Topological Higgs Amplitude Modes in Strongly Interacting Superfluids

By studying the 2-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Bose-Hubbard model, we show the existence of topological Higgs amplitude modes in the strongly interacting superfluid phase. Using the slave boson approach, we find that, in the large filling limit, the Higgs excitations and the Goldstone excitations above the ground state are well decoupled, and both of them exhibit nontrivial topology inherited from the underlying noninteracting bands. At finite fillings, they become coupled at high energies; nevertheless, the topology of these modes are unchanged. Moreover, based on an effective action analysis, we further provide a universal physical picture for the topological character of Higgs and Goldstone modes. Our discovery of the first realization of the topological Higgs mode opens the path to novel investigations in various systems such as superconductors and quantum magnetism.

Controlling higher-orbital quantum phases of ultracold atoms via coupling to optical cavities

Orbital degree of freedom plays an important role in understanding exotic phenomena of strongly correlated materials. We study strongly correlated ultracold bosonic gases coupled to a high-finesse cavity, pumped by a blue-detuned laser in the transverse direction. Based on an extended Bose-Hubbard model with parameters adapted to recent experiments, we find that by tuning the reflection of pump laser, atoms can be selectively transferred to the odd-parity $p$-orbital, or to even-parity $d$-orbital band of a two-dimensional square lattice, accompanied with cavity-photon excitations. By interacting with cavity field, atoms self-organize to form stable higher-orbital superfluid and Mott-insulating phases with orbital-density waves, as a result of cavity induced orbital-flip processes. Our study opens the route to manipulate orbital degrees of freedom in strongly correlated quantum gases via coupling to optical cavities.

Self-Assembly of Isostatic Self-Dual Colloidal Crystals

Self-dual structures whose dual counterparts are themselves possess unique hidden symmetry, beyond the description of classical spatial symmetry groups. Here we propose a strategy based on { a nematic monolayer of} attractive half-cylindrical colloids to self-assemble these exotic structures. { This system can be seen as a 2D system of semi-disks.} By using Monte Carlo simulations, we discover two isostatic self-dual crystals, i.e., an unreported crystal with pmg {space-group} symmetry and the twisted Kagome crystal. For the pmg crystal approaching the critical point, we find the double degeneracy of the {full} phononic spectrum at the self-dual point, and the merging of two tilted Weyl nodes into one \emph{critically-tilted} Dirac node. The latter is `accidentally' located on the high-symmetry line. The formation of this unconventional Dirac node is due to the emergence of the critical flat bands at the self-dual point, which are linear combinations of \emph{finite-frequency} floppy modes. These modes can be understood as mechanically-coupled self-dual rhomb chains vibrating in some unique uncoupled ways. Our work paves the way for designing and fabricating self-dual materials with exotic mechanical or phononic properties.

Far-UV Fe Emission as Proxy of Eddington Ratios

The Eddington ratio is a key parameter that governs the diversity of quasar properties. It can be scaled with a strong anti-correlation between optical Fe II and [O III] emission. In search of such indicators in the far-UV band, the HST far-UV spectra of 150 low-redshift quasars are analyzed in combination with their optical SDSS counterparts. The strength of Fe II+Fe III 1123 emission is significantly correlated with that of optical Fe II. A moderate correlation may also exist between Fe II 1071 and optical Fe II. The finding opens the possibility that far-UV Fe II emission may serve as a new gauge of the Eddington ratios. The high- and low-ionization lines in the far-UV band display different patterns: for the quasars with higher Eddington ratios, the low-ionization UV lines are stronger, and the high-ionization lines are broader and weaker.

Floquet Engineering of a Dynamical $Z_{2}$ Lattice Gauge Field with Ultracold Atoms

In this paper, we propose that a simple model, in which fermions coupled to a dynamical lattice gauge field, can be engineered via the Floquet approach. The model possess both a independent Maxwell term and the local $Z_{2}$ gauge symmetry. Our proposal relies on a species dependent optical lattice, and can be achieved in one, two or three dimension. By an unitary transformation, this model can be mapped into a non-interacting composite Fermion system with fluctuating back ground charge. With the help of this composite Fermion picture, two characteristic observations are predicted. One is the radio-frequency spectroscopy, which exhibits no dispersion in all parameter regimes. Second is the the dynamical localization, which depends on the structure of the initial states.

Graph Neural Network Encoding for Community Detection in Attribute Networks

In this paper, we first propose a graph neural network encoding method for multiobjective evolutionary algorithm to handle the community detection problem in complex attribute networks. In the graph neural network encoding method, each edge in an attribute network is associated with a continuous variable. Through non-linear transformation, a continuous valued vector (i.e. a concatenation of the continuous variables associated with the edges) is transferred to a discrete valued community grouping solution. Further, two objective functions for single- and multi-attribute network are proposed to evaluate the attribute homogeneity of the nodes in communities, respectively. Based on the new encoding method and the two objectives, a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) based upon NSGA-II, termed as continuous encoding MOEA, is developed for the transformed community detection problem with continuous decision variables. Experimental results on single- and multi-attribute networks with different types show that the developed algorithm performs significantly better than some well-known evolutionary and non-evolutionary based algorithms. The fitness landscape analysis verifies that the transformed community detection problems have smoother landscapes than those of the original problems, which justifies the effectiveness of the proposed graph neural network encoding method.

Subject-independent Human Pose Image Construction with Commodity Wi-Fi

Recently, commodity Wi-Fi devices have been shown to be able to construct human pose images, i.e., human skeletons, as fine-grained as cameras. Existing papers achieve good results when constructing the images of subjects who are in the prior training samples. However, the performance drops when it comes to new subjects, i.e., the subjects who are not in the training samples. This paper focuses on solving the subject-generalization problem in human pose image construction. To this end, we define the subject as the domain. Then we design a Domain-Independent Neural Network (DINN) to extract subject-independent features and convert them into fine-grained human pose images. We also propose a novel training method to train the DINN and it has no re-training overhead comparing with the domain-adversarial approach. We build a prototype system and experimental results demonstrate that our system can construct fine-grained human pose images of new subjects with commodity Wi-Fi in both the visible and through-wall scenarios, which shows the effectiveness and the subject-generalization ability of our model.

A Multi-View Dynamic Fusion Framework: How to Improve the Multimodal Brain Tumor Segmentation from Multi-Views?

When diagnosing the brain tumor, doctors usually make a diagnosis by observing multimodal brain images from the axial view, the coronal view and the sagittal view, respectively. And then they make a comprehensive decision to confirm the brain tumor based on the information obtained from multi-views. Inspired by this diagnosing process and in order to further utilize the 3D information hidden in the dataset, this paper proposes a multi-view dynamic fusion framework to improve the performance of brain tumor segmentation. The proposed framework consists of 1) a multi-view deep neural network architecture, which represents multi learning networks for segmenting the brain tumor from different views and each deep neural network corresponds to multi-modal brain images from one single view and 2) the dynamic decision fusion method, which is mainly used to fuse segmentation results from multi-views as an integrate one and two different fusion methods, the voting method and the weighted averaging method, have been adopted to evaluate the fusing process. Moreover, the multi-view fusion loss, which consists of the segmentation loss, the transition loss and the decision loss, is proposed to facilitate the training process of multi-view learning networks so as to keep the consistency of appearance and space, not only in the process of fusing segmentation results, but also in the process of training the learning network. \par By evaluating the proposed framework on BRATS 2015 and BRATS 2018, it can be found that the fusion results from multi-views achieve a better performance than the segmentation result from the single view and the effectiveness of proposed multi-view fusion loss has also been proved. Moreover, the proposed framework achieves a better segmentation performance and a higher efficiency compared to other counterpart methods.

CentiTrack: Towards Centimeter-Level Passive Gesture Tracking with Commodity WiFi

Gesture awareness plays a crucial role in promoting human-computer interface. Previous works either depend on customized hardware or need a priori learning of wireless signal patterns, facing downsides in terms of the privacy concern, availability and reliability. In this paper, we propose CentiTrack, the first centimeter-level passive gesture tracking system that works with only three commodityWiFi devices, without any extra hardware modifications or wearable sensors. To this end, we first identify the Channel State Information (CSI) measurement error sources in the physical layer process, and then denoise CSI by the complex ratio between adjacent antennas. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is further adopted to separate the reflected signals from noises. Benchmark experiments are conducted to verify that the phase changes of denoised CSI are proportional to the length changes of dynamic path reflected off the hand. In addition, we adopt the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm to estimate the Angle-of-Arrivals (AoAs) of dynamic paths, and then locate the initial position of hands with triangulation. We also propose a novel static componnets elimination algorithm for tracking correction by eliminating the components unrelated to motion. A prototype of CentiTrack is fully realized and evaluated in various real scenarios. Extensive experiments show that CentiTrack is superior in terms of tracking accuracy, sensing range and device cost, compared with the state-of-the-arts.

Pseudo-time-reversal-symmetry-protected topological Bogoliubov excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Bogoliubov excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices may possess band topology in analogous to topological insulators in class AII of fermions. Using the language of the Krein-space theory, this topological property is shown to be protected by a pseudo-time-reversal symmetry that is pseudo-antiunitary and squares to $-1$, with the associated bulk topological invariant also being a $\mathbb Z_2$ index. We construct three equivalent expressions for it, relating to the Pfaffian, the pseudo-time-reversal polarization, and most practically, the Wannier center flow, all adopted from the fermionic case, defined here with respect to the pseudo inner product. In the presence of an additional pseudo-unitary and pseudo-Hermitian inversion symmetry, a simpler expression is derived. We then study two toy models feasible on cold atom platforms to numerically confirm the bulk-boundary correspondence. The Krein-space approach developed in this work is a universal formalism to study all kinds of symmetry-protected topological bosonic Bogoliubov bands.

Design based incomplete U-statistics

U-statistics are widely used in fields such as economics, machine learning, and statistics. However, while they enjoy desirable statistical properties, they have an obvious drawback in that the computation becomes impractical as the data size $n$ increases. Specifically, the number of combinations, say $m$, that a U-statistic of order $d$ has to evaluate is $O(n^d)$. Many efforts have been made to approximate the original U-statistic using a small subset of combinations since Blom (1976), who referred to such an approximation as an incomplete U-statistic. To the best of our knowledge, all existing methods require $m$ to grow at least faster than $n$, albeit more slowly than $n^d$, in order for the corresponding incomplete U-statistic to be asymptotically efficient in terms of the mean squared error. In this paper, we introduce a new type of incomplete U-statistic that can be asymptotically efficient, even when $m$ grows more slowly than $n$. In some cases, $m$ is only required to grow faster than $\sqrt{n}$. Our theoretical and empirical results both show significant improvements in the statistical efficiency of the new incomplete U-statistic.

Density Dependent Spin-Orbit Coupling in Degenerate Quantum Gases

In this letter we propose a method to realize a kind of spin-orbit coupling in ultracold Bose and Fermi gases whose format and strength depend on density of atoms. Our method combines two-photon Raman transition and periodical modulation of spin-dependent interaction, which gives rise to the direct Raman process and the interaction assisted Raman process, and the latter depends on density of atoms. These two processes have opposite effects in term of spin-momentum locking and compete with each other. As the interaction modulation increases, the system undergoes a crossover from the direct Raman process dominated regime to the interaction assisted Raman process dominated regime. For this crossover, we show that for bosons, both the condensate momentum and the chirality of condensate wave function change sign, and for fermions, the Fermi surface distortion is inverted. We highlight that there exists an emergent spatial reflection symmetry in the crossover regime, which can manifest itself universally in both Bose and Fermi gases. Our method paves a way to novel phenomena in a non-abelian gauge field with intrinsic dynamics.

Mining of high throughput screening database reveals AP-1 and autophagy pathways as potential targets for COVID-19 therapeutics

The recent global pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 presents an urgent need for new therapeutic candidates. Many efforts have been devoted to screening existing drug libraries with the hope to repurpose approved drugs as potential treatments for COVID-19. However, the antiviral mechanisms of action for the drugs found active in these phenotypic screens are largely unknown. To deconvolute the viral targets for more effective anti-COVID-19 drug development, we mined our in-house database of approved drug screens against 994 assays and compared their activity profiles with the drug activity profile in a cytopathic effect (CPE) assay of SARS-CoV-2. We found that the autophagy and AP-1 signaling pathway activity profiles are significantly correlated with the anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity profile. In addition, a class of neurology/psychiatry drugs was found significantly enriched with anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity. Taken together, these results have provided new insights into SARS-CoV-2 infection and potential targets for COVID-19 therapeutics.

VerifyTL: Secure and Verifiable Collaborative Transfer Learning

Getting access to labelled datasets in certain sensitive application domains can be challenging. Hence, one often resorts to transfer learning to transfer knowledge learned from a source domain with sufficient labelled data to a target domain with limited labelled data. However, most existing transfer learning techniques only focus on one-way transfer which brings no benefit to the source domain. In addition, there is the risk of a covert adversary corrupting a number of domains, which can consequently result in inaccurate prediction or privacy leakage. In this paper we construct a secure and Verifiable collaborative Transfer Learning scheme, VerifyTL, to support two-way transfer learning over potentially untrusted datasets by improving knowledge transfer from a target domain to a source domain. Further, we equip VerifyTL with a cross transfer unit and a weave transfer unit employing SPDZ computation to provide privacy guarantee and verification in the two-domain setting and the multi-domain setting, respectively. Thus, VerifyTL is secure against covert adversary that can compromise up to n-1 out of n data domains. We analyze the security of VerifyTL and evaluate its performance over two real-world datasets. Experimental results show that VerifyTL achieves significant performance gains over existing secure learning schemes.

Many-body Decay of the Gapped Lowest Excitation of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study the decay mechanism of the gapped lowest-lying excitation of a quasi-pure box-trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Owing to the absence of lower-energy modes, or direct coupling to an external bath, this excitation is protected against one-body (linear) decay and the damping mechanism is exclusively nonlinear. We develop a universal theoretical model that explains this fundamental nonlinear damping as a process whereby two quanta of the gapped lowest excitation mode couple to a higher-energy mode, which subsequently decays into a continuum. We find quantitative agreement between our experiments and the predictions of this model. Finally, by strongly driving the system below its (lowest) resonant frequency we observe third-harmonic generation, a hallmark of nonlinear behavior.

Measuring the dynamics of a first order structural phase transition between two configurations of a superradiant crystal

We observe a structural phase transition between two configurations of a superradiant crystal by coupling a Bose-Einstein condensate to an optical cavity and applying imbalanced transverse pump fields. We find that this first order phase transition is accompanied by transient dynamics of the order parameter which we measure in real-time. The phase transition and the excitation spectrum can be derived from a microscopic Hamiltonian in quantitative agreement with our experimental data.

Enhanced Kinetic Impactor for Deflecting Large Potentially Hazardous Asteroids via Maneuvering Space Rocks

Asteroid impacts pose a major threat to all life on Earth. The age of the dinosaurs was abruptly ended by a 10-km-diameter asteroid. Currently, a nuclear device is the only means of deflecting large Potentially Hazardous Asteroids (PHAs) away from an Earth-impacting trajectory. The Enhanced Kinetic Impactor (EKI) concept is proposed to deflect large PHAs via maneuvering space rocks. First, an unmanned spacecraft is launched to rendezvous with an intermediate Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA). Then, more than one hundred tons of rocks are collected from the NEA as the EKI. The NEA can also be captured as the EKI if the NEA is very small. Finally, the EKI is maneuvered to impact the PHA at a high speed, resulting in a significant deflection of the PHA. For example, to deflect Apophis, as much as 200 t of rocks could be collected from a NEA as the EKI based on existing engineering capabilities. The EKI can produce a velocity increment (delta-v) of 39.81 mm/s in Apophis, thereby increasing the minimum geocentric distance during the close encounter in 2029 by 1,866.93 km. This mission can be completed in 3.96 years with a propellant cost of 2.98 t. Compared with a classic kinetic impactor, the deflection distance can be increased one order of magnitude. The EKI concept breaks through the limitation of the ground-based launch capability, which can significantly increase the mass of the impactor. We anticipate that our research will be a starting point for efficient planetary defense against large PHAs.

Spectral Signatures of Quasar Ages at z~3

Insight into quasar ages may be obtained from the proximity effect, but so far only in a limited number of bright quasars. Based on ~2600 SDSS quasar spectra at 2.5 <= z <= 3.5, a search for spectral voids between Ly-alpha forest lines finds proximity zones over a wide range of radial distances. The majority of zone sizes are less than 5 Mpc, with their numbers decreasing exponentialy towards larger distances. After normalization by luminosities, the zone sizes are distributed an e-folding scale of 0.64 as compared with the anticipated values. A group of quasars are selected for their large proximity zones of >~ 10 Mpc. Their composite spectrum displays strong narrow cores and large equivalent widths in Ly-alpha and other major UV emission lines. If the proximity zones along lines of sight are indicative of quasar ages, these features may be the signatures of old quasars. Another group of quasars are selected as they show no proximity zone and exhibit intrinsic absorption lines at z_{ab} > z_{em}. They are likely young quasars and exhibit weaker narrow emission-line components. The significant difference of spectral features between the two groups may reflect an evolution pattern over quasars' lifetimes.
