy of the raw spectra and the mean energy of the estimated spectra were smaller than 0.5 keV for both simulation and experimental data. Further tests show the method was robust with respect to the model spectra generator.
