Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning for Multi-agent MOBA Game

Real Time Strategy (RTS) games require macro strategies as well as micro strategies to obtain satisfactory performance since it has large state space, action space, and hidden information. This paper presents a novel hierarchical reinforcement learning model for mastering Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games, a sub-genre of RTS games. The novelty of this work are: (1) proposing a hierarchical framework, where agents execute macro strategies by imitation learning and carry out micromanipulations through reinforcement learning, (2) developing a simple self-learning method to get better sample efficiency for training, and (3) designing a dense reward function for multi-agent cooperation in the absence of game engine or Application Programming Interface (API). Finally, various experiments have been performed to validate the superior performance of the proposed method over other state-of-the-art reinforcement learning algorithms. Agent successfully learns to combat and defeat bronze-level built-in AI with 100% win rate, and experiments show that our method can create a competitive multi-agent for a kind of mobile MOBA game {\it King of Glory} in 5v5 mode.

Stereoscopic Omnidirectional Image Quality Assessment Based on Predictive Coding Theory

Objective quality assessment of stereoscopic omnidirectional images is a challenging problem since it is influenced by multiple aspects such as projection deformation, field of view (FoV) range, binocular vision, visual comfort, etc. Existing studies show that classic 2D or 3D image quality assessment (IQA) metrics are not able to perform well for stereoscopic omnidirectional images. However, very few research works have focused on evaluating the perceptual visual quality of omnidirectional images, especially for stereoscopic omnidirectional images. In this paper, based on the predictive coding theory of the human vision system (HVS), we propose a stereoscopic omnidirectional image quality evaluator (SOIQE) to cope with the characteristics of 3D 360-degree images. Two modules are involved in SOIQE: predictive coding theory based binocular rivalry module and multi-view fusion module. In the binocular rivalry module, we introduce predictive coding theory to simulate the competition between high-level patterns and calculate the similarity and rivalry dominance to obtain the quality scores of viewport images. Moreover, we develop the multi-view fusion module to aggregate the quality scores of viewport images with the help of both content weight and location weight. The proposed SOIQE is a parametric model without necessary of regression learning, which ensures its interpretability and generalization performance. Experimental results on our published stereoscopic omnidirectional image quality assessment database (SOLID) demonstrate that our proposed SOIQE method outperforms state-of-the-art metrics. Furthermore, we also verify the effectiveness of each proposed module on both public stereoscopic image datasets and panoramic image datasets.

Feature-Critic Networks for Heterogeneous Domain Generalization

The well known domain shift issue causes model performance to degrade when deployed to a new target domain with different statistics to training. Domain adaptation techniques alleviate this, but need some instances from the target domain to drive adaptation. Domain generalisation is the recently topical problem of learning a model that generalises to unseen domains out of the box, and various approaches aim to train a domain-invariant feature extractor, typically by adding some manually designed losses. In this work, we propose a learning to learn approach, where the auxiliary loss that helps generalisation is itself learned. Beyond conventional domain generalisation, we consider a more challenging setting of heterogeneous domain generalisation, where the unseen domains do not share label space with the seen ones, and the goal is to train a feature representation that is useful off-the-shelf for novel data and novel categories. Experimental evaluation demonstrates that our method outperforms state-of-the-art solutions in both settings.

Spectral Perturbation Meets Incomplete Multi-view Data

Beyond existing multi-view clustering, this paper studies a more realistic clustering scenario, referred to as incomplete multi-view clustering, where a number of data instances are missing in certain views. To tackle this problem, we explore spectral perturbation theory. In this work, we show a strong link between perturbation risk bounds and incomplete multi-view clustering. That is, as the similarity matrix fed into spectral clustering is a quantity bounded in magnitude O(1), we transfer the missing problem from data to similarity and tailor a matrix completion method for incomplete similarity matrix. Moreover, we show that the minimization of perturbation risk bounds among different views maximizes the final fusion result across all views. This provides a solid fusion criteria for multi-view data. We motivate and propose a Perturbation-oriented Incomplete multi-view Clustering (PIC) method. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Review-Driven Answer Generation for Product-Related Questions in E-Commerce

The users often have many product-related questions before they make a purchase decision in E-commerce. However, it is often time-consuming to examine each user review to identify the desired information. In this paper, we propose a novel review-driven framework for answer generation for product-related questions in E-commerce, named RAGE. We develope RAGE on the basis of the multi-layer convolutional architecture to facilitate speed-up of answer generation with the parallel computation. For each question, RAGE first extracts the relevant review snippets from the reviews of the corresponding product. Then, we devise a mechanism to identify the relevant information from the noise-prone review snippets and incorporate this information to guide the answer generation. The experiments on two real-world E-Commerce datasets show that the proposed RAGE significantly outperforms the existing alternatives in producing more accurate and informative answers in natural language. Moreover, RAGE takes much less time for both model training and answer generation than the existing RNN based generation models.

Unsupervised Single Image Deraining with Self-supervised Constraints

Most existing single image deraining methods require learning supervised models from a large set of paired synthetic training data, which limits their generality, scalability and practicality in real-world multimedia applications. Besides, due to lack of labeled-supervised constraints, directly applying existing unsupervised frameworks to the image deraining task will suffer from low-quality recovery. Therefore, we propose an Unsupervised Deraining Generative Adversarial Network (UD-GAN) to tackle above problems by introducing self-supervised constraints from the intrinsic statistics of unpaired rainy and clean images. Specifically, we firstly design two collaboratively optimized modules, namely Rain Guidance Module (RGM) and Background Guidance Module (BGM), to take full advantage of rainy image characteristics: The RGM is designed to discriminate real rainy images from fake rainy images which are created based on outputs of the generator with BGM. Simultaneously, the BGM exploits a hierarchical Gaussian-Blur gradient error to ensure background consistency between rainy input and de-rained output. Secondly, a novel luminance-adjusting adversarial loss is integrated into the clean image discriminator considering the built-in luminance difference between real clean images and derained images. Comprehensive experiment results on various benchmarking datasets and different training settings show that UD-GAN outperforms existing image deraining methods in both quantitative and qualitative comparisons.

Automated Evaluation of Semantic Segmentation Robustness for Autonomous Driving

One of the fundamental challenges in the design of perception systems for autonomous vehicles is validating the performance of each algorithm under a comprehensive variety of operating conditions. In the case of vision-based semantic segmentation, there are known issues when encountering new scenarios that are sufficiently different to the training data. In addition, even small variations in environmental conditions such as illumination and precipitation can affect the classification performance of the segmentation model. Given the reliance on visual information, these effects often translate into poor semantic pixel classification which can potentially lead to catastrophic consequences when driving autonomously. This paper presents a novel method for analysing the robustness of semantic segmentation models and provides a number of metrics to evaluate the classification performance over a variety of environmental conditions. The process incorporates an additional sensor (lidar) to automate the process, eliminating the need for labour-intensive hand labelling of validation data. The system integrity can be monitored as the performance of the vision sensors are validated against a different sensor modality. This is necessary for detecting failures that are inherent to vision technology. Experimental results are presented based on multiple datasets collected at different times of the year with different environmental conditions. These results show that the semantic segmentation performance varies depending on the weather, camera parameters, existence of shadows, etc.. The results also demonstrate how the metrics can be used to compare and validate the performance after making improvements to a model, and compare the performance of different networks.

Data-driven Discovery of Cyber-Physical Systems

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) embed software into the physical world. They appear in a wide range of applications such as smart grids, robotics, intelligent manufacture and medical monitoring. CPSs have proved resistant to modeling due to their intrinsic complexity arising from the combination of physical components and cyber components and the interaction between them. This study proposes a general framework for reverse engineering CPSs directly from data. The method involves the identification of physical systems as well as the inference of transition logic. It has been applied successfully to a number of real-world examples ranging from mechanical and electrical systems to medical applications. The novel framework seeks to enable researchers to make predictions concerning the trajectory of CPSs based on the discovered model. Such information has been proven essential for the assessment of the performance of CPS, the design of failure-proof CPS and the creation of design guidelines for new CPSs.

Adapting Semantic Segmentation Models for Changes in Illumination and Camera Perspective

Semantic segmentation using deep neural networks has been widely explored to generate high-level contextual information for autonomous vehicles. To acquire a complete $180^\circ$ semantic understanding of the forward surroundings, we propose to stitch semantic images from multiple cameras with varying orientations. However, previously trained semantic segmentation models showed unacceptable performance after significant changes to the camera orientations and the lighting conditions. To avoid time-consuming hand labeling, we explore and evaluate the use of data augmentation techniques, specifically skew and gamma correction, from a practical real-world standpoint to extend the existing model and provide more robust performance. The presented experimental results have shown significant improvements with varying illumination and camera perspective changes.

First Investigation on the Radiation Field of the Gas-Filled Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum

A novel ignition hohlraum named three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) is designed for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion. TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is orthogonally jointed of three cylindrical hohlraums. The first experiment on the radiation field of TACH was performed on Shenguang III laser facility. 24 laser beams were elected and injected into 6 LEHs quasi-symmetrically. Total laser energy was about 59 kJ, and the peak radiation temperature reached about 192 eV. Radiation temperature and pinhole images in gas-filled hohlraum are largely identical but with minor differences with those in vacuum hohlraum. All laser energy can be totally delivered into hohlraum in 3 ns duration even without filled gas in the hohlraum of 1.4 mm diameter. Plasma filling cannot be obviously suppressed even with 0.5 atm pressure gas in the small hohlraum. Backscattering fractions of vacuum hohlraum and gas-filled hohlraum are both lower than 2%. Experimental study of this new kind of hohlraum can provide guidance for future target design and implosion experiment.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Topological Type-II Dirac Fermions Approaching the Fermi Level in a Transition Metal Dichalcogenide NiTe2

Type-II Dirac/Weyl semimetals are characterized by strongly tilted Dirac cones such that the Dirac/Weyl node emerges at the boundary of electron and hole pockets as a new state of quantum matter, distinct from the standard Dirac/Weyl points with a point-like Fermi surface which are referred to as type-I nodes. The type-II Dirac fermions were recently predicted by theory and have since been confirmed in experiments in the PtSe2-class of transition metal dichal-cogenides. However, the Dirac nodes observed in PtSe2, PdTe2 and PtTe2 candidates are quite far away from the Fermi level, making the signature of topological fermions obscure as the physical properties are still dominated by the non-Dirac quasiparticles. Here we report the synthesis of a new type-II Dirac semimetal NiTe2 in which a pair of type-II Dirac nodes are located very close to the Fermi level. The quantum oscillations in this material reveal a nontrivial Berry's phase associated with these Dirac fermions. Our first principles calculations further unveil a topological Dirac cone in its surface states. Therefore, NiTe2 may not only represent an improved system to formulate the theoretical understanding of the exotic consequences of type-II Dirac fermions, it also facilitates possible applications based on these topological carriers.

A Comparative Study of Containers and Virtual Machines in Big Data Environment

Container technique is gaining increasing attention in recent years and has become an alternative to traditional virtual machines. Some of the primary motivations for the enterprise to adopt the container technology include its convenience to encapsulate and deploy applications, lightweight operations, as well as efficiency and flexibility in resources sharing. However, there still lacks an in-depth and systematic comparison study on how big data applications, such as Spark jobs, perform between a container environment and a virtual machine environment. In this paper, by running various Spark applications with different configurations, we evaluate the two environments from many interesting aspects, such as how convenient the execution environment can be set up, what are makespans of different workloads running in each setup, how efficient the hardware resources, such as CPU and memory, are utilized, and how well each environment can scale. The results show that compared with virtual machines, containers provide a more easy-to-deploy and scalable environment for big data workloads. The research work in this paper can help practitioners and researchers to make more informed decisions on tuning their cloud environment and configuring the big data applications, so as to achieve better performance and higher resources utilization.

LOCld65, A Dual-Channel VCSEL Driver ASIC For Detector Front-End Readout

We present the design and the test results of a dual-channel Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) driver ASIC LOCld65 for detector front-end readout. LOCld65 is designed in a commercial 65-nm CMOS technology with a power supply of 1.2 V. LOCld65 contains two separate channels with the same structure and the two channels share an I2C slave. Each channel consists of an input amplifier, four stages of limiting amplifiers (LAs), a high-current output driver, and a bias-current generator. In order to extend the bandwidth, the input amplifier uses an inductive peaking technique and the LAs use a shared inductive peaking technique. The input amplifier and the output driver each utilize a Continuous-Time Linear Equalizer (CTLE). The LAs employ active feedback. The modulation current, the bias current, the peaking strength of the CTLEs, and the feedback strength of LAs are programmable through an I2C interface. In order to protect from the radiation damage, the I2C slave is implemented with triple modular redundancy. Each channel of LOCld65 is tested to operate up to 14 Gbps with typical power dissipations (the VCSEL included) of 68.3 mW/channel and 62.1 mW/channel at the VCSEL voltages of 3.3 V and 2.5 V, respectively. LOCld65 survives 4.9 kGy(SiO2). LOCld65 is an excellent match for the serializer-deserializer ASIC lpGBT in single- or dual-channel optical transmitters in HL-LHC upgrade applications.

Transfer Learning for Context-Aware Question Matching in Information-seeking Conversations in E-commerce

Building multi-turn information-seeking conversation systems is an important and challenging research topic. Although several advanced neural text matching models have been proposed for this task, they are generally not efficient for industrial applications. Furthermore, they rely on a large amount of labeled data, which may not be available in real-world applications. To alleviate these problems, we study transfer learning for multi-turn information seeking conversations in this paper. We first propose an efficient and effective multi-turn conversation model based on convolutional neural networks. After that, we extend our model to adapt the knowledge learned from a resource-rich domain to enhance the performance. Finally, we deployed our model in an industrial chatbot called AliMe Assist (https://consumerservice.taobao.com/online-help) and observed a significant improvement over the existing online model.

Visual Comfort Assessment for Stereoscopic Image Retargeting

In recent years, visual comfort assessment (VCA) for 3D/stereoscopic content has aroused extensive attention. However, much less work has been done on the perceptual evaluation of stereoscopic image retargeting. In this paper, we first build a Stereoscopic Image Retargeting Database (SIRD), which contains source images and retargeted images produced by four typical stereoscopic retargeting methods. Then, the subjective experiment is conducted to assess four aspects of visual distortion, i.e. visual comfort, image quality, depth quality and the overall quality. Furthermore, we propose a Visual Comfort Assessment metric for Stereoscopic Image Retargeting (VCA-SIR). Based on the characteristics of stereoscopic retargeted images, the proposed model introduces novel features like disparity range, boundary disparity as well as disparity intensity distribution into the assessment model. Experimental results demonstrate that VCA-SIR can achieve high consistency with subjective perception.
